A full circle, bitter-sweet moment has seen an expat-loved bakery return back home; a reminder of how much a taste of home means to South Africans overseas.

Karoo, South Africa (04 September 2023) — One thing about South Africans (wherever we may find our feet in the world) is we’ll do a lot for a taste of home.

Whether it’s breaking the internet for the love of marshmallow chocolatey goodness during Easter or beyond, or a mission for a whiff of a local food chain’s familiarity, South Africans overseas tend to go the extra mile for a taste of home goodness.

Recently, one hub Saffas in Auckland knew they could rely on for all kinds of South African-approved baked goods (from melktert to Cape Malay koeksisters) made a big announcement. A Taste of Home is returning home and will bring the familiar flavours that made life in a new place a little easier back to base.

The bakery has been supported by treat lovers across the pond in New Zealand for over seven years. While its big move to the Karoo might be bitter-sweet, it’s also a full-circle moment that reminds us all of the power that something as culturally simple as food actually holds.

Especially as Heritage Month unfolds, it rings true that at least for South Africans, our hearts are often where the food is.

A Taste of Home received an abundance of well wishes, customers sharing that they’ll attempt to make their own treats in the bakery’s absence and notes of joy on A Taste of Home’s welcomed return.

You can support their local landing via their social media.
