“This is not the South Africa I know”. A video of snow in Sutherland has sent the internet into a frenzy after it boggled social media users’ minds that such an extreme winter wonderland could possibly exist in our country and caused Saffers to bargain for better versions of winter in their provinces:
Sutherland, South Africa (09 July 2024) — It’s flipping cold in South Africa at the moment (par a few slightly luckier spots along warmer coastlines). For most of us, multiple layers of clothes are a daily essential, the hot water bottles are out and proud, and we’re all holding scrapbooks of warm summer memories close to our hearts.
But some parts of South Africa are not just talking the icy talk, they’re exhibiting it. And a video of Sutherland in the Northern Cape is wearing the term ‘winter wonderland’ in a very literal fashion (and blowing locals’ minds that this could possibly be in South Africa, at that).
Two days ago, one local user named Kayleigh took to TikTok to share what she woke up to in South Africa. The clip, which showcased an outdoor area drenched in snowfall, long drives fit for Santa’s sleigh and snow angels, received almost 500,000 views, with many South Africans marvelling over the snowy delights.
While some users shared that “this is not the South Africa [they] know”, others hoped that the cold fronts in their areas (like Johannesburg) might bring the same sense of Christmas in July. Others from areas in KwaZulu-Natal openly confessed that they had nothing but blue skies to gaze at, while those in Cape Town grunted at all the gloomy skies without the snow to make it all worth it.
While areas like Sutherland and Matroosberg are known for snowfall this time of year, South Africans in other provinces couldn’t help but hope their areas step up.
“Manifesting in Joburg come on guys we can manifest together”, wrote one user.
“Just looked at my province and sighed” another shared.
“Meanwhile me in Gauteng: why not me??” another commented.
