Hard months of training paid off over the weekend after runners completed the Cape Town Marathon, many of them with flying colours! In exciting news for South Africa, a new record was even set for the counterpart races:
Cape Town, South Africa (17 October 2023) — Long, hard months of training, self-motivation and many ‘Am I really doing this?’ moments paid off over the weekend in the City of Cape Town as runners of all skill levels took to the local streets for the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon and its counterpart races.
The weekend was heated (and not just because of good weather) thanks to the warmth of excitement and nerves as Peace Runners, Trailblazers and Marathon Movers all hit the pavement to stretch their legs for small road trip distances.
The results are in, with South Africa standing tall and motivated with many personal and widespread achievements.
For the Peace Run’s 10km, athletics up-and-comer Adriaan Wildschutt set a new course record in 27 minutes and 53 seconds—the same track star who broke a decades-old track record earlier this year during the On Track Fest.
In the tribe of the trailblazers, Cape Town local Samantha Reilly secured what to her was a surprising win for the Cape Town Trail Marathon, conquering 46kms in 5 hours, 9 minutes and 11 seconds.
As for the Cape Town Marathon’s sea of activity, Ethiopia’s Adane Kebede Gebre and Tsige Haileslase Abreha earned first place for the 42.2 kilometre-long journey within 2 hours, 11 minutes and 29 seconds and 2 hours, 24 minutes and 17 seconds respectively.
The first South African finish saw Stephen Mokoka (who has won many times before) slide into second, while for the Women’s leg, Nontokozo Happiness Mkhize soared in at 9th.
Geert Schipper from the Netherlands scored first for the Wheelchair Elite stretch with a time of 1 hour, 32 minutes and 9 seconds as Great Britain’s Eden Rainbow-Cooper finished first in the Women’s Wheelchair Elite in 1 hour, 52 minutes and 58 seconds.
