The dedicated inspectorate team of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA took on the 5km Sanlam Peace Run this past Saturday to raise critical funds in their relentless fight to protect those who cannot speak for themselves.

Cape Town, South Africa (21 October 2024) – On the crisp Saturday morning of 19 October, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA team of dedicated inspectors laced up their running shoes and took on the 5km Sanlam Peace Run.

With every stride, they carried the weight of countless animals who have suffered, those still waiting for rescue, and those who have found comfort in their care.

Led by Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse, the team’s efforts were a powerful statement against animal cruelty.

Thanks to the incredible support of those who generously ploughed into the fundraising initiative, Cape of Good Hope SPCA was able to raise 50% of their R100,000 goal!

“This race was more than just a run. It was a statement—we will never stop fighting against animal cruelty.

“Your donations keep our inspectors on the road, rescuing animals from abuse and neglect. They provide medical care, food, shelter, and love to animals who have known nothing but pain,” the organisation said.

To all those who contributed, cheered and stood in solidarity with the runners in the fight against cruelty, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA thanks you!

“Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we are unstoppable. Together, we are their voice.”

But their mission is far from over. There’s still time to donate and help them reach their ultimate goal!

Every rand you give makes a difference in an animal’s life. Visit the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s GivenGain page to make a donation.

Like many of us, Liezel van der Westhuizen has experienced setbacks, moments when her confidence wavered and her insecurities were too loud to bear. She shared a glimpse into her lows and how resilience has propelled her to success.

Cape Town, South Africa (18 October 2024) – It may be hard to imagine, but just like many of us, South African keynote speaker and media personality Liezel van der Westhuizen has had her fair share of challenges in life, knocking her confidence and halting her momentum.

We often place public figures on a glamorous pedestal, forgetting that they, too, experience difficulties while navigating this turbulent journey called life.

In a recent post, Liezel bravely opened up about how experiencing negative media attention and hurtful comments from those she trusted tested her resolve, but she refused to be defeated.

“I had to remind myself that I am enough and I am winning,” she wrote.

Liezel further shared her insights into the power of resilience and how it was the key ingredient to her success despite feelings of wanting to throw in the towel.

Insecurities about her height and appearance were also a huge stumbling block that took a long time to overcome.

“I’m a tower of power, enthusiasm, experience, and resilience now…but it hasn’t always been this way. Getting teased about my height in my formative years, really left a mark.

“My hair, my way of dressing, how I speak, and how I stand, have been broken down and critiqued until I felt smaller than an ant.”

Despite wanting to crawl into a hole and disappear, Liezel chose to stand tall and continue to put herself out there.

“Resilience, in people, refuses to be extinguished. It pushed me to put myself out there – baby steps first, but eventually striding with confidence.”

Having emerged stronger on the other side, Liezel encourages South Africans to see setbacks as essential for growth. And that by learning, adapting, and soaring, they can truly thrive.

“Never lose sight of who you are and what makes you unique. Let resilience be your guiding light, navigating you through challenges,” Liezel encourages.

The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) Titans clinched a double medal win at the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association competition, a victory that is a testament to their athletic prowess and a reflection of their unwavering spirit.

Cape Town, South Africa (17 October 2024) – Months of gruelling training and countless hours of practice proved the winning formula for the dedicated CPUT Cheerleaders, the Titans!

With coordinated pom-pom cheers and perfectly synchronised routines, the team emerged as shining stars after securing gold and silver medals at the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association competition, held at the University of Cape Town.

The Titans competed in three categories and won gold in the Tertiary Cheer Pom section and Silver in the Tertiary Cheer Hip-Hop Doubles section.

The cheerleaders honed their skills under the watchful eye of their coach, Tumisang Matlala, who ensured that each dancer poured their heart and soul into their routines, their passion evident in every leap, twist, and turn.

Matlala said the team had spent weeks preparing for each competition and was committed to pushing themselves. This involved regular rehearsal sessions, conditioning, and perfecting their choreography.

“The Tertiary Cheer Pom Section consists of 11 talented dancers, all of whom have been working incredibly hard leading up to the competition”.

“I am absolutely thrilled and beyond proud! Winning gold is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion that each dancer put into their routines. This victory is truly a team effort, and it’s an incredible feeling to see them reach this level,” Matlala said.

In the Tertiary Cheer Hip-Hop Doubles section, the exceptionally talented Liyakhanya Matika and Lithemba Buqa were awarded a silver medal for their incredible dance routine, which boasted energy and precision.

Matlala said all the athletes were overjoyed and truly proud of their achievements.

“It is an incredible validation of all the sacrifices they’ve made along the way. This recognition means the world to them, and I am sure they only plan on going up from here.”

Cherice Mangiagalli, Student Development Officer for Sport, Arts and Culture, congratulated the CPUT Titans on their excellent results.

“Their hard work and dedication proved they were on par with various cheerleading teams across South Africa. As first-time competitors, they stepped up to the requirements and claimed their first and second place without any doubt. I am exceptionally proud of the team and look forward to future competitions.”

As 60 eager mothers and their little ones gathered at Isivivana Centre in Khayelitsha, the magic of storytelling was brought to life during a fun and educational event by Nal’ibali and Embrace the Movement for Mothers.

Khayelitsha, South Africa (16 October 2024) – In an enriching effort to nurture bonds through love, books and play,  Nali’bali hosted a fun-filled Moms and Tots event.

Nal’ibali, a beacon of literacy and storytelling, joined forces with Embrace the Movement for Mothers, a social movement that celebrates the power of motherhood, and hosted the magical event which also sought to embrace their mother tongue.

Together, they created a space where mothers and their young children could bond, learn, and grow.

The Isivivana Centre in Khayelitsha, Cape Town was transformed into a world of wonder, filled with eager little minds and hearts.

Attendees got to enthral themselves in the magic of fictional stories, sparking their imaginations through the experiences of some of their favourite characters.

The captivating stories were brought to life by the enthusiastic Nal’ibali Story-Sparkers and Zazi Show’s Bongo Peteni known by toddlers as Sis’Bongo.

It was colourful, it was fun-filled! But beyond the joy and entertainment, this event was a profound celebration of language, culture, and the power of storytelling.

Despite their crucial role in ensuring the safety of vehicles in parking lots, many carguards receive little to nothing for their honest work. A small tip can go a long way in improving their lives, many of whom have to endure long hours under challenging conditions.

South Africa (15 October 2024) – We see them nearly every day, whether we’re rushing to the store to stock up on weekly groceries or heading to the mall for a weekend outing with family and friends. They’re always in the parking lot, ready to help you manoeuvre into a tight parking space or lend a hand with your trolley.

Car guards are the unsung heroes of our parking lots, tirelessly protecting our vehicles. Despite placing our trust in their care, we often overlook the challenges they face.

A Good Things Guy reader recently shared how she was appalled to see about 30 cars leaving a Cape Town shopping centre with only about four drivers tipping the local car guard. This is despite him having helped them with their trolleys and parking.

Upon having a word with the kind man, she came to learn that was a typical day’s work for him. He also isn’t paid a salary by the shopping centre and therefore relies solely on the tips of shoppers to get by.

The woman also discovered that he’d tried to find another job, but as a foreigner, it was difficult for him to secure work.

Much like this car guard, this is a disheartening reality for hundreds if not thousands of car guards across the country.

According to a BusinessTech survey that had 4,911 respondents, just under half (43%) indicated that they tip around R5. Just over a quarter (26%) indicated that they tip R2, while 10% of the participants indicated that they tip R10 or more.

Now, this is not to make anyone feel bad. But can you imagine having to survive on such small change, nevertheless supporting a family?

These relentless men and women wake up every morning with the hope that they will make just enough to make ends meet.

Hopefully, this can serve as some food for thought and a little nudge to spare a few extra rands to give to the man or woman in your rearview mirror.

Your generosity could provide them with an extra loaf of bread, some money for their child’s school shoes, or just a sandwich to help them get through a long (and, at most times, thankless) day’s work under the gruelling sun or harsh winds while they watch over your precious car.

Looking to conquer more than just the ocean, a group of swimmers will plunge into compassion from Robben Island to Big Bay in support of vulnerable children.

Cape Town, South Africa (15 October 2024) – Twelve brave and determined swimmers from the Geriatrics Water Polo Club will take on the chilly Atlantic Ocean to swim from Robben Island to Big Bay to raise funds for the Child Protection Project at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

Their goal and motivation: to raise at least R5,000 through generous sponsorships and support.

According to the Donor Relations Manager for Legacy and Community Fundraising, Pauline Solomons, the Children’s Hospital Trust has proudly supported the hospital’s key needs for 30 years, and 100% of all donations from this event will go directly to the Child Protection Project.

“This vital initiative helps safeguard vulnerable children from abuse, neglect, and violence, providing them with early intervention and care,” Solomons explains.

In South Africa, a disheartening statistic reveals that one in three children will experience violence or maltreatment before the age of 18.

The lasting effects of such trauma can be devastating, often leading to mental health challenges and substance abuse later in life.

Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital serves as a lifeline for these children, but it faces challenges in providing comprehensive care as not all staff have the specialised training needed to address child protection issues comprehensively.

Solomons shared that the Child Protection Project is working to bridge this gap by providing a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to caring for abused and neglected children.

Recent upgrades to the hospital have created a more nurturing and safer environment, but continued training is essential to equip medical professionals and child protection authorities with the skills needed to identify and respond to suspected cases of abuse.

“We are deeply grateful to Ray McCallum and the Geriatrics Water Polo Club for their compassion and commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of these children and their families,” thanks Solomons.

To make a contribution or for more information, contact Pauline at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital here.

Paedspal, a non-profit organisation, is a lifeline for children facing serious illnesses. Their dedicated team provides paediatric palliative care, offering comfort and support to both the children and their families.

Cape Town, South Africa (11 October 2024) – Children deserve to be carefree, play at their heart’s content, grow, develop and receive love and care in all its abundance.

It’s heartbreaking when these precious little beings are unable to enjoy these simple pleasures due to unforeseen and undeserved illnesses.

Seeking to provide much-needed care and relief to these innocent children unfairly robbed of their health and joy, is Paedspal, a non-profit organisation focusing on palliative care for children.

Paedspal is committed to helping children with serious health-related suffering find relief, supporting their families and empowering healthcare practitioners to provide holistic palliative care.

Paedspal was established in 2016 in response to the desperate need for palliative care services for children with non-curable illnesses.

With a focus on holistic care that addresses physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, Paedspal has become a beacon of hope for thousands of families.

Understanding Paediatric Palliative Care

Paediatric palliative care is a specialised form of medical support for children coping with serious illnesses. It aims to alleviate symptoms and reduce the stress associated with the illness, ultimately enhancing the quality of life for both the child and their family.

Paedspal has rapidly grown to respond to the urgent needs of thousands of children who require this care but aren’t able to access it due to its specialist nature.

According to their website, Paedspal provides over 4,000 palliative care consultations to children and their families every year on average.

With a staff of 16, Paedspal is the largest specialist palliative care organisation in the country dedicated to children.

“Cancer accounts for around 4% of children needing palliative care, with premature birth and birth trauma and congenital malformations providing the highest need globally (33.9%) alongside HIV disease (29.6%),” Paedspal shared in a post.

What Paedspal does

Paedspal operates in the Western Cape and sees children both in public and private hospitals, as well as in its own outpatient clinic.

The outpatient clinic operates four times a week from its offices situated at the Stonefountain Terrace building.

Two of these clinics are full multidisciplinary clinics (both medical and psychosocial teams), and the other two provide additional psychosocial support.

Outreach is also provided to select institutions and communities.

Paedspal also provides education and training in PPC and is involved in policy work provincially and nationally.

Hats On for Children’s Palliative Care

The organisation relies solely on funding from its committed donors and supporters. As part of its fundraising efforts, Paedspal has partnered with six schools to participate in the fun Hats On for Children’s Palliative Care (#HatsOn4CPC) global campaign on Friday, 11 October.

“We’re looking forward to our annual #HatsOn4CPC day! It’s a time of fun and laughs as you wear hats of all kinds!

“You can have a ‘best hat’ competition! Send us your photos and tag us. We want to see those hats! You are taking part in an international event!”

To be part of the fundraising festivities or to learn more about Paedspal, email admin@paedspal.org.za or call 021 200 5873.

If you’ve ever wondered how deep a mother’s love and resilience runs, Sibongile’s story is a great place to start. Faced with raising a child with osteogenesis imperfecta, she not only overcame challenges in finding adequate support, but she also drew inner strength from her hardships.

Cape Town, South Africa (09 October 2024) – The prospect of becoming a mother and the thrill of welcoming a new life into the world is an indescribable experience.

However, when that little life arrives with unexpected challenges, it can be a deeply daunting adjustment. Something that Sibongile knows all too well.

The resilient mother to a precious little girl named Leona chose to turn the anxiety of raising a child with osteogenesis imperfecta into strength and courage.

Osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as brittle bone disease, is a genetic or heritable disease in which bones fracture (break) easily, often with no obvious cause or minimal injury.

According to The Chaeli Campaign, Sibongile experienced challenges in caring for Leona, including a long search for support. However, she grew stronger and found hope.

“My perspective of life changed. I became a strong, bold, and courageous woman,” she reflects.

Thanks to The Chaeli Campaign, Leona received a wheelchair, giving her the freedom to attend check-ups and participate in family activities.

Sibongile continues to pay this forward by facilitating workshops and encouraging people with disabilities to live full, active lives.

“My advice to other parents is to advocate for your child and surround yourself with supportive communities.”

Her inspiring story and those of many other parents of children with disabilities have been shared in the Chaeli Campaign’s book, Champions of Inclusion.

The book, created for the organisation’s 20th birthday, hopes to inspire individuals to embrace inclusivity and celebrate the unique qualities of every person.
