A sister’s selfless stem cell donation has given Amanda Busch, an oncology pharmacist and mother of two, a second chance at life, proving that love and hope can truly save lives.

Johannesburg, South Africa (22 October 2024) – In a heartwarming display of love, Amanda Busch, an oncology pharmacist and mother of two, found herself on the receiving end of a life-changing gift — a stem cell donation from her sister, which helped her beat leukaemia and enter remission.

Amanda’s story is not just one of survival but of community, hope, and the power of family bonds.

“On the day before Father’s Day in 2010, I was diagnosed with chronic myeloid leukaemia when my general practitioner ran some tests after I sought treatment for referred shoulder pain,” Amanda shares.

As the oncology manager at Medipost Pharmacy, Amanda was no stranger to the medical world, but this time, she became the patient, relying on the very medications she once dispensed to others.

Amanda’s journey took a complicated turn when she fell pregnant unexpectedly, requiring her to pause her cancer treatment and switch to a pregnancy-safe medication. After her baby was born, the doctors advised that her best option for beating the cancer would be a bone marrow transplant. This marked the beginning of a long search for a donor match — a process that can take years.

“So many kind friends and members of the community came forward offering to be tested as bone marrow donors,” Amanda recalls.

But with the odds of finding a match outside of biological relatives standing at only one in 100,000, Amanda was beyond grateful when her sister emerged as an almost perfect candidate.

“I thank my lucky stars that I have an amazing sister who was so generous in her support and willingness to make this lifesaving stem cell donation to me.”

The process of stem cell donation is often simpler than many imagine, similar to donating blood, with donors taking medication to boost their stem cell production. This, combined with the growing need to diversify South Africa’s stem cell registry, highlights the importance of raising awareness. Amanda’s story is a shining example of what is possible when people come together in support of one another.

“Although the chance of being a match for a stranger in need of a lifesaving transfusion is small, there are children, mothers, and fathers praying to find a genetically similar tissue match from a donor who can give them the same chance at life I had,” Amanda says.

Her hope is that more South Africans will step forward to register as donors, knowing that they hold the power to give someone the gift of life.

Following the transplant, Amanda spent 16 days in isolation at the haematology unit of Netcare Pretoria East Hospital to protect against infection.

But despite the challenges, she reflects on her journey with gratitude: “Thankfully, in my case, the side effects were not too severe, and I began the path to recovery that has led me to still be in remission seven years later. I have so much to be grateful for.”

Rentia Myburgh, group sales and marketing director at Medipost Holdings, adds that awareness is crucial in saving lives: “We salute the haematologists and healthcare professionals, as well as all registered donors, for your contribution to saving the lives of people like our valued colleague Amanda.”

For those inspired by Amanda’s story, registering as a bone marrow donor is free and non-invasive. Visit https://sabmr.co.za/become-a-donor/ and https://www.dkms-africa.org/get-involved/become-a-donor to learn more about how you can become a potential lifesaver.

Amanda’s story ends on a note of pure positivity. After years of uncertainty, she is now living in remission, watching her children grow up, and feeling overwhelmingly thankful for the love, support, and medical expertise that brought her to this point.

Her message is simple yet profound: “The gift of life is yours to give.”

South Africa isn’t just a country – it’s a living, breathing reminder of resilience, joy, and undeniable spirit. Despite our challenges, we are a nation that thrives on laughter, community, and an unwavering love for life.

Johannesburg, South Africa (22 October 2024) – Let’s be real: South Africa isn’t perfect. We’ve got our challenges – and plenty of them. But somehow, despite the ups and downs, we are an incredible nation filled with a unique kind of magic. Whether it’s the humour we use to laugh through tough times, our ability to “maak a plan,” or the warmth of our people, South Africans have something special that’s hard to match.

A tweet by ShellsPemBroke has been giving people all the feels. It’s a thread about why South Africa is so f**king great, and it’s still spreading like wildfire on X (Twitter). It’s the kind of feel-good content that makes you want to shout from the rooftops: “YES! THIS is why I love this place.”

Recently, Good Things Guy had the pleasure of sitting down with ShellsPemBroke, and if you think she’s proudly South African online, she’s even more so in person. She believes wholeheartedly that we are the greatest nation in the world… and we couldn’t agree more! Her tweet, which has become a movement of its own, started with just seven reasons why South Africa is so f**king great. But since then, people have jumped in, adding their own reasons, and the list has grown far beyond 100!

Here’s the original post that started it all:

“I am a South African. And I think we’re kinda f**king great. Sorry, but this is factual. I live in an underrated country. Here’s a thread of why I feel this way. Spoiler: you’re gonna hate some of these.”

Reason No 1: Us.

South Africans. That’s it. No sarcasm. No joke. We are THE BEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD. You can make friends with literally ANYONE you meet on a daily basis. We really like liking people. Accidentally compliment someone’s nails, and you’re basically in their will.

Reason No 2: Potholes.

Say what you want. We are some of the most cautious and observant drivers in the world. At no point do we feel comfortable feeling comfortable driving. The lack of infrastructure means we could and should be on the set of Mission Impossible.

Reason No 3: Comedy.

OMFG THE COMEDY!!! Who in the world laughs at themselves as much as we do? Honestly? The world may be burning, but we are toasting marshmallows. How are SA comedians not more popular???

Reason No 4: The scenery.

F**k ALL THE WAY OFF. I mean. Come on. My sister does the hiking stuff and every vid she posts makes me damp in my pants. It’s not just Cape Town. It’s f**king EVERYWHERE. Urban chic. Mountains for days. Animals the rest of the world drools over. F**king hell.

Reason No 5: Zombie-apocalypse-readiness.

Listen, you know we’re prepped to deal without electricity and basic public services. When the world goes to shit, the Saffas will be claiming the planet. I can filter my own water, thank you.

Reason No 6: Sportsball!

Never EVER f**k with a South African and a placement or a gold medal. We take this sh*t SERIOUSLY. And we’re GOOD at it! Respect our prowess!

Reason No 7: It’s us again.

We’re really the best. Seriously, your mate, your family, your car guard, your waiter: they are all the absolute best. Take some time and find out. South Africans make South Africa. And we’re so f**king cool.

The replies started rolling in immediately, with people jumping on the feel-good train and adding their own reasons. Here are just a few:

“It’s the people. We are so f**king cool.”

“Because… us.”

“Chesa Nyama.”

“Don’t forget the wine!”

“We are a family. South Africans are siblings in the true sense. We fight every other day amongst ourselves. But try one of us and find out real quick.”

“Despite our politicians, we are blessed.”

“If I bump my own toe, a stranger will say sorry.”

“Hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie.”

“We are the best in everything.”

“Lalela!!! South Africans are the only country that starts a sentence in English and completes it in any of the other official languages. Kumnandi ukuba lana.”

“We have the ability to ‘maak a plan.'”

“South Africa is WAY underrated.”

“The food! All the food.”

“The Bokke.”

“We are free.”

“We know how to laugh.”

It’s clear that this list could go on forever. There’s just so much that makes South Africa truly unique. From our ability to laugh through the hard times to our deep sense of community, we’re not just surviving – we’re thriving. And despite everything, we remain a nation full of life, love, and spirit. The optimism in ShellsPemBroke’s tweet has sparked a movement of appreciation for this wonderfully complex, frustrating, beautiful place we call home.

So if you ever need a reminder of why South Africa is so f**king great, just take a scroll through this thread. You’ll find reason after reason to fall in love with the place all over again. And the best part? It’s growing every day – because there are just that many reasons to love South Africa.

Ackermans is bringing the joy again with their annual Baby of the Year competition, launching an irresistibly cute campaign that taps into “baby language” and celebrates the magic of parenthood, play, and connection!

Johannesburg, South Africa (21 October 2024) – It’s that time of year again! Ackermans has brought back one of South Africa’s most adored competitions—the annual Baby of the Year!

This year, the campaign kicked off with an irresistibly cute advert introducing a fun new “tool” designed to understand “Baby Language,” and it’s sure to put a smile on every parent’s face.

The Baby of the Year competition has become a much-anticipated event for many parents. It’s more than just a chance to showcase their little ones—it’s an opportunity for their baby to become an Ackermans model and win amazing vouchers!

“Back by popular demand, this competition gives parents the opportunity to celebrate their bundles of joy in true Ackermans style. This year, the stakes are high as Ackermans searches for those charming personalities who love to have fun, express themselves and of course, have a lot to say,” shares Bronwyn Pretorius, Chief of Marketing at Ackermans.

The advert that’s stealing hearts features media personality Sne Dladla, who spends time with some of South Africa’s cutest babies, asking them all kinds of questions. The twist? An “AI” program steps in to interpret what the babies might be saying, and the results are as hilarious as they are adorable! But here’s the catch: “AI” in this campaign doesn’t stand for “Artificial Intelligence”—it’s “Ackermans Intelligence,” a fun nod to technology with a heavy dose of baby cuteness.

While the AI interpretations are, of course, not real, it’s impossible not to laugh at how accurate some of the “responses” seem to be. You might even find yourself wondering if the babies truly had those thoughts in mind!

“In light of global conversations around the use of AI and creativity, and what it means for us humans, we set out to purposefully tackle this topic through this new content piece. We believe now more than ever we should celebrate connection and joy. As a leading retailer in baby and kids apparel, our product offering is designed with play in mind, and we want to encourage parents to engage and cherish these unique and special moments with their little ones,” adds Pretorius.

Want your little one to be in the running for the title of Ackermans Baby of the Year? Here’s what you need to do:

Step 1: Dress your baby in their cutest Ackermans outfit
Step 2: Capture a picture or video that shows off your baby’s unique personality while rocking their Ackermans look
Step 3: Upload your picture or video using the hashtag #MyAckermansBaby2024 on Facebook, TikTok, or Instagram
Step 4: Tag Ackermans and make sure you’re following them on all their social platforms!

This year’s competition is all about celebrating those unforgettable baby moments that bring us joy and connection. So, whether your little one is a budding comedian or has the world’s sweetest smile, don’t miss out on the chance to make some incredible memories—and maybe even see your baby shining on Ackermans’ next campaign!

The 2025 Australian Firefighters Calendar is here, and it’s more than just sizzling photos – it’s a powerful force for change, pairing Australia’s bravest heroes with adorable animals to raise millions for life-saving causes across the globe.

Australia (21 October 2023) – The Australian Firefighters Calendar is back for 2025, and it’s bringing the heat once again! This year’s edition promises to be bigger, better, and cuter than ever, with a unique theme that pairs the country’s bravest heroes with some of the most adorable animals you’ve ever seen. From playful puppies to cuddly koalas, these firefighters are showing their softer side while supporting fantastic causes. It’s not just a calendar – it’s a celebration of courage, compassion, and community spirit.

For years, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has captured hearts across the world, and many of our Good Things Guy readers eagerly wait for the announcement of its release. Though we don’t get the calendars physically in South Africa, our annual article is the next best thing!

Since its launch in 1993, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has raised over $3.5 million for charities across Australia and beyond. And 2025 is no different – the calendar will continue supporting vital causes, from wildlife rescues to children fighting cancer. This year, the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital is one of the proud recipients of the calendar’s charity donations, helping rescue and rehabilitate injured wildlife.

As Dr Bree Talbot, Head Wildlife Veterinary Surgeon at the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital, beautifully puts it: “This generous support allows us to continue saving Australian wildlife and making a lasting difference.”

But it’s not just about the pictures – these firefighters have become global conservation ambassadors, using their fame to raise awareness for causes like the protection of Australian wildlife. The 2025 calendar editions feature over 25 firefighters from aviation, military, and urban fire services. Each month reveals heart-warming photos of these heroes with animals like koalas, kittens, and even horses.

There are five different editions this year, so there’s a calendar for every animal lover out there!

With the 2025 Australian Firefighters Calendar, we get a feel-good mix of bravery, kindness, and a whole lot of cuteness. What more could you ask for? Grab a cup of tea, enjoy the pictures, and let’s celebrate these everyday heroes who are making the world a better place, one adorable moment at a time!

Welcome to The Friday Five – your go-to guide for five feel-good recommendations to kickstart your weekend. From gripping films and addictive series to fresh music and local gems, I’ve handpicked the best of the best to make sure you’re always in the know. Ready to dive in? Let’s make this week unforgettable!

Johannesburg, South Africa (19 October 2024) – I’ve always had a deep love for movies, series, music, entertainment, and just getting out there.

One of the best parts of my job is that sometimes, I get the chance to experience these things before anyone else does. There’s something about seeing a movie ahead of its release, or getting hooked on a series before the rest of the world even knows it exists, that makes me want to shout from the rooftops.

So, with that in mind, I’ve created “The Friday Five” – a shout-out to five good things you should check out this week. Let’s dive in!

🎬 Movies for Your Watchlist:

Sticking with the Halloween vibes, I got to watch two killer films this week that’ll give you all the feels.

First up is Caddo Lake. When an 8-year-old girl goes missing on the mysterious Caddo Lake, a series of past deaths and disappearances begin to connect, unravelling a broken family’s history. The film kicks off with a slow burn in the first act, setting the scene beautifully. But it’s the second act where everything takes a twist – and trust me, by the third act, you’ll be questioning everything you thought you knew. The cinematography is stunning, and it’s one of those rare films that sticks with you long after it ends. There’s a line in the movie I just can’t shake: “They didn’t mean to leave us.” It’s haunting. Caddo Lake is now available on MAX and will be hitting cinemas soon.

The second film, It’s What’s Inside, is wild! The premise is a group of friends that gather for a pre-wedding party that descends into an existential nightmare when an estranged friend arrives with a mysterious game that awakens long-hidden secrets, desires and grudges. I can’t give too much away, but let me just say this – it’s one of those films where you’re constantly asking, “What the hell is going on?!” It’s a total rollercoaster. You’ll want to put your phone down for this one. It’s fun, it’s thrilling, and a horror ride you don’t want to miss. Now available on Netflix.

🎥 Series You Should Be Watching Right Now:

I was really excited for Doctor Odyssey – I mean, come on, Grey’s Anatomy meets cruise ships with Joshua Jackson at the helm? What’s not to love, right? Well, a lot, actually. It’s like a medical car crash at sea – you might want to give this one a skip but maybe watch at least one episode for the sheer absurdity of it all.

If you want to see Joshua Jackson in something that’s actually good, check out 2023’s Fatal Attraction or 2021’s Dr Death. Both are captivating, and Jackson’s performances are absolutely outstanding. You won’t regret it! Doctor Odyssey (if you want to give it a go) is available on Hulu, ABC, or Prime (to rent), while Fatal Attraction and Dr Death are both on AppleTV and Prime (to rent).

On the flip side, Disclaimer is absolutely brilliant! Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline are perfection. The series follows Catherine Ravenscroft, a television documentary journalist who’s made a career exposing the wrongdoings of highly respected institutions. The direction is stellar, thanks to Alfonso Cuarón – you can really feel his signature style in the long, immersive shots. We’re only three episodes in, and I’m already hooked! It’s currently streaming on AppleTV+.

🎶 Music You Need to Hear:

On the music front, you’ve got to check out Mike Posner’s “Beautiful Day” (acoustic version). It’s one of those songs you’ll want to start every morning with. Posner’s struggles and near-death experiences inspired this heartfelt anthem, and it’s a reminder that every day is a gift. I can’t stop playing it on repeat – it just hits differently every time. It’s a beautiful day to be alive.

Another track you need to hear is Grace VanderWaal’s “What’s Left of Me”. Grace first wowed us when she won America’s Got Talent back in 2015 at just 12 years old. Fast forward nine years, and she’s found has found her name and her way. I honestly haven’t stopped listening to it. Grace has truly come into her own, and I’m here for it!

📱Get Appy:

Okay, let’s talk apps. Duolingo is an absolute vibe right now. I know it’s been around forever – I first joined in October 2013 – but I recently gave it a proper go again, and I’m loving it. I decided to switch from French (what was I even thinking in 2013?) and started learning Zulu.

After just three weeks, I’m actually having conversations with people! The confidence it’s given me is insane. Seriously, if you’re thinking about learning a new language, give Duolingo another shot – it’s like having a pocket-sized tutor. Ngiyayithanda.

🍴 Places to Go:

Last but certainly not least, if you’re in or around Umhlanga, treat yourself to breakfast at The Oyster Box. This place is everything you’d want and then some. The breakfast buffet is next-level – we’re talking bottomless champagne, overflowing oysters, and a view that’ll leave you breathless. It’s not just a meal; it’s an experience. If you’re looking to spoil yourself or someone you love, this is the spot. Trust me, you’ll leave with a full heart (and belly)!

There’s so much good stuff to enjoy out there, and I hope my Friday Five gives you a little spark to check out something new this week. Whether it’s a thrilling film, a captivating series, a fresh tune, or even brushing up on a new language, there’s always something to discover. Life is too short not to indulge in the things that bring us joy – so go on, treat yourself!

Here’s to good vibes and even better entertainment!

Education has the power to change lives, and for the learners at Lavela Secondary School in Soweto, that transformation just got a major boost—thanks to Hyundai Automotive South Africa’s donation of a brand-new library and learning centre, opening doors to limitless opportunities for over 800 students.

Soweto, South Africa (17 October 2024) – Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world. This timeless wisdom by Nelson Mandela has come to life in Soweto, where the learners of Lavela Secondary School have received a tremendous gift that will impact their future for generations.

Thanks to Hyundai Automotive South Africa, Lavela now has a brand-new library and learning centre, one of the latest milestones in Hyundai’s ongoing mission to support education across the country.

Hyundai Automotive South Africa, in collaboration with Hyundai Motor Company in Korea and the DP World Motus Community Trust, has proudly handed over its 22nd library to Lavela Secondary School. This project is part of the company’s long-standing corporate social investment programme, which began in 2013 and has already brought essential learning resources to many schools in previously disadvantaged communities. This brand-new facility will empower more than 800 learners at Lavela Secondary, giving them the tools and knowledge to unlock their potential.

At the handover event, the excitement and joy was palpable. Lavela’s principal, Neo Sithole, expressed heartfelt gratitude to Hyundai, committing to making the most of the new resource.

He passionately remarked, “We pledge to use it effectively and efficiently, and in our purpose as educators to accompany our learners to responsible adulthood, to produce refined and cultured adults. The library, the resource centre will contribute to that.”

But this isn’t just a donation of books and shelves; it’s an investment in the future. Hyundai’s generous sponsorship also includes the salary of a trained librarian, ensuring that the resource centre will be managed professionally and maintained as a place of learning and growth for years to come. This holistic approach highlights Hyundai’s dedication to making a sustainable difference in these communities.

So why is this such a good thing? Because education is the foundation of progress. It is the cornerstone of personal growth and societal improvement. Libraries like these open up a world of possibilities for young learners. They are a gateway to knowledge, fostering curiosity and critical thinking. Hyundai’s initiative provides students with the resources to read, learn, and ultimately take control of their future.

Gideon Jansen van Rensburg, CEO of Hyundai Automotive South Africa, spoke about the importance of education during the event, encouraging students to seize the opportunities before them.

“The Hyundai library legacy commemorates our values and corporate investment initiatives. We pride ourselves in giving back to the community that lives among us. We believe in education as a sustainable way to change lives for the better.”

“You are deserving recipients and should all be very proud of yourselves,” he said, adding that the library represents the company’s values and commitment to community upliftment.

His inspirational words painted a vivid picture of what this initiative is all about.

“Today is like giving your school an airplane. Some of you will be scared to use it, some of you will just be passengers on the ride. But there is an opportunity for everyone to learn to become the pilot on this airplane.”

Van Rensburg also emphasised that the key to success in today’s world is understanding what you read. With technological advancements like artificial intelligence rapidly changing how we live and work, the ability to comprehend information critically is more important than ever.

This new library will equip Lavela’s students with the necessary skills to thrive in a world that values knowledge and adaptability.

“You need to be able to read with comprehension to understand. The world is evolving; we see it every day in our business. Artificial intelligence is taking over. The internet is the place where everybody goes. But the basis of all of this is you need to be able to read and understand what you read so when people tell you a story you can verify that it is the truth.”

Through its continued dedication to education, Hyundai is enriching the lives of learners and also investing in the future of South Africa. Over the past decade, the company has invested over R31,5 million in creating 22 libraries, proving that true change starts with opportunity.

This library is more than just a building filled with books—it’s a door to a world of possibilities. And as the learners of Lavela Secondary step through it, they will be empowered to change not just their lives, but the world.

Ethan Bain and his crew, Team Vineyard, are running the Cape Town Marathon, not just for the finish line but for hope—honouring his late sisters, his father’s fight with cancer, and the courage of every child battling this relentless disease.

spar hero of the week

Western Cape, South Africa (16 October 2024) – Ethan Bain is lacing up for something much bigger than a race. This year, the 22-year-old son of one of the founders of “The Cows” is taking on the Cape Town Marathon with a purpose, a deeply personal one. It’s not just about the miles; it’s about the hope he carries with him, in memory of his sisters, in honour of his father’s battle and for his housemate who was recently diagnosed.

The Bain family has faced more heartbreak than most can even imagine, yet through it all, they’ve held onto hope. They’ve lived it, shared it, and now Ethan is running for it.

Grant and Kerrin Bain lost their daughters, Jessica and Georgia, to cancer, and now, Grant himself is facing his own fight. But instead of being consumed by despair, Ethan is using his grief, his love for his family, and his determination to make a difference. Together with five friends, he’s running the Cape Town Marathon to raise money for CHOC (Childhood Cancer Foundation of South Africa), an organisation that’s been close to the Bain family’s heart since the devastating loss of their daughters.

Ethan’s journey began with the story of his parents, who started The Cows to fundraise for CHOC after their youngest daughter, Jessica, passed away at just 20 months old. In 2007, when Jess was 10 months old, she was diagnosed with Neuroblastoma, a rare childhood cancer.

“Overnight in April 2007, our lives changed completely, and we spent more time in hospital than at home,” Kerrin shares.

Jessica endured chemotherapy, collapsed lungs, and a stem cell transplant before her little body couldn’t take any more. She passed away in February 2008. But her spirit, as her mother says, was “hope in action,” and that hope lives on through everything The Cows stand for… making a difference, celebrating life, and fighting for children facing cancer.

Nine years later, the unthinkable happened again. Their daughter Georgia was diagnosed with a brain tumour at the age of nine. Despite surgery, radiation, and chemo, the tumour returned.

Kerrin explains that Georgia was “courageous and brave”.

In December 2019, after a long battle, Georgia passed away at home, surrounded by the love and peace her family fought so hard to give her.

And then, two years ago, Grant Bain, the heart of this resilient family, was diagnosed with cancer.

Despite all of this, the Bains are not defeated.

Ethan’s marathon mission is a way to honour the memory of his sisters and to show his father that the fight for hope continues. With five of his friends, Ethan is gearing up to take on the Cape Town Marathon on 20th October 2024.

Their goal isn’t just to cross the finish line but to raise funds and awareness for CHOC, helping other families navigate the devastating world of childhood cancer.

“Along the way and on the day, we aim to raise funds for CHOC Childhood Cancer Foundation SA, a remarkable organisation supporting children with cancer and their families,” says Ethan.

“Cancer is a battle no person, and especially a child, should face alone, and we believe every step we take can bring hope, motivation, and healing. By running this marathon, we are not only challenging ourselves physically but also championing and honouring the brave children who fight cancer every day.”

Ethan, along with Dom Von Honne, James Henderson, James Fleming, Stephan Liebenberg and Matthew van der Linde, has already raised over R85,000, with hopes of bringing in much more by the time the race arrives. They’re calling on South Africans to join the cause, to support CHOC and to be part of something truly special.

Running together as “Team Vineyard,” the six young men are also dedicating their efforts to their 7th housemate, Tom Walters, who was recently diagnosed with cancer. This race is not just for the Bains but for Tom, too, and for every family that has faced the challenges of this terrible disease.

They are running for hope.

Hope that even in the face of unimaginable loss, we can continue to fight, to make a difference and to honour those we’ve lost by supporting those still in the battle.

Every step this team takes is a reminder that hope is powerful and it’s something we can all carry forward.

South African comedian Themba Robin has done it again, leaving the nation in stitches with his latest viral skit—this time hilariously pitching the controversial pandemic “Ambulance Scooters” on Dragons Den UK in a side-splitting spoof that perfectly captures our unique sense of humour.

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 October 2024) – South Africans are no strangers to turning challenging situations into moments of laughter and this latest video by local comedian Themba Robin is a shining example of that spirit.

In a hilarious twist, Themba took to the global stage of Dragons’ Den UK (well, sort of) to pitch the now-famous “Ambulance Scooters”—and the internet can’t stop laughing!

Known for his witty skits and comedic genius, Themba has gained a huge following on social media for his ability to tackle everyday issues with humour that resonates deeply with South Africans. Whether it’s poking fun at load shedding or doing parody interviews, his content always delivers a much-needed laugh.

And, once again, he isn’t disappointing us!

In his latest comedic masterpiece, Themba spliced real footage from Dragons’ Den UK, inserting himself into the scene as an enthusiastic entrepreneur pitching a wild idea—Ambulance Scooters. For those unfamiliar, the concept of ambulance scooters was introduced during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa. These scooters, “designed” to navigate through congested areas more quickly than traditional ambulances, sparked a lot of controversy, with many questioning their practicality and effectiveness. While some (mostly in government) saw it as a necessary solution in a time of crisis, others couldn’t help but poke fun at the idea.

Of course, Themba’s take on it is pure gold! In the video, he confidently pitches the scooters to the Dragons, highlighting their “sleek” design and “innovative” purpose. The result? A mash-up of serious business talk and absurdity that had viewers crying with laughter. The editing is so spot-on that it feels as though the Dragons are genuinely (not) considering this offbeat pitch.

The video has gone viral, and the reaction on social media is priceless!

“My aunt sleeps with the Minister of Transport….. I’m on the floor.”

“Only a true South African could understand this humour.”

“This made my day! 😂 Us South Africans survive on humour!”

“That almost made me pee my pants!”

So, if you’re in need of a good laugh today, do yourself a favour and watch the video—it’s guaranteed to brighten your day and leave you in stitches.

In a city where the signs of decay are hard to ignore, the “Jozi vs Jozi” account has become both an irritation and a force for good – exposing Johannesburg’s decline with stark “before and after” photos while (hopefully) igniting a movement of citizens determined to reclaim their city.

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 October 2024) – Johannesburg, a city known for its boundless energy and opportunities, is officially described on the City of Joburg website as a place that “still attracts those who want to realise their dreams and achieve success.” The city’s mission, according to the website, is to “foster citizen-centric ethos through service excellence” and ensure “a well-governed, managed, and developed City with enhanced levels of accountability and citizen participation.” Their vision focuses on a “clean, green, healthy and safe urban environment.”

However, if you ask many Joburg residents today, these ideals seem far from reality.

For years now, Johannesburg has faced challenges with service delivery, safety, and general urban decay. While the city’s promises of governance and pride are noble, many would argue that they aren’t being fully realised.

Enter “Jozi vs Jozi“, a viral X (formerly Twitter) account that has sparked a different kind of conversation—a conversation about ownership, responsibility, and hope for a brighter Jozi.

The Rise of “Jozi vs Jozi”

Started in September 2024, “Jozi vs Jozi” has taken social media by storm, amassing over 22,000 followers in just a few weeks. With its no-nonsense approach, the account posts daily “before and after” photos of Johannesburg, highlighting places that have fallen into neglect. The images are stark: broken pavements, littered streets, and dilapidated buildings—side by side with older photos of vibrant, clean, and well-maintained spaces from yesteryear.

These photos have shocked many residents, some of whom have lived in the city their whole lives but failed to notice the extent of its decline. Others are seeing it as a wake-up call. The account’s bio, reading, “a labour of love for a city that means a lot to many,” hints at its motivation.

Though no one has claimed ownership of the account yet, its message is loud and clear: Johannesburg is not what it once was, but it could be again.

Interestingly, “Jozi vs Jozi” follows only one account—the City of Joburg itself. This symbolic action reinforces the idea that while the city may have its issues, it’s not beyond redemption. And perhaps that’s the key takeaway: we can’t rely on the government alone to fix everything. Instead, there’s a growing recognition that active citizenship is essential to turning things around.

The Broken Window Theory: Why “Jozi vs Jozi” May Be a Catalyst for Change

One concept that ties directly into the work of “Jozi vs Jozi” is the “broken window” theory. This theory suggests that visible signs of disorder—like broken windows, graffiti, or litter—can encourage further neglect and even crime while maintaining order and cleanliness can foster a sense of pride and safety. In Johannesburg’s case, “Jozi vs Jozi” may be doing more than just posting photos; it could be sparking a revolution of active citizenship.

By raising awareness around the city’s decline, the account could inspire more people to take action, whether through organising clean-up initiatives or holding local officials accountable.

Johannesburg’s story isn’t just about what’s gone wrong. It’s also about the incredible grassroots movements that have sprung up in response to these challenges. Across the city, communities have banded together to reclaim their spaces, showing that when citizens take ownership, change is possible.

The Power of Community Initiatives

If you need proof that active citizenship works, look no further than initiatives like the Cape Town Central City Improvement District, Better Bedfordview, The Boksburg Community Project and Praboa in Parkhurst.

These projects, led by dedicated residents, have made significant strides in cleaning up and revitalising their neighbourhoods.

One standout example is the Rejuvenation of The Wilds, a once-neglected park in Houghton that has been transformed into a safe, clean, and vibrant public space thanks to the tireless efforts of community volunteers. This project has restored a beloved green space and has also sparked a renewed sense of pride among residents.

Another inspiring story comes from Better Fourways, where local residents have taken the reins to improve security, cleanliness, and overall quality of life in their area. The initiative has successfully worked alongside local authorities to maintain public spaces, proving that collaboration between government and citizens can yield impressive results.

These projects highlight a powerful message: Johannesburg is a city of resilience. Its people care deeply, and when they come together, they can achieve incredible things.

Getting Our Hands Dirty

Becoming an active citizen in Johannesburg (or any city) starts with small, impactful actions that collectively drive change.

Here are five ways you can make a difference:

  • Join local community projects: Get involved with community initiatives in your area to help clean up and maintain public spaces. And if you can’t join, support them! Even with just R10 a month, many R10s make thousands.
  • Organise clean-up days: Rally neighbours to tackle litter, paint over graffiti, or plant trees in neglected areas. And do it yourself! If you run or walk in your neighbourhood, take a Woolies bag (we know you have too many) and clean up while you’re out and about.
  • Hold local authorities accountable: Attend community meetings or engage with local representatives to ensure service delivery issues are addressed. Get to know your Ward Councillors. Engage with them regularly.
  • Report issues: Use platforms like social media or city apps to report broken infrastructure, illegal dumping, or potholes, ensuring they get the needed attention.
  • Support small businesses: Strengthening local economies by shopping at and promoting small, neighbourhood businesses fosters a sense of pride and community investment.

A Bright Future for Johannesburg

The rise of “Jozi vs Jozi” and the success of various community-driven projects across the city show that Johannesburg’s future is not set in stone. The challenges are real, but so is the potential for change.

As the cover photo on the “Jozi vs Jozi” account reads: “An ode to a Joburg we once knew and hope to meet again, further down the road.”

While the city may be facing its fair share of difficulties, the growing wave of active citizenship and community engagement suggests that a better, brighter Johannesburg is possible—and it may be just around the corner.

So, while we can’t deny that Jozi is facing some tough times, the people of this city are proving that they won’t sit idly by. They are stepping up, taking action, and inspiring others to do the same. And in that, there is hope.
