To hear that a hospital has reached a point that they no longer have any COVID-19 patients is news that we should all celebrate!

Western Cape, South Africa (21 February 2021) – A Hospital in Cape Town is celebrating “zero covid patients”, and South African social media is abuzz with the news.

It’s been 332 days since the lockdown started in South Africa. During this time, many of our hospitals have been inundated with COVID cases, sometimes overwhelming the facilities and stretching our exhausted frontline workers even further. To hear that a hospital has reached a point that they no longer have any COVID-19 patients is news that we should all celebrate!

The photo showing the good news started being shared across Facebook on the 19th of February 2021.

Meanwhile, South Africa’s recoveries have passed the 1,4 million mark, and the country has seen a steady decline in Active Cases for 40 days now!

While the South African Government and many mainstream media News sites push the “total cases”, here at Good Things Guy, we like to look at the same numbers in a different way – a way that breaks down that big number into what it really means! And by doing this, we are able to see that our recoveries far outweigh our active cases. And by breaking it down, we can report that today that we have a total of 43,874 active cases and can celebrate 1,409,553 recoveries!!!

COVID-19 is the greatest global shock in decades. Millions of lives have been lost, and the world’s economy likely faces the worst recession since the 1930s. The resulting loss of employment and income will cause further damage to livelihoods, health, and sustainable development.

The numbers can often seem confusing. As of today, South Africa has conducted 8,867,659 tests and had 1,502,367 total positive results, but positive results change daily as people recover, so even though there have had over 1,5 million positive results, we have also had over 1,4 million recoveries. See confusing.

Here is a different way to report the numbers while still using the same numbers:

  • Recoveries: 1,409,553 (2,646 more than yesterday)
  • Active Cases: 43,874 (1,037 LESS than yesterday)
  • Deaths: 48,940 (81 more than yesterday)

We know that this pandemic is significant, and many will suffer, and we also know not everyone will survive, but the majority of South Africa (and the globe) will recover!

We can also break down the Active Cases further to see where each region stands:

  • KwaZulu-Natal – 14,542
  • Western Cape – 6,975
  • Free State – 6,963
  • Gauteng – 4,791
  • North West – 4,340
  • Northern Cape: 2,783
  • Mpumulanga: 1,610
  • Limpopo: 1,208
  • Eastern Cape: 662

Our hearts go out to everyone who has tragically lost their lives to this virus, and our thanks go out to all the incredible frontline heroes who are helping us get through this pandemic.

Please remember that we still need to be wearing our masks, social distancing and staying safe.
