The Lunchbox Fund and the Development Bank have committed to providing meals to Zandile Mtungata’s organisation.

East London, South Africa (21 October 2024) — Last month GroundUp reported how a woman in Duncan Village, East London, was making a huge effort to daily feed dozens of children in her community. Zandile Mtungata told us at the time:

“When people come asking for food, whoa, I am happy I see the joy and hope. Because I am their hope, I am their hope.”

But Mtungata was battling. For one thing, she needed a new stove. She complained of receiving very little assistance from government to provide food.

Following our article an organisation called the Lunchbox Fund in partnership with the Development Bank of South Africa (DBSA) committed to providing over one million meals until the end of 2025 to Mtungata’s outreach programme, which she calls Healing of Broken Souls, and Inenjongo, an after-school homework tutoring project also in Duncan Village.

Lunga Schoeman, programme manager for corporate social investment at the DBSA, stated:

“From October until December 2025, a total of 1,099,440 meals will be served, ensuring that these children receive nourishing, warm meals daily.”

On Tuesday, Mtungata told GroundUp the food had not arrived on Monday, 7 October, as was stated in the email to GroundUp. This was reported to the fund and a day later the delivery was made.

Mtungata says she was visited a while ago by a representative of the fund and signed documents.

She was also visited for the first time by an official from the provincial Department of Social Development and encouraged to register her organisation at their offices in East London’s CBD four kilometres away.

“But I don’t have the money to go up and down,” she said.

Support has also continued with meals and a microwave from local evangelist Matthew Peake of Helping Those in Need.

The simple act of feeding a homeless person ten years ago sparked an entire movement known today as Ladles of Love. Thanks to that one kind decision, a nation has been nourished, over 41 million meals have been shared, and even world records have been broken!

Cape Town, South Africa (16 September 2024) — When we’re in the midst of making a kind and selfless decision, we can rarely know how far down the line that choice will travel. The domino effect of kindness isn’t always obvious, but it’s almost always real. And for Danny Diliberto, that domino effect has encompassed ten years of one of South Africa’s most admirable feeding programmes—Ladles of Love.

Ladles of Love is celebrating ten years of beautiful work this month, none of which would’ve happened if Danny hadn’t offered a simple bowl of soup to a homeless man a decade before.

It was in 2014 that Danny, with the help of a chef and some volunteers, decided to make the act of feeding the homeless a common practice. As a restauranteur himself, Danny became determined to use his resources to the best of his ability and create a restaurant for the homeless. Soon, the first soup kitchen took form.

Today, Ladles of Love has established 160 community kitchens, helped many survive lockdown, has served over 41 million meals, made record-breaking amounts of sandwiches and has expanded to encompass other avenues of support, including helping young minds through the Munch Club, running the Essential Groceries drive and lending a ladle to other non-profits.

“That first gesture has grown into a movement that serves nearly a million meals each month across the Western Cape, Northern Cape, and Gauteng,” reflect the team.

So, the next time you think a small act of kindness won’t be worth much, consider that it might just be the first ingredient for something much bigger, something that might just feed your inspiration and something that might just change the world.

You can support another ten years of nourishment and become a love activist with Ladles of Love here.

Feeding organisation PSFA has served in excess of two billion meals since they began their mission 66 years ago, and now they’ve cooked up a new menu to serve even brighter futures!

Western Cape, South Africa (19 July 2024) — For 66 years, the Peninsula School Feeding Association (PSFA) has been living up to its mantra, ‘You can’t teach a hungry child,’ by putting meals on the table for thousands of learners each and every day and ultimately serving brighter futures.

Since beginning in 1958, the feeding-focused organisation reports that it has delivered and cooked in excess of two billion meals to close on 200 education institutions in and around the Western Cape, serving brighter futures with each child supported. In fact, given that excelling in education and good nutrition often go hand-in-hand, it’s safe to say that PSFA isn’t just serving students’ individual futures but also the future of a better-educated South Africa as a whole.

However, serving brighter futures requires a readiness to adapt and improve wherever possible. That’s why today marked a special day for PSFA who, for the first time in 16 years, have given their menu a makeover!

While the new menu still includes the staples including samp, rice, sugar beans, soya, pilchards in tomato sauce, fresh veggies and fruits, it’s been spruced up for the pilot phase with a variety of seasonal vegetable and fruit with new preparations including noodles, chicken livers, soya variants and raisins.

New Menu Goodness Breakdown

According to an analysis of the new menu by public health and nutrition consultant Helen Donkin, here are some takeaways from the new menu:

  • The new menu has improved energy distribution properties from all macronutrients (meaning less from carbs and more from protein and healthy fats)
  • There is also improved protein RDA (recommended dietary allowance) by 7-14%, now meeting 23-31% of the protein requirements for the different age groups
  • Additionally, the menu is high in healthy fats like omega-3 fatty acids and fish oils EPA, DPA and DHA
  • Minerals have been improved most notably for primary school age groups in iron, magnesium, copper, iodine and selenium meeting over 40% of RDA.
  • Not to mention, vitamin A and vitamin B12 now meet over 100% of the RDA

“Although RDA differs for different age groups and between genders, our meals have been analysed by nutritionist Helen Donkin in terms of the macro and micronutrients, minerals and vitamins,” says PSFA Director Petrina Pakoe.

Simple Staples Serve Brighter Futures

Celebrity chef and PSFA ambassador Zola Nene showcased just how delicious the menu’s simple staples can be, adding her own creativity to the mix for those present at the new menu’s launch.

Taking to share just how much PSFA means to her, Zola shared:

“The work that PSFA does is incredible. They are not simply serving a plate of food to thousands of school children in the Western Cape but are changing lives. I feel privileged to be part of a solution to alleviating hunger.”

Celebrity Chef Zola Nene

The Proof is in the People

For Petrina Pakoe, who is herself a product of the school feeding programme, the value of these efforts cannot be understated.

“I know what it’s like to go to bed hungry and the value of that daily meal,” she says. “I am who I am today thanks to PSFA. I wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for them…but it goes beyond a simple plate of food, it is about making sure the meals are filling and nutritious. Adequate nutrition is essential for the growth and development of children and to help combat malnutrition and related health issues.”

All of this goodness is only made possible by the many hands behind the scenes working hard to serve brighter futures, and you can be a part of it too—find out more here.

When a canoe club realised that children were lagging in competitions due to poor nutrition, a community of parents stepped up to make a heartwarming difference!

Johannesburg, South Africa (14 July 2024) — Sometimes the biggest impact comes from everyday people who simply decided to add a little relief, lighten a load, and make the road ahead (or in the case of Dabulamanzi Canoe Club, the dam ahead) less trying for those around them.

For the past three months, the Gauteng water racing scene has been abuzz with activity as the Dabulamanzi Canoe Club shares. From the buildup to the SA Sprints followed by the exhilarating Gauteng Marathon Series to the 2024 SA Marathon Canoe Championships, it was a long 12-week stretch of racing, which the SCARC Team showed up to time and time again; participating in every race and ultimately claiming the biggest club entries for most of the races.

Every Thursday evening for six weeks after the time trials at Dabulamanzi, the SCARC trailer would be loaded with boats while the bus prepared to collected teams from their homes around Soweto as early as 4:30am; causing great excitement for the children as a signal of the weekend starting.

However, a few days into the Marathon series revealed an observation—the team was not doing well. The Dabulamanzi Chairman spoke to a couple of the children to find out more, and came to discover that the reason for the team’s lag was not a lack of skill or effort, but that the children’s nutritional needs were not being met. This to the point that some were even enduring degrees of very low blood sugar.

After some brainstorming sessions, it was agreed that immediate action needed to be taken for the children’s overall well-being.

While the SCARC had a Race Nutrition drive, it needed funding. Ridge Parents came to learn of the double-whammy dilemma and didn’t hesitate to help out. After a final meeting, the Ridge Parents put on their hero capes for the Canoe Club and raised funds so that a proper nutrition plan and meals could be prepared!

Soon, special breakfast and lunch packs were available from a local food store so the children would be able to access a healthy start to the day and a meal after their race.

But, this was only the beginning of even more change! A programme where 230 SARC family members receive a monthly food parcel is running thanks to Dabulamanzi member Sean Martin and a company focused on health who are funding the programme for the year ahead!

Outside the Bowl Africa and Samaritans Feet SA have teamed up for a big initiative that aims to help 67 000 children with toe-to-tummy essentials! Meet the “Food for Soles” Project:

South Africa (28 June 2024) — NGO Outside the Bowl Africa and Samaritans Feet SA have united for an epic collaboration—the “Food for Soles” initiative set to launch on Mandela Day this year!

With Samaritans Feet’s passion to ensure more children have footwear and the dignity that comes with it alongside Outside the Bowl’s determination to feed the next generation, the project is tackling two challenges in one ambitious shot.

“Food for Soles” aims to address the needs of homeless and underprivileged youth across South Africa by providing 67 000 vulnerable children with toe-to-tummy essentials, including shoes, socks, and access to nutritious meals.

“The need for this project is urgent and profound,” says Loren Erasmus, the Executive Director at Outside the Bowl Africa.

“In South Africa, many children walk long distances to school, often without proper footwear, which affects their health, education and overall well-being. Lack of nutritious food further exacerbates their struggles, leading to issues such as malnutrition, stunted growth, and impaired cognitive development. By addressing these basic needs, the Food for Soles project hopes to create a foundation for these children to build better futures.”

So, what will it take to achieve the ambitious goal? The teams behind the initiative believe that with enough collective effort, awareness, and R67 donations, 67,000 children will certainly feel the positive impact that will last them far beyond Mandela Day on 18 July.

Additionally, if corporates are looking to get involved, their support would be warmly welcomed.

The call for community kindness is on, and you can make donations either here or here with your reference as ‘[your name] 67k’.

Looking for more ways to do some good this Mandela Day? You can check out our growing list of initiatives here.

In our kind of get-together, a group of friends united over jars and hope to create jars of hope for hungry children in KZN:

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (02 June 2024) — In our kind of get-together (and a must-do for anyone feeling charitable this winter), Tanith King and a group of her friends made the most of their time in each other’s company by creating jars of hope—a lifeline for hungry children.

With empty coffee jars in tow, the group of friends packed the jars with essential spoonfuls of nutrients that many children in KwaZulu-Natal sadly go without on a day-to-day basis.

Their jars were created for Project Hope SA, a non-profit based in Hillcrest who are doing their part to help add relief to the struggles children in the province face.

“The children that we share our jars with are the ones that are really struggling. They don’t eat supper and they don’t eat breakfast. Their families are living in extreme poverty and are unable to provide [for] them. they have no choice but to see their beautiful children suffer. Hunger grips their little tummies and the distress that they witness is heart wrenching,” shared Project Hope SA.

The team said that the jars of hope made by the group of friends are an answer to their weekly prayers.

What Are Jars of Hope?

Other organisations like Doorway to Dignity also use Jars of Hope as a clever and compact way to help communities get their necessary nutrients.

The jars are made up of different ingredients ( like soup, lentils rice and stock cubes) that can be poured into a pot with water. The meal is then cooked and can feed up to four people, and even more children.

Those looking to help Project Hope SA can get in touch with them via info@projechope.org.za. Whether it’s a positive addition to a hang out with friends, a community event or even done by an individual who happens to have a lot of jars to make use of, there are few things that make winter warmer than a heartwarming act.

As winter sneaks up on South Africa, the time to get involved in activities that warm our hearts while alleviating the harsh weather’s woes on the destitute is all the more welcomed, like lending a hand at Ladles of Loves Dignity Kitchens!

South Africa (22 May 2024) — While many of us have already started experiencing the winter blues in colder parts of the country, those living on the streets are facing much more than bouts of winter-induced melancholy. There are many ways for people to warm their spirits as winter comes knocking, with volunteering to lend a hand to organisations who rely on this kind of support at the top of our list.

Ladles of Love’s Dignity Kitchens in Cape Town and Johannesburg are known for serving nutritious meals that lift spirits and remind destitute men, women and children that sometimes hope looks like a hearty meal.

But, the Dignity Kitchens rely on people willing to lend a hand to keep doing the great work they do. And as it so often is in the face of the cold, the more helping hands there are, the merrier the toughest season for destitute people can be.

Those looking to get involved with Ladles of Love Dignity kitchens can get involved here; by volunteering either your time or donations to help make this winter warmer—from the heart to the tummy.

What are the Dignity Kitchens and How Can I Lend a Hand?

Ladles of Love’s Dignity Kitchens began in 2014 on a cold night in July. There, a small team of volunteers came together to cook and serve 70 meals to Cape Town’s destitute. It marked the beginning of a place for people to go that offered not only nourishment, but kindness.

“It’s about more than feeding the hungry. It’s about breaking down the social barriers that exist between us, and connecting people regardless of their gender, colour, religion, or social status. We’re building the nation we know we can be,” share Ladles of Love.

Volunteers lend a hand to different tasks, from setting up the serving stations to serving food and managing the queues.

You can find out more about the Dignity Kitchens here!

Meanwhile, in other Ladles of Love news, people are readying themselves for Nelson Mandela Day to help the team break another world record, and everyone is invited.

The Human Rights Commission has recommended that child malnutrition in the province be declared a disaster

Eastern Cape, South Africa (17 May 2024) — It’s about 3 pm in Cwebeni, a small village near Port St Johns in the Eastern Cape, and children and their mothers are lining up for what might be their only meal of the day.

Over a wood fire, four massive cast iron pots are filled to the brim with umngqusho (samp and beans), vegetables, and rice. The children are served first while their mothers wait their turn on the grass.

The community-run soup kitchen is supported by a new organisation called iThemba Kuluntu. The organisation aims to tackle the hardships caused by poverty, unemployment and government neglect across six villages in the area.

In Cwebeni alone, they serve between 400 and 500 meals a day, according to one of iThemba Khuluntu’s founders, TJ Hanneman. A handful of women volunteer their time to cook about four times a week.

Hanneman says local shop owners in Port St Johns donate some food, and food security organisations such as SA Harvest have recently come on board.

After the food was served, about 40 food parcels were distributed to families.

“This food plays a big role for our children because some of them go to sleep at night without food in their stomachs,” says volunteer Nomsa Mtholi, a 31-year-old unemployed mother of three. Hers is among the many families in the village who survive on a child support grant of R530 a month: according to Nosalathiso Petshana, a director of iThemba Khuluntu, very few people in Cwebeni have income outside of social grants.

With little prospect of finding employment, life in Cwebeni is very hard. Villagers complain about a lack of basic services. They say they have been forgotten by the authorities.

The organisation feeds between 400 and 500 people a day, several times a week.

In March, the SA Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) visited the village following “distressing complaints” of human rights violations in the area. Among the complaints reported was severe malnutrition and starvation.

Ntombizoxolo Gqetywa lives with 17 relatives who all survive on four child support grants. Towards the end of the month the family struggles to feed everyone. “Sometimes all we are left with is mielies. Sometimes nothing, just salt and oil,” Gqetywa told GroundUp.

In November, the SAHRC published an alarming report on child malnutrition in the Eastern Cape, which it said should be declared a state of disaster in terms of the Disaster Management Act. The SAHRC also called for the national and provincial governments to be compelled to intervene immediately, and for the child support grant to be increased above the food poverty line, currently at about R1,058 a month.

A hearty meal for lunch will be served every day to the hungry and homeless during the merry month in Cape Town thanks to the Feed5000 initiative!

Cape Town, South Africa (08 December 2023) — When we think about the merry month, dreams of delicious dinners and foodie feasts with family and friends emerge in the privileged mind. But, the striking contrast between what is an expected treat for some and an unexpected lifeline for others, unfortunately, becomes all too apparent as the season further unwraps.

Is there hope? But of course.

While for the striking numbers of homeless and destitute people in our country the idea of getting any meal—let alone a hearty one— is a gift in and of itself, their hope is not futile.

In Cape Town, several feeding programmes and schemes work hard to make what should not be a gift, but a given—food—available as often as possible. However, during the merry month, many of these providers close, meaning that finding food does become a problem for those who rely on these services.

However, the Hope Exchange, which regularly feeds the City’s homeless and stands as a bright yellow beacon of (you guessed it) hope on Roeland Street, are an organisation who are not going on break without a plan of action!

Thanks to the #Feed5000 initiative they’ve teamed up to do alongside Ladles of Love, their promise is to serve delicious lunches every single day from 14 December to 15 January.

“The Hope Exchange does not like to have anyone feel that they have been forgotten when the rest of us might have a table under a roof to enjoy time with our nearest and dearest,” the team shared.

#Feed5000 is an official feeding programme that aims to provide over 12,000 meals to the homeless community. With Ladles of Love in their corner, they predict that even more meals than this will be on the cards.

Right now, the initiative is looking for volunteers to help prepare and serve the food. To deal with the national pickle of food prices, they’re also encouraging anyone who can sponsor R250 will be able to feed one person for the merry month until the end of #Feed5000 in January.

Other ways to come to the party include making ingredient donations or sponsoring a day. You can find out more about all the ways to make this scheme a roaring success, here.

Tons of nutritious food was delivered in KZN’s Babanango with the help of some trusty food handlers— Sharks Players!

KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa (05 September 2023) — On a different kind of tour for the rugby greats, Sharks players Tinotenda Mavesere, Muller du Plessis and Sharks Director of Rugby Neil Powel spent a day delivering nutritious food across rural areas in KZN’s Babanango.

Putting the heart back into the heart of KZN (Zululand), the feeding effort is much more than just a day for the Sharks players and the communities they served. This effort is part of a bigger initiative that sees the Sharks Foundation and Hands of Hope unite with SA Harvest, the national food rescue and hunger relief organisation.

Together, their mission is to deliver essential food items to the underserved rural areas of Zululand, committed to making sure these remote regions are not forgotten in the fight against food insecurity.

Two 8-tonne trucks filled with essential food supplies travelled over 200kms to reach the remote Babanango Game Reserve; delivering an abundance of harvest goodies.

The ‘harvest’ consisted of 3 tons of carrots, sweet potatoes and cabbage, 500 kg of maize meal and 500 kg of mixed tinned beans and pilchards on each truck, set to provide 10,000 meals worth of crucial sustenance to vulnerable families in the region.

Beyond the tons of food, seeing the Sharks players off the field came as an added treat!

About SA Harvest

SA Harvest is taking a revolutionary approach to ending hunger by addressing the systemic causes through innovative technology, while simultaneously tackling the immediate need through the all-important solution of rescuing nutritious food and delivering it where it’s needed most.
