Ollie, a young toddler, began experiencing vision problems that gradually worsened before being diagnosed with congenital bilateral cataracts. Although resources proved a huge stumbling block, organisations, therapists and medical experts came together to restore this little boy’s vision through a life-changing surgery at no cost!

Gqeleni, South Africa (22 October 2024) – Imagine watching your friends and toys slowly start to look a little different and seem further away each day, almost out of nowhere. You struggle to communicate this confusing, blurred vision to the people around you because, after all, you’re just a toddler.

This was the case for little Ollie, who was the picture of health. He was a happy, active toddler exploring the world with wide-eyed wonder until his mother began noticing a deterioration in his vision when he was just one year old.

His mother recalls how her son would struggle to see things from a distance while playing and even moved up close to the screen to watch TV.

Concerned by his behaviour, his mother inspected his eyes and discovered that they appeared foggy.

According to the Small Projects Foundation, Ollie’s mother immediately approached his preschool to discuss her concerns, but the staff had not noticed any issues.

However, when Ollie turned three, his teacher referred him to an occupational therapist (OT) due to concerns about his classroom participation and performance.

A 25:40 Children’s Alliance South Africa occupational therapist, Petra Stadler, assessed Ollie and referred him to Grace Vision, an NGO that operates out of Zithulele Hospital and conducts outreach at Canzibe.

A breakthrough in diagnosis was finally reached when Grace Vision diagnosed Ollie with congenital bilateral cataracts and referred him to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital for surgery.

But as life would have it, Ollie could not have the surgery he needed due to a lack of resources – a delay which deeply troubled Petra as the boy was at an age that was critical for neurological and perceptual development.

“I worried that a prolonged delay in surgery would severely stunt his learning and brain development,” Petra explained.

She soon learned about the Small Projects Foundation’s Bona Ubuntu programme, which set Ollie’s turning point in motion.

An appointment was set for the little boy to go to the ophthalmology department at Cecilia Makiwane Hospital (CMH) in East London.

With the help of Petra, prayers were finally answered, and Ollie successfully underwent cataract surgery on both eyes for free, thanks to generous intraocular lens donations from suppliers.

All of this was the collaborative efforts of CMH, 25:40 Children’s Alliance South Africa, Umbono Eyecare Project and Bona Ubuntu Programme.

His mother’s unwavering love and dedication to the organisations CMH, 25:40 Children’s Alliance South Africa, Umbono Eyecare Project and Bona Ubuntu Programme have given Ollie a second chance at life.

Petra and Ollie’s mother were overcome with emotion and gratitude, sharing:

“We are incredibly grateful to all involved for making this possible, as we are not sure what we would have done otherwise.”

Ollie’s road to recovery is still ongoing. Although he now sees clearly and is back at school, he missed out on a lot of learning due to his vision impairment. However, his mother has confirmed that since the surgery, he is doing much better.

“He is reading and starting to write now,” the grateful mother shared.

Petra continues to work with Ollie through weekly therapy sessions to help him develop the perceptual and executive functioning skills he needs to be fully prepared for Grade 1.

She is confident that Ollie’s future looks much brighter now that he has the vision to match his potential!

Please note: To protect the child’s identity as a minor, the name provided is not his real name.

Exchanging his helmet and fire hose for chalk and textbooks, Buhle Silumko’s decision to return to school and pursue a new path is truly inspiring.

Flagstaff, South Africa (18 October 2024) – It takes immense courage to go back to school and embark on a whole new career path as an adult. In a world where many feel stuck in unfulfilling jobs, this decision is not only admirable but inspiring.

It also speaks to the bold and brave spirit of going after your dreams regardless of insignificant factors such as age, other people’s opinions or society’s standards.

Excited to embark on his calling and a new career is Buhle Silumko, who recently transitioned from being a firefighter to starting a new chapter as a primary school teacher.

The team from Working on Fire—Kishugu Joint Venture celebrated his new endeavour. They shared that Silumko, from the Mkhambathi Base in Flagstaff, pursued his Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase degree while working as a firefighter.

He was recruited in 2015 and served as a SHE Representative before he began his studies at Unisa in 2019.

“I’m grateful for the support I received from the programme and will instill the discipline I gained at Working on Fire in my students,” the new teacher shared.

Silumko’s story is a reminder that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. Parting ways on good terms, Working on Fire wished him every success as he continues to inspire future generations.

A Cape Vulture who was released back into the wild in 2021 is still trackable and has been on quite the quest across the country; giving the team who helped him to freedom, a magnificent insight as to life after release!

Eastern Cape, South Africa (18 October 2024) — One of the most exciting experiences for conservationists is getting to see where animals adventure off to after they are released. Thanks to technology, many released animals are trackable, allowing those who cared for them in rehabilitation to keep up with them until their tracking devices no longer transmit signals.

Thanks to tracking technology, the team at VulPro have been able to follow one of the oldest captive-bred birds that they’ve worked with, a vulture named ‘Grey Black 04’, who has been on quite a quest over the years!

‘Grey Black 04’ was born at the National Zoological Gardens in Pretoria in 2018. Its release came in 2021 at Rookwood in the Eastern Cape thanks to VulPro (the only vulture conservation organisation of its kind) where a new life of exploring, foraging and taking to the skies ensued.

Since then, Grey Black 04 has travelled all over the country and even into Namibia. For the team, Grey Black 04’s adventures are particularly special as this vulture is their longest-tracked bird.

Currently, GreyBlack 04 has been enjoying the Eastern Cape near Komani where it is said to be looking to join a breeding colony!

“Grey Black 04’s journey highlights the success of collaborative conservation, showing how rehabilitation, captive breeding, and release programmes bring us closer to a future where vultures thrive in the wild,” the VulPro team said.

Beyond the thrill of being able to see how far a vulture’s wings take them, being trackable is also essential for future research as it helps conservationists learn more about the animal’s patterns, behaviours and movements.

Other wildlife champions who deal with different species also track their animals, like the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation, which always gives us a dose of good news when they share where their turtles’ travels have taken them.

The St Francis Animal Rescue has had an extraordinary month, dedicated to providing care and compassion to the vulnerable animals of the Sea Vista township.

St Francis Bay, South Africa (08 October 2024) – The past month has been a very busy and rewarding one at the St Francis Animal Rescue, which has a dedicated team of animal heroes who have been working round the clock to care for the most vulnerable animals of the Sea Vista township in the Eastern Cape.

Animal welfare is a tiresome yet very rewarding calling. In September alone, the animal rescue managed to sterilise 12 dogs and two cats, treat 46 animals at the vet, vaccinate 50 dogs and pups, deworm 150 pups and provide essential care to countless others.

Beyond veterinary services, the rescue team also conducted outreach initiatives, distributing pet food and blankets to community members and selling subsidised food through local spaza shops.

These efforts have made a significant difference in the lives of both animals and their owners in the Sea Vista community.

“It’s always a little overwhelming. Dogs jumping and barking, running for joy, fighting amongst one another. Dozens and dozens of little kids, some as young as five, leading the family dog onto the field.

“Puppies in barrows, baskets and boxes to be vaccinated and dewormed. Sick and wounded dogs that need to be treated or ferried to the Humansdorp Vet Clinic. Dogs to be bathed and groomed, not all happy at the prospect.  The best thing to do is take a deep breath, set up your table and get on with helping to improve the lives of the dogs of Sea Vista,” the animal rescue said, reflecting on its unwavering commitment.

A new Autism Niche Area has been launched at Nelson Mandela University in a big step of progress that will help teachers and parents support Autistic learners with their education!

Gqeberha, South Africa (08 October 2024) — As more and more people become familiar with the realities of neurodiversity, one important question continues to pop up: ‘What is our education systems doing about it?’. For Nelson Mandela University (NMU), a hopeful answer lies in its new Autism Niche Area.

Since 2011, Professor Nokhanyo Mdzanga has been relentless in her pursuit to bring the autism Niche Area into action. Last week, she and others working alongside her, finally saw their vision become tangible.

NMU officially launched the start of what the Autism Niche Area hopes to become. At its cornerstones are two educational programmes that hope to help parents and teachers alike. One course focuses on identifying learners with Autism so that they can be referred for diagnosis, while the other helps teachers working in mainstream education to teach autistic children in their schools.

Why This Means Progress?

Because Autism is a spectrum and can manifest in many different ways specific to each individual, there are many young people who fall through the cracks of the system. Some can go all the way to adulthood before ever learning they are on the spectrum; which can mean a lot of confusion as to why typical teaching methods simply haven’t worked for them.

Others simply do not have the resources for support that should be provided by schools; leaving South Africa’s promise of equal education at a shortfall. Especially on our continent, special needs schools are few and far between, or non-existent in the context of many rural communities.

In both cases, educational support falls behind, and opportunities to help learners reach their full potential are missed. So, having a resource that is equipping teachers and parents isn’t just a big win for a more inclusive South Africa, but a win for South Africa’s educational prospects as a whole.

Education is a Right, not a Privilege

“For us, education is not a privilege. It is a right for every child to be educated,” says NMU Professor Heloise Sathorar.

“The goal is for all our teachers, both in service and pre-service, to learn how to support and teach learners with Autism Spectrum Disorder, equipping them with the skills and strategies needed to create an inclusive and specialised learning environment,” adds Prof Mdzanga who is a parent of an Autistic teen herself.

“This niche area is for every parent who is not sleeping because they do not know where to go or what to do. It is dedicated to scholarship in learning, teaching, research, internationalisation and innovation within the field of autism. It aims to address challenges and opportunities associated with Autism as well as enhance the support and development of individuals with Autism,” Prof Mdzanga says.

The Autism community in Gqeberha were imperative in support the development of the programmes. Former principal of Quest School for Autistic Learners, Joan Jorritsma (who also chairs Autism Eastern Cape) as well as founders of the Umphanda Foundation for Autism, Lizahn Burger and Khosi Netnou all played a big role of support.

Springbok wing Makazole Mapimpi’s resilience has seen him overcome loss, poverty and much adversity to become the rugby star he is today. He recently shared some wise words with the young rugby players at Dale College, undoubtedly leaving a lasting impact on their lives.

Eastern Cape, South Africa (07 October 2024) – It’s not every day that you get to bask in the presence of a Springbok hero and have him share the highs and lows of his journey that have shaped him into becoming a nationally celebrated rugby player.

Sharing some of his amazing stories of true resilience was Springbok wing Makazole Mapimpi with the young players of the rugby squad at Dale College in Qonce.

During a visit to the school, Mapimpi, who hails from Tsholomnqa village in rural East London, spoke about his journey and how his constant belief in “nothing is impossible” took him to bigger avenues.

Raised by his grandmother as his mother, brother, and sister had all tragically passed on by the time he was a household name, Mapimpi’s background has been a humble and challenging one any Springbok has had to endure to succeed.

According to Karoo Heartland, the history of roses in South Africa dates back to 1657, when Jan van Riebeeck discovered the first blooms at the Cape.

The 1820 British Settlers introduced additional rose varieties to the Eastern Cape, planting them in gardens throughout the region. The first hybridised tea roses made an appearance in South Africa around 1910.

It was a visit to a botanical park in Lyon, France inspired four Eastern Cape rose enthusiasts to develop something similar back home and start a national rosarium.

Dr David Comyn offered the club a piece of ground below his home for the establishment of the rosarium and in October 2011, the first roses were planted at Bedford’s Camelot Arboretum.

The “old” rose sanctuary

Today the stunning blooms are safe and thriving in the town’s good deep soils!

“They grow in happy companionship with indigenous pelargoniums, sutera and agapanthus, clambering up shrubs and shady trees, filling the garden with a heavenly fragrance.

“Here you will find roses hardly ever seen in modern gardens. Eventually, this sanctuary will protect more than 2,000 roses!” Karoo Heartland shares.

Through storytelling, play-based activities, and reading aloud, children were encouraged to embrace their mother tongue and develop a love for reading at the Nal’ibali Literacy Month Festival in Sweetwaters.

Sweetwaters, South Africa (01 October 2024) – Under the umbrella concept that ‘All Languages Matter’, the community of Sweetwaters in the Eastern Cape got to experience the joy of literature, stories and reading in their mother language.

The Nal’ibali Literacy Month Festival in Sweetwaters, Eastern Cape, celebrated the beauty of African languages, culture, and stories. In partnership with Equal Education, the festival provided a joyful and immersive experience for children, parents, and teachers.

The festival featured storytelling and play-based learning activities, including singing and dancing for 145 children from the Sweetwaters township.

The celebration got off to a great start with kids participating in singing and dancing, led by Nal’ibali Eastern Cape Coordinator Dr Nompucuko Zakaza.

In addition to sharing iintsomi (folklore) with the children, the Nal’ibali team read stories from the anthology and reading supplement Nal’ibali children’s stories.

Children were also encouraged to read aloud in front of the assembled audience and demonstrated exceptional understanding, enthusiasm, and reading skills.

“It takes a community to raise a child. We hope that this event will develop and make a long-lasting impact on Sweetwaters’ children. Hopefully, when we return with Nal’ibali, there will be more children,” Siya Ncetani from Equal Education remarked.

The festival not only celebrated literacy but also strengthened the community bond, as parents and teachers joined together to support the children’s learning.

By distributing reading materials and early reading handbooks, the Nal’ibali team ensured that the seeds of a reading revolution would continue to grow long after the festival ended.
