All Cornelle wished for ahead of her wedding day was the chance to see her husband waiting for her at the aisle. In a story encompassing romance, unity and proudly South Africa support, this bride-to-be has gotten the wedding gift of a lifetime: her sight!

Berlin, Germany (30 September 2024) — Most brides tend to have a few requests and wishes before their big days. But one South African bride-to-be named Cornelle Leach had a unique wish that no wedding registry could hold a candle to: the gift of seeing her soon-to-be husband on their wedding day.

Cornelle has Stargardt’s Macular Dystrophy. It’s a debilitating retinal disease that has made her centrally blind to the point that she had 0% vision—meaning she’d never actually seen her fiancé before.

The two have navigated life through Cornelle’s struggle. For her, Russel’s been the guiding light of her mind’s eye.

“Amid the darkness, I found a beacon of light in the form of love,” Cornelle says.

“I am blessed to have found the man of my dreams, Russell, who sees beyond my impairment and stands by my side unwaveringly.”

When Russel’s family discovered Fedorov Vision Restoration Therapy, an institution in Berlin that could help Cornelle, magic and miracles married.

The institution could be the one that gifted Cornelle her sight again—no sure bet at the time, but a damn good one.

Cornelle started a crowdfunding campaign on BackaBuddy to rally support for her chance. Even though she knew it might not work, she placed her bets on hope.

As the word spread, her story caught the attention of the likes of renowned local fashion designer, Gert-Johan Coetzee and famed comedian, Schalk Bezuidenhout.

Gert kindly offered to make Cornelle’s wedding dress and encouraged support for her while Schalk got to sharing the ‘bride to see’s’ story (his apt reference to Cornelle) with his own audience and as many people as possible.

What had staggered in support soon became a whirlwind of it, and by August, the institute for her treatment was paid for and the flights to Berlin, booked!

Both Schalk and Cornelle simply couldn’t believe how quickly South Africans responded to the call for support. In a matter of days, the impossible had become its counterpart.

“I have never been so proud to be a South African,” Cornelle shared.

“It was the effort of a lot of people giving the little amounts of what they could,” said Schalk.

In the update South Africa had been waiting for, Schalk met up with Cornelle in Berlin on the last day of her treatment in late September—an encounter they attribute to fate since he just happened to be in town for a show.

There, Cornelle revealed the incredible news that the treatment was a success! Moreover, it had even started working earlier than anticipated, doubling the amount of active cells in her retina already. The biggest joy of all? She got to see her love for the very first time.

“It has made such an impact on me and I don’t have words to express my gratitude because it’s not everyday when a girl can get her sight back or at least get the opportunity to,” Cornelle said in reference to everyone who helped her, near and far.

We’re sure her wedding day on 11 January will be the happy ending to a story that certainly deserves its own movie. But it’s also a one-of-a-kind reminder that sometimes truth isn’t just stranger than fiction, it can also be far more beautiful.

South Africans are being called to send love and uplifting messages to 12-year-old Harry, the sole survivor of a tragic car accident, to help him heal through the power of community support.

South Africa (08 September 2024) – When heartache hits, South Africans are never far from one another. In times of crisis, our spirit of unity and compassion rises above, transforming sorrow into a powerful support force. Today, our nation is being called upon to channel that spirit of kindness and love for a young soul-survivor named Harry, who needs our encouragement more than ever.

Recently, a tragic social media post by Sarah Corlett has begun circulating, capturing hearts nationwide. In her heartfelt post, Sarah shared the devastating story of the Finnemore family — Gareth, Olivia, and their two sons, Garth and Harry.

Last Saturday, their lives were forever changed when a driver allegedly overtook a truck on a blind rise along a rural road in KwaZulu-Natal, causing a catastrophic accident that involved 13 people. Twelve did not survive, including Gareth, Olivia, and 14-year-old Garth. Miraculously, 12-year-old Harry emerged as the sole survivor.

The news of this unimaginable loss has struck a chord, prompting an outpouring of love and compassion. People from near and far have rallied to support Harry, who is still recovering in the hospital. Amidst the heartbreak, a beautiful moment of kindness has already touched Harry’s life — a message from South African rugby star Jesse Kriel, which, according to Sarah, “really boosted his spirits.”

Inspired by Jesse’s gesture, Sarah reached out to us at Good Things Guy with a heartfelt plea: “Brent, I need your help, please! Harry received a message from Jesse Kriel, and it brought a smile to his face. He’s still in ICU, but he’s going to be okay. However, the road ahead is tough. His mom’s sister, Lexi, mentioned that any messages from cricket and rugby players would be amazing, but honestly, I think it doesn’t have to be just celebrities. Imagine what a few heartfelt messages from anyone could do for a 12-year-old boy facing such unimaginable pain. I’d love to get a few messages to him.”

Sarah’s request is a call to all of us. Yes, messages from celebrities can be uplifting, but the truth is that each of us has the power to make an impact. Whether you are a world-famous athlete or an everyday hero, your words of support can bring light to Harry in this dark time.

So, we’re asking you — our incredible Good Things Guy community — to do what you do best: send your love, encouragement, and strength to Harry. Write something meaningful and show this young South African that he is not alone, that there is a whole nation standing with him, cheering him on as he heals both physically and emotionally.

While nothing can truly fill the void left by the loss of Harry’s parents and brother, the collective support from people around the country and the world can help to ease his pain, one kind word at a time. Together, let’s wrap Harry in a blanket of love and support. Let’s remind him that there are countless people who care, countless hearts that are holding space for him. In moments like these, our strength as a community shines the brightest. So, take a moment today, write a message, and be a part of something truly special.

Remember, it doesn’t take a celebrity to make a difference. It takes a human being with a heart full of compassion.

Leave a message in the comments or send one to messagesforharry@gmail.com. We will make sure all messages are sent to Sarah to deliver to Harry.

“To Harry, with love from the Good Things Guy team, while the path ahead may feel difficult and uncertain, please remember that you are not walking it alone. Thousands of hearts are reaching out to you, filled with love, prayers, and gentleness. We’re all here, holding you in our thoughts. Know that an entire country is lifting you up, surrounding you with care, and sending you all the warmth and comfort it has to give.”

South Africa, let’s rally together, one message at a time. Let’s show Harry just how powerful love and kindness can be.

Several Olympians made their time in Paris that much more special by opting to take the excitement from the podium to the aisle! Here are the athletes who added wedding bells to victory cries:

Global (16 August, 2024)—Amid the many famed perfumes that hail from Paris, the most popular scent known for perfuming the air in France’s Capital is love. After all, Paris is nothing if not the City of Lights—especially those that glow in our hearts for another. For a handful of Olympians, love competed with podium moments at the recently concluded Paris Olympic Games, with the news that several athletes decided to get engaged and begin their new aisle dreams.

According to multiple sources, the number of proposals that took place was its own record for the Olympics. Some athletes decided to get down on one knee after standing tall on the podium. Others were met with congrats and proposals from their non-competing partners after their moments in the sun. And others were couples competing for wins simultaneously who chose to make a victory of love all their own.

Here are the athletes that were inspired to take their relationships from the Games to the aisle!

  • America’s Justin Best (a gold-winning rower) who got down on one knee after claiming his victory:

  • American shot put athlete Payton Otterdahl who decided it was time to start wedding planning:

  • Argentina’s handball team player Pablo Simonet proposed to women’s hockey’s Maria Campoy in the first Olympic Village proposal:

  • China’s Huang Ya Qiong (a gold-winning badminton player) who got engaged to fellow badminton star Liu Chen in a moment that stole the world’s hearts:

  • France’s Alice Finot (a world record-breaking walker) who proposed to her love:

  • French Skiff Sailors Sarah Steyaert and Charline Picon added engagement rings to their bronze medal wins after their victory as their partners proposed to the duo!

J’Something and Cordelia’s genuine affection for each other shines through every interaction, making them a beloved and admired duo.

Johannesburg, South Africa (14 August 2024) – The lead singer of the award-winning MiCasa, J’Something isn’t one to shy away from expressing just how much he loves and adores his wifey, Cordelia Fonseca.

Being loved out loud and appreciated is a profound blessing that nourishes the human soul. It’s in the tangible expressions of affection, the spoken words of affirmation, and the genuine acts of kindness that we find a deep sense of belonging and worth.

The South African singer, songwriter, producer, cook and a super dope human being – as he likes to refer to himself – shared a sweet post on Facebook gushing about how he admired the bond he shared with his Mrs.

“I love that I can’t define never mind try explain “us” … I just know it feels good, I know it’s worthwhile, I know that I’m content, I know that It gives me a thrill, I know it gives me a challenge, I know that today I am so grateful to have you in my corner and honoured to be in yours,” the musician wrote.

The chemistry that lives between this couple is evident in their laughter, bright faces, shared love for food and enjoyment of each other’s company in various posts and videos online.

J’Something also reflected on 13 amazing years of friendship with Cordelia, affirming that his relationship with her was one of the best decisions of his life.

“In the same breath, one of the greatest gifts I’ve ever received has been YOUR time. I can’t picture a day without you in it. Not a day, not an hour, not a second.”

There is just no denying that Cordelia has found a true romantic in J’Something and she doesn’t need to wait for Valentine’s Day to be showered with love and all sweet things. Their beautiful relationship is an inspiration to witness and we cannot help but admire what they share from the sidelines!

In its 11th year, Khumbulani Pride renewed calls for justice for victims of hate crime

Cape Town, South Africa (21 May 2024) — More than 150 people with rainbow flags and colourful costumes marched through the streets of Gugulethu and Nyanga at the weekend to mark the 11th year of the Khumbulani Pride.

Pamela Jack joined the march in honour of her son Lonwabo Jack who was gay and who died in 2021 in Nyanga East in what is believed to have been a hate crime.

“I miss my son so much. My first-born was everything to me. I just want us to live in a world where we support our children no matter what, and where our children are not killed for their sexuality,” said Jack.

Marchers held up a large banner commemorating the life of Lonwabo Jack. His body was found with stab wounds in Mau Mau, Nyanga East in April 2021.

According to his mother, a 17-year-old was arrested, but the case was eventually removed from the court’s roll with no further explanation given to the family.

Jack told GroundUp, “I am proud to be part of Khumbulani Pride. I feel supported because this is the community my son belonged to.”

Nozuko Ndlwana joined the march in honour of her sister Phelokazi Mqathanyawho was lesbian and was stabbed to death in May 2021 in Khayelitsha.

The march on Saturday was organised by Free Gender and the Triangle Project.

Talking to a packed room at Zolani Centre, one of the founders of Khumbulani Pride, Funeka Soldaat said, “Each year brings a sense of sadness and excitement. It’s sad because we are reminded of those we have lost, some in the most brutal way, and exciting because we get to celebrate this community. If we are united, we can do so much.”

Khumbulani – meaning “Remember” in isiXhosa — was started in 2013 to raise awareness about queer rights in townships across Cape Town and to remember and victims of hate crime.

The group walked from the Zolani Sport and Recreation Centre in Nyanga through NY78 in Gugulethu, before returning to the Nyanga police station and then the Zolani Centre.

At the Nyanga police station, the group handed over a memorandum to a police officer who promised that station commander Lindiwe Dyantyi, who was unavailable at the time, would receive it.

They demanded to be updated about the case of Noxolo Nkosana who died after being stabbed in June 2011 in Crossroads, and that of Phumeza Nkolonzi “who was shot three times in front of her grandmother in Mau Mau in Nyanga” in 2012.

The Zolani hall was decorated in rainbow coloured curtains. A memorial wall with banners, posters and news articles was dedicated to victims of hate crime.

February tells us about all kinds of love. But one of the most misunderstood, is self-love! We all love self-care Saturdays, but the self-love journey is about a lot more than just that.

Global (04 February 2024) — February is the month of love (at least, in every commercial sense), but it’s also something even better: another month. Another month to choose yourself. Another month to learn about yourself. To try again. To try something new. To look inward a little more, and see just how much your outer world changes because of it. Another turn on the journey of self-love that might just be the most important turn you take.

The journey of self-love is a book that many have claimed to have written. But ultimately, it is not one that has any kind of typical format. The chapters are going to be inconsistent. The character-development doesn’t come when you expect it. And the big spoiler: it does not have an ending. So why would anyone go on such a confusing adventure?

Because unlike most books where the author writes a set story, in the self-love journey, the character can change it at any time through perspective. Self-love is one of the greatest tools we have in shaping how we see our stories.

There’s a lot about self-love that seems enchanting. Buying yourself flowers as if you were in a relationship with you IS a dopamine rush. Choosing your peace over people-pleasing too has a great ring to it.

But the reality of the self-love journey lies beneath all of this. And if this is a journey you’re going to go on, here’s what you need to prepare yourself for:

Your Self-Story Won’t Be an Easy Write

The self-story is, very simply, the story we are telling ourselves about ourselves. Constantly. It also happens to be one of the most important travel companions on the self-love journey; just like any great book should be.

But, if we are constantly telling ourselves we are not enough, useless, unlovable, broken or unintelligent, we are also telling our confirmation bias (a way our minds filter important information) how to view the events of in our worlds. What perspective to give these happenings. And through this, we might find ourselves picking parts of the story that fit (you guessed it) the toxic self-story.

So, what if we did the opposite?

It takes a lot of work to break out of years of beliefs and mindsets. But our minds are not set in stone masterpieces. If the self-story starts to change, so too do what our minds look for in the world around us to once again, affirm the new story and new beliefs. It doesn’t happen in a microwave minute, but with enough consistency, the change cooks.

Thought Check-Ins Count

How we speak to ourselves decides a lot of what we think of ourselves. And in turn, the way we view our lives. Which shifts the way we live our lives. This all begins with our thoughts. And not necessarily what they are, but how we react to them.

Taking all of our thoughts on as truths is a one-way ticket down the mountain slope. They are complex constellations, and fascinating at times, but by no means universal truths. Sometimes, they are not even our own opinions, but a voice of those who have influenced us for the better or worse.

We’re constantly being shaped by all the stimulus we absorb every single day, which, when you think about it, is exhausting in the ‘did I really just run 10 kilometres the wrong way’ kind of way.

One of the toughest parts of the self-love journey is to get to the root of how our self-story is formed, which is also an exercise, but one that runs in the right direction.

Thought check-ins don’t need to be long and elaborate. They simply mean allowing a thought to pass and instead of reacting to it immediately, taking a moment to check in, instead. Is the thought helpful or harmful? Is it helping you write the self-story you need to write? What purpose does it serve?

Of course, you can’t do this for every single thought you have. But for the big ones, the ones that evoke emotion, it can make all the difference because you’re taking your power back.

The Tea on Accountability

Let’s get out of our heads for a moment. Say we’re working on our self-stories and checking in on our thoughts. We’re replacing negative views of ourselves with accepting ones. Positive ones. Understanding ones. But what about when we take away the shame and fears and realise, objectively, that we were wrong?

Self-love is not a get-out-of-jail-free card for behaviours. In fact, the people who have been on the road of inner discovery for a long time know that the highest form of self-love is being able to be accountable without getting tangled up in spirals of emotional messes.

On the self-love journey, we have to give to ourselves what we expect from others. This means, if you expect someone else to think about their actions and make a matter right, but refuse to do the same for them because you ‘love and forgive yourself’ you’ve gotten the message confused. You can love and forgive yourself while still stepping up and making something right. You can set boundaries whilst taking on accountability and knowing that you too, need to respect the boundaries of others.

Self-Care Looks a Lot Like Being a Parent

Every part of the self-love journey is a form of parenting yourself. From unlearning the mindsets of others or your own self-sabotaging ways to making sure you eat your greens and take care of the body that’s housing your self-story and thoughts.

Being responsible for yourself is a huge part of self-love. What that means, isn’t simply doing what you want because it makes you happy. But doing what you need that will make your journey gentler and happier for the long-haul. Spa Days are great. But so is making sure you go on a walk for the day and making that a habit. Taking time for yourself is important, but keeping in touch with people, even on the days you don’t feel like it, also matters.

The self-love journey is balance. And oftentimes, doing what you don’t feel like doing if it aligns with your new self-story. If that story looks like someone who is healthy, has good relationships and is working toward their dreams, you’ve got to fill in the pages. And by mastering your relationship with your thoughts, you allow that story to exist without resistance.

All of these points alone aren’t the answer to self-love. But they are some of the right questions. And by starting here, in this month, in this time while flowers circulate and chocolate hearts fill up shopping cards, you’re giving yourself a gift no one else ever can.

A few days before their wedding day, a Gauteng couple faced a frightening fork in the road when the soon-to-be husband was in a car accident. Determined to honour their promise of commitment to one another, the pair got the hospital’s ward to play host to a wedding:

Springs, South Africa (14 December 2023) — Hospitals have almost always been a space of paradoxes. Health and hope battle illness and fear. And stress and relief live in the same rooms. But, they’re also usually a place—alongside airports—where love can be so abundantly evident. The latter was the case for a couple from Daveyton who decided to choose commitment over ceremony and opted to marry on the day they had promised to each other.

Godfrey Maboi and Paulinah Moghale had arranged their wedding date for 10 December 2023. It was a day they’d both been looking forward to as they finally geared up to take their biggest steps as a couple together after a 28-year-long love story.

But on 02 December, Godfrey was rushed to hospital after a terrible car accident. Bedridden and in a bad way, he would’ve missed the day he and Paulinah had been planning for ages.

Then something really special happened. The Far East Rand Hospital in Springs decided that they could have their wedding in Godfrey’s ward (largely thanks to the couple’s determination to see their wedding day through).

Instead of best men and women, they had hospital staff members. Instead of their family and friends smiling faces in person, they got to see it all through video calls. Instead of ceremony being the main focus, commitment was.

Even MECs like Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko caught wind of the special gesture, and shared that the couple’s is a story of inspiration for others who face unforeseen challenges. She added that “irrespective of the obstacles one encounters in life, there is always a way.”

In a world where so many are more focused on how their wedding will look on Instagram than the actual commitment of the affair, this Gauteng couple reminded South Africans that a little substance and sticking to a commitment is the most important ingredient to any real love story. And indeed, that where there is love, there is always a way.

Tatjana Schoenmaker and Joel Smith have officially tied the knot and become South Africa’s own Mr and Mrs Smith!

Cape Town, South Africa (09 November 2023) — Time has flown since Olympian swimmer Tatjana Schoenmaker and her love, Joel Smith (who is also rugby first lady Rachel Kolisi’s brother) got engaged in a fairytale moment atop Table Mountain in April.

While both anticipated their big day and joked about finding the fast-forward button so they could get to it sooner, time answered quickly and the pair have officially tied the knot.

Now they’re donning new titles, becoming South Africa’s very own Mr and Mrs Smith.

While South Africans brainstorm new nicknames for ‘Schoenies’ who had a big year in her swimming career—she made title history in a first for our country, and swam her fastest time since the Tokyo Olympics amongst many other podium moments–the mermaid couldn’t be happier to have her new name shared with Joel.

Taking to social media, the newlyweds shared their snaps of joy against the backdrop of the Cape Winelands over the weekend.

Now the worlds of swimming and rugby in South Africa are a little more united, and it’s definitely giving the romance crossover we’re all rooting for.

Meanwhile, in other tying the knot good news, our hearts are very warm from the coolest news of couple Carli and Paul who won the “Love on Ice” competition as featured on Good Things Guy. They are having their dream wedding in icy Antarctica today!

Straight out of a romance film, a man decided that a simple bouquet wasn’t enough to celebrate his relationship’s 50th wedding anniversary. So, he planted a really big one, gifting his wife an entire field of sunflower dreams.

Kansas, USA (06 August, 2023) — Lee and Renee Wilson have been married for 50 years. Traditionally, folks call this the ‘golden anniversary’ and boy, did Lee take that literally in an act of love that will likely find its way into a romance film.

Thinking sunflowers and their warm, golden tones would be a good start, Lee didn’t stop at a simple bouquet. The Kansas farmer opted instead to plant a field of sunflower dreams so that Renee could walk through over a million sunflowers or 32 hectares of sunflower love.

Adding even more romance to the sunflower dreams, Lee reportedly made Operation 50th Anniversary happen secretly; with help from his son. Since May, they’ve been planting sunflowers left right and centre field so that the sunflowers could bloom right on schedule.

Luckily, Kansas is known for being particularly favourable to the flower, with weather well-suited for the romantic gesture that’s taken the internet by storm.

In fact, people were so moved by what might be the most wholesome anniversary gift of the year, many have travelled to see it in person (and we can just imagine the couples’ conversations on the way home).

So, if you’re settling for someone to text you back, think of Lee and remember that hopeless romantics do still exist in the world! And we think that’s a really good thing.

After over two decades together, a couple’s wish to have their wedding finally happened thanks to romance-loving South Africans.

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (20 June, 2023) — When a man phoned a local radio station to dedicate love songs to his person, South African romantics’ ears perked up at the story of the longtime sweethearts.

It all began with a call to Vuma FM in May when radio presenter Jacinta Gobese asked her audience to dedicate love songs to their people.

One Nkosinathi Hadebe had requested four songs for his person — Zandile Cele, which made the presenter curious to learn more about their relationship.

When Jacinta found out they’d been together for around 23 years but hadn’t tied the knot, she began to think aloud on air.

“How is it possible that they’ve been together for so long?”

Curious to find out why they had never decided to marry, Jacinta pressed for more of the story. The simple questions led to a bittersweet answer, with Nkosinathi explaining that despite the couple wanting to get married, on his salary as a security guard putting money toward a wedding was no small change.

Jacinta again wondered if there wasn’t a way to bring the dream to reality and soon South Africans answered with a resounding ‘yes!’.

Kindness wasted no time to show up after the story’s traction on air and social media.

Donations, offers to take them on holiday, and more generous offers came rushing in. Among them was an early ‘wedding gift’ from viral philanthropist, Bi Phaketi.

All of these efforts helped speed up the wedding planning and possibilities. Less than a month later, Nkosinathi and Zandile’s wedding invitations were sent!

On 17 June, the longtime sweethearts finally said their vows in a wedding that stole KwaZulu-Natal’s hearts along with the rest of the country.

The ceremony, dubbed a ‘provincial wedding‘ saw community members from all over contribute to all the details that make a wedding magic—from flower bouquets to the entertainment.

Name a more wholesome wedding; we’ll wait!
