For the first time ever, The Earthshot Prize is set to be held in South Africa. And, travelling across the pond for the prize-giving in Cape Town? None other than the Prince of Wales—Prince William!

Cape Town, South Africa (04 October 2024) — It was a massive deal when it was announced that Earthshot 2024 will be held in Cape Town—a first for South Africa. Now, as Earthshot Week approaches, the City is rallying all its royal etiquette to welcome the Prince of Wales himself to town.

Not just heading across the pond for the better weather and scenic views, Prince William is actually the founder of Earthshot—the biggest opportunity for innovative environmental enthusiasts to share their solutions to the Earth’s most pressing problems.

Every year since it began in 2020, the Earthshot Prize has focused on 5 key elements, namely:

  • Protect and restore nature
  • Clean our air
  • Revive our oceans
  • Build a waste-free world
  • Fix our climate

Throughout the year, nominees are screened and narrowed down. This year, early 400 nominees hailed from Africa, while just 15 have been identified as finalists. In good news for our continent, 3 of the finalists are African.

At the prize-giving, five finalists will win £1 million (over R23 million) to help them effect their eco-solutions.

Cape Town can’t wait to play host to yet another exceptional series of events, especially those which will change the world.

As Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis shares:

“We look forward to welcoming the Prince of Wales to Cape Town for this prestigious global prize-giving ceremony. The Earthshot Prize is all about innovation on the biggest environmental and climate issues of our time. We are proud to be associated with such an event as a leading city for environmental protection and innovation on the African continent.”

Earthshot Week will take place in November, while prize-giving will take place on 6 November 2024.
