The dedicated inspectorate team of the Cape of Good Hope SPCA took on the 5km Sanlam Peace Run this past Saturday to raise critical funds in their relentless fight to protect those who cannot speak for themselves.

Cape Town, South Africa (21 October 2024) – On the crisp Saturday morning of 19 October, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA team of dedicated inspectors laced up their running shoes and took on the 5km Sanlam Peace Run.

With every stride, they carried the weight of countless animals who have suffered, those still waiting for rescue, and those who have found comfort in their care.

Led by Chief Inspector Jaco Pieterse, the team’s efforts were a powerful statement against animal cruelty.

Thanks to the incredible support of those who generously ploughed into the fundraising initiative, Cape of Good Hope SPCA was able to raise 50% of their R100,000 goal!

“This race was more than just a run. It was a statement—we will never stop fighting against animal cruelty.

“Your donations keep our inspectors on the road, rescuing animals from abuse and neglect. They provide medical care, food, shelter, and love to animals who have known nothing but pain,” the organisation said.

To all those who contributed, cheered and stood in solidarity with the runners in the fight against cruelty, the Cape of Good Hope SPCA thanks you!

“Thank you for being part of this journey. Together, we are unstoppable. Together, we are their voice.”

But their mission is far from over. There’s still time to donate and help them reach their ultimate goal!

Every rand you give makes a difference in an animal’s life. Visit the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s GivenGain page to make a donation.

It’s almost time for dog lovers in Cape Town to enjoy a day in ‘pawradise’ as Woefie Wandel 2024 approaches to support the Cape of Good Hope SPCA! From walks with fellow dog lovers to an art station just for pooches, food stalls and even pet-friendly photo booths, here’s what’s on the cards:

Green Point, South Africa (20 October 2024) — If a day spent out at a park surrounded by dogs, greenery and fellow dog lovers is your idea of paradise (or should we say, pawradise), then the 2024 Woefie Wandel might just be the next thing you add to your social calendar with immediate effect.

On the one paw, the Woefie Wandel is a big fundraising opportunity for the Cape of Good Hope SPCA whose tireless work for the betterment of Cape animals makes a massive difference every week. On the other, it’s a wagging and wonderful way to connect with animal lovers while letting your dog enjoy a range of pooch-friendly activities!

On the cards for the day set to be hosted at the ever-tranquil Green Point Park are:

  • Walkies—two walks, one 1.2km and a 1.9km
  • Food Stalls—because what’s a walk without a treat to look forward to?
  • Art for Pooches—Yes, your dog has the go-ahead to unleash its inner Pawcasso!
  • A pet-friendly Photobooth
  • Contests: There will be contests for the Best lookalike dog, the happiest dog and more
  • A Pet Pop-up Shop
  • A Mobile Clinic—Get those rabies vaccinations and microchipping out of the way on the day!
  • A Mini Funfair—So that your human kids can also let their hair down

Last year, Woefie Wandel helped the Cape of Good Hope SPCA raise R50,000 thanks to 600 participants and the many, many four-legged friends present. And if those numbers are anything to go by, hopes are higher than your dog’s leap to catch a frisbee that 2024 will have a marvellous impact.

Details

  • When: Sunday, 17 November; gates open at 8 am
  • Where: Green Point Park, Cape Town
  • Tickets: You can grab a spot for yourself, your dogs and your friend who just loves being around dogs here.

15 Cape fur seals were recently rescued from dry dock havoc thanks to the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Marine Wildlife Management Programme and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA!

Cape Town, South Africa (13 October 2024) — A headcount of 15 Cape fur seals were found huddled together with no way out inside a Robinson Dry Dock late last month before a speedy seal rescue ensued.

The Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation’s Marine Wildlife Management Programme (MWMP) team received word of the ordeal, but had no idea it was quite so many seals until they arrived.

For context, dry docks are not a friend to marine creatures. When docks are drained (generally for maintenance of a boat) marine creatures that swam in before the drainage can get stranded. The walls are very high and there isn’t a way back to the water unless you trek up the stairs which, in a seal’s case, isn’t exactly an easy stroll, no less something they would know to do.

At the scene, the group of 15 were spotted with one older seal seemingly guarding the little colony that included youngsters. The Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation explains that these seals had followed a shoal of mullet to the dock before it was drained.

Seasoned seal hero Martine Viljoen knew that this was not a task that the MWMP squad could tackle alone following her assessment of the situation and back up was needed!

The Cape of Good Hope SPCA was more than happy to assist and sent their wildlife specialists Jon Friedman, Trevor Rodney and Rudi Philander to help the MWMP’s Martine, Claire Taylor, Ayanda Cimani, Abdullah Abrahams, Saliegh Adams, Louis Du Buisson and Ayrton King.

With many experts on board, it was time to get down to business.

An important part of the rescue was ensuring that the seals’ stress levels were kept to a minimum; no small ask for the colony who were already rightfully distressed about their situation. A distressed animal (especially the likes of a Cape fur seal who can get quite defensive upon feeling threatened) is much harder to rescue.

The team began prompting the seals to move outward into the open part of the dry dock so that they could use special poles to hoof them (safely) up the stairs. Once they were up to the top, they could make their way to another area and dive back into the ocean.

The problem was that the seals were getting pretty stressed as more members of their group started ‘disappearing’. So, a new plan had to be devised; one that involved securing the seals in a better way thanks to a specially designed net and a lot of hard work.

The efforts took many hours, a lot of dedication and loads of care and consideration. But ultimately, it was a seal success.

Martine shares that the SPCA Wildlife’s help was imperative to the day’s happy ending.

“I am immensely proud of the dedication and skill shown by the team involved, which allowed us to achieve the best possible outcome for the day without mishap,” she praised.
