Glenrose Xaba rocked the road on Sunday in a record-breaking way! Her debut Cape Town Marathon saw the athlete crowned champion of the race while setting a new course and national marathon records in the process!

Cape Town, South Africa (21 October 2024) — Cape Town roads were filled with a kaleidoscope of sneakers, cheers of enthusiasm and songs of endurance over the weekend. It was thrilling to watch as the sea of runners charged forward, one foot in front of the other, even when everything in their bodies told them to give it a rest (you could actually see some legs shaking in protest). While each had their own reasons for participating in the Cape Town Marathon, some were gunning for the big leagues, like champs’ titles and record-breaking moments. For Glenrose Xaba, both of these feats would soon be achieved in a feat of road-rocking moments!

South Africa’s Glenrose claimed the Women’s win with a time of 2:22:22. Thanks to her, a South African got to stand on the top tier of the podium (the men’s title went to Ethiopia’s Abdisa Tola for a time of 2:08:16). Not only this, Glenrose set a new record both for the course and for South Africa’s marathon history; taking the baton on from Gerda Steyn’s previous record which was a time of 2 hours, 24 minutes and 3 seconds.

This was Glenrose’s debut Cape Town marathon, too. But, to be fair, she is the current South African 5,000 and 10,000 metre and 10km road record holder, with an obvious knack for long-distance dominance.

Nonetheless, it’s still remarkable that she achieved the feat on her first go around the Cape Town Marathon route. Moreover, her win was one of resilience, considering the relentless winds that ensued over the weekend.

“I didn’t want to say before the race, but my goal had been the course record,” the champ shared before adding that she was shocked to have broken both the course and national record.

“I’m humbled to have taken Gerda’s South African record.”

Sarah Winkelmann has signed up for her first marathon—the Cape Town Marathon—in a big effort to raise awareness and support for South Africans living with diabetes!

Cape Town, South Africa (22 September 2024) — In October, Sarah Winkelmann will tackle the Cape Town marathon on a mission beyond personal achievement: raising funds and awareness for South Africans living with diabetes.

Around 4 million locals live with diabetes. Yet, it is still a somewhat nuanced condition clouded by a lot of stigma and misinformation.

Inspired by her husband, Naeem Sonpra, who has been living with Type 1 Diabetes since the age of 16, Sarah hopes to make a difference by helping more people live long and healthy lives. And she’s lacing up her takkies to sound the call.

“That’s 32 years of navigating life with a chronic condition that can be relentless at times,” says Sarah of Naeem.

“Yet, he has balanced the challenge with deeming ease and rarely complains. Although he would admittedly say that diabetes has played a part in shaping who he is today, he does not let it define or limit him.”

Managing Type 1 Diabetes is no small feat, especially for those who are diagnosed at a young age. In many cases, family members all feel as if they live with the condition, given its consistent nature.

“Managing Type 1 diabetes on a daily basis requires constant vigilance and careful planning. Every day involves monitoring blood sugar levels, taking multiple daily injections and adjusting insulin doses based on food intake, activity levels, and even stress or illness,” Sarah explains.

“Beyond the medical aspects, there’s an emotional toll which affects the quality of life for people living with diabetes—managing the unpredictability of the condition, staying alert to signs of high and low blood glucose levels, and ultimately knowing that you are never able to “take a break” from diabetes.”

In explaining her journey to advocacy, Sarah says that she was inspired by Naeem’s journey, both for his resilience and its place as a wake-up call.

“I realised that health is a precious gift, often taken for granted. Before meeting him, I hadn’t fully appreciated the importance of taking care of my body. My husband’s journey was a wake-up call. It ignited a spark within me to prioritise my health and to make a difference in the lives of others.”

After teaming up with SA Diabetes Advocacy, Sarah found herself part of a community that inspires and empowers people to live fulfilled lives in the face of health challenges.

“To amplify our message, I signed up for my very first marathon,” Sarah says in anticipation of Marathon Day.

With lots of hard work, discipline and new routines, she’s ready to tackle the roads of the Cape, ring the bell for diabetes awareness loudly and raise funds for SA Diabetes Advocacy which you can find out more about, here.

Toni McCann has once again made South Africa beyond proud after she conquered one of the world’s most renowned trail running feats in first place—the UTMB Mont-Blanc CCC (100kms) on her first attempt!

Global (06 September 2024) — Exactly a year ago today, Good Things Guy shared the fantastic news that local Toni McCann had become the queen of one of the world’s toughest trail marathons. Then, she became the first South African to win the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc OCC that stretches through France and Switzerland, with “just a little bit of bravery” and a ton of hard work.

Now, we’re over the moon and mountain to announce that Toni has made South Africa proud once again after she tackled the 100km UTMB Mont-Blanc CCC for the first time with flying colours, winning the formidable feat from the Alps!

Where the OCC saw a stretch of over 50km in length with an elevation gain of over 3,200m, the CCC is another beast entirely.

With a much sterner length ahead of her, Toni took the CCC at UTMB head-on; claiming first place for women and 22nd overall.

“I dared to dream about the back to back win. To win OCC, and follow it with a win at CCC. It was a dream I hardly dared speak, only to those in my closest circle. We did it.”

Toni adds:

“Things got hard. Things got so hard, and when I thought I couldn’t keep going, they kept me going,” she said of her close circle and supporters. “Thank you. This win is as much yours as it is mine.”

Her former school, St Mary’s DSG couldn’t be more thrilled with her achievement, sharing that “Toni is one of only five people in the world to hold multiple victories in these World Finals.”

The Two Oceans Marathon flew by, leaving behind a trail of achievement-studded results from South African runners! Amid those who made us so proud are Gerda Steyn (who was crowned champ for the fifth consecutive year) and the firefighters who ran fully kitted, purely to make a difference:

Cape Town, South Africa (15 April 2024) — The Two Oceans Marathon has flown by as quickly as the many speedsters in the race; leaving behind a trail of inspiring results for the next cohort of participants. From seasoned champs to newcomers and even firefighters, the 2024 Ultra and Half Marathons filled the City of Cape Town with the kind of enthusiasm that made anyone want to run with pace toward their own dreams.

Holding down her reputation as the Mother of Marathons, Gerda Steyn was this year’s female Ultramarathon victor—for the fifth consecutive time. Not to mention, the seasoned star also beat her own record for the third time; shaving off more than two minutes for her latest showdown. Completing 50 kilometres in a time of 3:26:54? It could only be Gerda!

In the men’s Ultra, it was South Africa’s Onalenna KhonKhobe, AKA the ‘dangerous protagonist’ who dominated the race with 3:09:30 on the clock. A fierce believer in his victory before the fact, Onalenna came, saw and conquered the kilometres, with a brilliant smile as he crossed the finish line.

As for the Halfies, Mokulubete Makatisi from Lesotho soared in first with a time of 1:13:52, while SA’s Thabang Mosiako reeled in the victory count with a time of 1:04:40.

As for crowd favourites who laced up to make an impact, firefighters Jermaine Carelse and Renaldo Duncan cranked up the heat for this year’s Half Marathon stretch. Together, they successfully completed the Half Marathon in a time of 2 hours and 46 minutes, all to raise funds for Volunteer Wildfire Services! Even more heartwarmingly, this year VWS racing buddies Liam Gannon and Steve Akester joined the trek for the cause.

Meanwhile, in other news, where people will put their bodies to the ultimate test—the 2024 Cableway Charity Challenge is just around the bend and has already made steady headway toward creating incredible impact for several underserved communities.

Mother of marathons Gerda Steyn has made South Africa proud again after she conquered an age-old national record at the Valencia Marathon 2023:

Valencia, Spain (06 December 2023) — Gerda Steyn is officially the South African female speedster to have conquered an age-old record of the national history books after a stellar performance in Valencia this past Sunday.

South Africans everywhere know Gerda as a long-distance legend, and her recent run in Spain defended this title yet again.

Gerda finished the Valencia Marathon (almost 43 kilometres) with a National Record of 2:24:03. This was a personal best for the athlete as well as a new era for the record previously set by Elana Meyer’s Boston record in 1994.

“Marathons are all about finding that thin line between your maximum effort for the distance and pushing too hard! You have to be 100% confident in your ability to do the job you set out to do, against all odds!!” Gerda shared of the successful stretch.

She added:

“This running life is not always the easiest, but it is by far the most incredible one, and I can’t thank everyone enough for all the support!”

With a new record under her belt, this recent achievement sits among many other victories, including one from earlier this year at the Comrades, where she broke the women’s times record with a 5:44:4.

Beyond this, the mother of marathons is a 2x Comrades Marathon and a 4x Two Oceans Marathon champion. Her determination, openness, reflective nature and success all afford her the status as one of the greatest runners in South Africa of this generation.

South African Paralympic legend Ernst van Dyk has made his country so proud over the decades, and now he is being honoured in the New York Road Runners Hall of Fame!

Global (27 October 2023) — South African Paralympic legend Ernst van Dyk has been named as one of the new inductees to the New York Road Runners Hall of Fame (NYRR); a nod to van Dyk’s incredible sporting career that has inspired athletes and supporters alike around the globe.

As a two-time New York City Marathon Champion, eight-time Paralympic medalist, the winner of several UCI world championship titles and Boston Marathon wins, Ernst van Dyk knows a thing or two about tearing up a road.

However, becoming one of the world’s most iconic wheelchair marathon racers didn’t happen by chance. Van Dyk’s determination to excel and reframe realms of possibility has been his real driving force for decades—a spirit of tenacity that echoes the essence of both South Africa and sportsmanship.

Born with the ‘congenital absence of both legs’ to athletic parents, van Dyk’s talent in sports was easily spotted from his youth.

He has since gone on to wave the South African flag around the world at every Paralympics since 1992 as the NYRR recalls, reminding people from all walks, sittings and runs of life that pursuing dreams does not always have prerequisites of ability.

Of his recent induction into the NYRR Hall of Fame, he joins Deena Kastor; a marathon record-holder and three-time Olympian.

Kastor expressed that it was an honour to be inducted into the Hall of Fame alongside van Dyk who she has long looked up to and admired.

Speaking of the induction, van Dyk shared:

“This came as a total surprise and I’m profoundly honoured and deeply humbled.

“This induction isn’t about me, it’s about the spirit of perseverance and the belief that every obsacle is an opportunity to redefine what’s possible. I accept this honour with immense gratitude, knowing that it is not an end, but a reminder to keep pushing boundaries and inspiring others to roll forward in the pursuit of their dreams.”

The Comrades Charities List recently got an update for its next 3-year cycle, with two new charities added, including wildlife heroes, SANParks Honorary Rangers!

South Africa (18 October 2023) — The Comrades Marathon might be one of the toughest marathons in the world (unless you consider 90-odd kilometres casual), but it also happens to lend itself to humanity at its softest. This is strikingly apparent not just in the moments of kindness shared between racers and supporters, but also through the Comrades Charities focus, which recently got an update!

For the upcoming race cycles (2024, 2025 and 2026) the Comrades Marathon Association has announced its official charities. These will be the focus of the Amabeadiebeadi Charity Drive which has raised over R71 million since it began 27 years ago.

If you wondered why as many people put themselves through the gruelling feat of chasing pavements at the Comrades level, the answer is usually a sense of purpose.

Sometimes, purpose meets people at individual levels; the drive to prove yourself, to love what you can achieve and to feel a sense of indescribable pride. Other times, it lies in community; the opportunity to create extraordinary change by doing something well out of the ordinary.

The Comrades Charities List helps connect different realms of social impact with those ready to enact a great, gruelling adventure.

Most of the charities are existing charities, while place for two newer charities was also made thanks to the incredible addition of South African Parks Honorary Rangers and Childline KwaZulu-Natal.

SANParks Honorary Rangers are the only charity on the list whose primary focus is conservation efforts, making their mention a big win for South Africa’s wildlife and all those who contribute toward its care.

However, all of the charities make a big difference in their respective realms and deserve as much celebration (and maybe their own caduceus trophies) as the future runners who will fuel their missions further.

And the Official Charities Are:

  • Community Chest of Durban and Pietermaritzburg
  • Childhood Cancer Foundation
  • Childline KZN
  • Hillcrest Aids Centre Trust
  • Rise Against Hunger Africa
  • South African Parks Honorary Rangers

Hard months of training paid off over the weekend after runners completed the Cape Town Marathon, many of them with flying colours! In exciting news for South Africa, a new record was even set for the counterpart races:

Cape Town, South Africa (17 October 2023) — Long, hard months of training, self-motivation and many ‘Am I really doing this?’ moments paid off over the weekend in the City of Cape Town as runners of all skill levels took to the local streets for the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon and its counterpart races.

The weekend was heated (and not just because of good weather) thanks to the warmth of excitement and nerves as Peace Runners, Trailblazers and Marathon Movers all hit the pavement to stretch their legs for small road trip distances.

The results are in, with South Africa standing tall and motivated with many personal and widespread achievements.

For the Peace Run’s 10km, athletics up-and-comer Adriaan Wildschutt set a new course record in 27 minutes and 53 seconds—the same track star who broke a decades-old track record earlier this year during the On Track Fest.

In the tribe of the trailblazers, Cape Town local Samantha Reilly secured what to her was a surprising win for the Cape Town Trail Marathon, conquering 46kms in 5 hours, 9 minutes and 11 seconds.

As for the Cape Town Marathon’s sea of activity, Ethiopia’s Adane Kebede Gebre and Tsige Haileslase Abreha earned first place for the 42.2 kilometre-long journey within 2 hours, 11 minutes and 29 seconds and 2 hours, 24 minutes and 17 seconds respectively.

The first South African finish saw Stephen Mokoka (who has won many times before) slide into second, while for the Women’s leg, Nontokozo Happiness Mkhize soared in at 9th.

Geert Schipper from the Netherlands scored first for the Wheelchair Elite stretch with a time of 1 hour, 32 minutes and 9 seconds as Great Britain’s Eden Rainbow-Cooper finished first in the Women’s Wheelchair Elite in 1 hour, 52 minutes and 58 seconds.

Feeling inspired? Entries for 2024 are already open!

SA Athletes are lacing up for the World Road Running Championships in Lativa, where they have the chance to make history!

Global (28 September, 2023)— SA Athletes are gearing up for an exciting challenge; amped and ready to put their best foot forward for this year’s World Road Running Championships.

Set to take place in Riga, Latvia from 29 September, this edition of the championships offers a unique twist as athletes will get to compete in a range of distances for the first time, a departure from the event’s single-distance format.

Stephen Mokoka, Elroy Gelant, Precious Mashele and Thabang Mosiako will all tackle the Men’s 21.1km event, while national champ Glenrose Xaba with Cacisile Sosibo, Cian Oldknow and Kesa Molotsane prepare for the women’s half marathon.

The men’s 5km event will see Nicholas Seoposengwe and Maxime Chaumeton lace up, while it’s up to Tayla Kavanagh and Kyla Jacobs for the women’s 5km.

Despite weather concerns, these athletes will work individually and together to put themselves in the best standing to make history. Podium finishes would be a massive win, the likes of which the SA have been gunning for since 1999, when the last SA athletes led us to gold in this event.

While these champs head forward as hopeful victors, others have recently returned home!

Alwande Sikhosana and Leon Els enjoyed their homecoming after an incredibly successful series of slams at the  African Para Games in Ghana where they secured a golden win as a team and Sikhosana was crowned the overall champion.

And, right on home ground, more South African athletes made us proud at the Down Syndrome International Gymnastics World Championships with local superstars shining across disciplines and podium positions.

Christelle Hattingh recently put the power in the Powerman Zofingen Duathlon Championships for RSA; making a podium placement amid some of the world’s strongest competitors.

Global (07 September 2023) — South African female endurance runners are having their moment in the spotlight and scooping podium victories across the world! Recently, Christelle Hattingh put the power in the Powerman Zofingen for South Africa, making a proud podium placement at the global duathlon event in Switzerland.

Christelle came in third for the long-distance duathlon for her age category and shared that she was also the speediest South African in—an apt charm for her third experience tackling the Powerman, especially as race day was one of the hottest for the World Triathlon event.

“The route and competition is always tough,” Christelle tells Good Things Guy. However, “the feeling of accomplishment once I have crossed that line is just priceless,” she adds.

For her, the support from the Zofingen community also makes the many kilometres running and cycling (over 8 hours) worth it.

“I am so grateful for my Homestay Family Mariaan and Patric Ebeling who invited me into their home for the week leading up to Powerman. I have never felt so right at home. I wish all my friends could also experience it in the way I did,” Christelle adds.

Her achievement follows that of another female South African trailblazer—Toni McCann who recently became the first local to ever win the Ultra-Trail du Mont-Blanc OCC in France last week—a first for South Africa.
