Springbok loosehead lock, Eben Etzebeth’s record-breaking accomplishment as the national rugby team’s most-capped player was a testament to his enduring legacy and a moment of personal pride for his best friend and captain, Siya Kolisi.

Mpumalanga, South Africa (30 September 2024) – Their talent and shared love for rugby have formed the most heartwarming Springbok bromance of our lifetime! Whether it is on or off the field, Siya Kolisi and Eben Etzebeth’s friendship, support, and shared banter easily leave us inspired and smiling silly as South Africans.

This past weekend was no different, as it shone a spotlight on their bond following Etzebeth’s recording-breaking 128th Test appearance for South Africa, making him the most capped Springbok player of all time!

The victory was a full spectacle during Saturday’s game against Argentina in a Rugby Championship title decider at Mbombela Stadium.

According to eNCA, the 32-year-old forward broke the record set by his former second-row partner Victor Matfield, who won 127 caps between 2001 and 2015.

The emotional outpouring from the crowd, his teammates, and most notably, his best friend Kolisi, highlighted the profound impact he has had on South African rugby.

Recognising the invaluable role that Etzebeth plays on the team during a media briefing, Kolisi expressed how grateful he was to have him as a best friend and a leader on the team.

“My brother, I’m so grateful that I’ve walked this journey with you and I’m grateful that you’ve been part of my life. Thank you for supporting me from the first day Coach Rassie made me as captain. You had my back.  We’ve been together since we were 18 years old. You’ve always been by my side,” Kolisi said.

He admired Etzebeth’s leadership and contribution to the team as well as the family man he was off the field.

“I am so proud of you, I’m so grateful to be your friend. I can’t wait to tell my grandkids that I played with Eben Etzebeth. Cheers, my brother I love you.”
