Ian Dommisse recently held an interview for an upcoming job, and when he met Shadrak Moses, he knew there was something special, even if he didn’t fit the role Ian needed; so Ian helped find him a different job instead.
Cape Town, South Africa (06 June 2024) – Ian Dommisse, a landscape architect known for his work on the Octopus Garden at the V&A Waterfront, was looking to fill a new role for an upcoming project so he started the interview process, came up with a series of questions and allotted 15 minutes per candidate, to get a feel for them before shortlisting the potential people for the job.
The first interview was with Shadrak Moses. Before long, the 15-minute window had long passed and an hour later, Ian and Shadrak ended the interview. Ian shared that while Shadrak wasn’t right for the role he was looking to fill, he was an inspiring young man. Ian became determined to help him find a job.

How do you gauge someone’s attitude? – A good news story
“I recently went through a hiring process for a position at one of my projects. I was looking for someone with a positive, can-do attitude and had gathered a list of questions which were said to help with this. I set up 15-minute interview slots. Shadrak Moses was first up. An hour later I shook his hand and said that I’d be in touch.
While he didn’t align with the role I was looking for, his resilience (after over coming a hard start to life) and incredible attitude stayed with me and I became intent on finding an opportunity for him. After a meeting with Shannon Smuts Brauer from Pure Good Food PTY I mentioned how impressed I’d been. She was looking for a barista for a new restaurant at the V&A Waterfront and would be able to even train someone.
Fast forward three weeks and I just had one of the best tasting cappuccinos from a smiling Shadrak (wearing clothing he designed himself by the way). A shout out to Liezl Conradie and her team from The Homestead Projects for Street Children for nurturing talent and enabling life changing situations for people like Shadrak.
