Cape Town-based photographer Jay Caboz’ ‘Slaapstad’ has earned second place in the Epson International Pano Awards!

Global (08 October 2024) — Cape Town-based photographer Jay Caboz’ photograph ‘Slaapstad’ has earned a proud place in the Epson International Pano Awards—the world’s largest photographic competition dedicated to the part of panoramic photography.

Many have enjoyed Cape Town’s natural fog show, where the famous foggy ‘Table Cloth’ dresses Table Mountain, and the city is seemingly tucked in by Mother Nature’s blanket. But few have seen the view from a great height, let alone captured it.

Jay took a gorgeous series of shots starring Lion’s Head, glittering city lights and dream-like hues adorning the sky as the fog rolled in and onward.

His praised photograph, ‘Slaapstad’ feels like peering into a Romanticism era painter’s fever-dream. The lone ranger atop a peak, the rush of the fog like a waterfall and the breathtaking palette of sky all work so seamlessly together, it feels as if each element were in cahoots with the others.

It’s easy to understand how out of the thousands of entries (over 4,000 at that, as Jay shares), this photo would climb to the second overall place and earn gold in the Built Environment Category! Additionally, another photo dubbed ‘Icarus’ is also placed highly in silver.

Meanwhile, in other epic photography news, a portrait of a Kruger lion—whose eye looks as if the universe itself lies beneath it—has won an impressive photography competition category! Take a look here.

A portrait of Kruger lion—whose eye looks as if the universe itself lies beneath it—has won an impressive photography competition category. Why? Just take a look at this photograph:

Global (27 September 2024) — A mighty lion looks directly into the camera lens. His tongue protrudes, almost as if he is looking at his next meal. His expression is intimidating, even without his majestic mane in full view. These elements alone give the onlooker a deep sense of the sublime; as if it were a snapshot from the last clear visual memory his prey ever saw. But that’s not what made this Kruger lion a winning portrait.

One eye boasts a soft, fierce flavour of amber. The other is a deep purple with hints of galactic blue peering through. In the right light, it looks as if this Kruger lion holds in his left eye, a portal to the rest of the universe. A doorway to the rest of existence. Perhaps, he does.

Australian photographer Lewis Burnett captured the breathtaking shot on a breathtaking early morning drive in the Southern half of the Kruger National Park. Here, he was lucky enough to spend nearly half an hour with the lion few will ever see up close (or ever be brave enough to).

His shot, aptly titled ‘Window to the Soul’ was entered into this year’s Nature TTL photography competition where it went on to win the Wild Portraits category for an obvious reason–it feels impossible to look away.

“Staring into the eye of this mighty male lion is enough to make you shrink back in your seat,” says Lewis.

“There’s no solid consensus as to what happened to his eye,” the photographer adds. “But weirdly enough his brother also has it. I’ve heard its genetics, that it was a spitting cobra, or perhaps it was an infection, who knows…But I do know one thing, he’s one intimidating lion!”

You can see all the entries, here.

Matthew Willman is a renowned photographer who captured many incredible photographs of Nelson Mandela. Now, his works are being showcased in the ’30 Years the Occupants’ exhibition—a collection of art and pictures that are walking visitors through South Africa’s resilience both in the past and for the future:

Cape Town, South Africa (13 May 2024) — South Africa’s rich tapestry of history, marked by trauma, resilience, and triumphs, continues to be woven through the art of storytelling. Focusing on South Africa’s narrative since 1994, art and photographic exhibition ’30 Years the Occupants’ is walking visitors through collective memories of our country and moments that encapsulate our resilience; set to inspire resilience for our future.

On show until 31 May at Cape Town’s HUB Gallery, ’30 Years the Occupants’ brings together a collection of photo essays from the fantastic Matthew Willman’s alongside other works.

Matthew Willman is a renowned documentary and fine art photographer originally from Durban whose creativity was heavily shaped by his childhood during the latter years of apartheid and Nelson Mandela’s ‘walk to freedom’.

As a commissioned photographer for the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Willman went on to capture South Africa’s democratic shift. This afforded him many intimate experiences with the man whom, for Willman, ‘embodied the very spirit and conviction we all possess as Africans in the world today.’

The ‘Mandela Heritage Collection’ features a series of photographs taken over a number of years that capture Mandela, his journey, and key elements of the struggle, including images ‘Freedom Charter’ – ZK Matthews’s handwritten Freedom Charter – and ‘Rivonia Trial Notes’ – historic documents (unavailable to the public) from the infamous Rivonia Trial which saw Nelson Mandela and eight others sentenced to life in prison. The photographic essay also includes portraits of Mandela taken by Willman during his time with the legendary figure.

Willman’s thought-provoking works bring us back to the beginnings of our democracy and the resilience that brought us to it.

Al Wadded by Isghaan Adams

The photographic essay will appear alongside a curated collection of around 20 photographs, paintings, mixed-media artworks and textile pieces from the Spier Collection that narrate an interconnected story of national memory and experience. Here, artworks from renowned artists like John Murray, Billie Zangewa, Thandiwe Msebenzi, Sue Williamson, Ayana V Jackson and Cinga Samson will be featured in a collection that engages with the ‘Mandela Heritage Collection’ in a thought-provoking way.

Together, these works, as well as their appreciation, use the power of storytelling as a tool to recognise experience, representing both voices and silences. This exhibition considers the stories of our past, those of our present and the possibilities imagined for our future – inviting audiences to think carefully about their own internal perspectives of South Africa’s narratives.

What began as a quest to snap whatever made her heart smile has become a world of opportunity for Priscilla the ‘Happy Snapper’. Despite never imagining that her work could qualify to be exhibited, Priscilla proved herself wrong and has since been selected to have her happy snaps showcased all around the world!

Mossel Bay, South Africa (03 April 2024)—Mossel Bay photographer and self-described ‘Happy Snapper’ Priscilla Fick discovered that she was not the only one her photos brought joy to.

What began as snaps she’d take on her phone of the things she found beautiful or that ‘made her heart smile’, has excitingly turned into much more for the budding photographer.

Not only has her search for the little doses of happiness all around us proved to be the most wholesome way to keep her creative flair alive; it has also turned into a talent all its own. And, one that could become her ticket to exploring the world, all while bringing it a little more happiness.

After downloading an app for photographers, Gurushots, with various challenges, Priscilla took her shot to share her work and be inspired by others.

“All I can say is ‘wow, there are many photos that inspire me to want to keep searching for the beauty in the world’,” she tells Good Things Guy.

But, this was more than a photographic showcase!

“One of the challenges was an Exhibition Challenge. To be eligible to exhibit in such a challenge, you need to have a minimum number of 4900 votes and then pay a fee to have your work displayed. Unlike many internet-based challenges, one cannot simply share your picture and say, “please vote for my photo”, only other members of the app can vote and and because there are no names attached to any photos the voting is quite objective.”

Thanks to her ‘happy snaps’ and the bravery of sharing her work, Priscilla’s pictures ended up winning those votes; granting her the opportunity for a digital exhibition in Mexico. And Chicago. And Cyprus. And Johannesburg for not one, but two winning exhibitions.

As it turned out, the Happy Snapper and her photos were becoming quite a photographic force of joy to be reckoned with.

“I never thought my work would ever be good enough to be showcased—but it is!” beams Priscilla.

The Happy Snapper would love to attend all of the exhibitions (her dream is to become a travel blogger). But for now, the Johannesburg display (running from 26 to 28 April) would be a terrific start.

Priscilla’s story reminds us that sometimes, simply following what makes you happy can lead you to the most unexpected (and marvellous) places. And those who believe in this sentiment passionately are encouraged to help her get there!

Priscilla is currently seeking a little help to secure her plane ticket and cover her travel expenses to Joburg. Her accommodation is sorted, and she shares that any additional funds would go towards an online photography course!

You can help the Happy Snapper out here.

After a photography plea to give older dogs a photoshoot went out, Paw Prints Rescue and Rehoming in Botha’s Hill were met with an incredible response: photographers of all experience levels were ready to give the pooches their moment in the spotlight—a light that might just guide them to new homes.

Durban, South Africa (19 March 2024) — In February, Paw Prints Rescue and Rehoming in KwaZulu-Natal’s Botha’s Hill got real about a challenge they were facing.

With over a hundred rescue dogs in their care, the need to help the older ones find homes was serious. Many of the young adult and slightly older pooches have been with Paw Prints since they were pups themselves, and as many rescue centres know, the more time ticks on in an animal’s life, the harder it can be to find them a loving home to call their own.

Good photos can make the world of difference in capturing a dog’s essence. Knowing this, Paw Prints pleaded with their community for photographers to come by, take some snaps of the ‘older’ dogs and give them their moment in the spotlight—a light that might just guide them home.

Their social media post reached the right people, and in no time, photographers were lining up!

“Our appeal for help was well received and we had so many professional and amateur photographers reach out,” says Jade Ashford of Paw Prints.

Jade shares that they are now in a blessed position to update their social media pages with the new, gorgeous photos.

“We hope that it will help many more people come visit and fall in love with our babies,” Jade adds.

Some photographers included high school learners, like Evan DuPlessis, clubs of photographers like the Westville Camera Club and other lens-wielding wizards!

Hopes are bright that the new photos will do a world of good for the dogs that desperately need it. So, for those looking to add a new family member to their homes, this is your sign to check out Paw Prints’ pooches on social media, or visit them on 4 Clement Stott Road in Bothas Hill!

About Paw Prints Rescue and Rehoming

“Paw Prints Rescue and Rehoming is a pro-life adoption and rescue centre based in Bothas Hill, KZN. We are open for puppy cuddles, adoptions, community service and volnteering; pop in to our thrift shop or if you [are] up for it, we have a lovely trail which our dogs love to explore and they will happily take you for a walk,” invites Jade.

A Grade 9 Kingswood College pupil snapped a photo in Port Alfred that’s left South Africans in awe. The heartwarming part? People loved it so much they are encouraging her to enter it into competitions!

Port Alfred, South Africa (06 March 2024) — A Grade 9 Kingswood College pupil has left South Africans in awe after she captured Mother Nature at her finest in the Eastern Cape’s Port Alfred.

Shared by her school, Siré Schoncken’s photo captures a bolt of lightning, rolling waves and a looming grey cloud on a deserted part of the beach.

Beyond the breathtaking photo, there’s heart to this story in just how encouraging South Africans were in their responses to the budding photographer’s moment in the lightning light. On social media, comments ranged from backing Siré to enter her work into a competition all the way to nods of agreement that this student has a future in photography.

Siré’s mom Desica shared that her daughter is “beyond excited about the reaction of her photo.”

Captured on a Samsung phone camera, locals can’t wait to see what this budding photographer might be capable of with professional gear.

In any creative field (especially for young creatives), encouragement can be the difference between giving your talents a go or pushing them to the side. And seeing how many strangers were so kind to a young talent made our hearts very warm today.

One of the most-anticipated global gallery events of the year is dedicating its entire exhibition, ‘Human Stories’ to South African photographers!

London, United Kingdom (04 August, 2023) — Across the world, cultures intersect, inspire and enchant one another. So, it only makes sense that this year’s ‘Human Stories’ series by NOW Gallery in London is dedicating its 2023 event to one of the most culturally rich places on Earth—South Africa through the lenses of South African photographers.

As one of the most exciting exhibitions of its kind worldwide, Human Stories has become a highly anticipated event showcasing the names to know in the world of photography, and we couldn’t be more proud to see South Africa’s up-and-coming in the spotlight, together for the ‘Young South Africa’ exhibition.

From October to November, six South African photographers will take the gallery’s centre stage; each documenting the culture they have experienced in South Africa through visual tellings.

South African Photographers in the Spotlight

The exhibition is spotlighting artists who capture ‘creative empowerment’; which is something worth fighting for and worth getting excited about! Despite all the challenges we face as South Africa, creativity continues to grow through the cracks, enriching all of us locals (and global onlookers) in return.

Each of the photographers will bring a different perspective to the exhibition; from Anita Hlazo’s Nganga through a fashion lens to Joburg’s Nikki Zakkas who narrates her work uniquely through her subject’s cultural riches.

Then there’s Aart Verrips and the idea of the Rainbow Nation reimagined through different forms of self-expression.

“’We are thrilled to feature exceptional South African talent in sharing their creativity through lived experiences. The show will reflects a fresh creative agency that embodies the evocative music culture, distinct sense of identity, and political articulation of the young people of South Africa.”—Kaia Charles, curator.

The World Sports Photography Awards recognize the most captivating and emotional moments frozen in time by talented photographers from around the globe.

Global (03 August 2023) – In the world of sports, there’s something magical about freezing a moment in time through photography. That’s precisely what Patrick Smith of Getty Images achieved with his breathtaking shot, taking us on a journey of wonder and awe.

World Sports Photography Awards
DORAL, FLORIDA – OCTOBER 29: Team Captain Lee Westwood of Majesticks GC plays a shot on the driving range during the semifinals of the LIV Golf Invitational – Miami at Trump National Doral Miami on October 29, 2022 in Doral, Florida.

The World Sports Photography Awards, an esteemed global competition, showcased 24 winning images that transcended the boundaries of sports categories. From American Football to Basketball, Cycling to Gymnastics, and Football to more, these stunning visuals conveyed the very soul of each discipline.

This year, over 700 professional sports photographers from a staggering 70 countries submitted their work. The result was a collection of heart-stopping action shots and powerful depictions of teamwork and perseverance. From elite athletes to grassroots champions, these images are bound to elevate your sports coverage and leave a lasting impact on your audience.

Created to honour the artistry and dedication of sports photography, the World Sports Photography Awards are the pinnacle of recognition in this field. More than a mere snapshot, these photographs tell riveting stories of emotion, passion, athleticism, and unwavering focus, elements that lie at the core of every sport. Now in its fourth edition, the World Sports Photography Awards continue to attract the world’s finest sports photographers. With a distinguished panel of judges from sports, media, politics, brands, and creative industries, these awards celebrate the incredible artistry behind sports images.

One of the highlights this year was the inclusion of entries from the “Pro” space, bringing fresh perspectives and raising the bar for future participants.

As Sophie Collins, Chief Marketing Officer at MPB and a judge for the 2023 awards, remarked, “As a judge, and as a sponsor of the 2023 ‘World Sports Photography Awards’ I was incredibly impressed by the quality of this year’s entries. The art of photography is about encapsulating emotions and feelings in an instant, and being able to tell a compelling story which aims to inspire the spectator long after they’ve experienced it. It’s been exciting to see the new entries in the ‘Pro’ space being shortlisted for the awards too as they have elevated the expectations for next year’s participants!”

In essence, the World Sports Photography Awards not only honour exceptional photographers but also immortalize the essence of sports in every frame. It’s a celebration of the beauty, dedication, and inspiration that sports bring to our lives. So, as we continue to marvel at these extraordinary images, we eagerly look forward to the next edition, where the bar will undoubtedly be raised even higher!

A budding photographer from KZN is behind the photos that captured a nation and the world—’Miss Albany’. The pictures have surpassed viral status at over a million views, but this was no commercial campaign. Here’s the special story behind the project:

South Africa (13 July, 2023) — By now most people with social media access have seen a dose of pure joy pop up on their screens thanks to the viral ‘Miss Albany’, AKA the ‘Albany Bread Girl’.

Albany

You’d be forgiven for thinking this was some kind of campaign paid for by Albany, but the full story behind the viral photos and video is worlds away from corporate photography.

Its story begins with a budding photography student, Lungisa Mjaji who hails from KwaZulu-Natal. As a recently enrolled photography student at the Tshwane University of Technology, Mjaji was tasked with a university assignment which led him to a life-changing idea.

His project, ‘My Footprint’ aimed to capture elements of rural South Africa in a different, joyful light.

Mjaji’s mother was fully behind his creative journey, funding the bread for the shoot as the photographer shared.

Miss Albany is the photographer’s 3-year-old niece who happily agreed to be the model for the project. Anointed with a proudly South African prop, little Lethukukhanya Mjaji quickly became the face of a South African moment everyone can relate to—the joy of simplicity.

With a beaming smile like hers against the backdrop of muddy waters, it wasn’t long until the photos and videos blew up and captured South Africans as well as global onlookers, receiving millions of views.

Something about the pureness of her smile against a backdrop that is far from glossy reminded South Africans of our nation’s spirit.

Since the photos broke the internet in the best way, people have demanded billboards and for Lethukukhanya to become the face of the brand.

In fact, she has resonated so much with people that artists have even dedicated creations to her.

Thanks to Mjaji and the magic his photography created, both he and his niece now have better opportunities in life. Albany has reportedly even given them both gifts, and the next step we’re all rooting for is a billboard!

A fire that started yesterday in the Bainskloof Valley has entered into it’s second day as strong winds have fanned the flame. Justin Sullivan was on the scene and captured photos of our heroic firefighters in action.

A fire that stated mid-morning in the Bainskloof Valley quickly spread yesterday due to high velocity winds and challenging undulating terrain. I spent the .

Teams from Cape Winelands DM, Cape Nature, WOF, VWS and the Red Ants were deployed alongside the NCC crews to protect property and secure the flanks.

“The fire in Bainskloof pass spread rapidly due to the extreme weather conditions despite the valiant effort of our fire teams. Fire crews were unable to contain the fire as it came down at Arc n Ciel and Kranskop and sections of Orchards and olive groves were damaged. We were unable to use aerial support due to the prevailing gusting winds conditions. Additional ground teams have been deployed to try and contain the fire which is now burning high up in the Kranse.”

“We have no reported injuries, all our resources are stretched to the limit, fire fighting operations will continue and we are expect the extreme weather conditions to prevail throughout the day.”

Justin Sullivan has been exploring photography in the greater Cape Town region for the past 2 years, broadening his expertise in Documentary Photography – specialising in Cape Wild Fires.

After completing his secondary schooling at the all-boys-boarding school Michaelhouse, Justin studied Development & Environmental Studies at the University of Stellenbosch. Justin completed majors in Geography & Environmental Studies, Public & Development Management, and a half-major in Sociology.

Sullivan now focusses his work on highlighting contemporary issues within South Africa, using photography to display insights into an unknown world. His documentary work from numerous Wild Fires around Cape Town has been highly recognised both locally and internationally, with various publications for print and online media.

Sullivan spent the night with NCC hotshot crews as they tackled the right flank up the mountain:
