The dedicated inspectorate team of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA took on the 5km Sanlam Peace Run this past Saturday to raise critical funds in their relentless fight to protect those who cannot speak for themselves.

Cape Town, South Africa (21 October 2024) – On the crisp Saturday morning of 19 October, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA team of dedicated inspectors laced up their running shoes and took on the 5km Sanlam Peace Run.

With every stride, they carried the weight of countless animals who have suffered, those still waiting for rescue, and those who have found comfort in their care.

Led by Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse, the team’s efforts were a powerful statement against animal cruelty.

Thanks to the incredible support of those who generously ploughed into the fundraising initiative, Cape of Good Hope SPCA was able to raise 50% of their R100,000 goal!

“This race was more than just a run. It was a statement—we will never stop fighting against animal cruelty.

“Your donations keep our inspectors on the road, rescuing animals from abuse and neglect. They provide medical care, food, shelter, and love to animals who have known nothing but pain,” the organisation said.

To all those who contributed, cheered and stood in solidarity with the runners in the fight against cruelty, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA thanks you!

“Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we are unstoppable. Together, we are their voice.”

But their mission is far from over. There’s still time to donate and help them reach their ultimate goal!

Every rand you give makes a difference in an animal’s life. Visit the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s GivenGain page to make a donation.

After suffering a nasty kick from a zebra, a tiny injured Nyala calf named Rimmy was welcomed to the Friends of Free Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre, where he began his journey of recovery with much care and attention.

Midrand, South Africa (14 October 2024)Friends of Free Wildlife recently welcomed their first and most adorable antelope patient, with big ears, dark eyes, and endearingly long, wobbly legs.

The team of wildlife heroes was thrilled to welcome a beautiful male Nyala calf, named “Rimmy”, to occupy one of the stalls in the facility’s brand-new mammal enclosure.

According to the wildlife rehabilitation centre, Rimmy started life off on the wrong foot when he was kicked by a zebra at the lodge where he was born.

He unfortunately sustained a fracture to the radius on his left front leg and was meticulously treated by Dr Jean at Bryanston Avian, Exotic and Small Animal Clinic (BAESAC).

The dedicated team at Friends of Free Wildlife, along with the expertise of veterinarians at Onderstepoort Wildlife Clinic, worked tirelessly to mend Rimmy’s broken bones and restore his mobility.

Thankfully, it wasn’t long until Rimmy was back on his feet sporting a fancy purple bandage covering a contraption known as an ‘external ring fixator’.

“The surgeon is very happy with his progress and the fixator and bandages have now been removed.

“We are extremely fortunate and most grateful to one of our volunteers, Janet, who sprung into action and within minutes secured sponsorship from RIMKEM for the entire procedure,” said Lauren Haupt of Friends of Free Wildlife.

Rimmy is well on the road to recovery. Special thanks go to the wonderful vets at Onderstepoort and the formidable animal specialists Claudius and Meg, who have been keeping the little calf comfortable, fed and happy from morning to night.

Baby ellie Phabeni is celebrating small victories after his rescue at the end of November. Now settling into his new herd nicely, he’s already gained weight and has a new playmate:

Hoedspruit, South Africa (09 January 2024) — Orphaned baby ellie Phabeni has made significant progress since his rescue in late November. As the young elephant navigates his youth guided by the heroes of HERD (Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development), he is also celebrating small victories. Two of the most important? A healthy weight and a new playmate.

In case you missed it, Phabeni was initially found in an unusual setting—the garden of a woman who lived near the Kruger National Park. After she realised that the little elephant in the garden appeared to be completely on his own, she set in motion all the stops to get Phabeni the help he needed; saving his life in the process from those who thought it better to put him down.

Phabeni soon found himself in his new home under the careful care of Dr Rogers, the all-star carers at HERD and Lammie the sheep. In less than two months, the ellie has made fantastic progress.

One of the biggest small victories in Phabeni’s progress is his weight gain. In the world of rescues (especially for orphaned wildlife) weight gain is hugely important as it signifies their health is on track. Take Khanyisa’s weight milestone of a tonne, or Mpho the rhino’s great growth.

Described as a feisty young bull, Phabeni didn’t make the journey to weight gain the easiest with his milk feeds. But, as the HERD team shares, “no one ever said parenting was easy.” Like a stubborn toddler, after enough time, Phabeni’s cooperation improved. His weight is now up and sitting at 136 kg.

Above and beyond a little more junk in his trunk, Phabeni also has a new playmate and companion to share his youth with.

While Lammie the sheep has served HERD well, the nurse’s more mature years are on the horizon. As such, Spotty the Sheep has been brought on board as Phabeni’s new nursery-mate, Grace buddy and fellow garden explorer.

Weight gain and a new buddy in the same era? Life continues to look up for Phabeni, and we’re here for every part of it.

Saturday saw back-to-back rescues for the NSRI Gqeberha, where a successful beached bottlenose dolphin rescue kickstarted the day before it ended on another heroic high with a young man saved from drowning!

Gqeberha, South Africa (16 October 2023) — It was a busy Saturday for the NSRI Gqeberha with back-to-back rescues spanning different species and predicaments. The first saw a dolphin rescue underway after the male bottlenose was found beached, while the second saw a young man believed to have been caught in a rip current’s wrath.

The bottlenose dolphin had been discovered in a shallow surf by members of the public in Sardinia Bay; alive and healthy, but not where any dolphin should spend their Saturday.

Shortly after his discovery, the NSRI was activated to assist the dolphin rescue alongside Bayworld staff and marine scientists for the big un-beaching. Rallying their rescue craft, NSRI rescue members were soon hot on the dolphin’s tail and help was on the way.

Upon their arrival, the bottlenose was fortunately found to be in good health. Soon, he was secured into a special marine animal stretcher before being loaded into another vehicle to be transported to a rescue station, whilst in the care of marine professionals and rescuers.

It was discovered that this dolphin may have had a scuffle with a shark which caused a few minor and superficial injuries. But, after a few more assessments he got the green light to set out into the big blue as the teams transported him 5 nautical miles offshore before release into Algoa Bay.

Seas were rough and the rescue was deemed complex, but the strong dolphin was able to swim away after being released, surfacing only once for a breath.

A Bayworld marine scientist indicates with (cautious optimism) that the dolphin will survive.

But, the NSRI Gqeberha’s work for the day wasn’t quite finished yet.

Upon returning to the NSRI Gqueberha rescue station later on, the teams were alerted to a drowning in progress.

Here, members of the public played a big role in helping the NSRI’s rescue craft toward the 23-year-old local man who found himself in the breaking surf line.

The NSRI rescue craft raced to the rescue, negotiating breaking waves to reach him. After being assessed by paramedics he was deemed good to go back to Hobie Beach, with the NSRI believing that strong rip currents had prevented him from getting back to shore initially.
