Adding to the artistic movement of little things making a big difference in Cape Town’s City Centre is a new project that’s giving worn flower pots a makeover; helping instil care and pride in town, all while proving that the details add up.

Cape Town, South Africa (16 October 2024) — 2024 has been a big year of little improvements for Cape Town’s City Centre! In a bid to showcase how much the details matter, the City Centre has been spruced up in a myriad of ways—from the bollard beautifying effort that kickstarted the year to the recently painted flower pots that now adorn areas like Adderley and Longmarket Street.

Many of these artistic touches have come with a lot of care; fittingly added by artists themselves under the lead of community organisation, The Cape Town Central City Improvement District.

HandCantrol 360 Crew (a team of artists including CareCreative, Urban Khoi, Mak1one, SergeOne and Dfeat Once) have been imperative in the beautification effort.

The flower pots were said to have been in a sad way; void of their flowers and the vision of neglect.

Their makeover will see them move to Waterkant St where they will get to hold fresh indigenous plants all while boasting new creative looks.

CCID Urban Management’s Kally Benito explains that this is all part of a greater beautification strategy that the team hope will create more visual interest in town.

As with the bollards, it is also a way to instil pride in members of the community; encouraging them to care for public spaces and street treasures.

When litter cast a not-so-lekker shadow on Riebeek Valley, Nico Rens decided to do something pretty creative. What began as an experiment to turn plastic bottles and tops into chandeliers and lights has become a whole movement!

Riebeek-Kasteel, South Africa (15 October 2024) — When artist Nico Rens moved to the Riebeek Valley several years ago, he couldn’t ignore the duality of the area. On the one hand, there were charming villages against great backdrops of natural beauty. On the other, plastic and waste seemingly grew from the ground; ruining precious parts of the Valley with litter galore.

With a background in architecture and interior design, Nico was no stranger to coming up with clever solutions creatively. Seeing the litter problem as something bigger, he decided to begin experimenting; tinkering with the idea that if the waste was simply remodelled, it might become something fantastic.

Nico began making chandeliers by reworking plastic bottles, containers and lids as part of the design. But, he was just one person and the waste problem needed a lot more hands on deck. So, he decided to launch a plastic waste collection program amongst the local youth.

Many of the young people were interested in how he transformed the plastic. Nico realised that he could tackle the environmental problems and problems related to social upliftment, and soon, a new project was born!

In collaboration with FOR Life Centre, a Non-Profit Organisation that fosters social upliftment, development and reconciliation through community arts programs in the Valley, the new project offered a way to equip people with a means not just to tackle waste but to transform it.

It provided workshops around waste management and collection, recycling, design, construction, and ultimately upcycling!

When Megan Wilson, an acclaimed theatre director, producer and actor among many other titles, learned of the project, she saw its potential for even more good.

What if it could become something that spreads awareness about environmental issues and the means to empower oneself by tackling them? What if it could offer sustainable employment and training to uplift the local community and extend further into the Western Cape? The lightbulb moment had hit, and it wasn’t long until Africa Illumination was born!

Just like Nico’s original work, Africa Illumination creates lighting from upcycled materials. With four community members employed, the idea has already helped people not only give back to their environment and put food on the table, but connect to a greater sense of purpose.

In fact, team leader Johannes Dirks shares that it is work that is “food for his soul”.

With help from Nico’s brother, Gerhard Rens, a retired engineer, the designs have only gotten more functional.

The team is small, but the spotlight on them is enlarging. They have already participated in Solo Studios—Intimate Art Encounters 2024 in Riebeek Kasteel, as well as the Stanford in Bloom festival. Not to mention some features on TV and customers who have purchased the creations from as far as Canada!

These Riebeek Valley locals are showing us that a little extra care and a lot of creative juices can go a long way, and in more directions than just sustainable living. You can check out their goods at the square in Riebeek-Kasteel or right here.

South African artist, Jake Michael Singer, is to represent our country amid the world’s top contemporary artists in a prestigious exhibition overlooking none-other-than the Pyramids of Giza!

Global, South Africa (13 October 2024) — Thousands of years later, the Pyramids of Giza still stand magnificently as a glimpse into the world of ancients.

They are arguably one of the most fascinating structures from the Bronze Age and uniquely, structures that evoke as much (if not more) awe now as they did back then.

Considering that the pyramids have seen more of human history unfold than almost any other trope of engineering around the world, it goes without saying that it’s no small feat to showcase art among them. But, if you’re celebrated South African contemporary artist Jake Michael Singer, that feat is soon to be a reality!

Jake, who is based in Johannesburg and Istanbul, is set to mark a big mark on the global art scene with his participation in ‘Forever Is Now.04’, an internationally acclaimed outdoor art exhibition.

Planned to take place on the famous plateau overlooking the Pyramids, Jake is one of 12 leading contemporary artists from all over the world who will be taking part.

A celebration of art, history and culture, Jake will be representing South Africa with his sculpture ‘We Will Meet Again in the Sky’.

A monumental work that boasts 5 metres in height, the piece moulds themes of connection, transcendence and collective memory into an interpretation of the ancient Egyptian bird Bennu.

As Egyptian mythology buffs will know, Bennu is a symbol of creation and rebirth; transcending the boundaries of the physical and the eternal.

“Participating in ‘Forever Is Now.04’ is a profound moment for me,” says the artist.

“The setting amidst the ancient Pyramids of Giza is deeply inspiring and resonates with the themes of my work. I hope ‘We Will Meet Again in the Sky’ will spark reflection and dialogue among viewers from all corners of the globe.”

‘Forever Is Now04’ will run from 24 October 2024 to 16 November 2024.

Not only did epic artist Chris Wevers change the lives of two dogs by adopting them from the Springs SPCA, but he also left the organisation a special gift to celebrate all the other animals on their journey homeward—a new ‘Going Home’ mural!

Springs, South Africa (06 October 2024) — After adopting two dogs from the Springs SPCA, epic artist Chris Wevers decided to give the SPCA a special gift of their own.

Putting his artistic talents to heartwarming use, Chris sat for hours to doll up their wall—creating something of a colourful light at the end of the tunnel in the form of a gorgeous ‘Going Home’ mural!

Filled with galactic spray-painted colours, a handsome cat and an adorable pup, the wall now stands proudly as the place where animals will be photographed with their new owners. Did we mention that Chris finished the whole project in a day?

While it’s a huge reflection of his talents, it’s also a reflection of his heart.

The Springs SPCA were ‘absolutely blown away’ by the result, which will now mark many hopeful and happy moments for the animals in their care. For them, Chris isn’t just an epic artist but an earth angel.

Meanwhile, in other news of animal heroes stepping up, Cape Town teenager Riley Valentine has made good on his birthday tradition of donating gifts to the Animal Welfare Society of SA, celebrating his 13th birthday and lots of dog food with them!

Showcasing the power of community is a new exhibition that was created by artists across South Africa who teamed up with local bead workers, embroiders, and mosaic magicians!

Cape Town, South Africa (03 October 2024) — A local collaborative collection dubbed ‘Alchemy’ is showcasing the power of community!

With artists, bead-workers, embroiders, and mosaic masters joining hands, the South African creative scene has produced a unique collection in ‘Alchemy’—one that speaks to opportunity, storytelling and, of course, Ubuntu in the form of being inspired by each other.

Curated by non-profit the Spier Arts Trust (SAT), Alchemy will be showcasing at Cape Town’s HUB Gallery, serving as a precursor to a huge opportunity for the local artists—the opportunity to inspire London and all those venturing across the pond for the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair!

The 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair is taking centre stage in London from 10 to 13 October. Here, works that were specifically produced in a collaborative way from South Africa will be showcased; offering up local perspectives in unity to a global gathering celebrating culture from our continent.

Alchemy echoes this energy; showcasing over 20 artists and their collaborations with artisans including those from the Keiskamma Art Project (a Project that works with textile artworks that aid in archiving the rural Eastern Cape’s collective memory) the HUB Mosaic Studio (an educational platform that equips apprentices with skills) and fine beaders from Qaqambile Bead Studio that are known for translating brushstrokes into thousands of beautiful beads.

The collaborative works exhibited on Alchemy have been made with hand-cut glass and stone, glass seed beads and wool embroidery. These pieces are three-dimensional and tactile—representing the artisanal finesse of those who worked behind the scenes.

Many of the pieces that form part of the collection are infused with socio-political and personal contexts—an example of how sometimes, it takes a village to capture the full essence of a story.

For instance, Nkosinathi Quwe’s piece tells the story of his isiXhosa heritage, while Meshack Tembani’s artwork honours the strong presence of female leaders from his Crossroads upbringing.

You can catch Alchemy until 25 October.

Cape Town-based artist Gavin Larkin has reimagined the beyond-famous Mona Lisa in a fascinating way: through upcycled materials!

Cape Town, South Africa (29 September 2024) — Cape Town-based artist and photographer Gavin Larkin has reimagined one of the most famous paintings of all time in a series of captivating wonders. Here, the old saying ‘One man’s trash is another man’s treasure’ couldn’t be more fitting. In fact, ‘One man’s trash might just be another’s Mona Lisa’.

Originally from Port Elizabeth, Gavin has long been drawn to the visual curiosities of the world. Inspired by the French Impressionists, nature and the art of painting ‘en plein air’, Gavin has quite a knack for snatching big and expressive moments, and remastering them on a much smaller canvas.

But, his series of Mona Lisas’ reimagined strikes a different chord of creativity.

Here, we see the painting that’s had the world’s eyes upon it for ages. Yet, it is not an exhibition of paint. One Mona Lisa is a mosaic of plastic bottle tops. Another boasts metal bottle caps cured in resin, collected mostly from Muizenberg. There’s also the ‘It’s in the Can’ rendition of the Mona Lisa; made from beverage cans. Not to mention the ‘Keeping Tabs’ Mona Lisa, who, you guessed it, has been constructed through pull tabs.

Upcycling crafted in this delicate way offers the viewer quite the juxtaposition. Here is the waste we so often turn our noses up in its ugly imposition, so beautifully mended together to create a masterpiece.

“Much emphasis is placed on experimentation with used (waste) and new materials and mediums, whilst always striving to be unique and original,” reads the artist’s statement.

“Being on the cutting edge of modern art is where my interest is,” it furthers. And really, what could be more cutting edge than turning the eyesores of our world into quite the opposite?

You can visit the artworks at Youngblood Africa in Cape Town this September.

In celebration of the Springboks’ claiming the Freedom Cup, artivist Natania Botha and creative Kevash Naidoo teamed up to create the Sustainable Springbok Sculpture—an ode to South Africa’s pride and joy and all they encompass:

Johannesburg, South Africa (16 September 2024) — South African artivist Natania Botha recently teamed up with talented 20-year-old creative Kevash Naidoo to create an ode to the Springboks and all they encompass in art form. The result? A breathtaking mosaic sculpture that, just like the Boks, embodies unity—unity that’s made possible by the sum of many differences coming together for one proud purpose.

The Springboks Sculpture comes as a celebration of the Springboks victory in reclaiming the Freedom Cup—a feat South Africans across the world are still relishing in. But, it’s also a striking visual translation of other concepts South Africa sees itself reflected in through our national team.

“The sculpture represents the fusion of art, sport and social inclusion,” says Natania who described the experience of working with Kevash, who has Down syndrome, as a “meaningful collaboration of art and resilience” and a privilege.

“It stands as a visual homage to teamwork, unity, and overcoming challenges—values that Kevash and I embraced wholeheartedly throughout the creative process.”

And, just like South Africa’s love for our team, the sculpture is sustainable.

“What makes this sculpture truly special is that it is a sustainable creation, crafted from a recycled mannequin and sustainably sourced materials, symbolising not only the triumph of the Springboks but also the importance of environmental responsibility,” Natania, who is no stranger to bringing mannequins to life in the most thought-provoking ways, adds.

“Our sustainable approach further highlights the importance of rethinking how we create and consume in a world increasingly focused on preserving resources.”

Natania and Kevash hope their Sustainable Springbok Sculpture will get the chance to travel far and wide across South Africa and inspire more locals to unite as team members of our country.

Currently, you can catch it on exhibition at the Gordon Institute of Business Science.

Dr Esther Mahlangu’s art has been the talk of Atlanta in the USA recently, with Alicia Keys curating a special collection featuring Dr Mahlangu’s work and John Legend stopping by at another exhibition in support of our local legend!

Atlanta, United States of America (16 September 2024) — Widely celebrated South African artist and local ‘Art Gogo’ Dr Esther Mahlangu’s art is having a well-deserved moment in the spotlight yet again thanks to an exhibition that has attracted the likes of John Legend and another that’s been curated by none-other-than Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz.

Following a whirlwind of excitement that saw Dr Mahlangu’s historic art car come home for the first time in decades before taking off on a world tour and a solo exhibition in New York, other works from the Ndebele star have been attracting acclaimed attention in Atlanta.

‘Heritage Hues’, an exhibition by Dr. Mahlangu that was co-curated by Hassan Smith at ZuCot Gallery presents a selection of her works in fully-fledged vibrancy and Ndebele flair. For Africans in the diaspora, it’s more than an art exhibition from a giant in the field; but also a means of connecting others to their roots through the medium.

The exhibition was recently enjoyed by Mr John Legend himself, who popped into Dr Mahlangu’s world in Atlanta for the opening in visible awe.

But Mr Legend wasn’t the only celebrity celebrating Esther.

In another curation by Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz, Dr Mahlangu’s work takes centre stage once again as part of ‘Giants’ at The High Museum of Art, also in Atlanta, following its run in Brooklyn.

The art on display comes from the collection of the music legends themselves, with Dr Mahlangu’s work featuring amongst 115 objects and 98 major artworks, including the likes of Nick Cave and Lorna Simpson.

For South Africans and fans of Dr Mahlangu, it’s incredibly inspiring to see how far our artists journey has taken her, and even more enriching to see how much power art so deeply rooted in a slice of South Africa’s culture has proven to be.

To look for the light in even the darkest times is one thing, and to shine in the darkness is another. One Capetonian artist brings both to the conversation, transforming these metaphors into visual works!

Cape Town, South Africa (12 September 2024) — Many of us have heard numerous reinterpretations of the metaphor that asks us to look for the light even in the darkest times. But seeing that sentiment visually is an entirely different experience and one that Mitchell’s Plain artist Sandile Ashar Mhlongo has quite literally, brought to light.

Born in Gugulethu and a resident of Mitchell’s Plain’s Lost City, Sandile’s art career began in high school in the late 1980s. With an Impressionist’s fascination of real-life experiences, Sandile created works about his family’s experiences. Inspired by his father, who was both an artist and a bricklayer, Sandile has carried the artistic baton, earning praise for his visually striking depictions of everyday life infused with a touch of the surreal.

Sandile merges the real and the surreal and pierces through the literalism of metaphors in his latest collection,’Lights in Darkness, Darkness in Light’. Here, the overarching message is to choose to look at light, even in the darkest times, informed by the artist’s keen observations of South Africa’s changing landscape and the ever curious interplay between hope and despair from a Capetonian’s perspective.

“There’s good and bad in the dark. Choose light. Shine, shine your light in the dark and you will find all you are looking for.”—Sandile Ashar Mhlongo.

‘Lights in Darkness, Darkness in Light’ will be showcased as part of a solo exhibition by House Union Block (HUB) at the Cape Heritage’s Sisonke Gallery on Bree Street until 27 October, and all hoping to be inspired to find the light no matter the darkness are encouraged to pop in.

Cape Town artists are auctioning off their pieces to make a bigger picture of difference for animals in need across the Cape!

Cape Town, South Africa (03 September 2024) — Creativity and a cause will share the limelight in Bo-Kaap later this month as Cape Town artists unite for African Tails’ biggest fundraiser! Here, their pieces will unite to create a bigger picture of difference for animals in need across the Cape.

A Cape Town-based NPO that has been in the business of caring for animals for nearly 20 years, African Tails has made an indelible mark on the city.

To date, they have sterilised over 16,500 animals, homed over 2,300 and treated just shy of 4,000 while feeding over 13,000 dogs and cats who call the streets home. While their mission is led by heart, it’s made possible by donations, which is where the artists come in!

“The Art Auction is our biggest fundraiser, and we are thrilled and so grateful to have these amazing artists donate some incredible pieces of which all proceeds will ensure we can continue our work,” says Yael Sacks, one of the founders of African Tails.

The auction in question will see some of Cape Town’s most celebrated artists generously donate their works; including Nicola Bailey, Cathy Abrahams, Mbuleleo Terrence Lakota, Gabrielle Kruger, Michael Chandler, Kate Gottgens and Louise Gelderblom.

All of the proceeds will make a direct beeline to African Tails; helping the organisation keep on keeping on for another year of changing, saving and impacting lives, largely in a sustainable way through specialised programmes.

“African Tails strives to make a sustainable long-term impact through mass sterilisations and pet care education in impoverished communities,” explains Yael. “The impact of the pet care education transcends pet care, and imparts pivotal skills such as responsibility, empathy and accountability which are wonderful life skills.”

Mass sterilisation is also the apple of Tails’ focus. The organisation shares that one unsterilised female dog and her offspring can produce a whopping 67,000 puppies in just six years. The focus on sterilisation then helps combat the over-population of neglected and abused dogs and cats.

However, thanks to animal-loving artists and generous support, year-on-year, the art auction has made a difference, with hopes that this year, it will be booked into the same calibre.

Art Auction Details

  • When: 19 September from 5:30 pm
