South African conservationist Paul Gardiner’s new series ‘Natural Born Runners’ is set to take us on something of a conservation ‘marathon’ across the world! Paul is running all over the world’s last wilderness areas to meet wildlife heroes near and far:

Global (15 October 2024) — Conservationist and eco-tourism expert Paul Gardiner is taking us all on the run of multiple lifetimes thanks to his new series, ‘Natural Born Runners’.

Set to launch during the COP16 summit (AKA, the most important biodiversity event that unites eco-leaders across the world), ‘Natural Born Runners’ is set to take us all on a conservation adventure into and through some of the last wilderness areas in the world focused on the theme ‘Peace with Nature’ in line with COP16.

From icy terrains to open grasslands, Paul’s running shoes will take him across the world in a massive effort to learn about what conservationists are getting up to in their effort to prolong species’ environments and lifetimes.

A deep-rooted passion, Paul was born into a family for whom conservation efforts like rewilding were a labour of love. His father was a visionary who transformed Shamwari Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape into one of the world’s leading conservation success stories; helping reintroduce lions, rhinos and elephants back into their natural habitat.

As such, Paul begins his trek in the Eastern Cape; retracing these efforts. From there, he ventures to Scotland’s Alladale Wilderness Reserve all the way to North America to learn of the inspiring restoration of the American bison there.

‘Natural Born Runners’ will also see him participate in Run Richmond 16.19—a race founded by Oscar-nominated actor and activist Djimon Hounsou (Amistad, Gladiator).

Along for the ride is Paul’s cameraman and aspiring wildlife filmmaker Christian Antoine, who makes up for what he lacks in endurance running through comedy and edutainment.

The series is set to be launched on YouTube as a way to connect with the next generation of nature’s guardians—young people.

“We need to inspire the youth to take ownership of the planet’s future, and YouTube is where they engage,” says Paul.

“If we’re going to make peace with nature, the next generation needs to be at the forefront.”

The world can’t get enough of South African stories! In exciting news for the land of local television, the hit show ‘Spinners’ has been selected for the new series-loving festival in Berlin, ‘Seriesly’.

Berlin, Germany (19 September 2024) — Following the applause-worthy news that local production ‘Don’t Let’s Go to the Dogs Tonight’ was an acclaimed smash-hit at the Toronto Film Festival, the land of local TV series is also having its moment in the global spotlight with ‘Spinners’ at the centre.

‘Spinners’ has been selected to be a part of the new Berlin series festival dubbed ‘Seriesly‘, a creative celebration of series culture focused on changing the industry for the better.

Those who have fallen in love with the proudly South African show starring Cantona James need no explanation as to why the series has taken the world by storm. But, to give those who haven’t binged the story yet some context, it has enjoyed sold-out premieres, became the first African series selected in competition at Canneseries, was praised as the ‘gold standard for local productions’ and beat out Emmy-winning Succession in Shangai for Best Foreign TV Series at the 29th Shanghai TV Festival’s Magnolia Awards earlier this year amongst other big wins.

Spinners tells the emotive story of teenage driver Ethan, who works for a local gang in Cape Town largely to support his little brother. However, when our lead discovers a gritty talent for spinning (the kind of motorsport no one should try at home), his world begins to quite literally spin as he realises this might be his way out of gang life.

Spinners’ merit as a top-tier local production earning international praise left, right and centre isn’t just a nod to our television industry but to stories that resonate with many South Africans and quite simply couldn’t be told from any other place in the world.

You can catch Spinners on Showmax.

Grab the popcorn because the ultimate Pride Month watchlist round-up is here with the best pride picks from Comedy to Reality and of course, Sex in Afrikaans:

Global (29 October 2023) — Grab the popcorn! To celebrate the end of Pride Month in South Africa this October, genres have united to be part of the ultimate LGBTQIA+ watchlist, with something for everyone on offer. From Reality and Romance to Comedy and Post-Apocalyptic favourites, pick your next couch potato night from these episodes:

The Ultimate Pride Month Watchlist

Horror: Chucky S1-3

Yes, it’s about a serial killer-possessed doll who makes horrible puns and murders people, but Don Mancini’s Chucky series has one of the most multi-faceted portrayals of queer identity and exploration of the world on TV.

It starts when Jake Wheeler (Zackary Arthur), a 14-year-old gay boy and doll collector, finds Chucky, who returns the “favour” of being rescued from the yardsale trash pile by targeting Jake’s bullies, including his abusive alcoholic father.

As well as giving us a queer revenge story that turns to horror, Chucky delivers a voyage of discovery between Jake and his crush-turned-friend and more, Devon Evans (Bjorgvin Arnarson).

Post-Apocalyptic: The Last of Us S1

A horror series about the end of the world is also one that clings to love and hope in all forms. Joel (Pedro Pascal) the smuggler escorts 14-year-old Ellie (non-binary performer Bella Ramsey) across an apocalyptic version of the United States in which society has collapsed thanks to a fungal outbreak that turns its human hosts into zombies. Episode 7 centres on Ellie’s backstory, including her playful love for her best friend Riley (Storm Reid) and their first kiss.

Series fans have also fallen in love with gay couple Bill (Nick Offerman), a grumpy doomsday prepper and Frank (Murray Barlett), an outgoing survivalist in episode 3, who gets a kind and moving story as they thrive together despite the world falling apart.

High School Drama: Euphoria S1-2

Zendaya has taken home two Emmys for her role in Euphoria as troubled teen addict Rue. The series’ first season offers a heartfelt look at trans experience and identification through Rue’s girlfriend Jules (trans performer Hunter Schafer) and her discussions with her therapist, along with a look at the damage that repression does through Nate (Jacob Elordi) and Cal (Eric Dane).

University Comedy: The Sex Lives of College Girls S2

Four best friends embark on multiple journeys of self-discovery at university in this comedy series created by Mindy Kaling and Justin Noble. Along with tackling student debt, sexual harassment and racism in academia in relatable and sensitive ways, the series also delivers queer joy in the budding relationships between closeted rich girl Leighton Murray (Reneé Rapp) and out-and-proud feminist Alicia (Midori Francis).

As the series goes on, Leighton continues to experiment in ways that’ll ring a bell with many viewers.

Messy, shameless, fun and freeing, Leighton gains confidence as she gives free rein to parts of herself that she was cut off from growing up.

Comedy about Comedians: Hacks S1-2

Hacks follows the sparky interplay between bisexual trainwreck and Gen Z comedy writer Ava (Hannah Einbinder), her ‘boss’, demanding comedienne Deborah (Jean Smart) and Deborah’s retinue, including her manager and PA.

The creators of the show stated that they wanted to reflect the full spectrum of gender and sexual identities and cultures that they worked with in LA, but more than that, they wanted to showcase queer people just living their lives.

Medical Drama: This Is Going To Hurt

Winner of four BAFTAs, This Is Going To Hurt follows a junior doctor in an obstetrics ward in the UK’s overburdened and collapsing public health system during 2006. Adam Kay adapted his own tragic-comic memoir of the same name, winning the Writing: Drama BAFTA in the process.

Adam (Ben Whishaw) spends most of the series at the end of his rope from exhaustion as he tries to train another junior doctor, Shruti (Ambika Mod), and to be present in his relationship with his supportive boyfriend, Harry (Rory Fleck Byrne).

But, there’s just not enough of him to go round and everything is starting to buckle. The series then shows Adam clinging to survival by his wits as his parents urge him to marry a nice girl and go into private medicine, and he’s battling with just not fitting in with the posh, straight friends he grew up with, or Harry’s hard-partying queer friend group. The struggle is real.

Best Comedy Drama: Somebody Somewhere S1-2

Actress, comedian and singer Bridget Everett breathes life into this HBO semi-autobiographical midlife crisis drama-comedy. Sam (Everett) is 40-something and lost after returning to her small-town Kansas home to help take care of her dying sister, Holly.

Sam gets back a piece of the joy that she’s lost when a new friend and co-worker, Joel (Jeff Hiller) reunites her with people who share Holly’s determined individualism and courage at “church choir practice night” — a front for a secret social club where the town’s queer community can be themselves without fear.

Period Drama: Gentleman Jack S1-2

Another BAFTA-nominated pick, this historical romantic drama is based on the coded diaries of real-life Victorian-era landowner, lesbian and industrialist Anne Lister (Suranne Jones) and explores her courtship and relationship with Anne Walker (Sophie Rundle).

The series treatment of their relationship covers everything from discreet and guarded flirtation in public to non-exploitative, sense-intimate scenes that build off the couple’s relationship without ducking entirely behind steamy metaphors.

 Reality TV: We’re Here S1-2

In this fun and moving reality series, drag queens Shangela, Eureka and Bob The Drag Queen (From RuPaul’s Drag Race) travel around the US visiting small towns to help LGBTQIA people to celebrate their individuality, find their allies and establish community as they put on a drag show.

Their clients are a true reflection of life growing up queer, neurodivergent or differently abled in small-town USA, and doesn’t gloss over the struggles while pursuing freedom of expression.

Sex Ed: Sex in Afrikaans

South Africa’s Afrikaans community is often seen as deeply conservative but this docu-reality series blows the lid off that potjie.

As clinical psychologist Bradley R Daniels leads a panel of 10 Afrikaans people in opening up about what they do when the neighbours aren’t around and what they’re curious about, we see the true range of how Afrikaans people pursue pleasure.

“Tiny Beautiful Things” delivers a strong, powerful message… grief is the price we pay for love.

Johannesburg, South Africa (09 April 2023) – I spent most of yesterday binging “Tiny Beautiful Things” – the heartbreaking story follows a woman who reluctantly becomes “Dear Sugar” after suffering what can only be called a midlife crisis.

“Dear Sugar” offers advice to readers on a wide range of topics, such as love, loss, family, career, and personal growth. Cheryl Strayed’s responses are characterized by their depth, compassion, and honesty as she draws from her own life experiences to offer practical and heartfelt guidance to her readers. Her advice column was originally published anonymously but the author eventually revealed her identity, which made the column even more engaging.

Her mother, Bobbi Lambrecht, suddenly passed away from lung cancer when Strayed was 22 years old, but she never fully dealt with it… this event had a profound impact on the talented author’s life and is a central theme in her memoir “Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail”.

But that changes when she is given a job that she never really wanted but needed – the “Dear Sugar” column. She is forced to deal with it all.

Her story is painted with heartbreak, tragedy and heavy emotion. Kathryn Hahn is unreal, and the younger version of her, Sarah Pidgeon, is absolutely captivating in her role. Also, the new series was produced by Reece Witherspoon and Laura Dern, so you know it’s going to be a goodie.

The message… grief is the price we pay for love.

I guess I related so much to the story because the parallels to me are so stark.

I’m a writer. My dad died. Suddenly. I receive so many messages on a daily basis from people who are in need of help that I sometimes feel like my own version of “Dear Sugar”. I am writing a book (kinda-almost-on-some-days). And I live with my sadness and grief every single day.

Watching the series was a cathartic experience for me but it is based on her books, so I thought I would share some of my best quotes from her writing to help you through life’s challenges.

Here are 10 “Tiny Beautiful Things” to remember:

1. The best thing you can possibly do with your life is to tackle the motherf***ing shit out of love.

2. Nobody will protect you from your suffering. You can’t cry it away or eat it away or starve it away or walk it away or punch it away or even therapy it away. It’s just there, and you have to survive it. You have to endure it. You have to live through it and love it and move on and be better for it and run as far as you can in the direction of your best and happiest dreams across the bridge that was built by your own desire to heal.

3. We are all just walking each other home.

4. You don’t have a right to the cards you believe you should have been dealt. You have an obligation to play the hell out of the ones you’re holding.”

5. The useless days will add up to something. The shitty waitressing jobs. The hours writing in your journal. The long meandering walks. The hours reading poetry and story collections and novels and dead people’s diaries and wondering about sex and God and whether you should shave under your arms or not. These things are your becoming.

6. Let yourself be gutted. Let it open you. Start there.

7. We are all experts in our own terror.

8. Don’t surrender all your joy for an idea you used to have about yourself that isn’t true anymore.

9. The question isn’t whether you should stay or go. The question is: How would your life be different if you chose the latter?”

10. Forgiveness doesn’t sit there like a pretty boy in a bar. Forgiveness is the old fat guy you have to haul up the hill.

“Tiny Beautiful Things” is crafted beautifully into eight 30-minute episodes and is available now on Hulu and Disney+.

I hope you find as much joy in it as I did.

Okay. Love you. Bye.

BBC Earth is getting a new “local is lekker” reality series today… and it is all about Owl Rescue in South Africa.

Johannesburg, South Africa (11 March 2023) – Owl Rescue SA, a 10-part reality television series, featuring the conservation power couple Brendan and Danelle Murray, will premiere on BBC Earth (channel 184 DStv) at 6 pm today!!!

Produced by PD Production, Owl Rescue SA shines a light on the incredible work that is done by Owl Rescue Centre, a non-profit conservation organisation in South Africa.

With the rapid rise of urbanisation throughout South Africa, and especially in Johannesburg and its surroundings, the relationship between owls and humans has become volatile. In the show, misunderstood animals such as owls, and other wild creatures, find themselves in life-threatening and precarious situations, and in desperate need of a helping hand when their habitats overlap with those of humans.

Owl Rescue Centre, founded and run by husband and wife Brendan and Danelle Murray, aims to rescue and rehabilitate owls that fall victim to these situations; whether it’s a spotted eagle owl trapped in a toilet paper factory, baby barn owls that need to be relocated from a cell phone tower, or simply caring for and rearing of orphaned fledglings that have lost their parents as victims of persecution, through the ignorance of cultural beliefs.

For the past 15 years Owl Rescue Centre, based in Hartebeespoort Dam in the North West province, has focused its attention on the well-being of South Africa’s wild owl population. Among thousands of successful owl rescues, the Centre also rescues and rehabilitates other wild animals including porcupines, peacocks, serval cats, otters and many more. The list seems to grow longer with each passing day. Owl Rescue SA will give viewers a first-hand look at some of these rescues.

Nico Nel, Producer of Owl Rescue SA, notes that being able to shine a light on the selfless work being done by Owl Rescue Centre is incredibly rewarding.

“To be able to produce a show that really makes a difference to a community, and to create something tangible that enriches people’s lives, is really any producer’s dream. Producing Owl Rescue SA has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever been part of and we’re extremely excited to share the journey with both local and international BBC Earth viewers,” says Nel.

Pierre Cloete, Commercial Director at BBC Studios in Africa says “I am thrilled to bring another high quality, local production to audiences in Africa. From the talented team behind the Listing Series’ on BBC Lifestyle, this powerful documentary will shine a light on the incredible conservation work carried out in our country. The 10-part series is yet another BBC Earth series that the whole family can enjoy together!”

“It has been such a humbling experience to work with and film two passionate, selfless conservationists. Every rescue is treated with the same importance, and no effort was spared to save a patient,” adds Trevor Kaplan, co-producer of Owl Rescue SA.

Tune in to the premiere of Owl Rescue SA on Saturday 11 March 2023 at 18h00 on BBC Earth (DStv channel 184), with new episodes every Saturday at 18h00, also available on DStv catch-up.

Hello, Wisconsin! That ’90s Show is coming to Netflix on January 19 and the old gang is making a special appearance!

Global (23 December 2022) – The creators of That ’90s Show were keeping a little secret… the original cast of The ’70 Show is returning for the new show!

Yup, Topher Grace, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher, Laura Prepon, and Wilmer Valderrama will all appear as special guests in the new Netflix show!

That ’90s Show is an upcoming American television period teen sitcom set in 1995, featuring characters and locales who debuted in its predecessor.

“It’s 1995 and Leia Forman is desperate for some adventure in her life or at least a best friend who isn’t her dad. When she arrives in Point Place to visit her grandparents, Red and Kitty, Leia finds what she’s looking for right next door when she meets the dynamic and rebellious Gwen. With the help of Gwen’s friends, including her lovable brother Nate, his smart, laser-focused girlfriend Nikki, the sarcastic and insightful Ozzie, and the charming Jay, Leia realizes adventure could happen there just like it did for her parents all those years ago. Excited to reinvent herself, she convinces her parents to let her stay for the summer. With a basement full of teens again, Kitty is happy the Forman house is now a home for a new generation and Red is, well…Red.”

It is set to premiere on Netflix on January 19, 2023.
