South African comedian Themba Robin has done it again, leaving the nation in stitches with his latest viral skit—this time hilariously pitching the controversial pandemic “Ambulance Scooters” on Dragons Den UK in a side-splitting spoof that perfectly captures our unique sense of humour.

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 October 2024) – South Africans are no strangers to turning challenging situations into moments of laughter and this latest video by local comedian Themba Robin is a shining example of that spirit.

In a hilarious twist, Themba took to the global stage of Dragons’ Den UK (well, sort of) to pitch the now-famous “Ambulance Scooters”—and the internet can’t stop laughing!

Known for his witty skits and comedic genius, Themba has gained a huge following on social media for his ability to tackle everyday issues with humour that resonates deeply with South Africans. Whether it’s poking fun at load shedding or doing parody interviews, his content always delivers a much-needed laugh.

And, once again, he isn’t disappointing us!

In his latest comedic masterpiece, Themba spliced real footage from Dragons’ Den UK, inserting himself into the scene as an enthusiastic entrepreneur pitching a wild idea—Ambulance Scooters. For those unfamiliar, the concept of ambulance scooters was introduced during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa. These scooters, “designed” to navigate through congested areas more quickly than traditional ambulances, sparked a lot of controversy, with many questioning their practicality and effectiveness. While some (mostly in government) saw it as a necessary solution in a time of crisis, others couldn’t help but poke fun at the idea.

Of course, Themba’s take on it is pure gold! In the video, he confidently pitches the scooters to the Dragons, highlighting their “sleek” design and “innovative” purpose. The result? A mash-up of serious business talk and absurdity that had viewers crying with laughter. The editing is so spot-on that it feels as though the Dragons are genuinely (not) considering this offbeat pitch.

The video has gone viral, and the reaction on social media is priceless!

“My aunt sleeps with the Minister of Transport….. I’m on the floor.”

“Only a true South African could understand this humour.”

“This made my day! 😂 Us South Africans survive on humour!”

“That almost made me pee my pants!”

So, if you’re in need of a good laugh today, do yourself a favour and watch the video—it’s guaranteed to brighten your day and leave you in stitches.

It’s official: James Blunt fans have decided on his new name, but they still need to make his album ‘Back to Bedlam’ reach number one on the charts for him to actually change his legal name.

Global (14 October 2024) – If you missed it, James Blunt set a challenge for his fans to get his album ‘Back to Bedlam’, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this month, to the top of the charts. As a reward for his efforts, he legally changed his name to whatever the masses voted for.

The album, which has fan favourites like ‘You’re Beautiful’, ‘Goodbye My Lover’ and ‘High’, has been reproduced in honour of the anniversary, and the goal is to get it to number one by the end of October.

Naturally, it can be found on all major streaming services, so if you are keen to get in on the fun – start listening right this moment, and very soon, James won’t be James anymore!

It really is clever marketing! So then… What is the new name?

Well, the votes are in, and the name everyone has chosen is “Blunty McBluntface”.

The people have spoken! While we agree that the imagination for this one was slightly lacking (we are still team James Beige), it’s so wholesome seeing James engage with his fans in such a funny manner. The world needs more public figures who are not scared to have a bit of fun on social media.

Irish musician Garron Noone embarked on a hilarious culinary adventure of South Africa’s most iconic snacks. His journey was filled with laughter, confusion, and a whole lot of chewing!

Dublin, Ireland (08 October 2024) – Whether sweet or savoury, there is nothing quite like a lekker snack to feed a random craving, enjoy game day with friends or just see you through a really long day.

Indulging himself in South Africa’s unique treats was Irish musician and comedian Garron Noone, who had us laughing out loud after sharing his experience of our unique flavours, which completely caught his pallet off-guard!

In the funny video, Garron starts off by tasting dry sausage, known to us as droëwors, which he admitted he was most afraid of. Describing it as extremely chewy, Garron said it was a powerful attack of meat on the tongue but was a fan of it nonetheless.

He gave biltong a go next and advised his friends planning a trip to South Africa to bring their strongest chewing muscles.

He washed down the meaty snacks with a Spar-Letta cream soda, whose bright green hue caught him off guard.

“There’s definitely some artificial colouring there. That does not look like a natural green colour. It’s delicious. Tastes like cream soda. Tastes absolutely nothing like it looks. So it’s a bit of a culture shock when you’re looking at it.”

Garron completed his culinary adventure with some sweet goodness, the koeksister – whose pronunciation he hilariously butchered, by the way!

He wasn’t sure what to compare it to, likening it to a gooey fruit or a Danish of sorts.

“I have absolutely no idea what it is. A kind of oily pastry that’s been dipped in a sugary syrup. It’s nice. It’s confusing but it’s got flavour. One of the weirdest things I’ve ever held in my hand and now it’s in my body. I’m a fan of this,” he shared hilariously.

The post’s comments section was riddled with banter and funny commentary from social media users who were amused by the Irishman’s take on the local snacks.

Well, our food may have given him quite the culture shock but at least it was a good one, LOL!

Bouwer Bosch and Themba Robin are back with more hilarity, this time for a series of adverts with Payflex, and it took more than “phree” takes to get it right.

South Africa (03 October 2024) – Friends and comedy duo Bouwer Bosch and Themba Robin just keep bringing the funny! They have teamed up with Payflex to promote the new ‘Pay in 3’ campaign, but Bouwer really struggled to get his pronunciations right. The hilarious duo took their friendship to a new level, and it left us giggling!

To promote the launch of Pay in 3, Payflex worked with South Africa’s much-loved comedy duo to explain how Payflex Pay in 3 works.

Payflex is South Africa’s largest independent Buy Now Pay Later provider; it enables shoppers to get what they want now and pay later, interest and fee-free. With Pay Now, Pay in 4, and the newly launched Pay in 3, they have become SA’s most flexible payment provider.

To get the message out there, Payflex has shared a creative advert series that has South Africa laughing. From the first take to the last, Bouwer gave them all grey hairs. However, the outcome is beautiful!

Take one; Bouwer tries to explain that Pay in 3 allows online shoppers to split their purchase payments into three interest-free payments. Let’s just say the take really tests Themba’s patience.

Realising the struggles Bouwer was facing, Themba got creative for take two, drawing up a few ‘sub-titles’ to help advert viewers get the message.

And finally, we have a winner! Sort of…

The concept of Buy Now, Pay Later is still relatively new to the South African market. Payflex shares that it differs from traditional payment options such as credit cards and lay-bys as it has shorter repayment periods without the hefty interest rates and fees like conventional credit models; in fact, there are no interest fees at all!

How does Pay in 3 work?

First, you’ll need a Payflex account. The good news is that it only takes 2 minutes to set up. Registering for Payflex only requires a South African ID number and a valid bank account.

You can then shop online at stores such as Takealot or Superbalist and make your payment in three interest-free instalments.

It’s a no-brainer. Instead of paying for an item in full and upfront, you can split your payments and have extra cash available for life’s other pleasures.

You can sign up for your Payflex account here.

The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards remind us that laughter—especially when inspired by the quirky antics of animals—has the power to brighten our days and inspire us to care for the creatures we share this planet with.

Global (03 October 2024) – There’s something about a good laugh that brightens even the gloomiest day. Whether it’s a goofy animal face or a candid, comical moment captured in the wild, the joy of laughter reminds us of the happiness that surrounds us—even in the animal kingdom.

In between life’s challenges, the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards offer a delightful reminder that humour transcends barriers, connecting us to nature in unexpected ways.

Founded in 2015 by Paul Joynson-Hicks MBE, the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards are all about bringing smiles to faces while raising awareness for wildlife conservation. It all began when Paul, working as a wildlife photographer in East Africa, stumbled across some particularly hilarious shots in his portfolio—like an eagle peeking at him through its legs and a cheeky warthog flaunting its bottom. These images sparked not only laughter but also an epiphany: humour is a powerful way to engage people with the natural world and the very real threats facing these animals.

And so, the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards were born, transforming what started as a humorous moment into a global movement for wildlife conservation.

Since then, the competition has flourished, inviting submissions from both novice and expert photographers worldwide, all competing to capture those side-splitting moments of animal brilliance. The concept is simple yet profound—funny photos of animals cut through the noise and tug at our hearts, encouraging empathy and connection without the need for words.

Each year, the competition sees a delightful influx of images from across the globe, and South African photographers and wildlife consistently shine. The 2024 edition is no different, with some of the year’s most hilarious and heartwarming entries featuring South Africa’s iconic wildlife in all its glory. From a lioness “kakking out” her husband to a hippo with a “wig” and even a cheetah playing “hide and go seek”, these photographers capture not just the humour of the moment but also the essence of the animals themselves.

You can see all the finalists here.

What makes these photos so effective is their universal appeal. No language barriers. No heavy message to unpack. Just pure, unfiltered joy that brings people together.

As Paul Joynson-Hicks puts it, “To really understand animals and the issues that affect them, you need to empathize with them as fellow inhabitants of the same planet.”

And these photos do just that. By showcasing the lighter side of wildlife, the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards invite us to laugh while also gently encouraging us to care for these creatures and their environments.

But it’s not all fun and games. Behind the laughs is a mission to educate and raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation.

As co-founder Tom Sullam explains, “Through the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards, we aim to widen understanding and engagement of a sustainable world—and wildlife conservation specifically—for the preservation of biodiversity and the health and enrichment of everyone on Earth.”

It’s a bold mission, but one that’s making a difference, year by year, smile by smile.

And so, as the 2024 competition begins to wrap up, we can only smile at the thought of the next batch of hilarious, lovable, and downright silly animal antics that will soon grace our screens. Because if there’s one thing the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards have proven, it’s that laughter is truly contagious—and when it’s sparked by nature, it can change the world.

South Africans continue to lead the way in creativity, and Donovan Goliath’s latest campaign with Kreepy Krauly proves just that—delivering a heartwarming, hilarious spoof that’s taken the internet by storm, hitting 1.8 million views in just one weekend!

Johannesburg, South Africa (25 September 2024) – South Africans are renowned for their creativity, and once again, we’ve proven that our advertising and influencer marketing are world-class.

The latest example of this brilliance comes from comedian and actor Donovan Goliath, whose latest video with Kreepy Krauly has captured the hearts of the nation, racking up over 1.8 million views on TikTok in just one weekend!

Kreepy Krauly is an iconic South African pool cleaner, synonymous with backyard fun, family time, and keeping pools spotless during our long, sun-drenched summers. With the festive season (which is all about Summer in South Africa) on the horizon, Kreepy Krauly decided to partner with Donovan and his adorable real-life daughter, Sophia, to create a heartwarming and hilarious spoof on the popular “Elf on the Shelf” tradition.

The result? “Kreepy Krauly on the Wally” – a uniquely South African take that’s as funny as it is endearing.

The partnership and video were the brainchild of Mike Sharman from Retroviral, a good friend to the Good Things Guy and a mastermind in the world of creative advertising. Sharman’s touch is unmistakable – combining wit, charm, and local flavour into a campaign that speaks directly to South African hearts.

In the video, young Sophia pleads with her dad to participate in the popular Elf on the Shelf game, a tradition loved by kids worldwide. But Donovan, with his comedic charm, gently steers her towards a better, homegrown alternative. His suggestion? Krauly on the Wally – and from there, the fun begins!

You can watch it here:

Hermias Nel, Managing Director of Kreepy Krauly, shared the thought process behind the campaign.

“We needed a remarkable commercial both to cut through the clutter and to communicate that your Kreepy Krauly is customisable this summer.”

And remarkable it is – filled with laugh-out-loud moments and family warmth, it’s no wonder the video has struck a chord with so many viewers.

Donovan himself was thrilled to be part of the project, saying, “I loved the script because it comprises these beautiful moments of our girl-dad immersing himself in his daughter’s imaginative play.”

“From tea parties with KK to chilling out watching content on the couch, we pushed the humour of the environments in which we saw the pool cleaner, in order to lean into the metaphor that Kreepy Krauly is a literal part of the South African family,” Goliath added.

And it’s true – the Kreepy Krauly has long been a fixture in many South African homes, and this commercial beautifully encapsulates that relationship.

One of the standout moments in the video – and Goliath’s personal favourite – is the quintessentially South African scene of him braaiing with KK, who hilariously holds a pair of tongs, cooking wors alongside Donovan.

“It’s a quintessential South African moment and it signals the build-up to Dezemba, the greatest time on the SA calendar,” Goliath said, perfectly summing up the festive vibes the video captures.

With over 1.8 million views in just a weekend, it’s clear that this creative collaboration has been a massive hit. Not only does it bring joy and laughter, but it also shines a light on the local talent and products that make South Africa so special.

One of South Africa’s favourite words, ‘Beer boep’, has officially been added to the Oxford English Dictionary!

Global (20 September 2024) — The Oxford English Dictionary is enjoying beer-soaked updates to its latest edition just in time for Oktoberfest (AKA, the most important date on any beer lover’s calendar).

Although the word beer has been around for as long as the amber beverage has (appearing in lots of Old English sources), it has been adapted to fill pints of different experiences and descriptions.

Particularly for former British colonies, including New Zealand, Australia, and our own South Africa, beer is quite the celebrity beverage across social and cultural occasions. So, it’s no surprise that the word has transformed into everything from an activity like ‘beer-up’ all the way to the noun, ’beer hound’ (someone who drinks beer a little too enthusiastically, a little too often). A famous South African term has been added to the updated list—‘beer boep’!

The official definition per the Oxford Dictionary describes ‘beer boep’ as a noun that’s often depreciative It’s defined as: A protuberant belly or paunch [especially] on a man, attributed to beer consumption.”

While most South Africans just say boep (or if you’re in my father’s darts club, ‘boepies’), it’s exciting to see one of our country’s favourite words claim a space in the dictionary and potentially travel across the world because ‘beer belly’ simply doesn’t have the same zest.

Other freshly added official beer-related words include ‘beeriness’, having a ‘beer coat’ or ‘beer blanket’ (feeling somewhat immune to the cold thanks to the alcohol) and even ‘beer off’, which, to the disappointment of many, does not describe duel by beer but rather a name for parts of England where alcohol is sold for consumption off the premises.

Fans of ‘The Office’, get ready for a local spin of the only show that’s ever made people want to work at a dull paper company! South Africa’s version has officially been announced, set to be filmed in Afrikaans.

South Africa (05 September 2024) — There are two types of people in the world—those who are die hard fans of ‘The Office’ and those who have been meaning to jump on the bandwagon. If you fall into either category, we’ve got all the more reason for you to indulge in the show (even if it is for the umpteenth time!).

In news that will make South African fans as giddy as the Dunder Mifflin staff when they get to leave work early, a South African spin of the hit show has been announced to be in the works!

Set to be locally produced, Showmax has announced a new format agreement that will see the BBC Studios’ famed mockumentary—created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant—to be re-envisioned with South African flair.

This will also make for the first African version of ‘The Office’, following several other international adaptations that range from France to Chile and India to Poland.

While the actual filming part is still very much just a twinkle in the eye, 2025 will reportedly mark the start of production for the yet-to-be-named show.

It’s also been revealed that the South African spin will primarily be filmed in Afrikaans and will be ‘hyperlocalised’—leaving much to the imagination of how the show will unfold (just imagine an Afrikaans version of Dwight or a dancing security guard for that matter).

We also know that the show will be accessible on kykNET, as well as on Showmax.

When a broken telephone scenario hilariously revealed two ‘pitbulls’ who had found their way to a business property to be slightly different upon arrival, the SPCA Midrand embarked on a legendary rescue.

Midrand, South Africa (04 September 2024) — We’ve all been on the wrong end of a broken telephone before—even heroes. For the SPCA Midrand, such a call led to a most curious situation after two ‘pitbulls’ were revealed to be nothing of the sort and rather two business bulls!

As the SPCA Midrand shares, “At times, our cell reception dips, especially when taking calls out on the road, and on this particular call, we had a good giggle for a while afterwards.

“A call comes in for two pitbulls roaming inside a business property. We ask the caller if they are able to confine them in their office until we arrive. The confused caller says there is noooo way they can fit them into their office. We simply could not understand why…”

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the poor caller was gazing upon two bulls who had stopped by for reasons unknown (a cowculated meeting? Perhaps business was bullish, and they wanted in?).

Nonetheless, when the team went out to assess the situation, they couldn’t have been more surprised to see that there were no pitbulls in sight.

Jumping into action, the team was able to source a large horse trailer thanks to a lot of kindness and began the process of getting the bulls on the moove.

An anonymous donor also contributed 90 bales of lovegrass (Eragrostis) for the business bulls to enjoy (maybe there is such a thing as a free lunch!).

In more good news for the bulls beyond being safely in the SPCA’s care, one of them was revealed to have a large abscess and is now able to receive treatment thanks to the rescue.

While the initial miscommunication resulted in a lot of laughter, the SPCA shares that it’s also a reminder for the public to contact their office at 011 265 9935 during office hours when they are in need of assistance.

“Our inspectors are out on the road and not only does it put them at risk when taking calls, these miscommunications can also occur as they are focused on other animals or driving.”

Another dancing traffic officer has stolen the road show with fine-tuned, subtle moves that scream demure and ‘I’m just waiting for Tyla to see this’.

Port Elizabeth, South Africa (02 September 2024) — We’re not sure if there’s a dance-led incentive programme going around for traffic officers in South Africa, but if there isn’t, there should be. Another dancing traffic officer has busted out all the “very demure” moves; revealed to be the kind of cop who consistently makes Port Elizabeth’s mornings that much better.

After TikTok user ‘BJaded’ shared a clip of the cop adding, “There are people who wake up like this” in reference to his early morning moves, it wasn’t long until fellow Eastern Cape drivers (and South Africans in general) had a field day filled with feel-good notions in the comment section.

@bjaded79 Give me what he had for breakfast 😫 #tiktoksouthafrica #goodmorning #fypシ゚viral #foryou #bjaded79 ♬ TGIF – GloRilla

Something about the subtle hip rolls and his seemingly choreographed direction made all drivers feel a little better about life. With efficient sass and traffic control to boast, we’re not sure if this officer will do a world tour of South African intersections or end up as a backup dancer for the likes of Tyla!

South Africans React to the Demure Dancing Cop

“When SABC3 said the stage is yours, he said ‘say less’.”

“Love this uncle, he makes my day even when I’m late.”

“I love our country, this would set my tone for my entire day.”

“I look forward to seeing him every time I’m in PE”.

“The perfect start to your morning and end of day if he’s on your route, which most take in Port Elizabeth just for him. 100% love this guy. Makes you smile no matter what you going through [at the moment].”

“If I love my job was a person.”

“Just the right amount of sass to get the day started.”
