A Grade 5 South African student’s love and courage has united a community to save his little poisoned pup!

Johannesburg, South Africa (23 August 2024) – Dogs have long been hailed as humanity’s most loyal companions, offering us unconditional love and unwavering friendship. But sometimes, it’s not just the dogs who prove their loyalty—it’s the humans who stand by them in their darkest hour.

This heartwarming story of a young South African student, Kenneth, and his brave efforts to save his beloved pup, Litah, has touched the hearts of an entire community.

Megan Toni Couchman, a dedicated advocate for the KyaSands community, has been at the forefront of uplifting lives through her involvement in “Kya Craft“. This incredible initiative provides employment opportunities to women in the area, allowing them to support their families with dignity. Over the years, Megan has not only connected with these women but has also formed bonds with their families and pets, witnessing firsthand the deep connections between them.

One of these connections became a powerful reminder of the bond between humans and their dogs.

Kenneth, the son of one of the entrepreneurs from Kya Craft, experienced a terrifying ordeal when his best friend, Litah, was poisoned. After returning from school, Kenneth called out to Litah, but his beloved dog was too weak to respond. In a moment that would have broken many hearts, Kenneth gathered his sister and two friends, and together, they carried Litah in a crate to the Blue Bush Animal Clinic, a place known for its compassion and care.

“Little Litha was carried to us in a box this evening by a very caring little boy,” shared a post from the Blue Bush Animal Clinic.

“He has been well cared for despite his owner’s circumstances and is already sterilized and vaccinated. Tonight he is fighting for his life after having been poisoned. Thank you to every client that refuses their change, adds a little extra to their bills or deposits into our rescue fund if able. It means that we can continue to take these cases every day.”

Kenneth’s emotional journey didn’t end at the clinic. Megan, who happened to be at Blue Bush that day, recounted the heartbreaking scene in a Facebook post.

“Today, I popped into Blue Bush Animal Clinic to get some meds for Lola, and I saw Kenneth in tears with his dog on the table. His precious dog, his best friend, was poisoned. When Kenneth got back from school, he called his dog, but there was no response. His poor furkid could not even lift his head.”

The situation was dire. Litah was severely dehydrated, suffering from gastritis, burns throughout his digestive system and muscle spasms caused by the poison. Despite the overwhelming odds, the Blue Bush Animal Clinic team rallied around Kenneth and Litah, offering to treat the pup at cost price. However, the financial burden of such treatment was still daunting for a grade 5 student.

That’s when the power of community came into play. Megan, deeply moved by Kenneth’s plight, reached out to her network for help.

“Now friends, this is where we need your help,” she wrote. “If it is R50, R500, or even R5—if we all band together, then we can ensure that we can pay for all of the medical expenses of this precious dog.”

The response was nothing short of extraordinary. Donations began pouring in, and the community’s support lifted the spirits of both Kenneth and Litah. The next day, Megan shared the good news: Litah had made it through the night.

“You can see the pure excitement of all three of them when they were reunited this afternoon at Blue Bush Animal Clinic. These kids could not stop grinning and giving Litah all the hugs he so deserved,” she wrote.

Litah’s recovery is ongoing, and while the full extent of the poison’s impact is still unknown, the overwhelming love and support from the community have given Kenneth hope. The team at Blue Bush Animal Clinic continues to monitor Litah’s condition, ensuring he receives the care he needs to overcome this ordeal.
