South African comedian Themba Robin has done it again, leaving the nation in stitches with his latest viral skit—this time hilariously pitching the controversial pandemic “Ambulance Scooters” on Dragons Den UK in a side-splitting spoof that perfectly captures our unique sense of humour.

Johannesburg, South Africa (15 October 2024) – South Africans are no strangers to turning challenging situations into moments of laughter and this latest video by local comedian Themba Robin is a shining example of that spirit.

In a hilarious twist, Themba took to the global stage of Dragons’ Den UK (well, sort of) to pitch the now-famous “Ambulance Scooters”—and the internet can’t stop laughing!

Known for his witty skits and comedic genius, Themba has gained a huge following on social media for his ability to tackle everyday issues with humour that resonates deeply with South Africans. Whether it’s poking fun at load shedding or doing parody interviews, his content always delivers a much-needed laugh.

And, once again, he isn’t disappointing us!

In his latest comedic masterpiece, Themba spliced real footage from Dragons’ Den UK, inserting himself into the scene as an enthusiastic entrepreneur pitching a wild idea—Ambulance Scooters. For those unfamiliar, the concept of ambulance scooters was introduced during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in South Africa. These scooters, “designed” to navigate through congested areas more quickly than traditional ambulances, sparked a lot of controversy, with many questioning their practicality and effectiveness. While some (mostly in government) saw it as a necessary solution in a time of crisis, others couldn’t help but poke fun at the idea.

Of course, Themba’s take on it is pure gold! In the video, he confidently pitches the scooters to the Dragons, highlighting their “sleek” design and “innovative” purpose. The result? A mash-up of serious business talk and absurdity that had viewers crying with laughter. The editing is so spot-on that it feels as though the Dragons are genuinely (not) considering this offbeat pitch.

The video has gone viral, and the reaction on social media is priceless!

“My aunt sleeps with the Minister of Transport….. I’m on the floor.”

“Only a true South African could understand this humour.”

“This made my day! 😂 Us South Africans survive on humour!”

“That almost made me pee my pants!”

So, if you’re in need of a good laugh today, do yourself a favour and watch the video—it’s guaranteed to brighten your day and leave you in stitches.

The Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards remind us that laughter—especially when inspired by the quirky antics of animals—has the power to brighten our days and inspire us to care for the creatures we share this planet with.

Global (03 October 2024) – There’s something about a good laugh that brightens even the gloomiest day. Whether it’s a goofy animal face or a candid, comical moment captured in the wild, the joy of laughter reminds us of the happiness that surrounds us—even in the animal kingdom.

In between life’s challenges, the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards offer a delightful reminder that humour transcends barriers, connecting us to nature in unexpected ways.

Founded in 2015 by Paul Joynson-Hicks MBE, the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards are all about bringing smiles to faces while raising awareness for wildlife conservation. It all began when Paul, working as a wildlife photographer in East Africa, stumbled across some particularly hilarious shots in his portfolio—like an eagle peeking at him through its legs and a cheeky warthog flaunting its bottom. These images sparked not only laughter but also an epiphany: humour is a powerful way to engage people with the natural world and the very real threats facing these animals.

And so, the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards were born, transforming what started as a humorous moment into a global movement for wildlife conservation.

Since then, the competition has flourished, inviting submissions from both novice and expert photographers worldwide, all competing to capture those side-splitting moments of animal brilliance. The concept is simple yet profound—funny photos of animals cut through the noise and tug at our hearts, encouraging empathy and connection without the need for words.

Each year, the competition sees a delightful influx of images from across the globe, and South African photographers and wildlife consistently shine. The 2024 edition is no different, with some of the year’s most hilarious and heartwarming entries featuring South Africa’s iconic wildlife in all its glory. From a lioness “kakking out” her husband to a hippo with a “wig” and even a cheetah playing “hide and go seek”, these photographers capture not just the humour of the moment but also the essence of the animals themselves.

You can see all the finalists here.

What makes these photos so effective is their universal appeal. No language barriers. No heavy message to unpack. Just pure, unfiltered joy that brings people together.

As Paul Joynson-Hicks puts it, “To really understand animals and the issues that affect them, you need to empathize with them as fellow inhabitants of the same planet.”

And these photos do just that. By showcasing the lighter side of wildlife, the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards invite us to laugh while also gently encouraging us to care for these creatures and their environments.

But it’s not all fun and games. Behind the laughs is a mission to educate and raise awareness about the importance of wildlife conservation.

As co-founder Tom Sullam explains, “Through the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards, we aim to widen understanding and engagement of a sustainable world—and wildlife conservation specifically—for the preservation of biodiversity and the health and enrichment of everyone on Earth.”

It’s a bold mission, but one that’s making a difference, year by year, smile by smile.

And so, as the 2024 competition begins to wrap up, we can only smile at the thought of the next batch of hilarious, lovable, and downright silly animal antics that will soon grace our screens. Because if there’s one thing the Comedy Wildlife Photography Awards have proven, it’s that laughter is truly contagious—and when it’s sparked by nature, it can change the world.

Get ready for all the giggles! Themba Robin has taken to the wild (AKA, South Africa’s roads) for a hilarious skit profiling South Africa’s sneakiest predator —the speed camera:

South Africa (25 August 2024) – Comedy legend Themba Robin has left South Africans in stitches once again following one of his latest skits profiling our country’s sneakiest predator—the speed camera.

Not obvious like a pothole or predicable like loadshedding, this relentless beast moves in mysterious and concealed ways. While the speed camera—or the ‘roaming velocitus photographicus’ according to Themba—certainly has its necessary place in the ecosystem of our roads, it is also the nemesis of those running late across the country.

Themba hilariously takes us through an encounter between the roaming velocitus photographicus and ‘the employeus unpunctualus’ amid the ‘7 am herd’ in the kind of wildlife docu-narrative fashion that’d make Sir David Attenborough proud.

A tale of hunter and prey and the odds against the system, Themba’s satire never fails to turn even the most rubble-worthy headache into comedic gold.

Tom Read Wilson’s latest “Phrase of the Day” features a VERY South African swear word, bringing humour and joy to fans worldwide.

Global (20 August 2024) – South Africans are known for their incredible sense of humour, blending sharp wit with a flair for turning everyday expressions into something memorable. Whether it’s through slang or catchy phrases, the Rainbow Nation’s love for language is as diverse as its people.

So, when UK celebrity Tom Read Wilson introduced his “Phrase of the Day” segment, which features phrases from around the world, it’s no surprise that it took the internet by storm.

Tom, the charming and eloquent host of “Celebs Go Dating,” has a knack for making people laugh. With his endearing personality and love for words, Tom has become a beloved figure on social media, where he regularly shares his passion for language through his “Phrase of the Day” videos. These segments, often filled with humour and insightful commentary, have made him a viral sensation. But it was his foray into South African slang that truly captured the hearts of many.

A few weeks ago, Tom took on the phrase “Don’t tune me grief,” an expression many South Africans use to tell someone not to give them a hard time. The video quickly went viral, with fans delighting in Tom’s hilarious and accurate interpretation. His authentic enthusiasm for learning and celebrating South African expressions sparked a wave of suggestions from his followers, who couldn’t wait to see which phrase he would tackle next.

And boy, did Tom deliver! In his latest instalment, Tom chose a phrase that’s as authentically South African as they come—a swear word that is sure to leave you in stitches.

With his signature charm, Tom explained that the phrase “is not as bad as the ‘c’ one but closer, I think, to ‘twat’ and it can be used by telling someone not to be a ‘p**s, be lekker.”

South African UFC champion Dricus du Plessis humorously thanked Drake for the infamous “Drake Curse” after his victory over Israel Adesanya.

Global (19 August 2024) – South Africans are known for their ability to find humour in any situation, and that sense of humour was on full display when Dricus du Plessis, South Africa’s UFC sensation, took to social media to thank Canadian rapper Drake after his recent victory over Israel Adesanya.

The twist? The thank-you wasn’t for any direct support but rather for the “Drake Curse” that, according to some fans, played a crucial role in Du Plessis’ win.

Fresh off his triumphant win at UFC 305, where he defended his middleweight title in spectacular fashion, Du Plessis decided to have a little fun on social media.

In a light-hearted post, he wrote: “Thanks for the support @Drake 😂.”

But this was no ordinary thank-you note. Instead, it was a cheeky nod to the infamous “Drake Curse,” a phenomenon that has haunted athletes and teams for years.

For those unfamiliar, the “Drake Curse” is a widely recognised superstition in the sports world. The curse suggests that any athlete or team publicly backed by Drake is doomed to fail. Over the years, the rapper has inadvertently jinxed a series of high-profile sports events, with his endorsements seemingly leading to shock losses and underwhelming performances.

This past weekend, Drake placed a hefty $450,000 (over R8 million) bet on Israel Adesanya to reclaim his middleweight title from Du Plessis. However, the South African powerhouse had other plans, executing a masterful rear-naked choke in the fourth round to secure his victory, causing Drake to lose. The rapper previously wagered $700,000 (R12 million) on Sean Strickland to successfully defend his middleweight title against Du Plessis. He lost that bet too.

Fans quickly took to social media, pointing fingers at Drake’s involvement, and Du Plessis didn’t miss the opportunity to jump in on the joke.

South Africa is not just celebrating a sports victory but also revelling in the good-natured spirit of its champions. Du Plessis’ playful thank-you tweet is a reminder that, win or lose, it’s essential to keep things lighthearted and to enjoy every moment—especially when you’ve got the whole world watching.

So, here’s to Dricus Du Plessis, who not only defended his title but also won the internet with his wit and charm. As for Drake, maybe next time, he’ll think twice before placing another bet. Or maybe, just maybe, he’ll continue to give us all something to laugh about.

South Africans have united online to defend their country against UFC fighter Sean Strickland’s critical comments, showcasing their resilience and community spirit.

Global (17 August 2024) – When the chips are down, South Africans have an extraordinary way of coming together. We might bicker among ourselves, but the moment someone from outside throws shade our way, the entire nation stands united. And this time, UFC fighter Sean Strickland is learning that lesson the hard way.

Sean Strickland is no stranger to controversy. Known for his brash persona and unfiltered opinions, he’s made headlines inside and outside the Octagon. However, his recent comments on X (formerly Twitter) about South Africa have struck a nerve with Mzansi, sparking a wave of responses that he likely didn’t see coming.

In a tweet that quickly went viral, Strickland posted:

“UFC if Dricus, wins you might have to go to SA. Yall do you really want me going to a corrupt country with deep seated racism and poverty that is usually on the brink of a civil war?!? ‘Here’s the thing about South Africa’ lol”

“That country is so fucked.. I fought there when I was a kid.. poverty, racism, violence. It’s actually kinda sad especially for the children:/ I went to an orphanage and man…… they don’t even try to be decent there.”

With nearly a million views, Strickland’s post spread like wildfire, but instead of rallying support, it was met with a wave of powerful replies from South Africans who weren’t about to let their country be dragged through the mud.

One user shot back, “We may have a very interesting South Africa, but if you diss one of us, you diss 60 million of us. Papa wag vir jou 🤣🤣🤣,” perfectly capturing the unity and humor that define South African resilience.

Another reminded Strickland that “South Africa has more freedom of speech than the USA, no mail-in votes and results are counted in 72 hours. The ZAR is appreciating over the USD. You live in the new 3rd World, Sean. Everything is fake in the USA.”

And then there was this zinger: “You realize Dricus is only the 3rd best fighter in Boksburg- I dare you to come over here and say that to our faces 🇿🇦

Strickland’s comments about the country’s history also didn’t go unnoticed. One response perfectly encapsulated the journey of transformation South Africa has undergone: “When u were a kid, maybe it was still apartheid. We have ‘GNU’ now. It’s a Vibe. Pull in boetie 👋🏽👏🏽.”

South Africans didn’t just defend their country; they also turned the mirror back on Strickland, with one user saying, “Poverty racism and violence…sounds like the USA 🇺🇸 pal.”

But perhaps the most poignant response came from a user who pointed out the hope that sports bring to the nation: “There is always hope, Sean. Look at how sport brings South Africans together. Check the videos after the rugby world cup victory last year. What Dricus is doing is to build on that, and if he wins or loses, all South Africans will welcome him as a hero.”

As Dricus du Plessis prepares to take on Israel Adesanya in the early hours of Sunday morning (South Africa time), the nation stands firmly behind him. Yes, South Africa faces challenges – high crime rates, poverty and corruption – but those challenges do not define the spirit of the nation. South Africans are resourceful, resilient, and unwavering in their hope for a better future. They rally for each other, and their unity shines through, especially when it comes to defending their homeland.

So, dear Sean Strickland, you might want to think twice before talking kak about South Africa online. This country may have its issues, but it’s also full of heart, courage, and a community spirit that’s unbreakable. And when it comes to standing up for their people, South Africans will always show up.

There’s a beloved hadeda remix back on the scene, and South Africans are grooving and giggling simultaneously!

South Africa (12 August 2024) — Ah yes, the sound of a hadeda. It’s the sound that kickstarts many South African days; it startlingly welcomes us back home after a trip aboard and even warns us of trouble (or at the very least, neighbours) nearby. The hadeda’s signature cry is a sound that South Africans know, as well as the voices of our family members—so much so that the bird might as well move in or take on national bird status at this point.

Its call might not be music to our ears most of the time, but it is one of the most recognisable sounds of our country and a reminder of home. So, is it really any surprise that the beloved Hadeda remix is back on the scene?

The hadeda remix or ‘Hadeda Song’ has given South Africans all the reasons to groove and giggle, often at the same time. It’s a prime example of South African humour—few other nations would take a sound so nationally frustrating and turn it into a hit for the sake of comedy, just as we’ve done with other significant South African moments like the ‘When People Zol’ song. But when you’re South African and know how to sling a tune or two, it’s something of a must to turn frustrations into something entertaining!

Taking on an amapiano beat, the hadeda remix (initially shared by Thozi Music in 2021) has toes tapping and comment sections filling up with love for South Africa and South African humour. In this way, the song has become somewhat synonymous with South Africa’s unique approach to resilience—turning struggle into something smile-worthy.

@winonaaa.ca SA is special 🤣 id get bored if i left #winonaaaca ♬ original sound – BIG LOVE ❤

@aqeelahsulaiman_ Our National bird has a remix🤣🤣😭😭 #fyp #foryou #aqeelahsulaiman #southafricatiktok🇿🇦 ♬ original sound – BIG LOVE ❤

The hadeda may not exactly be the songbird we chose, but it’s the bird that chose us. And, South Africa simply wouldn’t be South Africa without a hadeda in the family photo album.

UK celebrity Tom Read Wilson’s charming Instagram video introducing the South African phrase “Don’t tune me grief, tune me Howzit” has delighted fans, showcasing the unifying power of cultural exchange and humour.

Global (03 August 2024) – South African culture bursts with rich traditions, colourful expressions, and a spirit of unity that transcends borders. This unique ability to connect people, even from afar, is beautifully exemplified by the ever-charming Tom Read Wilson, a beloved UK celebrity known for his wit, warmth, and wisdom.

Wilson, an actor and television presenter, has captured the hearts of many with his engaging personality and eloquent diction. Known for his regular “Phrase of the Day” series on Instagram, the talented actor has a knack for infusing his followers’ days with a touch of linguistic charm. In his recent post, Wilson donned pearls and attempted a South African accent to introduce the phrase, “Don’t tune me grief, tune me Howzit.”

With his characteristic elegance and humour, he explained that this phrase could be used “when your neighbour is engaging in verbal intercourse with you, to get them to be more glass half full.”

His playful delivery and sincere effort to capture the essence of South African slang quickly resonated with his audience.

The response on social media was overwhelmingly positive, filled with laughter, appreciation, and a sense of shared joy. One follower commented, “That accent was SPOT ON. Lekker!” Another enthused, “Oh Tom. Honorary South African for sure, or should I say Safrican, you aced the accent, but love you as you are, despite doing great as my Bru, so Howzit from South Africa.” The lightheartedness and genuine appreciation for Tom’s effort shone through the comments, with many expressing their intent to adopt the phrase into their own vernacular. “I absolutely love this. Will use,” one fan declared.

South Africa’s Speedsoft team made a remarkable debut at their first global tournament in the Netherlands, finishing 10th and celebrating with pride and flair.

Netherlands (22 July 2024) – South Africa, a nation of champions, has once again shown the world what we are made of! This time, it was not on the rugby field or cricket pitch but at the exhilarating and fast-paced Netherlands Speedsoft Tournament.

The South African team, in their first-ever global Speedsoft competition, made a splash by placing 10th at the “NSL Nations Cup” awards.

For those unfamiliar, Speedsoft is a thrilling, high-adrenaline sport that combines elements of paintball and airsoft with the strategic depth of tactical games. Teams face off in fast-paced matches where speed, precision, and teamwork are crucial. Players must navigate through obstacles and take down their opponents with skill and strategy, making for an intense and exciting competition.

Despite being up against 10 other seasoned teams from around the world, the South African squad held their own, impressing everyone with their performance. This was an incredible feat, especially considering the team lacked access to some of the top-notch equipment and specialises fields their competitors had.

The tournament concluded with an unforgettable moment that perfectly captured the team’s spirit and camaraderie. During the final interview, one of the South African players, brimming with pride and joy, appeared on screen clad in nothing but his South African flag swim briefs. This playful nod to rugby star Faf De Klerk, known for his iconic post-match celebrations, brought smiles and laughter all around.

As the team heads back home, they carry with them not just the pride of having represented their nation but the dreams of many aspiring Speedsoft players back in South Africa. They have shown that with heart and dedication, anything is possible, and this is just the beginning.

Here’s to the South African Speedsoft team – may they continue to shine brightly and bring more joy and pride to their nation.

“A.N.G.I.E.” is a sketch by comedians Bouwer Bosch and Themba Robin, satirically recruiting South Africans to a new defence force while humorously addressing educational and societal issues.

South Africa (08 July 2024) – South Africans have a unique gift for finding humour even in the most challenging situations. It’s a coping mechanism deeply rooted in the country’s culture, helping people navigate through both the highs and lows of life.

This resilient spirit of laughter has once again come to the fore, this time in the form of a side-splitting sketch that is winning hearts and sparking laughter nationwide.

Angie Motshekga, the long-serving Minister of Basic Education, has often been in the spotlight for the controversial 30% pass mark rate, a policy that has become synonymous with her name. Known for her tenure in the education sector, she has recently been moved to the role of Minister of Defense and Military Veterans in the GNU cabinet. This unexpected shift has left many scratching their heads and ignited a flurry of reactions on social media, with some finding the move particularly bizarre.

Enter Bouwer Bosch and Themba Robin, two of South Africa’s most beloved comedians. Bosch, a talented musician and actor, and Robin, a comedian and actor known for his sharp wit, have teamed up to create a hilarious new sketch titled “A.N.G.I.E.”

This satirical “ad” brilliantly parodies the recruitment of South Africans into a new defence force, turning the peculiar cabinet reshuffle into comedic gold.

In “A.N.G.I.E.,” Bosch and Robin don military attire and launch into a series of absurd recruitment pitches. The sketch pokes fun at various aspects of the current state of affairs. They humorously declare that the new defence force won’t use textbooks because “there is no time to read in a war.” This clever jab references the ongoing challenges in the education sector. They discuss how the defence force will “win a war by denying VISAs,” a witty nod to bureaucratic red tape. Their self-deprecating humour shines through as we can clearly see that they can’t really count either while doing pull-ups, drawing laughs from viewers familiar with the struggles in education standards.

The sketch “A.N.G.I.E.” has just been uploaded but has already started garnering views and social media has already started commenting.

“ha ha ha”

“You can’t do that anymore, only me” – I cried with laughter when I heard that.”

“AG PLEAZE MAN !!!! When are you guys going to start your own TV program!!!! It will be a 100% success hit!”
