Australia (21 October 2023) – The Australian Firefighters Calendar is back for 2025, and it’s bringing the heat once again! This year’s edition promises to be bigger, better, and cuter than ever, with a unique theme that pairs the country’s bravest heroes with some of the most adorable animals you’ve ever seen. From playful puppies to cuddly koalas, these firefighters are showing their softer side while supporting fantastic causes. It’s not just a calendar – it’s a celebration of courage, compassion, and community spirit.
For years, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has captured hearts across the world, and many of our Good Things Guy readers eagerly wait for the announcement of its release. Though we don’t get the calendars physically in South Africa, our annual article is the next best thing!
Since its launch in 1993, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has raised over $3.5 million for charities across Australia and beyond. And 2025 is no different – the calendar will continue supporting vital causes, from wildlife rescues to children fighting cancer. This year, the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital is one of the proud recipients of the calendar’s charity donations, helping rescue and rehabilitate injured wildlife.
As Dr Bree Talbot, Head Wildlife Veterinary Surgeon at the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital, beautifully puts it: “This generous support allows us to continue saving Australian wildlife and making a lasting difference.”
But it’s not just about the pictures – these firefighters have become global conservation ambassadors, using their fame to raise awareness for causes like the protection of Australian wildlife. The 2025 calendar editions feature over 25 firefighters from aviation, military, and urban fire services. Each month reveals heart-warming photos of these heroes with animals like koalas, kittens, and even horses.
There are five different editions this year, so there’s a calendar for every animal lover out there!
With the 2025 Australian Firefighters Calendar, we get a feel-good mix of bravery, kindness, and a whole lot of cuteness. What more could you ask for? Grab a cup of tea, enjoy the pictures, and let’s celebrate these everyday heroes who are making the world a better place, one adorable moment at a time!

Johannesburg, South Africa (19 October 2024) – I’ve always had a deep love for movies, series, music, entertainment, and just getting out there.
One of the best parts of my job is that sometimes, I get the chance to experience these things before anyone else does. There’s something about seeing a movie ahead of its release, or getting hooked on a series before the rest of the world even knows it exists, that makes me want to shout from the rooftops.
So, with that in mind, I’ve created “The Friday Five” – a shout-out to five good things you should check out this week. Let’s dive in!
Sticking with the Halloween vibes, I got to watch two killer films this week that’ll give you all the feels.
First up is Caddo Lake. When an 8-year-old girl goes missing on the mysterious Caddo Lake, a series of past deaths and disappearances begin to connect, unravelling a broken family’s history. The film kicks off with a slow burn in the first act, setting the scene beautifully. But it’s the second act where everything takes a twist – and trust me, by the third act, you’ll be questioning everything you thought you knew. The cinematography is stunning, and it’s one of those rare films that sticks with you long after it ends. There’s a line in the movie I just can’t shake: “They didn’t mean to leave us.” It’s haunting. Caddo Lake is now available on MAX and will be hitting cinemas soon.
The second film, It’s What’s Inside, is wild! The premise is a group of friends that gather for a pre-wedding party that descends into an existential nightmare when an estranged friend arrives with a mysterious game that awakens long-hidden secrets, desires and grudges. I can’t give too much away, but let me just say this – it’s one of those films where you’re constantly asking, “What the hell is going on?!” It’s a total rollercoaster. You’ll want to put your phone down for this one. It’s fun, it’s thrilling, and a horror ride you don’t want to miss. Now available on Netflix.
I was really excited for Doctor Odyssey – I mean, come on, Grey’s Anatomy meets cruise ships with Joshua Jackson at the helm? What’s not to love, right? Well, a lot, actually. It’s like a medical car crash at sea – you might want to give this one a skip but maybe watch at least one episode for the sheer absurdity of it all.
If you want to see Joshua Jackson in something that’s actually good, check out 2023’s Fatal Attraction or 2021’s Dr Death. Both are captivating, and Jackson’s performances are absolutely outstanding. You won’t regret it! Doctor Odyssey (if you want to give it a go) is available on Hulu, ABC, or Prime (to rent), while Fatal Attraction and Dr Death are both on AppleTV and Prime (to rent).
On the flip side, Disclaimer is absolutely brilliant! Cate Blanchett and Kevin Kline are perfection. The series follows Catherine Ravenscroft, a television documentary journalist who’s made a career exposing the wrongdoings of highly respected institutions. The direction is stellar, thanks to Alfonso Cuarón – you can really feel his signature style in the long, immersive shots. We’re only three episodes in, and I’m already hooked! It’s currently streaming on AppleTV+.
On the music front, you’ve got to check out Mike Posner’s “Beautiful Day” (acoustic version). It’s one of those songs you’ll want to start every morning with. Posner’s struggles and near-death experiences inspired this heartfelt anthem, and it’s a reminder that every day is a gift. I can’t stop playing it on repeat – it just hits differently every time. It’s a beautiful day to be alive.
Another track you need to hear is Grace VanderWaal’s “What’s Left of Me”. Grace first wowed us when she won America’s Got Talent back in 2015 at just 12 years old. Fast forward nine years, and she’s found has found her name and her way. I honestly haven’t stopped listening to it. Grace has truly come into her own, and I’m here for it!
Okay, let’s talk apps. Duolingo is an absolute vibe right now. I know it’s been around forever – I first joined in October 2013 – but I recently gave it a proper go again, and I’m loving it. I decided to switch from French (what was I even thinking in 2013?) and started learning Zulu.
After just three weeks, I’m actually having conversations with people! The confidence it’s given me is insane. Seriously, if you’re thinking about learning a new language, give Duolingo another shot – it’s like having a pocket-sized tutor. Ngiyayithanda.
Last but certainly not least, if you’re in or around Umhlanga, treat yourself to breakfast at The Oyster Box. This place is everything you’d want and then some. The breakfast buffet is next-level – we’re talking bottomless champagne, overflowing oysters, and a view that’ll leave you breathless. It’s not just a meal; it’s an experience. If you’re looking to spoil yourself or someone you love, this is the spot. Trust me, you’ll leave with a full heart (and belly)!
There’s so much good stuff to enjoy out there, and I hope my Friday Five gives you a little spark to check out something new this week. Whether it’s a thrilling film, a captivating series, a fresh tune, or even brushing up on a new language, there’s always something to discover. Life is too short not to indulge in the things that bring us joy – so go on, treat yourself!
Here’s to good vibes and even better entertainment!

Cape Town, South Africa (18 October 2024) – It may be hard to imagine, but just like many of us, South African keynote speaker and media personality Liezel van der Westhuizen has had her fair share of challenges in life, knocking her confidence and halting her momentum.
We often place public figures on a glamorous pedestal, forgetting that they, too, experience difficulties while navigating this turbulent journey called life.
In a recent post, Liezel bravely opened up about how experiencing negative media attention and hurtful comments from those she trusted tested her resolve, but she refused to be defeated.
“I had to remind myself that I am enough and I am winning,” she wrote.
Liezel further shared her insights into the power of resilience and how it was the key ingredient to her success despite feelings of wanting to throw in the towel.
Insecurities about her height and appearance were also a huge stumbling block that took a long time to overcome.
“I’m a tower of power, enthusiasm, experience, and resilience now…but it hasn’t always been this way. Getting teased about my height in my formative years, really left a mark.
“My hair, my way of dressing, how I speak, and how I stand, have been broken down and critiqued until I felt smaller than an ant.”
Despite wanting to crawl into a hole and disappear, Liezel chose to stand tall and continue to put herself out there.
“Resilience, in people, refuses to be extinguished. It pushed me to put myself out there – baby steps first, but eventually striding with confidence.”
Having emerged stronger on the other side, Liezel encourages South Africans to see setbacks as essential for growth. And that by learning, adapting, and soaring, they can truly thrive.
“Never lose sight of who you are and what makes you unique. Let resilience be your guiding light, navigating you through challenges,” Liezel encourages.

Global (15 October 2024) — Fans of Batman’s world and all its various spin-offs are likely already very familiar with the latest rollout from Gotham, ‘The Penguin’ starring a hardly recognisable Colin Farrell. In fact, even if you aren’t necessarily a fan of the notorious fictional city’s stories but simply can’t resist an intriguing show with thick plot lines, you might’ve picked up on the fact that the series is revealing itself to be quite the hit. According to IMDb, it’s the second-biggest show in the world right now!
All of this is hardly bad for the mood for South African actress and self-proclaimed ‘boeremeise’, Marié Botha who nabbed the role of villain Magpie in the show that’s already made the 100 top-rated series of all time list!
As a matter of fact, the episode Marié is in (episode 4) has been hailed as ‘the best episode of The Penguin yet,’ per Esquire. By IMDb standards, the episode has also reached the gold standard, thanks to a rating of 9.6/10.
It’s a big deal in the world of dreams for Pretoria-born Marié, who certainly deserves her flowers.
Born in Pretoria, Marié left home at 18 and headed off to the Big Apple to study at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Following her BFA degree (which she earned with honours) Marie enrolled in the masters programme at Yale’s school of Drama—a position only 17 other students achieved despite thousands of applicants.
Equipped with an MFA—the jet fuel of her acting dreams—Marié began working as an actress in New York. With countless auditions, indie films, commercial voice-overs and Off-Broadway productions under her belt, Marié finally got her big break after 14 long years.
“I play Magpie, a villain with a split personality and a penchant for shiny things,” shares Marie. “When we see flashbacks of Sofia Falcone in Arkham Asylum, we meet Magpie. She befriends Sofia, but eventually paranoia takes over and Sofia starts to see Magpie as a threat and a spy. This is the first time we see Sofia truly pushed to the edge and the outcome is dire.”
Marié explains that the role was complex but a gift:
“Playing Magpie was like walking a tightrope. In one way, she is this beautiful, dreamy, childlike creature, and on the other side of her sits darkness, trauma and vengeance. It’s a gift to get to play characters that call on me to transform and put myself in parts of a psyche very unlike my own—Magpie is like that.
“She is troubled, haunted by childhood trauma, yet still trying to maintain positivity and look for beauty in her life. It’s sort of sweet and deeply sad. She is very dear to me.”
Marié refers to the callback process as being the ‘most intense’ of her life.
“I was visiting my family in South Africa at the time and had just extended my trip when I got the callback. It was to be on Zoom with the director of episode 4, Helen Shaver. I logged on at midnight, 6pm New York time, and the most intense callback of my life ensued. We worked for ages on the first Magpie scene, doing it this way and that, almost to a point where I thought, “Am I messing this up? I don’t know which way is up anymore.” Right after the audition I was certain that was the end of the road on this one. But the next day I got a call from my agent that I had booked the job and needed to be on a plane back to New York the next morning for a hair and makeup test!”
For the Batman fan, it was a dream role and one of many complex characters she hopes to play.
“For as long as I can remember, I’ve been attracted to playing villains. And for as long as I can remember, I have been a Harry Potter fan,” says Marié of her ‘dream role’.
She adds that she’d love to play Bellatrix Lestrange but also doesn’t feel ready to say goodbye to Magpie.
“It excites me that Matt Reeves is cooking up a lot more in the DC Universe, and I do feel that this incredible character has a lot more story to offer. Fingers crossed!”
As for her South African roots, Marié shares that despite the length of her life in New York and identifying as a New Yorker in her soul, she will always be a South African at heart.
“It’s impossible to let go of the Afrikaans ‘boeremeisie’ in me, and I would never want to. The moment I step off the plane in Cape Town and smell the sea air, hear the melting pot of languages, step through immigration like a local and see my parents waiting to take me to Hermanus, I know I’m home, always.”
You can catch The Penguin on Showmax and M-Net with new episodes every Monday! You can catch the trailer below:

Morocco (15 October 2024) – After an exemplary year in MotoSports, South African Brad Cox (26) has achieved his goal after being crowned the World Rally2 Champion in the 2024 Rallye Du Maroc, World Rally-Raid Championship last weekend. Brad, who races for BAS World KTM Racing, scored a double whammy by winning the rally and the title in Morocco, snatching the championship from Romain Dumontier (Team Honda) with Konrad Dąbrowski (Duust Rally) coming third.
His exceptional achievement caught the attention of the Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture of South Africa, Gayton McKenzie, who took to social media to congratulate the young competitor, saying:
“26-year-old South African Bradley Cox has won the World Rally 2 Rally Raid Championship for 2024. This is really fitting because next year we are hosting the big one, W2RC, in SA.”
The Minister is referencing the fact that South Africa is set to host the third round of the World Rally-Raid Championship (W2RC) from 18 to 24 May 2025 in North West and Limpopo. The event will feature diverse terrain, with the race route traversing bushveld plateaus, river crossings, and savannah plains in the areas of Sun City, Thabazimbi, and the agricultural heart of North West.
Excitement is mounting for the event following Brad’s impressive win on his new 2025 KTM 450 Rally Factory Replica – as a privateer rather than a factory rider – which is made even more special by the fact that friend and mentor, Ross Branch (Botswana) won the RallyGP World Championship in Morocco. RallyGP is the top moto class, with riders and manufacturers eligible for the World Championship in FIM rankings. This class is only open to the most experienced competitors while Rally2 is available to any rider not yet considered RallyGP. With his recent victory, Brad will now compete in the next Dakar Rally in the RallyGP class.
Speaking after the event, Brad, who shares his passion for the sport with his father, the ex-KTM factory rider, Alfie Cox, said:
“Coming in I was down eight points and while there was a chance to be champion, really the week had to fall perfectly for me and it did. From the start, I had my goal set and put my head down, knowing that for the next five days I would do whatever it takes to win – and that’s what happened! Every day I got better and better.
“Having the title ‘World Champion’ next to your name is great, and I’m really proud. Proud of the effort it took and the sacrifices to get to this point. It’s not just me, it’s my team, my family, my sponsors…it’s a massive group effort and to have it payoff is amazing. Now we get ready for Dakar. This is a building block and has given me the confidence, and hopefully, Dakar can go as well as this week has!”
Commenting on Brad’s performance, Bart van der Velden, the BAS World KTM Racing Team Manager, said,
“It was great to see that all the training and hard work he’s put in over the last few years has paid off. In the past year-and-a-half, Brad has taken big steps in his navigation and his training. It’s been a lot of effort so everyone in the team is really happy for him. I’m confident in the upcoming Dakar. Morocco was a test – the first outing on the new bike – and we’re all so happy it worked out.”
Earlier this year, Brad competed in the Dakar Rally, which was described as one of the most challenging races on record, where he put on an impressive performance in the Rally2 category, finishing 13th overall in the Bike Category. He was also the only South African to make it to the Top 20 overall in the contest.
Brad was able to compete with the help of generous sponsors who were committed to backing his racing dream. These included Toyota Gazoo Racing, ASP international rope access, Bas World KTM Racing Team, Leader Tread, Trollope Mining, Face First Media, PSlaser Racing, KTM South Africa, Airoh Helmets, Gaerne Boots, Shot Racing, TRP Distributors, 100%, USN, USWE, and Red Bull.

Grahamstown, South Africa (15 October 2024) – Tseke Masemola, a talented matriculant at St Andrew’s College, has left an indelible mark on the school’s music department.
With his melodious voice and unwavering commitment, Tseke has become a shining example for his peers.
The young man received the headmaster’s special award for being a committed, consistent and reliable member of the school’s music department throughout his time at St Andrew’s College.
In Grade 8, he joined the Chapel Choir, and at the end of his Grade 9, Tseke auditioned for and was selected as a member of the prestigious Chamber Choir.
“Tseke is a vocalist of an advanced level, and he has demonstrated his vocal ability and standard as a soloist on numerous occasions, not only as a member of the Chamber Choir but also with 150 choristers and orchestra members at occasions such as Speech Day,” says According to St Andrew’s College educator Belinda de Villiers.
Beyond his vocal skills, Tseke has also been instrumental in the successes of the choir, including achieving gold at the ATKV Applous Choir competition twice and being announced runner-up at the National Sing In Harmonie Choir competition in 2023.
Throughout his tenure with the Chamber Choir, Tseke has been one of a few senior boys who have remained committed to the Chapel Choir.
He has played a vital role in the marimba band, organising successful performances and leading by example.
“In the Chamber Choir, Tseke has consistently been an outstanding role model and has unfailingly offered moral support to his fellow choristers.
“These attributes were expanded on when he was elected Head of Chamber Choir at the end of his Grade 11 year, and even more so when the choir went through a period without a conductor earlier this year,” De Villiers adds.
Tseke, despite being a talented and dedicated young man, has never undergone any training in running practices or conducting a choir. It was never anticipated for him to assume this role – he did so entirely through his own initiative.
The school acknowledges and congratulates Tseke on his unfailing commitment, exceptional skill, and hard work, which he has demonstrated to the Chamber Choir, the Music School, and the music in Merriman House throughout his high school career.

Johannesburg, South Africa (11 October 2024) – Welcome to the inaugural edition of my Friday Five, where I’ll be giving a shoutout to five things I think you NEED to check out right now — from binge-worthy series and unmissable movies to albums you should have on repeat, books that will take you on an emotional journey, and exciting places to visit.
This is a weekly series I’m launching to share all the good things making waves in entertainment and lifestyle, so let’s dive into the very first edition! Think of it like me inspired by Barry Ronge, but I’m that oke from My Kitchen Rules (who likes to attend events) and is influenced by BookTok and my Apple Music algorithms.
With Halloween just around the corner, it’s only right that I throw some horror picks into the mix.
Both of these movies are available to rent on AppleTV, GoogleTV, Prime, and more.
A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara: Now, let’s talk books. I’m currently reading A Little Life by Hanya Yanagihara, and it’s one of the most powerful yet heartbreaking books I’ve ever come across. I’ll be honest: it’s not an easy read. The story dives deep into themes of trauma, friendship, and survival, and at times it’s absolutely gut-wrenching. While I’d recommend it for its beauty and emotional depth, be prepared — this is a heavy one. It’s a book that stays with you in every page you read.
If you’re in Johannesburg and looking for a new spot to try, let me point you towards Paradiso in Montecasino. This restaurant is quickly becoming a local favourite, and for good reason! The vibe is energetic, the food is phenomenal, and the cocktails? Next level. Whether you’re planning a night out with friends or just looking for a great place to unwind, Paradiso has you covered.
And while you’re at Montecasino, do yourself a favour and catch Rob Lake’s magic show at the Teatro. It’s running right now, and let me tell you — his illusions are mind-blowing. It’s perfect for a fun night out!
View this post on Instagram
That wraps up this week’s Friday Five! I hope I’ve given you plenty of inspiration for your weekend — whether it’s a new series to binge, a spooky movie to watch, or an exciting place to visit. Let me know what you think, and feel free to share your own recommendations with me in the comments.
See you next week for more good things!

The post Ruda Landman Redefines Retirement: A Life of Purpose, Growth, and Giving Back appeared first on Good Things Guy.
]]>
Johannesburg, South Africa (11 October 2024) – Retirement is often seen as a time to slow down, but many South Africans are proving that this chapter of life can be filled with purpose, growth, and a drive to make a difference.
One of those individuals is Ruda Landman, whose story is both inspiring and full of positivity for others entering this phase. When people share their personal journeys after stepping away from their careers, it offers hope and encouragement to others, showcasing that life beyond work can be just as fulfilling, if not more.
Ruda Landman is a name that rings familiar to most South Africans, thanks to her long-standing role as a journalist and presenter on Carte Blanche, one of the country’s most-watched investigative television shows. For many years, Ruda was the face of hard-hitting stories and in-depth interviews, earning her respect and recognition nationwide. But while her time in front of the camera may have ended, Ruda has embraced life after Carte Blanche with the same energy and determination that made her a household name.
Recently, Ruda was a guest on The Rocktirement Podcast series, created by Circle Senior Living, where she shared her thoughts on ageing, personal growth, and giving back to the community. Her appearance on the podcast is a perfect reminder that retirement doesn’t have to mean retreating from life—it’s an opportunity to find new ways to contribute and enjoy the world.
The Rocktirement Podcast is a fantastic initiative that highlights inspiring seniors, encouraging listeners to rethink outdated notions about ageing and retirement. In a country where many people face uncertainty about their later years, hearing stories like Ruda’s can help shift perspectives and create a sense of optimism.
As a key part of the conversation, Ruda reflected on her iconic career and her well-honed skill of “listening with my skin.”
This ability to deeply connect with others served her well during her time on Carte Blanche and continues to guide her now. She may no longer be in the limelight, but her intuition and commitment to living fully remain as strong as ever.
“Don’t put me in a box just because I’m older,” Ruda said during the interview. “I’m still the same person I always was.”
Ruda’s post-Carte Blanche journey has not been without its challenges. Like many, she faced moments of doubt and self-reflection.
“Who am I really if I’m not that person anymore?” she pondered during the podcast.
But instead of slowing down, she’s taken this time to rediscover herself and explore new avenues for personal fulfilment.
One of those avenues is her involvement with the GRAD initiative, which supports first-generation university students in South Africa. These students, who often can’t turn to family for academic advice, find guidance through GRAD. Ruda, who is deeply passionate about education, finds immense joy in helping these young individuals navigate the complex world of higher education.
“It’s a privilege to give back,” she says, demonstrating that her commitment to making a difference didn’t end with her television career.
Ruda also remains physically active, playfully sharing that she works out with a TheraBand and has abs that “a 17-year-old would be proud of.” Her focus on staying mentally and physically sharp while also enjoying life’s pleasures—like a good glass of wine—paints a picture of balance and well-being that many can aspire to.
Perhaps one of the most touching aspects of Ruda’s current life is the close bond she shares with her son, Johannes. She describes him not just as her child but also as a friend and trusted confidant. This deep connection reflects her ongoing belief in the importance of relationships and how they continue to grow and evolve, no matter what stage of life you’re in.
Facilitated by Gidon Novick, a visionary in both the hospitality and aviation sectors, this podcast series serves as a platform to celebrate individuals who continue to live vibrant, purposeful lives even in their later years.
Novick explains, “It has already been such a privilege to not only meet but really delve into the minds of these South African icons… Life doesn’t stop when you reach your later years—it is there to be lived to the fullest.”
Through the podcast, Circle Senior Living offers a new narrative—one that challenges the stereotypes around ageing and empowers seniors to pursue their passions, stay active, and give back to their communities. This is exactly what South Africa needs: uplifting stories of people like Ruda Landman, who show us that life is meant to be lived fully at any age.
So, for those thinking that retirement means fading into the background, think again. As Ruda Landman reminds us, “Age is just a number,” and life is an endless journey of discovery, growth, and giving back.

Global (09 October 2024) – James Blunt has a brilliantly dry sense of humour and while he is incredibly talented in the music department, he also has wit and constantly leaves people giggling.
He has started a challenge to get his album ‘Back to Bedlam’ back on top of the charts and if it hits #1, he will legally change his name to whatever the most popular suggestion is.
“Wanna ruin my life? If the 20th Anniversary Edition of my album “Back To Bedlam” re-enters the charts at number 1, I will legally change my name – to whatever you guys decide. There have been some interesting names suggested, but personally, it’s James Beige for us. That one earned a hearty chuckle. Another goodie was Yerb Eautiful. James even put up a recommendation of his own… “Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Pop Star Four Chord Song Machiney?”
Since sharing the challenge, he has been having fun on social media, sharing his famed dry humour in all sorts of funny ways.
