The Two Oceans Marathon flew by, leaving behind a trail of achievement-studded results from South African runners! Amid those who made us so proud are Gerda Steyn (who was crowned champ for the fifth consecutive year) and the firefighters who ran fully kitted, purely to make a difference:
Cape Town, South Africa (15 April 2024) — The Two Oceans Marathon has flown by as quickly as the many speedsters in the race; leaving behind a trail of inspiring results for the next cohort of participants. From seasoned champs to newcomers and even firefighters, the 2024 Ultra and Half Marathons filled the City of Cape Town with the kind of enthusiasm that made anyone want to run with pace toward their own dreams.
Holding down her reputation as the Mother of Marathons, Gerda Steyn was this year’s female Ultramarathon victor—for the fifth consecutive time. Not to mention, the seasoned star also beat her own record for the third time; shaving off more than two minutes for her latest showdown. Completing 50 kilometres in a time of 3:26:54? It could only be Gerda!
In the men’s Ultra, it was South Africa’s Onalenna KhonKhobe, AKA the ‘dangerous protagonist’ who dominated the race with 3:09:30 on the clock. A fierce believer in his victory before the fact, Onalenna came, saw and conquered the kilometres, with a brilliant smile as he crossed the finish line.
As for the Halfies, Mokulubete Makatisi from Lesotho soared in first with a time of 1:13:52, while SA’s Thabang Mosiako reeled in the victory count with a time of 1:04:40.
As for crowd favourites who laced up to make an impact, firefighters Jermaine Carelse and Renaldo Duncan cranked up the heat for this year’s Half Marathon stretch. Together, they successfully completed the Half Marathon in a time of 2 hours and 46 minutes, all to raise funds for Volunteer Wildfire Services! Even more heartwarmingly, this year VWS racing buddies Liam Gannon and Steve Akester joined the trek for the cause.
Meanwhile, in other news, where people will put their bodies to the ultimate test—the 2024 Cableway Charity Challenge is just around the bend and has already made steady headway toward creating incredible impact for several underserved communities.
