By providing nutritious peanut butter sandwiches, The Domino Foundation aims to alleviate some of the burden on matriculants and help them perform their best as the final exam season approaches.

Durban, South Africa (01 October 2024) – We’ve all been there, where we can see the light at the end of the tunnel of our high school career, but the stress of final exams looms.

Being a matric learner during this time of year comes with a whirlwind of emotions, trying to balance anticipation and the pressure to excel academically to secure a bright future in the real world.

The Domino Foundation’s Nutrition programme is making a significant impact on the lives of matric learners in KwaZulu-Natal.

Recognising the immense stress and pressure faced by these young people during exam season, the programme is providing free peanut butter sandwiches to learners at selected schools.

Schools reopened today, and six crucial weeks are looming for the Class of ’24. The run-up to the first exams is a testing time for all those squeezing in hour after hour of revision, and for many in township schools, finding a quiet corner at home where they can study effectively is a great challenge.

According to the foundation, matric learners at Siyabonga Secondary School, Lwazi Goqo and Andiswa Mhlongo, know how a daily peanut butter sandwich can help them cope with long hours of study.

Leader of The Domino Foundation’s Nutrition programme in Amanzimtoti, Cheryl Dann said:

“In the best of circumstances, this is a very stressful time for Grade 12 students. Many of the young people our programme has contact with have added issues to deal with and we want to relieve some of the burden by ensuring they have some high-protein food each day through the exam period.”

The Nutrition Programme will be delivering sandwiches every Friday to Siyabonga Secondary in Illovo Township, Umbelebele Secondary in Umlazi, Mcothoyi Secondary in Umgababa and Zuzumqhele Secondary School in Kwa Makhutha.

“Compounds found in peanuts increase blood flow to the part of the brain involved in learning and recall. Comprehension is improved, general mood is enhanced and the chance of depression is reduced. All great pluses for learners dealing with exam pressure,” Dann explained.

The Domino Foundation’s efforts extend beyond exam season, with the Nutrition Program’s kitchen also providing thousands of sandwiches to other schools, porridge to Early Childhood Development centres, and food hampers to families in need.

The drive to get sandwiches to matric learners puts a greater demand on the programme’s resources.

The foundation is appealing for donations of peanut butter to ensure that more matriculants can benefit from this essential support.
