Better Fourways, a community-driven initiative, is transforming Fourways through active citizenry and collective action, inspiring residents to take ownership of their community’s future.

Johannesburg, South Africa (18 April 2024) – The state of the nation and the challenges we face can sometimes make us feel overwhelmed but stories like “Better Fourways” give us hope today for a better tomorrow.

Born from the powerful realisation that “no one is coming to save us,” this community-driven initiative is redefining what it means to take active citizenship to the next level.

Inspired by the successes of organisations like “Tidy Towns” and “Better Bedfordview,” Better Fourways is a shining example of what can be achieved when passionate individuals come together for a common cause. Founded by Susan Harwood and Raffi Carnicelli, two dedicated community members who are deeply committed to restoring Fourways to its former glory, this registered, apolitical, non-profit organisation is truly a force to be reckoned with.

Funded by the generous contributions of residents and local businesses, Better Fourways is making tangible improvements to the community’s landscape. From cleaning up litter and maintaining public spaces to fostering a sense of pride and belonging among residents, their mission is clear and ambitious: to make Fourways a great place to live, do business, work, play, shop, go to school, exercise, and socialise.

“We are making it a suburb that we can all safely and happily enjoy and be proud of,” says a spokesperson for Better Fourways.

But what sets Better Fourways apart is its unwavering belief in the power of collective action.

As Raffi Carnicelli eloquently puts it, “If we want to fix what is in our immediate suburb, we are going to have to do it ourselves. If we are going to wait, I am afraid that ship has sailed, has probably sunk. We are going to have to redeem ourselves. If you want to stay and be positive about South Africa then this is the message I think that we need to get out there: we need to do it ourselves… and we can… because there is power in numbers.”

Recently, Susan Harwood and Raffi Carnicelli had the opportunity to share their inspiring journey on the Good Things Guy podcast. They discussed how Better Fourways is already making a significant difference in Johannesburg and encouraged others to join their cause.
