Dr Rinesh Chetty opens up about what life was like as a doctor during the pandemic in a new Profmed Series, “We Are South African.” He and his team are heroes for all the lives they saved!

Durban, South Africa (22 July 2024)Profmed‘s new ‘We Are South African’ series introduces us to some incredible South Africans. The first episode of 2024 has been released, and we get to meet Dr Rinesh Chetty, a home-grown hero, doctor and 5-time COVID survivor!

Doctor Chetty shares his experience of what life was like when the pandemic hit and how he and his team handled it. Hearing Dr Chetty explain how they managed to save so many lives all the while having to overcome so many obstacles, gives one goosebumps!

When the COVID-19 pandemic hit, Dr Chetty’s Durban-based hospital was soon overwhelmed with more patients than beds or equipment. However, this isn’t a tragic story. It’s a tale of a doctor, a team of theatre nurses and staff, and a brand-new—but empty—respiratory ward that a team of South African heroes turned into a COVID-19 ward by volunteering their time.

Dr Rinesh Chetty reflects on how his family played such a vital role in his mental health at that time. His daughter took care to moisturise his dry face, his son encouraged him to play with Lego so they could unwind together, and his wife gave him the grace of time away from home so he could be at the hospital, saving lives. It was a family effort, with many of their new traditions kept firmly in place to this day.

Good Things Guy’s very own Brent Lindeque is the host of this incredible series, meeting these proudly South African heroes and listening to their stories. These stories show what is possible when we, South Africans, band together and refuse to be brought down by circumstances beyond our control.
