Nine-year-old Elizabeth Pretorius, a bright-eyed Grade 3 learner from Curro Langebaan, recently made her mark on the world stage at the Biathle World Championships in Egypt.

Port Said, Egypt (21 October 2024) – At only nine years old, Elizabeth Pretorius displayed remarkable skill and determination in the exhilarating sport of biathle (Biathle, also referred to as modern biathlon, is a sport that was derived from modern pentathlon) at the Biathle World Championships in Egypt – proving that age is just a number and that with passion and perseverance, anything is possible!

The Grade 3 learner from Curro Langebaan represented South Africa with great determination as she tackled the waters and the beach track, proving that dynamite does indeed come in small packages.

Despite her young age, Elizabeth faced tough competition from athletes around the globe but refused to crack under pressure.

Over four gruelling days, she competed in individual and team biathle relays, battling through challenging conditions both in the water and on the beach as her races combined sea swimming and beach running. Her determination and resilience were evident in every race.

According to her school, Elizabeth was one of the youngest in her U11 age group. She finished 8th in her team relay and 27th in the Biathle individual races, giving her a world ranking of 36th place!

“Elizabeth, we are so proud of you! Not only your amazing accomplishments but your dedication and fighting spirit. May this be the first of many for you,” Curro Langebaan said.

As Elizabeth continues to grow and develop her skills, we can’t wait to see what she will accomplish in the future!

Stellenbosch, South Africa (18 October 2024) – Tipping etiquette in South Africa remains a topic of debate, with opinions ranging from a standard 10% to a more generous amount based on the quality of service.

Wherever you fall on the spectrum, it is important to remember that a small gesture of appreciation can make a world of difference in the lives of the hardworking men and women who serve us with smiles.

In a heartwarming reminder of the life-changing power of kindness that still exists in the nooks and crannies of our country, one lucky waiter was recently surprised with a generous tip of R10,000 from a customer.

Godwin, who has been a waiter at The Thirsty Scarecrow for over a year could have never imagined that getting up for his work shift on Tuesday, 15 October would be met with such generosity.

The restaurant’s Kelly Zetler described Godwin as an absolute star.

“His dedication, positive attitude, and ability to connect with our guests make him an invaluable part of our family.

“Godwin consistently goes above and beyond to ensure that every customer has a memorable experience, and his warm, genuine nature is something that everyone appreciates.”

The Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) Titans clinched a double medal win at the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association competition, a victory that is a testament to their athletic prowess and a reflection of their unwavering spirit.

Cape Town, South Africa (17 October 2024) – Months of gruelling training and countless hours of practice proved the winning formula for the dedicated CPUT Cheerleaders, the Titans!

With coordinated pom-pom cheers and perfectly synchronised routines, the team emerged as shining stars after securing gold and silver medals at the South African Majorette and Cheerleading Association competition, held at the University of Cape Town.

The Titans competed in three categories and won gold in the Tertiary Cheer Pom section and Silver in the Tertiary Cheer Hip-Hop Doubles section.

The cheerleaders honed their skills under the watchful eye of their coach, Tumisang Matlala, who ensured that each dancer poured their heart and soul into their routines, their passion evident in every leap, twist, and turn.

Matlala said the team had spent weeks preparing for each competition and was committed to pushing themselves. This involved regular rehearsal sessions, conditioning, and perfecting their choreography.

“The Tertiary Cheer Pom Section consists of 11 talented dancers, all of whom have been working incredibly hard leading up to the competition”.

“I am absolutely thrilled and beyond proud! Winning gold is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and passion that each dancer put into their routines. This victory is truly a team effort, and it’s an incredible feeling to see them reach this level,” Matlala said.

In the Tertiary Cheer Hip-Hop Doubles section, the exceptionally talented Liyakhanya Matika and Lithemba Buqa were awarded a silver medal for their incredible dance routine, which boasted energy and precision.

Matlala said all the athletes were overjoyed and truly proud of their achievements.

“It is an incredible validation of all the sacrifices they’ve made along the way. This recognition means the world to them, and I am sure they only plan on going up from here.”

Cherice Mangiagalli, Student Development Officer for Sport, Arts and Culture, congratulated the CPUT Titans on their excellent results.

With a heart full of compassion, Theresa registered as a potential stem cell donor by chance after attending an event, never dreaming of the profound impact her decision would have on a desperate patient months later.

Cape Town, South Africa (17 October 2024) – Theresa never imagined that a simple act of curiosity at a Cape Town Carols event in 2022 would lead to her saving a life.

Theresa, a Cape Town mom of twins, met a donor recruiter from DKMS Africa, a non-profit organisation dedicated to saving lives through blood stem cell donations.

Far from the stressful process she’d imagined it would be, Theresa was put at ease about what being a stem cell donor entailed and went ahead to put her name down.

A few months after registering, Theresa was found to be a match for a patient in need of a life-saving transplant- a call she answered with no hesitation, DKMS shares.

Expressing excitement and gratitude at finding out she was a perfect match for a patient, her message to other potential donors is simple:

“Someone out there is waiting on you, and you could be their only hope. It’s an easy process, far easier than you’d expect. The idea of helping someone in such a simple way made the decision effortless,” she shares.

A blood cancer diagnosis is a shock and often marks the start of a race against time. Many patients’ only chance of survival is to find a matching blood stem cell donor as fast as possible.

“In a world where we should all look out for each other, this is a great way to make a meaningful difference in someone’s life, and their family,”  compassionate Theresa adds.

DKMS encourages individuals aged 17 to 55 to register and help patients in need. For more information, visit dkms-africa.org or call 0800 12 10 82.

A thoughtful exchange between a construction company contracts manager and a skydiving club owner led to a young man’s first-ever flight and free skydiving opportunity – easily the most exhilarating experience of his life yet!

George, South Africa (16 October 2024) – Lizo Majweta, a young man working for a medium-sized civil construction company, experienced the thrill of a lifetime when he had his first-ever plane flight, coupled with an exhilarating skydiving adventure.

It all began with a simple act of kindness. Phambili Civils’ contracts manager, Werner Nel, struck up a friendly conversation with Henk van Wyk, the owner of a skydiving club, during some construction work his company did at the Mosselbay Airfield. This casual exchange led to an extraordinary opportunity.

“Henk required the use of one of our construction machines for a couple of hours to lower his septic tank. Upon completion of the job, Henk asked me how much he owed me  to which I replied, ‘Would you consider giving me a free tandem skydive?’

“Henk said ‘Of course, I will let you know when there is an opening on one of the flights’,” Werner shared.

Knowing how compassionate his managing director, Niel van Blerk, was, Werner knew he would have no objection to his decision to swap a couple of machine hours to brighten someone’s day.

“Niel is a great leader and an example to all his employees. As the “father” of the company, he always has the best interest of his ± 120 “children” at heart,” Werner added.

And so, the ball was set in motion. Werner then extended the free skydiving opportunity to one of the employees working on the site – many of whom were too nervous to take the plunge.

Just as Werner thought he wouldn’t get any takers, he asked Lizo Majweta if he’d be keen.

“Lizo is one of the junior members of the team and has only been working at the company for about four months. With a big smile on his face, Lizo said he would love the opportunity to skydive.

“I double-checked a couple of times with him to ensure he would not get cold feet when the big moment arrived. He always answered with enthusiasm that he was ready to go.”

Lizo’s big day then arrived on Wednesday, 2 October, and with a leap of faith, an excited Lizo got to soar through the air.

“After the jump, he was all smiles and looked like the happiest person alive,” Werner shared.

What a beautiful reminder of the power of kindness and the thrill of seizing extraordinary opportunities!

Looking to conquer more than just the ocean, a group of swimmers will plunge into compassion from Robben Island to Big Bay in support of vulnerable children.

Cape Town, South Africa (15 October 2024) – Twelve brave and determined swimmers from the Geriatrics Water Polo Club will take on the chilly Atlantic Ocean to swim from Robben Island to Big Bay to raise funds for the Child Protection Project at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

Their goal and motivation: to raise at least R5,000 through generous sponsorships and support.

According to the Donor Relations Manager for Legacy and Community Fundraising, Pauline Solomons, the Children’s Hospital Trust has proudly supported the hospital’s key needs for 30 years, and 100% of all donations from this event will go directly to the Child Protection Project.

“This vital initiative helps safeguard vulnerable children from abuse, neglect, and violence, providing them with early intervention and care,” Solomons explains.

In South Africa, a disheartening statistic reveals that one in three children will experience violence or maltreatment before the age of 18.

The lasting effects of such trauma can be devastating, often leading to mental health challenges and substance abuse later in life.

Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital serves as a lifeline for these children, but it faces challenges in providing comprehensive care as not all staff have the specialised training needed to address child protection issues comprehensively.

Solomons shared that the Child Protection Project is working to bridge this gap by providing a coordinated, multidisciplinary approach to caring for abused and neglected children.

Recent upgrades to the hospital have created a more nurturing and safer environment, but continued training is essential to equip medical professionals and child protection authorities with the skills needed to identify and respond to suspected cases of abuse.

“We are deeply grateful to Ray McCallum and the Geriatrics Water Polo Club for their compassion and commitment to making a meaningful difference in the lives of these children and their families,” thanks Solomons.

To make a contribution or for more information, contact Pauline at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital here.

If you’ve ever wondered how deep a mother’s love and resilience runs, Sibongile’s story is a great place to start. Faced with raising a child with osteogenesis imperfecta, she not only overcame challenges in finding adequate support, but she also drew inner strength from her hardships.

Cape Town, South Africa (09 October 2024) – The prospect of becoming a mother and the thrill of welcoming a new life into the world is an indescribable experience.

However, when that little life arrives with unexpected challenges, it can be a deeply daunting adjustment. Something that Sibongile knows all too well.

The resilient mother to a precious little girl named Leona chose to turn the anxiety of raising a child with osteogenesis imperfecta into strength and courage.

Osteogenesis imperfecta, also known as brittle bone disease, is a genetic or heritable disease in which bones fracture (break) easily, often with no obvious cause or minimal injury.

According to The Chaeli Campaign, Sibongile experienced challenges in caring for Leona, including a long search for support. However, she grew stronger and found hope.

“My perspective of life changed. I became a strong, bold, and courageous woman,” she reflects.

Thanks to The Chaeli Campaign, Leona received a wheelchair, giving her the freedom to attend check-ups and participate in family activities.

Sibongile continues to pay this forward by facilitating workshops and encouraging people with disabilities to live full, active lives.

“My advice to other parents is to advocate for your child and surround yourself with supportive communities.”

Her inspiring story and those of many other parents of children with disabilities have been shared in the Chaeli Campaign’s book, Champions of Inclusion.

The book, created for the organisation’s 20th birthday, hopes to inspire individuals to embrace inclusivity and celebrate the unique qualities of every person.

The CATCH Trust’s launch of a new cricket season in Khayelitsha is levelling the playing field for township youth and allowing talented cricketers to reach their full potential.

Cape Town, South Africa (08 October 2024) – With the ongoing mission to use cricket as a vehicle for social change, the CATCH Trust is bringing the sport to the eager youngsters of Khayelitsha township!

The trust is excited to celebrate the start of the new cricket season at its Centre of Cricket Excellence in Khayelitsha, Western Cape by showcasing the next generation of township cricket talent.

Friday, 11 October marks the launch of the new season and promises to be a day of exciting youth cricket as boys and girls from CATCH Trust display their skills on the Centre’s world-class field and indoor facilities.

Attendees will learn more about the Trust’s impactful community initiatives, including the Women’s Empowerment Programme and CATCH Coaches Academy.

These programmes aim to improve cricket skills and also focus on holistic personal development, gender equity, and community upliftment.

CATCH’s Founder and Chairman, Gary Kirsten is committed to providing quality sports facilities and coaching opportunities to underprivileged township youth, ensuring they receive the same level of support as their peers in more affluent areas.

“Cricket is our language, but our work goes far beyond the pitch. Ten years ago, I visited Khayelitsha on a fact-finding mission and was shocked not to find a single sports field in the township. It became my mission to establish first-class facilities and coaching that would give kids an equal chance at the game of cricket.

“I’m a perfect example of someone who received every opportunity to explore my talents, and the trust aims to provide similar opportunities for very talented youngsters, no matter their background,” Kirsten shares.

The launch, opened to the public, will highlight the social development initiatives that lie at the heart of the Trust’s work, offering a firsthand look at how the CATCH Trust is transforming communities through cricket and beyond.

Moved by the compassion for rescue dogs, Leigh Newlands will embark on her biggest challenge yet – the 23km Ultra-Trail Cape Town to raise funds for TEARS Animal Rescue.

Cape Town, South Africa (02 October 2024) – There is truly something to admire about a person who is willing to trade the ease and comforts of their life for sacrifice and endurance out of pure compassion for those in need.

Stepping out of her comfort zone for a noble cause, Leigh Newlands is embarking on a challenging trail run. On 23 November, she’ll tackle the 23km Ultra-Trail Cape Town (UTCT) route, a distance far beyond her previous limits.

The proud pet parent of two rescue pups shared that she wants this personal challenge to count as more than just a personal milestone.

“I’m dedicating this run to a cause that’s incredibly close to my heart: animal rescue. As a proud pet parent of two rescue pups, I know firsthand the joy and love of giving these animals a second chance,” Leigh explained.

Funds raised by Leigh will go to TEARS Animal Rescue, an organisation that is dedicated to assisting vulnerable animals, rescuing, rehabilitating, and rehoming those who need it most. They do extraordinary work in giving animals a second chance at life.

“This cause is especially meaningful to me because one of our rescue pups, Banksy, came from TEARS. For every R500 donated, I’ll take on an extra obstacle on the trail, such as burpees, lunges or push-ups, and share it live on IG story.”

By supporting Leigh’s run, you’re doing more than helping her cross the finish line, but also giving animals in need the chance at a better future.

“If you believe in second chances (and that I can complete this run!), I’d love for you to be part of this journey,” Leigh shared.

To donate, visit Leigh’s GivenGain page here. Let’s get more pups into loving homes!
