Godwin, a dedicated employee at a restaurant in Stellenbosch, had never imagined that his ordinary workday would turn into an extraordinary one when a customer unexpectedly blessed him with a most generous tip!

Stellenbosch, South Africa (18 October 2024) – Tipping etiquette in South Africa remains a topic of debate, with opinions ranging from a standard 10% to a more generous amount based on the quality of service.

Wherever you fall on the spectrum, it is important to remember that a small gesture of appreciation can make a world of difference in the lives of the hardworking men and women who serve us with smiles.

In a heartwarming reminder of the life-changing power of kindness that still exists in the nooks and crannies of our country, one lucky waiter was recently surprised with a generous tip of R10,000 from a customer.

Godwin, who has been a waiter at The Thirsty Scarecrow for over a year could have never imagined that getting up for his work shift on Tuesday, 15 October would be met with such generosity.

The restaurant’s Kelly Zetler described Godwin as an absolute star.

“His dedication, positive attitude, and ability to connect with our guests make him an invaluable part of our family.

“Godwin consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that every customer has a memorable experience, and his warm, genuine nature is something that everyone appreciates.”

The generous R10,000 tip Godwin received has been a huge blessing for him and those who know him can attest that it will be put to good use and make a big difference in his life.

“The act of kindness from our customer has been a reminder to all of us about the incredible goodwill that exists in the world.

“We are thrilled to see Godwin’s hard work and fantastic service recognised in such a special way,” Kelly added.

Reverend Barry Fourie, a dedicated servant of the Lord throughout his life, now faces a devastating health crisis. His daughter, Minki, has set up a fundraising campaign to help cover the cost of cancer treatment, which is essential for his survival.

Eastern Cape, South Africa (23 September 2024) – Diagnosed with a rare type of cancer that requires treatment that is financially out of reach, the life of a devoted servant of the Lord, Reverend Barry Fourie’s life hangs in the balance.

Fourie and his family learned of his condition earlier this year when he had travelled to Stellenbosch to marry his daughter Minki and her husband, Leonard.

“Upon arrival, we noticed he wasn’t well. After intensive tests, scans and a huge operation to remove a tumour (15 x 10 x 10cm) he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive cancer, called, Myofibroblastic Sarcoma.

“After more intensive tests and consultations with his oncologist and medical team, a specialised targeted therapy treatment has been recommended called immunotherapy,” Minki shares.

Immunotherapy is a groundbreaking treatment that uses a person’s own immune system to fight cancer, and it can help Minki’s father’s body fight the aggressive disease.

“It’s his best chance at survival, but it comes with a hefty price tag. Importantly the tests confirmed that he is a 100% match candidate for immunotherapy, indicating a high likelihood of success!”

Reverend Fourie needs to receive 18 bags of immunotherapy, each bag costs R80,000, totalling R1,440,000 – a devastating financial burden for the Fourie family.

Minki has set up a Back-a-Buddy page to help raise funds for the treatment. She further explained that a new sarcoma had been identified on her father’s latest CT scan, two months post-operation.

Despite lifelong contributions to a reputable South African Medical aid company, on a good plan, they refused to cover this life-saving treatment.

“We’re continuing to appeal this decision, but we can’t afford to wait as the cancer grows. Our initial goal as suggested by his oncologist is to fund four bags (R320,000) for the first round of treatment, after which we will reassess progress.”

A disheartened Minki expressed feeling like the healthcare system is broken, questioning how lifesaving treatment could be so expensive and out of reach of most people?

Now at 73, Fourie has dedicated most of his life to serving the community and spreading the Gospel and has shown immense compassion and love to everyone he has met.

Minki is reaching out for support in the form of prayers and financial contributions for her dad.

“The road ahead is uncertain, but with your help, we can fight for his life.”

Six Stellenbosch University students have scooped coveted spots after they beat out hundreds of applicants to be selected for the Africa United Youth Orchestra, where they will perform at Carnegie Hall for World Orchestra Week!

Stellenbosch, South Africa (26 July 2024) — Six Stellenbosch University students have scooped coveted spots as they join the Africa United Youth Orchestra (AUYO); a golden ticket to perform at Carnegie Hall.

Stellenbosch University’s Department of Music (SU Konservatorium) has announced that students Gilah Kellner (Concertmaster), Catherine Stiff (Associate Concertmaster), Gretna Heynike (Violin 1), Carina Naudé (Violin 1), Ricardo Hiniker (Violin 2) and Courtney Sampson on the French Horn have all made them very proud with their selection.

Said selection saw over 200 applicants make a beeline for the opportunity, with applicants hailing from several African countries, including Nigeria, Kenya, the DRC and Mozambique.

“This achievement not only highlights the students’ exceptional skills but also brings significant recognition to the university on an international stage,” praises Dr Suzanne Martens, a Senior Lecturer in violin and chamber music and Stellenbosch University.

American conductor William Eddins will lead the African Youth Orchestra’s performance as part of Carnegie Hall’s World Orchestra Week (WOW)—a prestigious event and summer festival that unites the top calibre of young musicians from all over the world.

The performance will take place on 3 August, where the AUYO is part of a programme including the National Children’s Symphony of Venezuela, the Beijing Youth Symphony Orchestra, the European Union Youth Orchestra and the Afghan Youth Orchestra.

In something of a prelude to Carnegie Hall, the AUYO will perform on 28 July at UNISA in Pretoria. Here, acclaimed South African composers and voices will also be featured.

A Stellies Lecturer embarked on an incredible ‘600km in 6 days’ cycle—all to alleviate the financial burdens of her chemistry students:

Western Cape, South Africa (04 April 2024) — Stellenbosch University lecturer Dr Marietjie Lutz has undertaken a big cycle for a cause! Driven by the Stellies lecturer and a dream to enact tangible change in her students’ lives, Dr Lutz signed up for a massive bike tour of 600 kilometres from George to Stellenbosch in a time wrap of just six days.

Dubbed ‘Wheels of Opportunity’ by Stellenbosch University, the initiative is all to help finance her students in their educational pursuits!

As a lecturer of first-year chemistry students, Dr Lutz knows first-hand the financial challenges her students face en route to their dreams. No matter their potential or brilliance, financial obstacles can easily dull even the brightest sparks.

Despite the resilience of many students in these situations, a little help and effort always goes a long way—which is exactly why lecturers and students (like the incredible Sarah Camp who also cycled to help her fellow peers) go such great lengths for the cause.

However, it was one student in particular who inspired Dr Lutz’s ‘Wheels of Opportunity’ initiative.

“The student was on the brink of homelessness and food insecurity. Despite facing immense financial stress, this determined student excelled academically, demonstrating resilience and determination,” shares Dr Lutz.

As of 29 March, the Stellies lecturer decided to take the Easter Weekend as the perfect opportunity to embark on a pursuit with her students’ challenges in mind (she has before used her love of long-distance cycling to empower students, including the Cape Epic!)

Adding the extra heartwarming feels of this story, the Stellies lecturer was not alone on the recent long road to Stellenbosch, thanks to her husband and four children who hit the road alongside her. According to Dr Lutz, this was part of the family’s travel theme—gratitude.

Through demanding roads through Oudtshoorn all the way to Greyton, yesterday, the family of cyclists completed their final kilometres.

“We had the best support one could dream of…so many messages and financial contributions from family and many, many friends and colleagues,” Dr Lutz shared.

In total, all the individual GivenGain campaigns have rallied R34,050 of the R60,000.

You can toss in some support here!

Maybe the internet needed to be reminded that life isn’t always so serious, or maybe the energy of these students was just infectiously joyful. Whatever the main reason, a singing prank in a Stellenbosch lecture hall has gone beyond viral with almost 30 million views!

Stellenbosch, South Africa (01 March 2024)—Being a university student means living in the weird space between serious adulthood and laidback youth. Some days, it feels like your whole life is dependent on one assignment. Other days, you might be at the height of feeling young and invincible. But fun should lie in the mix of it all, as should stepping outside of your comfort zone, which is exactly what students at Stellenbosch University got up to thanks to a singing prank that skyrocketed past virality at 28.4 million views and 3.9 million likes.

Maybe the internet needed to be reminded that life isn’t always so serious, or maybe the energy of these students was just so unanimously and infectiously joyful. Whatever the exact reason, a clip of students giving their lecture a High School Musical twist has captured social media users after this rendition of ‘We Are Young’ made people smile.

Watch: Singing Prank in Stellies Unites Students

@timmorrel Ending was worth it🥰 #university #lectures #college #CapCut ♬ original sound – Tim

Shared by TikTok creator Tim Morrel, the clip captured bravery, fun and unity through doing something you have to have a lot of guts to do. Students’ mental health at tertiary levels is known to be a cause for concern; with anxiety and depression sadly impacting so many young people’s journeys through higher education. What was awesome about the clip was not just the singing and joy, but that the whole cohort of students joined in; which means even the anxious, those who feel alone, and those who never considered that they could make others smile simply through a little silliness.

Yes lecture halls are a place of learning, but they should also be a place where students can unite and even learn a few lessons outside of the curriculum—like this lesson in being bold!

Artist Patrick Bongoy’s latest exhibition hopes to spark action in the fight to restore our planet. Made from discarded materials, his art is here to give us a different perspective on what is possible together:

Stellenbosch, South Africa (15 February 2024) – Our planet is facing great stress. We see it in the chaotic weather events, resource depletion and degradation of natural wonders. The situation is serious, but it does not come without hope—as long a collective will to better what we have ruined is alive. This is the prevailing narrative behind artist Patrick Bongoy’s work and his latest exhibition, Ebbing, set to come to Stellenbosch.

For Patrick, the challenges facing humanity are not unlike waves repeatedly crashing onto the shore. This idea of movement is linked to action; action Patrick hopes his art will spark.

“In my understanding as an artist, in my understanding of the world, Earth is a blank canvas that has been given to human beings to imagine and to create – and to make it better for us to live on,” the artist says.

“We’ve been given the power to shape this world and protect it…but we’ve created a monster. It’s dangerous and we don’t know what to do with it.”

In his latest exhibition, Patrick’s message of hope capitalises on the idea of action through recreation. By turning traditionally discarded materials into unique creations, the artist gives us a visual expression of a new way at looking at our relationship with waste.

“I use the material, translated into whatever I create, as a language of hope and movement,” he says. By making art from waste, balance and harmony in this world find their place—something the artist hopes those who see his exhibition will be encouraged to reflect on.

“I want people to see the beauty and new life that translates out of this dead material,” he explains.

Technically impressive and visually engaging, Bongoy’s art invites the viewer to contemplate forgotten dreams and stolen futures – as with the wall-to-wall canvas of silhouetted children – but not without a pinch of hope.

Inspired by the people and organisations who upcycle materials like plastic into concrete and furniture, Patrick believes the capacity for momentum is within us when we choose to work together.

In his words “There are possibilities and solutions. It’s just a matter of effort, energy and consciousness – and the collective will to change.”

Ebbing will be free to the public until 12 May at Spier Wine Farm’s Old Wine Cellar. Open daily from 9am-5pm.

A Stellies scientist and University Professor has made South Africa proud after making it onto a coveted list in academia that honours researchers whose work has been cited the most in the world!

Global (12 January 2024) — Stellies Scientist and Professor David Richardson is being celebrated for something pretty huge in the academic community.

Prof Richardson (who is part of Stellenbosch University’s Department of Botany and Zoology) was named on the global ‘Name Dropping List’ —the Clarivate list! This list names and fames researchers who are highly cited in their fields of influence, making Prof Richardson one of only ten people from South African institutions to be featured.

Prof Richardson now comfortably wears the title of one of the world’s most cited and respected researchers. This, for his contributions to ecology and the environment (2014-2021) and the cross-field category (from 2022-2023).

According to Stellenbosch University:

“The highly anticipated list identifies scientists and social scientists who produced multiple papers ranking in the top 1% by citations for their field and year of publication in the Web of Science over the past decade, demonstrating significant research influence among their pears.”

All in all, over 7000 researchers from 67 countries across 20 fields made the list.

For the Stellies scientist and professor, the nod is one of magnitude because it indicates the influence of one’s work. For the Dean of the Faculty of Science, it is a proud moment, both for the recognition it gives to Prof Richardson’s time and effort, as well as the spotlight it shines on his work with managing invasive species.

Marvellous med student Sarah Camp has completed her 1000km strong cycle, giving marathon racers a run for their money. But, her cycle had a different reward in mind; one that has now secured much-needed funds for students struggling with debt.

South Africa (06 November 2023) — In case you missed it, there’s a new champion cycler on the block whose biggest reward has not been a medal or podium placement. Marvellous medical student Sarah Camp and her bicycle trekked over 1000kms in 10 days from Stellenbosch to Hillcrest, KZN — an effort that could make even the most dedicated marathon racer sweat several times over — all for her fellow Stellenbosch University students struggling with student debt.

Sarah recently completed her personal cycling championship and has raised almost R30 000 in the process (R26 120 at the time of this article’s writing), with every cent set to relieve the immense stress resting on other students’ shoulders via the #Action4Inclusion initiative.

The professor who inspired the med student’s miles, Professor Thuli Madonsela, was one of the first from the University to praise her efforts.

“It was heartwarming when we received news of Sarah’s intention to undertake a cycling pilgrimage in support of our Pilgrimage of Hope, which is an extension of our #Action4Inclusion crowdfunding initiative. I was moved deeply by her generosity of spirt,” Prof Madonsela said.

The Professor furthered that the future doctor’s trek follows in the various footsteps and cycling trails of other heroes like medical professor Prof Karin Baatjes and Vice-Chancellor Prof Wim de Villiers, another doctor.

These professors have both played their part in alleviating student struggles, with Prof de Villiers moving in almost every way possible (from cycling to hiking) to raise funds toward student debt and hunger relief and Prof Baatjes walking her way to R100 000 raised for disadvantaged students.

In total, Sarah completed 1170kms and three provinces with her longest day seeing her traverse 156kms.

When the adventure (and blisters) finally met their end on Saturday, the marvellous med student shared: “It feels surreal to be back home. I can’t believe that I don’t have to climb on a bicycle again tomorrow!”

“We have a beautiful country, and I have feel blessed to have been lucky enough to have seen it by bicycle, and to have made the journey for #Action4Inclusion. I hope that the trip has helped raise awareness and funds for student debt relief, so that more deserving young South Africans can access the education they deserve.”—Sarah Camp.

There are still a few days left to help the goal reach its target of R30 000, and you can find Sarah’s campaign here.

A revolutionary invention straight out of Stellenbosch has travelled to the Bahamas with shark safety in mind. Where shark nets have killed thousands of sharks along with other marine life, the scientifically created ‘kelp forests’ keep these animals safe!

Global (03 November 2023) — Since the 1950s, shark nets have played a dark role in claiming marine lives across the world, from dolphins to sea turtles and of course shark species—a far cry from what shark safety should mean. This has resulted (amongst other worrying factors) in the severe decline of white shark numbers in waters close to home, as discovered by marine biologist Dr Sara Andreotti.

However, in an effort to keep both marine animals and humans safe, marine biologists at Stellenbosch University, led by Dr Andreotti, have done something ground-breaking, thanks to their innovative ‘kelp forest’ biomimicry work designed to protect lives without harmful repercussions.

According to the university, the SharkSafe BarrierTM tech is the only eco-friendly alternative to shark nets.

For Dr Andreotti who is a Stellenbosch University lecturer, researcher and diver, creating kelp forest-inspired barriers are the solution thanks to their safety-focused position as  ‘reef-like havens for local sea life’.

The barriers work by marrying kelp forest elements with magnetic fields, the latter being a force most shark species are sensitive to, due to the electromagnetic receptors on their heads. The kelp forest design, on the other hand, is inspired by natural sea life behaviour; where real kelp forests are something of a hiding place for most sea creatures seeking refuge from predators, according to the researchers.

In simple terms, shark safety is safer now as the sharks are repelled by the magnetic fields instead of trapped, while other marine lives can go about their days as usual and sea-curious humans can explore without harmful impact either.

This concept was developed over 10 years ago, and since then it has been tried and tested throughout South African waters.

Now, it’s making even more waves of change in waters far beyond! The barrier’s use in the Bahamas for one (its first commercial use ever) has been praised after a 30-metre-long barrier along an island bay was installed to strengthen marine conservation efforts.

But, the opportunities to re-manage shark safety are bigger than any one island and will always have a dose of South African brilliance tied to every mission accomplished.

South Africa (31 October 2023) — Between long hours, demanding schedules and pressures that university alumni across the world still have recurring nightmares about, another dose of stress many students carry with them long after they leave their backpacks in the past is debt. Student debt is the dark horse of a brighter future for many young people, and with limited options to overcome it, this dark horse isn’t easily shaken off its relentless trail.

However, when the going gets tough, the tough often makes a plan, and that’s exactly what final year med student Sarah Camp and her trusty bicycle are doing for her fellow students.

Sarah is on a cycling mission that began at Ukwanda Medical Campus in Stellenbosch with plans to conclude in KwaZulu-Natal (some 1500 km away). Each kilometre brings her closer to her goal—lightening the load student debt places on her peers.

“Access to education shouldn’t depend on wealth,” shares Sarah, who has created a crowdfunding campaign that’s already a few thousand rand shy of her ultimate fundraising goal.

The doctor-to-be adds that these funds will be used to help Stellenbosch University undergrads with two kinds of debt: registration and graduation debt under #Action4Inclusion.

#Action4Inclusion is an initiative launched by the Student Representative Council and the university’s Centre for Social Justice led by Prof Thuli Madonsela. Its purpose is to bridge the gaps between financial support and community kindness for struggling students, especially when it comes to debt blocking them from receiving their academic records upon graduation or not being able to register for the next year due to debt.

Having already passed her halfway mark, Sarah continues to cycle her heart out with her last check-in seeing her pass the wildflowers in bloom en route to Cradock.

With only a few days to go until the finish line, anyone inspired to support students through Sarah’s cycle can do so here.
