Senior shelter dog Ray has waited almost half his lifetime for a forever home. But, just a day ago, his wait came to a heartwarming end as he joined a new family at long last!

Fourways, South Africa (15 October 2024) — It’s been a long road home for senior dog Ray, who has waited nearly five years for a family to call his own. But, as the saying goes, ‘Every dog has its day’, and Ray’s day came at long last ever so recently when the senior good boy was finally picked as the perfect addition to a new family!

Ray was born in 2015; which means by the time his wait began, he was already an older dog. And when you’re an older dog, every month (never mind, every year) counts significantly in a shelter.

Choosing to adopt senior dogs takes a special kind of family. It means patience and the acceptance that you won’t have all that long with them. But man, oh man, is there something to be said about giving a dog—who has waited a huge part of their life for a home—their golden years in full glory.

Ray will get to enjoy the rest of his days with a big garden, ‘two doting humans’ and even a furry girlfriend called Jazz, as his former shelter Paws R Us: SA happily share.

For his shelter, which is based in Fourways, Ray’s adoption by Maureen and Peter mattered not just for the pooch but the fate of their shelter as a whole.

As the shelter explains, they are currently facing a ‘race against time’. Because their boarding facility is a private business and will reach its peak capacity in December and January, their shelter dogs need to move to create space for more incoming ‘client dogs’. As such, they have upped the ante on their adoption posts immensely.

Their goal is to get down to 60 dogs by 1 December should their wishes for multiple adoptions be granted.

As such, they are calling on dog lovers across Gauteng to spread the word about their dogs in need of a home. Some of these pooches are like Ray and have waited a lifetime to leave camp.

Whether this means playing foster parent, simply sharing the news with someone looking to add a pooch to their lives or adopting yourself, the more people who get involved and connect dogs in need to their communities, the better!

A violin stolen over two years ago has finally made its way back to its owner! An instrument of immense sentimental value, the violin was the last gift Petrus de Beer received from his mother before she passed away.

Cape Town, South Africa (07 October 2024) — A violin has finally made its way home after over two years spent missing from its original owner, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal first violin, Petrus de Beer.

Stolen in July 2022 from the boot of Petrus’ car in Cape Town, the moment the violin was discovered to be gone, a gaping hole formed in the violinist’s heart.

Not simply a case of missing a musical instrument, this violin held immense sentimental value for Petrus. After all, it was the very last gift he had received from his mother before she passed away.

Despite a determined search for his beloved violin that took matters to both the police and the media, the violin would become a missing case for two more winters.

Unbeknownst to Petrus, the violin had embarked on a journey of its own. As the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra shares, the violin had ended up as an item for sale at a local flea market all those months ago, which is how it found its way to the people who’d eventually spur the reunion—Wally and Beatrice van Staden.

One day, as the pair was cleaning out their belongings in preparation for a move, the van Staden’s decided to Google the value of the violin. Unexpectedly, this took them down a rabbit hole that would eventually lead to Petrus!

Last month, on 8 September, Petrus got to relish in the moment that at one point seemed impossible—reuniting with his violin. In an extra sprinkle of serendipity, this reunion just so happened to be on the anniversary of his mother’s death 13 years before.

Immersed with the kind of joy that only a happy ending can fill one with, Petrus decided to pay the experience forward. He has since donated another violin of sentimental value (the violin that started his career) to the Youth Orchestra’s student Corban Beukes, a budding 16-year-old musician from Brackenfell who got to play his new violin for the first time over the weekend!

Joburgers united behind Mr Gooby to find the SPCA Randburg’s longest resident a home. Now, we’re happy to report that this SPCA ‘old boy’ has found his new family!

Johannesburg, South Africa (06 September 2024) — Recently, Good Things Guy, along with many other South Africans, were immensely heartsore to learn that Mr Gooby, a dog dubbed the SPCA Randburg’s ‘longest resident’, had still not found his next home.

Initially, Mr Gooby had been surrendered to the SPCA Randburg due to the fact that his former family could no longer look after him, Lyndall Ngwenya of the SPCA tells Good Things Guy. Mr Gooby would stay on with the SPCA for several lengthy weeks, dishearteningly watching numerous other animals leave before him.

When Mr Gooby’s story was shared and his search for a home put on social media’s radar, Joburgers who could not take him on themselves united in a most uplifting display to share the pooch’s situation, spreading his message far and wide with 3,500 shares!

In a heartwarming turn of events for the SPCA’s ‘old boy’, Mr Gooby’s happy ending has come at last and he has finally found a home thanks to a young couple in Fairlands.

The SPCA Randburg reports that they have received feedback that Mr Gooby has settled in well with his new family.

Now, his story stands as an important reminder for all—even if you can’t adopt, you can spread the word and make a massive difference.

In other news of happy endings for dogs, Sharky the puppy, who received no applications for his adoption time and time again, also found his forever home recently.

And if you’ve got the adoption itch, there’s an upcoming adoption event happening in Cape Town tomorrow where you might just meet your next puppy!

When a broken telephone scenario hilariously revealed two ‘pitbulls’ who had found their way to a business property to be slightly different upon arrival, the SPCA Midrand embarked on a legendary rescue.

Midrand, South Africa (04 September 2024) — We’ve all been on the wrong end of a broken telephone before—even heroes. For the SPCA Midrand, such a call led to a most curious situation after two ‘pitbulls’ were revealed to be nothing of the sort and rather two business bulls!

As the SPCA Midrand shares, “At times, our cell reception dips, especially when taking calls out on the road, and on this particular call, we had a good giggle for a while afterwards.

“A call comes in for two pitbulls roaming inside a business property. We ask the caller if they are able to confine them in their office until we arrive. The confused caller says there is noooo way they can fit them into their office. We simply could not understand why…”

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the poor caller was gazing upon two bulls who had stopped by for reasons unknown (a cowculated meeting? Perhaps business was bullish, and they wanted in?).

Nonetheless, when the team went out to assess the situation, they couldn’t have been more surprised to see that there were no pitbulls in sight.

Jumping into action, the team was able to source a large horse trailer thanks to a lot of kindness and began the process of getting the bulls on the moove.

An anonymous donor also contributed 90 bales of lovegrass (Eragrostis) for the business bulls to enjoy (maybe there is such a thing as a free lunch!).

In more good news for the bulls beyond being safely in the SPCA’s care, one of them was revealed to have a large abscess and is now able to receive treatment thanks to the rescue.

While the initial miscommunication resulted in a lot of laughter, the SPCA shares that it’s also a reminder for the public to contact their office at 011 265 9935 during office hours when they are in need of assistance.

“Our inspectors are out on the road and not only does it put them at risk when taking calls, these miscommunications can also occur as they are focused on other animals or driving.”

The next time you’re afraid to go to the dentist, keep in mind that even leopards have to brave dental work sometimes! Bagheera, the leopard, recently underwent an action-packed journey back into the wild in a story that involves a stolen cow, an upset farmer, leopard root canals and many kind people.

North West, South Africa (03 September 2024) — Most leopards won’t ever have to face one of the most frightening experiences humankind has to offer—a trip to the dentist. However, one male leopard named Bagheera wasn’t quite so lucky after getting his paws on a cow, which didn’t go quite as planned for the big cat.

During the heart of winter, Bagheera had seemingly successfully stolen a cow from a farmer in the North West. However, once he was discovered as the cow culprit, Bagheera found himself caught in a ‘predator trap’—a steel number that left him in unchartered and uncomfortable territory.

However, Bagheera’s luck hadn’t run out just yet. Soon, the Owl Rescue Centre (which has been involved in thousands of rescues and relocations this year alone, including Chunkywon the hippo) were alerted to his plight and were on the road to his rescue.

It was still a much longer road until Bagheera could be released back home into the wild, largely due to the mother of all inconveniences—tooth problems. While in rehab with Professor Steenkamp, it became apparent that Bagheera’s pearly whites had sustained damage during the steel trap ordeal, meaning that he needed a root canal urgently.

As many of us who have been on the necessity end of a root canal know first-hand, the costs are not kind (even if you’re a leopard). On top of this, Bagheera also needed a special collar—one his rescuers dubbed a ‘parole collar’—so that he could be tracked. This way, the team are able to virtually follow the animal’s movements and make sure he stays out of traps and trouble.

But, thanks to the ever-determined animal-first efforts of the Owl Rescue Centre’s team and a local radio station, Bagheera’s R46,000 bill was raised with some spare change for coffee—just in time for the cat to get back into action ahead of spring.

Bagheera was released in early August in a happy ending for all involved and the team have kept a close eye on him since.

Sharky, the little Joburg puppy with a smile like no other, has found his forever home at long last after no one applied to adopt the poor pooch. Needless to say, his smile is even bigger these days!

Johannesburg, South Africa (30 August 2024) — The shark that barks, little Sharky the puppy with a smile like no other, has found his forever home at last!

It was “the best news ever” for the Pet Empowerment in Townships Johannesburg team, who, with great determination and commitment, had been sharing Sharky’s search for a family to call his own.

A young pup who was welcomed into their care earlier this year, Sharky was introduced to the world at the end of June. Although many people part of the PET community rallied behind Sharky (and were a part of his naming process), finding a home wasn’t easy for the toothy pup. In fact, no one had even applied the last time we checked in on Sharks.

Many long weeks would go by, with Sharky waiting in anticipation while being fostered at doggy daycare.

However, Sharky’s story took a wonderful turn when Caryn Kotze decided that the playful pup with loads of personality would be a perfect addition to her family (which includes another rescue from PET, Phonix the pooch).

Few things warm our hearts quite as much as happy tails like this. If you’re feeling inspired to change the life of a dog in need, you can check PET out here.

Meanwhile, in other stories where a dog in need of a forever home has stolen the internet’s hearts, Mr Gooby, the SPCA Randburg’s longest resident, has been on many Joburger’s minds. Now, all he needs is one family to welcome him into their home and hearts!

After a tourist hiker found himself unintentionally taking the trail less travelled and ended up above a cliff, a powerhouse rescue team stepped in to get him down safely!

Cape Town, South Africa (08 July 2024) — A tourist hiker from Australia found himself unknowingly taking the road less travelled down Table Mountain recently, leading him to a story from his travels we’re sure he won’t soon forget. Luckily, his story comes with a happy ending!

According to the Mountain Club of South Africa and Wilderness Search and Rescue (WSAR), the ordeal took place on Wednesday last week when the 28-year-old tourist hiker headed out for the mountain trails from Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens in the afternoon.

The Australian was reportedly following the guidance of a trail app, but soon found that the recommended route he intended to follow through (Nursery Buttress), was very tough given the wet landscape and the weather conditions, causing delays in his adventure.

“On the way down, he got into a difficult position off the main trail network, where continuing down would have been unsafe. At this point he was above a small cliff on Nursery Buttress,” reported the Mountain Club of SA.

It was then he had to make a decision—attempt to brave it out and get down himself in the dark, or ask for help. Thankfully, he chose the latter.

The Wilderness Search and Rescue team were ready and able to assist, getting to his position expertly. A rescue climber played a big role in his rescue by climbing up the cliff before the tourist hiker was lowered down via a neat harness.

Thanks to their efforts, he made it back to the Gardens in the thick of the night—safe, sound and surrounded by an amazing effort from the local people who assisted him.

But, this is also a cautionary tale.

The WSAR’s spokesperson David Nel has encouraged hikers to be very cautious with their adventures in hectic weather, while the Mountain Club of SA shared that hikers should not “blindly follow” trail apps.

“Rather, check on the level of difficulty and risk of a trail before following [the] trail on a small, deceptively flat-looking mobile application screen, or stick to the popular regular trails on the mountain.

“This is particularly true for Table Mountain, where a large proportion of trails that have started to be included on trail apps fall into the “expert only”/ “not recommended for general hikers” category.”

Motorists encountered a super stressful traffic stopper yesterday as a panicked horse ran loose in the midst of two streams of traffic. Luckily, care and compassion led him to safety:

Cape Town (18 August, 2023)—Yesterday afternoon, rush hour traffic travellers witnessed a distressing ‘traffic stopper’: a horse on the loose running panicked along the M5 inbound.

To make matters more hectic for the horse and concerned motorists, the horse had training equipment attached to him as he trotted forward between two very busy roads.

Luckily, people alerted the Cape of Good Hope SPCA to the situation so that the horse could be handled with care. While their team raced against the horse’s pace to get to to the area in time, a compassionate bystander stepped up to calm the horse down.

By the time the helpful teams arrived (5 inspectors and the Cape of Good Hope SPCA’s Chief Inspector), the horse had taken a break due to an injury to the leg. Thankfully, he was in the calming company of the compassionate bystander at that point.

First aid was applied as soon as possible, before the horse ended his Thursday on the loose by stepping into a horse box and heading to safer pastures at the SPCA’s Horse Care Unit.

According to the Cape of Good Hope SPCA, investigations indicated that the horse was being trained before getting loose.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to the members of the public who stopped to help, Cape Town Traffic Services who closed the road enabling us to work safely and all the motorists on the M5 for the patience and consideration for a horse in trouble.”—The Cape of Good Hope SPCA.

After a missing hiker was found stuck along the tricky trail Skeleton Gorge, Good Samaritan hikers helped get her to safety.

Skeleton Gorge, South Africa (04 July, 2023) — Thanks to the vigilance of two Good Samaritan hikers exploring Skeleton Gorge, an injured traveller who’d been reported missing was found!

Over the weekend, the 22-year-old visitor trekking solo had plans to travel from the Great Gorge to Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden. As anyone who has hiked Skeleton Gorge knows, the trail is known for being tricky and slippery, which unfortunately landed the tourist hiker in an unfortunate position.

Whilst attempting to descend a ladder in the Gorge she slipped and fall, injuring herself to a state where she couldn’t continue the journey.

Luckily, two other hikers came across her struggle and called for help immediately. Though it’s unclear how long she was trapped for, it was a great stroke of luck that the hikers passed by when they did!

After their paths crossed, the Good Samaritan hikers realised there was little they could do to help the injured explorer and so they quickly contacted the Wilderness Search and Rescue for professional assistance.

Unknowingly to those on the trail, the injured visitor had also been reported missing on Table Mountain; making her finding that much more of a relief.

As coordinator Tim Lundy shares:

“The patient information sounded similar, and once team members found the injured hiker in Skeleton Gorge, we were able to confirm that she was the person who’d been reported missing.”

Thanks to the strangers who found her and the teams, the missing trailblazer was found and on her way to healing in the same breath shortly after midnight.

“She’s incredibly lucky and we thank the Good Samaritans for their kind actions.

“This incident illustrates how important it is that everyone knows how to contact Wilderness Search And Rescue in any wilderness emergency. A big thank you to our teams of rescuers who continue to contribute to wilderness safety in the Western Cape. We wish the patient a speedy recovery”, concluded WSAR Spokesperson David Nel.

A dog mom had to give up her beloved Hunter because of very tough circumstances. From a distance, she still sent him love and gifts until he found a new forever home. Hunter didn’t get a new home. Instead, he got something even better.

Gauteng, South Africa (09 June, 2023) — When Arlene Van Staden made the decision to part with her beloved dog Hunter, it marked one of the toughest days for both of them.

Due to hard circumstances in her life, Arlene did what she thought was best for her good boy and so she reached out to Bull Terrier, Adora-Bull Rescue and Rehabilitation to give him a better life until she could.

Arlene promised that she would take Hunter back in a heartbeat when her circumstances changed and “she was back on track emotionally and financially,” as Adora-Bull shared.

However, the option for Hunter to be rehomed and find new parents was on the table. It was a heartbreaking thought, but one that Arlene was willing to accept if her life didn’t turn around before then.

Throughout the separation, Arlene sent Hunter all the love she could as well as gifts and spoils, never giving up on him even if it meant being in his life from a distance.

Over a year would go by, and Hunter would remain with Adora-Bull. He didn’t get an offer to be part of a new family. Instead, he got something even better.

Last Saturday, Arlene stopped by for more than a hello. She’d found Hunter’s next home—back with her.

“Both human and dog’s dream came true. It was all meant to be as Arlene and Hunter were reunited,”—shared the Adora-Bull team.

The two started their new life together in a heartwarming moment that has us all chopping onions, with Arlene sharing that it was the best day of her life in one year, one month and 6 days.

The Adora-Bull team is always on the lookout to help bullies in need. Find out more about their awesome initiatives (including virtual adoptions).
