Charity Begins With Me’s children’s Christmas book drive is off to the most cheerful start, thanks to a kind author!

Johannesburg, South Africa (22 October 2024) — Just last week, we told our readers that Charity Begins With Me was on the hunt for 1,500 books as part of its children’s Christmas Book Drive. Today, we’re happy to report that support has already come their way jingling, largely thanks to the kindness of an author!

Stephan Ferreira shared the good news that shortly after posting about the book collection, he received a message from Reinette Lombard; an author of the Tippie Books!

Tippie is a character, elephant, and educator who helps children learn to read, supported by visual aids (cute illustrations) loved by teachers and students alike. For Charity Begins With Me, receiving boxes of Tippie books was not only perfect for one mission (making sure children in underprivileged communities have gifts to open) but also for helping their literacy journeys.

Considerately, the donated books are in the children’s home language.

The gesture facilitated by Reinette has certainly made this Christmas one for Charity Begins With Me to look forward to. But the call for more book donations is still loud!

Books will be collected until 30 November. Drop-offs can be made at Fairlands in Johannesburg, or books can be couriered via PostNet.

Everyone looking to gift a book for Christmas can contact Stephan here!

Gogo Elizabeth Banda’s life took an unexpected turn when she lost her job. Instead of dwelling on her misfortune, she was moved to make a difference in the lives of the children in her community who were left to fend for themselves on most days.

Randburg, South Africa (18 October 2024) – After losing her job, gogo Elizabeth Banda was moved to make a difference in the lives of the children in her community, many of whom lacked caregivers or relatives to look after them during the day while their parents were at work.

Refusing to let the plight of these children continue, Elizabeth established the Ebenezer Preschool which currently cares for 25 children in Thabo Mbeki Village.

The village is an informal settlement in Randburg predominantly composed of shacks, with high levels of unemployment, poverty and food insecurity.

As a heartbreaking result, many of the children who attend her school often arrive on an empty stomach.

Through Unity Meals, Hope Worldwide South Africa and its partners, they are assisting Elizabeth in providing the children with a nourishing breakfast each day.

Their collaboration has significantly impacted Elizabeth, the children in her care, and many other communities across the country.

“The children often arrive here without a proper breakfast. The fortified Unity Meal breakfasts have been invaluable because children start the day with nutritious food.

“We were informed that this porridge is rich in protein and other essential nutrients, and you can see the difference in the children—they become more energetic and vibrant – they become children again,” shared a grateful Elizabeth.

The Langkloof Orphanage has undergone a remarkable transformation, breathing new life into the sanctuary for AIDS orphans and vulnerable children.

Drakensberg, South Africa (18 October 2024) – Situated amidst the breathtaking scenery of the Northern Drakensberg, the Langkloof Orphanage, a sanctuary for AIDS orphans and vulnerable children, recently underwent a remarkable transformation.

Established in 2001 as a refuge for 50 AIDS orphans, the orphanage has evolved into a thriving space, complete with a fully-equipped kitchen, electricity, running water, flushing toilets, a creche, and a primary school.

The recent refurbishment has breathed new life into the orphanage’s facilities. Once characterised by worn-out walls and peeling paint, the space now exudes a vibrant and inviting atmosphere.

During the highly anticipated unveiling in the first week of October 2024, joy and excitement filled the air as the children and caregivers of the home explored their newly renovated surroundings.

Other sustainable initiatives were introduced to the new and improved orphanage. These include the establishment of a hydroponic system to grow fresh herbs and vegetables, the provision of two daily meals for 55 children, supporting staff and encouraging community action by appealing for donations towards the orphanage’s operations.

The Langkloof Orphanage stands as a symbol of resilience, compassion, and the power of community. With the continued support of Little Switzerland Resort, its main benefactor and Touching Dreams, the non-profit that sponsored of the renovations, this safe space will continue to touch many lives.

“When I recently took over the management of Langkloof, it was clear there was a lot of maintenance required. I reached out to Little Switzerland’s new general manager, Gerhard van den Heever, for support and he quickly got Touching Dreams and various hotel team members on board to work on a full refurbishment,” says Maria Mkhonza, Langkloof’s caretaker and principal.

Mkhonza expressed her gratitude to the maintenance lead, Justin Liebenberg, who coordinated everything; none of this would have been possible without all his hard work. Gerhard, and his assistant property custodian, Shalom Mashiri, were also actively involved.

“It’s been amazing to see the dedication from this group of people over the last few months,” says Mkhonza.

Our support of Langkloof Orphanage is a perfect example of the kind of work we aim to do as an organisation and aligns with our mission at Dream Hotels and Resorts to have a positive impact on the communities in which our properties operate,” says Chris Godenir, General Manager of Dream Hotels and Resorts’ Peninsula All-Suite Hotel and Touching Dreams Ambassador.

Exchanging his helmet and fire hose for chalk and textbooks, Buhle Silumko’s decision to return to school and pursue a new path is truly inspiring.

Flagstaff, South Africa (18 October 2024) – It takes immense courage to go back to school and embark on a whole new career path as an adult. In a world where many feel stuck in unfulfilling jobs, this decision is not only admirable but inspiring.

It also speaks to the bold and brave spirit of going after your dreams regardless of insignificant factors such as age, other people’s opinions or society’s standards.

Excited to embark on his calling and a new career is Buhle Silumko, who recently transitioned from being a firefighter to starting a new chapter as a primary school teacher.

The team from Working on Fire—Kishugu Joint Venture celebrated his new endeavour. They shared that Silumko, from the Mkhambathi Base in Flagstaff, pursued his Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase degree while working as a firefighter.

He was recruited in 2015 and served as a SHE Representative before he began his studies at Unisa in 2019.

“I’m grateful for the support I received from the programme and will instill the discipline I gained at Working on Fire in my students,” the new teacher shared.

Silumko’s story is a reminder that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. Parting ways on good terms, Working on Fire wished him every success as he continues to inspire future generations.

Dlala Africa, a beacon of hope in the Manenberg community, often plagued by violence, is providing holistic support, nurturing cricket talent, and empowering future generations.

Manenberg, South Africa (17 October 2024) – In the heart of Manenberg township in Cape Town, lies a remarkable organisation that is working hard to make a profound difference and provide a holistic approach to supporting young people.

Dlala Africa provides nutrition, after-school homework support, mentorship, and a safe space to play cricket at the Ohio Sports Field.

The organisation offers a place where children can escape the harsh realities of their surroundings plagued by gang violence and discover their potential.

While tension and threats prevail on the periphery, the gangs know that this is a no-go area, allowing boys and girls from the community to meet to play together on this field.

Mentors making a difference

Professional cricket coach Shahied Adonis runs the Dlala Africa NGO program where he offers his time voluntarily, while Taz Mohammed heads up the after-school programme also voluntarily.

Their aim, together with coach Anees, is to keep children off the streets and away from the dangers that lurk nearby.

“Many of the children walk up to 3km to get to the field where they are provided a meal and assisted with schoolwork before heading to the nets for cricket practice.

“Dlala Africa serves meals to 100-120 children daily. And for some, this is their only meal,” shares Stuart Goulding, Dlala Africa Board Member.

Township cricketers soar to greater heights

Over the past few years Taz, Shahied, and Anees have nurtured young talent where top talent is rewarded with a bursary or scholarship to a prestigious school like Bishops Diocesan College, South African College Schools, or Wynberg Boys.

One of the organisation’s shining players, Abdallah Bayoumy has signed his first pro contract with WP Blitz.

Another rising star, Adnaan Lagadien just scored his debut hundred for the South Africa u19 Emerging Team. He went on tour recently with the Bishops Diocesan College’s 1st cricket team and scored two double-hundreds in Sri Lanka!

“Many other first-division club teams have players who cut their teeth at the Ohio Sports Fields and have been mentored by Shahied before being given opportunities to serve as role models for those who follow.

“This window of opportunity means they can provide hope for their families and give back to the community,” adds Goulding.

Dlala Africa operates on R100,000 annually, serving 100-120 children each day.

The NGO is self-funded and with no principal donors, relies on the goodwill of the community.

“It is such a good cause to support, and Adnaan Lagadien is a testament to the large vein of untapped potential just waiting to be given a fair smack of the ball.”

To support Dlala Africa’s efforts in creating a brighter future for the youth of Manenberg email dlala.africanpo@gmail.com or stuartg@worldonline.co.za.

The Good Work Foundation (GWF) is on a mission to ignite the minds of young learners by rolling out robotics in rural Mpumalanga high schools, equipping them with the skills to shape a brighter tomorrow.

Mpumalanga, South Africa (17 October 2024) – Robotics and coding are the future, and the Good Work Foundation (GWF) is making sure that children in rural schools don’t miss out on being part of the technological advancements of our society.

The GWF is committed to empowering young minds with knowledge in coding, robotics, and digital literacy to inspire a brighter future.

Recently, it expanded its Open Learning Academy’s robotics and coding program, which has already made a significant impact in primary schools in rural Mpumalanga and the Free State. This expansion now includes high school learners in Grades 8 and 9.

This roll-out of the robotics and coding curriculum to older learners is a bold step and continuation of GWF’s mission to close the educational gap between rural and urban areas.

“If we only teach coding in primary school and then leave these pupils unsupported in high school, it’s easier for them to forget what they’ve learned. That’s why we continue supporting them into high school,” says Anorld Mdhluli, manager of the Open Learning Academy.

GWF’s coding and robotics programme provides hands-on learning experiences that enable students to build, code and test their own projects.

As learners delve into coding languages like Scratch 3.0 and interact with robots like Dash and Dot, they are not just learning technical skills; they are also unlocking a world of possibilities.

In a future shaped by technology, these young innovators will be the ones driving progress, solving complex problems, and creating a better world.

“The skills that coding offers are very important. Everyone growing up now will need these skills to be prepared for the future.”

According to GWF, launching the expanded programme at GWF’s Justicia Digital Learning Campus was a strategic decision as it is situated right next to Madlala High. This has made it easy to reach and accommodate the school’s Grade 8 and 9 learners.

The enthusiasm and support from both the community and parents have been positive so far, with many recognising the importance of preparing young people to seize development opportunities in a technology-driven world.

“Students will be equipped with computing skills that will help them in institutions of higher learning should they wish to pursue professions related to the computer sciences. But more importantly, they’ll be digitally literate and better prepared to face challenges in life – knowing how to adapt to new technologies,” says Ngwenyama.

With the programme being so well received and the pilot on course for success, GWF plans to continue expanding its Open Learning Academy offering to more high school learners over the next three years, further extending its reach in the communities it serves.

This growth will support the Department of Basic Education’s roll-out of the coding and robotics curriculum in public schools and will ensure that rural students are not left behind when it comes to taking full advantage of the technology-driven jobs of tomorrow.

As 60 eager mothers and their little ones gathered at Isivivana Centre in Khayelitsha, the magic of storytelling was brought to life during a fun and educational event by Nal’ibali and Embrace the Movement for Mothers.

Khayelitsha, South Africa (16 October 2024) – In an enriching effort to nurture bonds through love, books and play,  Nali’bali hosted a fun-filled Moms and Tots event.

Nal’ibali, a beacon of literacy and storytelling, joined forces with Embrace the Movement for Mothers, a social movement that celebrates the power of motherhood, and hosted the magical event which also sought to embrace their mother tongue.

Together, they created a space where mothers and their young children could bond, learn, and grow.

The Isivivana Centre in Khayelitsha, Cape Town was transformed into a world of wonder, filled with eager little minds and hearts.

Attendees got to enthral themselves in the magic of fictional stories, sparking their imaginations through the experiences of some of their favourite characters.

The captivating stories were brought to life by the enthusiastic Nal’ibali Story-Sparkers and Zazi Show’s Bongo Peteni known by toddlers as Sis’Bongo.

It was colourful, it was fun-filled! But beyond the joy and entertainment, this event was a profound celebration of language, culture, and the power of storytelling.

In an ever-changing, tough job market, ‘After School Programmes’ across the country are holding down the fort to help young South Africans level the playing field and access opportunities!

South Africa (16 October 2024) — The pressure of matric finals’ is weighted enough as it is. But it’s also one of many other pressures young South Africans face today. At the top of the pressure list is the big question: ‘What happens next?’ To which an infamously tough job market in our country stares back, often blankly.

Inflation, a recovering post-Covid market, technological advances replacing traditional jobs and a multitude of other reasons have all contributed to the bleakness of the job market for young people.

And the evidence is in the stats and social landscape of our country. South Africa has a ridiculously high unemployment rate of 32.9%. An under-resourced school system that doesn’t focus enough on bridging educational gaps that are often very wide due to underprivileged circumstances and, of course, the disproportional spread of opportunities.

But in the midst of the bleak picture is a light with huge potential to expand. That light lies in After-School Programmes (ASP) that are emerging as something of a hopeline for thousands of South Africa’s most vulnerable youth; providing them with imperative upskilling measures!

This year, the fifth annual Lights On After School campaign was launched; a campaign that’s about sharing and showcasing what ASPs are capable of. Led by non-profit The Learning Trust in partnership with the Western Cape Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport Youth Office, ASPs are proving to be a source of empowerment in the face of the tough job market; all while equipping future generations with resources to become adults they are proud of.

Here’s How ASPs Help

Critical Intervention

“ASPs act as critical interventions that can safeguard South Africa’s youth against significant barriers to economic participation. These programmes are stepping in to equip learners with digital literacy, technical skills and critical soft skills like problem-solving and emotional intelligence to thrive in a future workforce,” explains Charlene Petersen Voss, the Executive Director at the Learning Trust.

A Bridge for New Opportunities

While ASPs can be a bridge for educational gaps, they also act as a path for future opportunities largely through mentorship.

“The ASP sector is essential in levelling the playing field by providing access to mentorship, job shadowing, and other opportunities that are typically out of reach for marginalised youth,” Charlene says.

For Sophumelela Ketelo, the Chairperson of the Sophumelela Youth Development Programme, an ASP in the Eastern Cape, it’s a matter of meeting young people where they’re at and bridging off from that place.

Sophumelela says that he doesn’t blame the youth for being underprepared for the ever-changing job market.

“We often expect learners to be ready for the workplace while treating them like children, which delays their growth and readiness. In some cases, everything is done for them, making it difficult for them to appreciate the efforts of those supporting them. After school prgroammes are essential in adressing this gap, offering more than just academic support. They help build the confidence, literacy and life skills that learners need to succeed in an ever-changing world,” he says.

Guiding the Youth

ASP’s roles are heavily to do with guiding young people, especially those who cannot afford tertiary education, as Louise Retief, Programme Manager for the Rogz Academy shares. Rogz, who focus on Youth Development largely through its YearBeyond Programme in partnership with the Boost Africa Foundation, have been a part of helping guide many young people toward new avenues of hope.

The YearBeyond Programme helps Not in Education, Employment, or Training (NEET) members of the youth with over 3500 opportunities annually.  The youth are then able to support over 60,000 learners across the Eastern and Western Cape.

Expanding Access

Further opportunities for youth are created by The Learning Trust’s Catch-up Coalition, which forms part of the Social Employment Fund (SEF). Funded by the Public Employment Stimulus (PES) through the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC), the SEF addresses both unemployment and education at the same time by employing young people in roles that directly enhance educational outcomes.

Through partnerships with over 50 community-based organisations, SEF has helped create more than 10,000 paid work opportunities, benefiting over 180,000 children and youth!

“In the last year of SEF, we have seen 52% of youth exiting to permanent employment, with 44% pursuing further studies,” says Petersen Voss.

“We continue to advocate for government funding for initiatives like the Social Employment Fund and National Youth Service, which not only creates job opportunities and workplace experience for young people but also addresses our education crisis.”

The Jeppe High School water polo team gracefully honoured and celebrated Emmanuel Twala, the man responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the school’s swimming pool, at a recently held Aquatics dinner.

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 October 2024) – In a world that often celebrates those in the spotlight, it is always so admirable when one boldly takes a moment to acknowledge the people who play a quiet yet crucial role in their successes.

Demonstrating this in a profound gesture that tugged at our heartstrings, was Jeppe High School for Boys’ newly-appointed water polo captain for 2024/5, Diego Coutinho.

At the Aquatics dinner held on Saturday night, 12 October, Diego made a heartfelt request. He wanted Emmanuel Twala, the man responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the school’s swimming pool complex, to be invited as a special guest.

The polo team wanted to thank Emmanuel for his tireless work and dedication to keeping the pool in prime condition for years.

“Many people are thanked at these dinners and I just thought that Mr Twala should be one of them,” Diego said.

“We wouldn’t be able to train and play matches in such a great environment if it weren’t for his work.”

Emmanuel has been working at Jeppe for 12 years and has been in charge of the Aquatics Centre for 10 of those.

“I knew they wanted me to attend the dinner, but I was surprised at the generous gift they gave me,” Emmanuel said.

“The Jeppe boys have always been polite and I have got thank yous from them over the years, but this was something special. I am very proud and honoured that they thought of me.”

A group of dedicated and passionate students have been chosen to take on the mantle of leadership for the year 2025 at Marist Brothers Linmeyer. They are poised to lead with compassion, support their peers and leave a lasting legacy.

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 October 2024) – Ready to assume their roles of leaders -with a whole lot of heart- are the new members of the Marist Brothers Linmeyer Leadership Team for 2025!

These new student leaders will take over the reins from their predecessors not just as figures of authority but as individuals who lead by serving others with humility, compassion and integrity.

These qualities will greatly help in serving and supporting their peers and the younger students who come after them.

Not only will they ensure that everyone follows school rules, but also that they are cared for and guided to reach their fullest potential as they lay the foundation for life after school.

The shift from “Prefect” to “Leadership Team” reflects Marist Brothers Linmeyer’s commitment to fostering a culture of servant leadership, which prioritises the needs of others and contributes to a more compassionate and just society.

“By embracing the term Leadership Team, we believe this title better represents the collaborative and service-oriented spirit we aim to cultivate. These students are leaders who will work alongside their peers to make a positive impact on our school community,” shares the school’s Head of Ethos, Ms C. Rieker.
