For 10 years, the Nuts & Bolts Rally has united petrolheads to put their wheels to the test for charity. In celebration of this decade-anniversary, drivers are making this year’s rally extra-epic, including ‘wild-child’ dad Tony Brand (a 77-year-young man on a mission), who hopes that he and his jalopy will make a huge difference.

South Africa (18 October 2024) — At 77-years-young, Nicci Brand’s ‘wild child’ of a dad, Tony, has embarked on a monumental road trip around South Africa as part of the ever-epic and charity-driven Nuts & Bolts Rally!

A rally for charity that’s been revving engines since 2014 as founded by Pieter Andersen, the Nuts &Bolts Rally’s mission was established both as a fundraising opportunity and as a metaphor for the experiences charities face.

Like time spent on long road trips where roads are often fierce, a charity’s journey is fledged with unpredictability, bumps, and countless moments wondering whether the fuel will see them through to the next pitstop. But, as anyone who has been on an epic road trip knows, so many of the challenges are evened out by good company—exactly what the friends of the Nuts & Bolts Rally hope to be to their selected charities.

Ballies, in their jalopies, have united time and time again to support worthy causes through their quirky wheels. This year, they’ve tackled various Rallies from April that have seen them take to the Garden Route, Northern Cape and the Western Cape.

But, for their decade anniversary, they’re tackling a biggie. It’s a mission brimming with adventure for the participants—golden-hearted petrolheads. Their hope, once all engines are off and the job is done, is that they each would’ve raised significant funds for four charities: the United Cerebral Palsy Association of South Africa, the Smile Foundation, CHOC and Goldilocks and The Bear Foundation (GB4ADHD). And they’re doing it through a road trip around South Africa!

Enter Tony Brand, AKA the Brandpa. The elder participant (and the only one who hasn’t faced mechanical issues, he might add), Tony, is driving his VW Kombi 6,450 km across South Africa to quite literally rally support for the aforementioned charities.

His hope is to raise R50,000 in sponsorships to support children facing a spectrum of challenges across our country.

Rally participants are booked to reach the end of their adventure at the end of the month, as Nicci shares, with Cape Town as their end-point. Here, their cheques will be handed over, and the making a difference part of the long drive can begin!

Those looking to add a little jet fuel to Tony’s mission can make donations in the following way:

Bank: FNB Malmesburg

The Ride of a Lifeline fundraiser has successfully galloped to an impressive end, raising just under R50,000 to help support vulnerable and abandoned babies in the care of Breath of Life!

East London, South Africa (17 October 2024) — Last month, an initial disappointment turned into a heartfelt adventure that has ultimately made a significant difference for East London-based non-profit, Breath of Life.

Initiated by longtime supporter of the NPO, Nisha Varghese, who is no stranger to rallying support for worthy causes across a spectrum of fields, the original idea was for Nisha to take to horseback for a fair distance as part of the ‘Ride of a Lifeline’ effort that would support the vulnerable babies in Breath of Life’s care.

However, when Nisha learned that she wouldn’t be able to ride as part of her effort without a special saddle, given her Cerebral palsy, a brief moment of disappointment ensued.

That’s when Tom and Tori Horse and Heart—a horseback riding centre in Chinsta West—galloped to the rescue and decided to ride on Nisha’s behalf!

Tom and Tori, Horse and Heart riders, rode 22 km to Cefani and back to rally support for Breath of Life. As of this week, we now know that the support rallied was just under R50,000!

Nisha shares that Breath of Life has been sent a total of R47,943,30—funds to help them buy baby care supplies and cover their operating costs.

“There are no words in the dictionary to describe how grateful I am to each of you who showed up for my children,” Nisha said in a heartfelt thank you post.

Breath of Life will now have some financial peace of mind as they continue to provide a safe space for abandoned or abused babies until these little tots find their forever families.

The Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital have helped tens of thousands of indigenous animals for free over many years of impact! This spooky season, they’ve got a delicious fundraiser on the cards that anyone who loves pumpkin carving won’t want to miss.

Johannesburg, South Africa (16 October 2024) — For over seven years, the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital has helped tens of thousands of animals free of charge.

The first facility in South Africa to treat and rehabilitate the endangered Temminck’s pangolin and the team who have given many indigenous wildlife creatures a second chance—especially in cases of poaching or where animals have been a part of the wildlife trade—the impact of their work cannot be understated!

This October, the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital have carved out a clever fundraiser to support their hospital and continue the life-changing work they do. If you’ve ever wanted to carve a pumpkin creatively or do so as tradition; this is your sign to grab a pumpkin and get carving for a cause!

JWVH are inviting everyone who wants to support their work to carve either a spooky or cute pumpkin. The top 3 pumpkin carvings will win themed cakes for any spooky season celebrations; while the animal patients in their hospital will get to enjoy a pumpkin treat!

Everyone who enters will purchase a ticket at R100 (the fundraising portion of the gig) and one ticket permits one entry. Any kind of pumpkin variant is welcome. Once the carving is all done and you’ve taken a photo, drop off the pumpkin at the Johannesburg Wildlife Veterinary Hospital (101 Macgillivray Road, Midrand) between 9 am and 2 pm during the week, before 29 October at 5 pm when the entries close for the patients to enjoy.

Winners will be announced on 30 October and the top pumpkin creators will get to enjoy their cake winnings on 31 October onward; just in time for any Halloween-inspired parties.

You can secure your entry spot here, and don’t forget to email a photo of you with your pumpkin’s final look to info@jwvh.org.za!

A boogie by the sea during sunrise. Yoga to kickstart the day. And, headphones all to yourself through it all. Not only will an upcoming sunrise session in Camps Bay start the morning off in epic fashion, but it’ll also directly support South Africa’s beloved elephants at HERD!

Camps Bay, South Africa (30 September 2024) — If a beach boogie coupled with doses of yoga, good music and headphones all to yourself at sunrise sounds like your version of the best party (and morning) ever, then consider yourself invited to an extra special Secret Sunrise session, set to be held in support of the elephants of HERD (Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development).

The HERD team are preparing for a fantastic early start on 19 October in Camps Bay as part of one of the coolest fundraising events to support their Jabulani Herd.

They’ve organised a sunrise bash for their elephant-loving community in Cape Town with hopes that the big day will raise imperative funds for their solar campaign.

On the cards are yoga, dancing, music, connection and community all inspired by their sunshine elephant, Khanyisa, the beloved albino rescue, who has stolen hearts across the world and recently celebrated a biggie—her fifth birthday!

While the actual elephants will be quite a drive away rocking their own sunrise in another part of the country, they’ll certainly be with every sunrise attendee in spirit. After all, all the proceeds from the event are heading straight to HERD’s solar campaign, which will provide sustainable energy for the team to care for its Jabulani Herd at all times.

Details:

  • When: 19 October, 6am-7am
  • Where: Camps Bay Beach
  • Tickets: You can grab your tickets here

If a wholesome morning filled with pilates and puppies sounds like your kind of Saturday, then this event to support animal welfare organisation The WOW Project is one to add to your calendar!

Milnerton, South Africa (29 September 2024) — Most of us know pilates as an activity of endurance, peace, and perhaps (if we show up enough times) the secret to those killer abs we’ve been yearning for. But this weekend, pilates lent itself to another cause even sweeter than abs—puppy love!

Pilates for Puppies hosted a wonderful event as part of a fundraising and donation drive for The WOW Project.

The WOW Project is an animal-focused organisation close to many hearts in the Western Cape. Run almost singlehandedly by its founder—Melkbos local Kerry Kleinhans—WOW’s work in animal outreach does not go unnoticed across the province. From organising veterinary help to serving food and shelter needs and even providing help in exhausting weather conditions, Kerry and her little team of volunteers know a thing or two about doing the most with the least.

So, where does the pilates come in? Since WOW’s work is entirely reliant on donations, the team decided to enact another unique fundraiser filled with cuddles, exercise and of course, puppies.

The events are open to anyone who’d love to join an hour session of pilates with adorable puppies present (dream day, anyone?).

All of the puppies (who may or may not be pilates powerhouses themselves) are up for adoption at the events. Take a look at some of the wholesome photos from past events below:

To join next time, follow them here.

Years ago, Anschi Wilsnagh changed the life of a dear dog named Oscar, who once led a life with no sunlight and only had a stone to play with. Now, Anschi’s on a mighty mission to better the lives of all the animals she can’t take home with her and is climbing Kilimanjaro to make it happen.

Mount Kilimanjaro (17 September 2024) — Years ago, Oscar the dog’s life couldn’t have been more different to what it is today. And if it wasn’t for the humans who stepped up for him—Rescued Animal Drive (RAD) and his forever home found in Anschi Wilsnagh—he may never have found his happy ending.

But Oscar’s life did change from the terrible conditions he once faced, like being chained, experiencing no sunlight, and only having a stone to keep him company to the point where he lost all his teeth.

Anschi welcomed him into her home and now he lives happily with his family that includes other animals like Bruce the rabbit. Even though Anschi can’t take all the animals in need in Grabouw home, she’s determined to make a difference where she can.

As such, she’s on a mighty mission for animal welfare and is climbing to the greatest heights to do it.

Anschi is climbing Kilimanjaro in a very practical manifestation of just how far she’s willing to go for animals need. She has already begun her mission; meaning all the funds she raises are heading straight to RAD.

“Every step we take together is a step towards a better world for animals who deserve a chance at a happy and healthy life,” says Anschi in response to why she decided on this ambitious stretch.

RAD, a non-profit serving animals in the Overberg area, have shared great admiration and excitement for Anschi’s climb.

“She obviously has no reception but she has an Apple tag on her so we can see where she is! What an amazing endeavour and we are honoured and grateful that she chose to raise funds for RAD.”

“All donations will go toward our sterilisations for September,” the RAD team add.

Anschi has already raised over R30,000 for the cause, and anyone moved to help her move this mountain can support her mission here.

A special outing took children from the Juno Aurora Children’s home to Sci-Bono; made possible thanks to a lot of heart and a few guilty pleasures that made for an epic fundraiser by the Sandton Ladies Circle:

Sandton, South Africa (30 July 2024) — Several children from the Juno Aurora Children’s Home recently got to spend a day brimming with curiosity at the Sci-Bono Discovery Centre in Johannesburg thanks to the community-focused Sandton Ladies Circle and guilty pleasures paying off.

For any child, a trip to Sci-Bono offers an enriching experienced where magic is revealed as science and technology offers a glance into the future. But for the youngsters of Juno Aurora (who are not privy to experiences like this on a whim by any means) it was an extra special treat that broadened minds and ignited a new flavour of excitement.

A renowned educational space known for its interactive exhibits and curiosity-inducing energy, the outing was made possible by the Sandton Ladies Circe, who raised funds for the occasion through a Gin and Cupcake Tasting event (who said our guilty pleasures can’t do some good?).

The day was said to be filled with hands-on experiments, engaging demonstrations and interactive workshops with a standout activity being the moment the children came together to build the African continent as a puzzle which thrilled the children, opening their eyes to the world in a new way that made them feel more part of it than ever.

Casey Mantle of the Sandton Ladies Circle shares, “We are incredibly proud of the positive impact we’ve made. Seeing the children’s excitement was truly rewarding and highlights the difference we can make through community efforts. We look forward to making an even bigger impact in our communities, so please stay tuned to our socials to find out how YOU can help with our upcoming projects.”

You can keep up with the SLC, here.

The 2024 Cableway Charity Challenge was a ‘shout from the mountain tops’ success that surpassed the R1 million mark in funds raised!

Cape Town, South Africa (13 June 2024) — In a peak of good news for several charities and all those who gave Table Mountain their all, The 2024 Cableway Charity Challenge was a ‘shout from the mountaintops’ success that surpassed the R1 million mark in funds raised!

Every year, people prepare their legs to trek up the mountain route as many times as they can (and in whichever way they can—from jogging to running and if push comes to shove, crawling). This year, Platteklip Gorge saw a total of 716 summits from sunrise to sunset, with a total of R1,271,742 raised by the determined participants.

It’s the kind of challenge that gets the adrenaline pumping not just because of the endurance you need to lock in with, but also because of how much change you know that extra push might permit.

This year, Greg McLeroth raised the most funds (a new record) with a whopping R133,500 earned for his efforts. AJ Calitz and Nina Campbell achieved the most laps for the male and female categories respectively, with AJ scoring 9 laps and Nina tackling 7. AJ was also named the 2024 King of the Mountain, while the Queen of the Mountain title went to Jana Van Houwelingen.

This is now the second year in a row that the Cableway Charity Challenge has surpassed the R1 million mark.

Meet the Beneficiaries Who Will Be Supported by the Funds

This year, the following charities have been nominated as beneficiaries who will receive 10% each of the event proceeds.

The balance of the funds raised will head to:

  • Ndihluthi –  serves one pot, cook and eat bags (Ndihluthi meal bags) to underprivileged Cape Town communities so they can enjoy nutritious meals.
  • Abalimi Bezekhaya – a non-profit urban-farming organisation that helps disadvantaged communities and individuals with skills to produce their own food, which many can use as an income.
  • Funda Kunye – equips caregivers of babies and little children with vital development and education skills necessary for growth.

Years ago, an idea to spend 24 hours in a kennel with hopes of raising funds changed the fate of the Kloof and Highway SPCA for the better. Ten years on, the team celebrated their 10th Dog Box Challenge—which also happened to be a tail-wagging success!

Kloof, South Africa (12 June 2024) — Who knew being put in the ‘dog box’ could be such a life-changing thing? Taking a wholesome spin on something usually associated with being in the thick of trouble, the Kloof and Highway SPCA have turned the term into an opportunity to change multiple animals’ lives, and they’ve been at it for a whole decade.

10 years ago, the very first Dog Box Challenge was held, where the aim was to have 24 people spend 24 hours overnight in (the then) half-build socialisation kennels. At the time, their goal was to raise enough to complete the building process and if enough support was in their favour, offer more animals shelter.

Well, many years have passed and the Dog Box Challenge has done a lot more than build a few kennels!

Thanks to incredible support, people who have voluntarily been “locked up” for the cause have made a wealth of difference in the lives of animals.

From making sterilisations and treatments possible, to helping fund court matters prosecuting animal cruelty, supporting outreach clinics and, of course, making caring for the animals much easier, it has become a time on the calendar that the Kloof and Highway SPCA team know they can count on for all the heart-driven work they undertake.

“Over the last 10 years the Dog Box has grown exponentially and become an annual fundraiser that is loved by many, taken part by many and supported by thousands of people over the past decade!” the SPCA shares.

This year marked the Challenge’s 10th anniversary at the end of May. Much to the animal heroes’ delight, it was a tail-wagging success of an occasion that raised a whopping R 312,795.04!

“What we see when we look back over 10 years is successful teamwork with passion and empathy and lastly, when we look back, we see our supporters who have been with us since day one,” the team add.

The fantastic news comes a little after Kloof and Highway SPCA Operations Manager Sarah Van Heerden cycled her heart out over 7 days and raised her own small fortune for the people and paws she works with daily. You can read all about Sarah’s cycle here.
