The 2025 Australian Firefighters Calendar is here, and it’s more than just sizzling photos – it’s a powerful force for change, pairing Australia’s bravest heroes with adorable animals to raise millions for life-saving causes across the globe.

Australia (21 October 2023) – The Australian Firefighters Calendar is back for 2025, and it’s bringing the heat once again! This year’s edition promises to be bigger, better, and cuter than ever, with a unique theme that pairs the country’s bravest heroes with some of the most adorable animals you’ve ever seen. From playful puppies to cuddly koalas, these firefighters are showing their softer side while supporting fantastic causes. It’s not just a calendar – it’s a celebration of courage, compassion, and community spirit.

For years, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has captured hearts across the world, and many of our Good Things Guy readers eagerly wait for the announcement of its release. Though we don’t get the calendars physically in South Africa, our annual article is the next best thing!

Since its launch in 1993, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has raised over $3.5 million for charities across Australia and beyond. And 2025 is no different – the calendar will continue supporting vital causes, from wildlife rescues to children fighting cancer. This year, the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital is one of the proud recipients of the calendar’s charity donations, helping rescue and rehabilitate injured wildlife.

As Dr Bree Talbot, Head Wildlife Veterinary Surgeon at the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital, beautifully puts it: “This generous support allows us to continue saving Australian wildlife and making a lasting difference.”

But it’s not just about the pictures – these firefighters have become global conservation ambassadors, using their fame to raise awareness for causes like the protection of Australian wildlife. The 2025 calendar editions feature over 25 firefighters from aviation, military, and urban fire services. Each month reveals heart-warming photos of these heroes with animals like koalas, kittens, and even horses.

There are five different editions this year, so there’s a calendar for every animal lover out there!

With the 2025 Australian Firefighters Calendar, we get a feel-good mix of bravery, kindness, and a whole lot of cuteness. What more could you ask for? Grab a cup of tea, enjoy the pictures, and let’s celebrate these everyday heroes who are making the world a better place, one adorable moment at a time!

South African actress Marié Botha has a role in the second biggest show in the world right now, ‘The Penguin’ starring Colin Farrell! Not only this, but her episode has achieved the pinnacle of IMDb ratings with a 9.6/10 score:

Global (15 October 2024) — Fans of Batman’s world and all its various spin-offs are likely already very familiar with the latest rollout from Gotham, ‘The Penguin’ starring a hardly recognisable Colin Farrell. In fact, even if you aren’t necessarily a fan of the notorious fictional city’s stories but simply can’t resist an intriguing show with thick plot lines, you might’ve picked up on the fact that the series is revealing itself to be quite the hit. According to IMDb, it’s the second-biggest show in the world right now!

All of this is hardly bad for the mood for South African actress and self-proclaimed ‘boeremeise’, Marié Botha who nabbed the role of villain Magpie in the show that’s already made the 100 top-rated series of all time list!

As a matter of fact, the episode Marié is in (episode 4) has been hailed as ‘the best episode of The Penguin yet,’ per Esquire. By IMDb standards, the episode has also reached the gold standard, thanks to a rating of 9.6/10.

It’s a big deal in the world of dreams for Pretoria-born Marié, who certainly deserves her flowers.

Born in Pretoria, Marié left home at 18 and headed off to the Big Apple to study at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. Following her BFA degree (which she earned with honours) Marie enrolled in the masters programme at Yale’s school of Drama—a position only 17 other students achieved despite thousands of applicants.

Equipped with an MFA—the jet fuel of her acting dreams—Marié began working as an actress in New York. With countless auditions, indie films, commercial voice-overs and Off-Broadway productions under her belt, Marié finally got her big break after 14 long years.

“I play Magpie, a villain with a split personality and a penchant for shiny things,” shares Marie. “When we see flashbacks of Sofia Falcone in Arkham Asylum, we meet Magpie. She befriends Sofia, but eventually paranoia takes over and Sofia starts to see Magpie as a threat and a spy. This is the first time we see Sofia truly pushed to the edge and the outcome is dire.”

Marié explains that the role was complex but a gift:

“Playing Magpie was like walking a tightrope. In one way, she is this beautiful, dreamy, childlike creature, and on the other side of her sits darkness, trauma and vengeance. It’s a gift to get to play characters that call on me to transform and put myself in parts of a psyche very unlike my own—Magpie is like that.

“She is troubled, haunted by childhood trauma, yet still trying to maintain positivity and look for beauty in her life. It’s sort of sweet and deeply sad. She is very dear to me.”

Marié refers to the callback process as being the ‘most intense’ of her life.

“I was visiting my family in South Africa at the time and had just extended my trip when I got the callback. It was to be on Zoom with the director of episode 4, Helen Shaver. I logged on at midnight, 6pm New York time, and the most intense callback of my life ensued. We worked for ages on the first Magpie scene, doing it this way and that, almost to a point where I thought, “Am I messing this up? I don’t know which way is up anymore.” Right after the audition I was certain that was the end of the road on this one. But the next day I got a call from my agent that I had booked the job and needed to be on a plane back to New York the next morning for a hair and makeup test!”

For the Batman fan, it was a dream role and one of many complex characters she hopes to play.

“For as long as I can remember, I’ve been attracted to playing villains. And for as long as I can remember, I have been a Harry Potter fan,” says Marié of her ‘dream role’.

She adds that she’d love to play Bellatrix Lestrange but also doesn’t feel ready to say goodbye to Magpie.

“It excites me that Matt Reeves is cooking up a lot more in the DC Universe, and I do feel that this incredible character has a lot more story to offer. Fingers crossed!”

As for her South African roots, Marié shares that despite the length of her life in New York and identifying as a New Yorker in her soul, she will always be a South African at heart.

“It’s impossible to let go of the Afrikaans ‘boeremeisie’ in me, and I would never want to. The moment I step off the plane in Cape Town and smell the sea air, hear the melting pot of languages, step through immigration like a local and see my parents waiting to take me to Hermanus, I know I’m home, always.”

You can catch The Penguin on Showmax and M-Net with new episodes every Monday! You can catch the trailer below:

It’s official: James Blunt fans have decided on his new name, but they still need to make his album ‘Back to Bedlam’ reach number one on the charts for him to actually change his legal name.

Global (14 October 2024) – If you missed it, James Blunt set a challenge for his fans to get his album ‘Back to Bedlam’, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this month, to the top of the charts. As a reward for his efforts, he legally changed his name to whatever the masses voted for.

The album, which has fan favourites like ‘You’re Beautiful’, ‘Goodbye My Lover’ and ‘High’, has been reproduced in honour of the anniversary, and the goal is to get it to number one by the end of October.

Naturally, it can be found on all major streaming services, so if you are keen to get in on the fun – start listening right this moment, and very soon, James won’t be James anymore!

It really is clever marketing! So then… What is the new name?

Well, the votes are in, and the name everyone has chosen is “Blunty McBluntface”.

The people have spoken! While we agree that the imagination for this one was slightly lacking (we are still team James Beige), it’s so wholesome seeing James engage with his fans in such a funny manner. The world needs more public figures who are not scared to have a bit of fun on social media.

As more South Africans embrace retirement, stories like those of Ruda Landman show that this phase of life is not about slowing down—it’s about growth, purpose, and giving back.

Johannesburg, South Africa (11 October 2024) – Retirement is often seen as a time to slow down, but many South Africans are proving that this chapter of life can be filled with purpose, growth, and a drive to make a difference.

One of those individuals is Ruda Landman, whose story is both inspiring and full of positivity for others entering this phase. When people share their personal journeys after stepping away from their careers, it offers hope and encouragement to others, showcasing that life beyond work can be just as fulfilling, if not more.

Ruda Landman is a name that rings familiar to most South Africans, thanks to her long-standing role as a journalist and presenter on Carte Blanche, one of the country’s most-watched investigative television shows. For many years, Ruda was the face of hard-hitting stories and in-depth interviews, earning her respect and recognition nationwide. But while her time in front of the camera may have ended, Ruda has embraced life after Carte Blanche with the same energy and determination that made her a household name.

Recently, Ruda was a guest on The Rocktirement Podcast series, created by Circle Senior Living, where she shared her thoughts on ageing, personal growth, and giving back to the community. Her appearance on the podcast is a perfect reminder that retirement doesn’t have to mean retreating from life—it’s an opportunity to find new ways to contribute and enjoy the world.

The Rocktirement Podcast is a fantastic initiative that highlights inspiring seniors, encouraging listeners to rethink outdated notions about ageing and retirement. In a country where many people face uncertainty about their later years, hearing stories like Ruda’s can help shift perspectives and create a sense of optimism.

As a key part of the conversation, Ruda reflected on her iconic career and her well-honed skill of “listening with my skin.”

This ability to deeply connect with others served her well during her time on Carte Blanche and continues to guide her now. She may no longer be in the limelight, but her intuition and commitment to living fully remain as strong as ever.

“Don’t put me in a box just because I’m older,” Ruda said during the interview. “I’m still the same person I always was.”

Ruda’s post-Carte Blanche journey has not been without its challenges. Like many, she faced moments of doubt and self-reflection.

“Who am I really if I’m not that person anymore?” she pondered during the podcast.

But instead of slowing down, she’s taken this time to rediscover herself and explore new avenues for personal fulfilment.

One of those avenues is her involvement with the GRAD initiative, which supports first-generation university students in South Africa. These students, who often can’t turn to family for academic advice, find guidance through GRAD. Ruda, who is deeply passionate about education, finds immense joy in helping these young individuals navigate the complex world of higher education.

“It’s a privilege to give back,” she says, demonstrating that her commitment to making a difference didn’t end with her television career.

Ruda also remains physically active, playfully sharing that she works out with a TheraBand and has abs that “a 17-year-old would be proud of.” Her focus on staying mentally and physically sharp while also enjoying life’s pleasures—like a good glass of wine—paints a picture of balance and well-being that many can aspire to.

Perhaps one of the most touching aspects of Ruda’s current life is the close bond she shares with her son, Johannes. She describes him not just as her child but also as a friend and trusted confidant. This deep connection reflects her ongoing belief in the importance of relationships and how they continue to grow and evolve, no matter what stage of life you’re in.

Facilitated by Gidon Novick, a visionary in both the hospitality and aviation sectors, this podcast series serves as a platform to celebrate individuals who continue to live vibrant, purposeful lives even in their later years.

Novick explains, “It has already been such a privilege to not only meet but really delve into the minds of these South African icons… Life doesn’t stop when you reach your later years—it is there to be lived to the fullest.”

Through the podcast, Circle Senior Living offers a new narrative—one that challenges the stereotypes around ageing and empowers seniors to pursue their passions, stay active, and give back to their communities. This is exactly what South Africa needs: uplifting stories of people like Ruda Landman, who show us that life is meant to be lived fully at any age.

So, for those thinking that retirement means fading into the background, think again. As Ruda Landman reminds us, “Age is just a number,” and life is an endless journey of discovery, growth, and giving back.

Sade Giliberti has officially tied the knot! The seasoned presenter who captivated audiences on the kids show YOTV, recently married her longtime partner Chané in a beautiful and intimate ceremony.

Quarteira, Portugal (10 October 2024) – Many of us will remember her as the cool and charismatic YOTV presenter who had us glued to our screens as kids immediately after getting back home from school.

Well, the years have gone by, and our favourite child star, Sade Giliberti, is all grown up and, more recently, tied the knot to the love of her life!

To get to experience a healthy love that makes you feel secure and adored is something to be cherished in this life. Sade has to seal it with a ring and the vow “I do” as she embarks on the beautiful journey of marriage with her partner, Chané.

Reflecting on her beautiful new chapter online, Sade said she still couldn’t believe how magical their wedding was.

Sade and Chané wore matching white and black blazers on their special day and were supported by loved ones who did not hold back from celebrating them. There’s no doubt that our beloved Sade’s heart is content.

We poured all our love into the personal touches and cherished moments with everyone. We wore matching blazers, because why not!

“Thank you to each and every person for making it out here and for making our micro-celebration so wonderful. The villa was flowing with love, joy, and togetherness. Honestly, a 12/10! Can we do it all over again?!” Sade gushed!

James Blunt has started a challenge for the world and in return, he will legally change his name – the funny musician has been making us all laugh out loud with his antics surrounding this challenge.

Global (09 October 2024)James Blunt has a brilliantly dry sense of humour and while he is incredibly talented in the music department, he also has wit and constantly leaves people giggling.

He has started a challenge to get his album ‘Back to Bedlam’ back on top of the charts and if it hits #1, he will legally change his name to whatever the most popular suggestion is.

“Wanna ruin my life? If the 20th Anniversary Edition of my album “Back To Bedlam” re-enters the charts at number 1, I will legally change my name – to whatever you guys decide. Comment on this post below with suggestions for my name change, or like someone else’s comment to vote. The comment with the most likes on this post across my social media profiles on 11th October – when the album is released – wins. And then the race to number 1 begins!”

There have been some interesting names suggested, but personally, it’s James Beige for us. That one earned a hearty chuckle. Another goodie was Yerb Eautiful. James even put up a recommendation of his own… “Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Pop Star Four Chord Song Machiney?”

Since sharing the challenge, he has been having fun on social media, sharing his famed dry humour in all sorts of funny ways.

So what do you reckon? Are you in for a “Back to Bedlam” reboot? What name are you loving? Do you think James has anything to worry about?

In a fun twist, James Blunt was recently in South Africa for his tour, and he loved his time in Cape Town!

When the news broke that Chris Brown would be performing in South Africa, the country was thrust into a passionate debate about redemption, accountability and the power of public opinion.

South Africa (09 October 2024) – It’s not often that a name stirs up so much conversation across South Africa but with the announcement of Chris Brown’s upcoming performance, the buzz has been undeniable.

The mere mention of his concert tour has sparked a nationwide debate, with people finding themselves divided on where they stand. Whether you’re a fan of his music or a critic of his past, the conversations surrounding his visit reveal more than just opinions; they’re sparking a necessary dialogue.

Since it was revealed that Chris Brown will be performing in South Africa on the 14th and 15th of December 2024, reactions have been mixed, ranging from excitement to outrage.

Chris Brown is no stranger to controversy. His talent as a singer and performer is undeniable but his past actions have left a significant mark on his career. The 2009 incident involving his then-girlfriend Rihanna, where he was convicted of assault, continues to shadow him. Over the years, there have been additional accusations of aggressive and violent behaviour, including altercations with other celebrities, legal issues, and restraining orders (filed against him). While he has continued to maintain a successful music career, these incidents have affected his public image, with many criticising the lack of accountability or reflection on his behaviour.

Many are concerned that welcoming him to South Africa sends the wrong message, especially in a country that grapples with staggering rates of gender-based violence (GBV).

South Africa’s fight against GBV is ongoing, and for some, giving Chris Brown a platform seems to undermine the work being done to combat violence against women. Critics argue that the country should not support an artist with a history of abuse, fearing that it could trivialise the gravity of GBV in South Africa.

“In a country like South Africa, where gender-based violence is a crisis, we cannot give a platform to someone with a history of abuse. It sends the wrong message and undermines the fight for justice and accountability, especially when he is performing 4 days after 16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence,” a social media user opposing Chris Brown’s performance shared.

Despite the controversy, Chris Brown’s fanbase remains loyal. Many of his supporters believe that he has paid for his mistakes and deserves a second chance. His concert in South Africa also sold out in one day. Chris Brown has publicly apologised for his actions and has worked to move forward, which resonates with fans who admire his growth and talent. For some, his personal life and his professional achievements should be viewed separately.

One supporter on social media shared, “People make mistakes, and Chris has owned up to his. He’s been on a path of redemption, and his music continues to inspire millions. Everyone deserves a chance to move on from their past.”

This perspective highlights the idea that people can change and that one’s mistakes, no matter how severe, should not define them forever. Many fans are eager to attend his concerts and celebrate his music without focusing on his past.

The Three Sides to the Story

When it comes to the debate around Chris Brown’s performances in South Africa, there are three main sides to the conversation:

  • Those in full support of Chris Brown and his concerts. They see him as a talented artist who has learned from his mistakes and deserves the chance to perform for his fans in South Africa.
  • Those opposed to his performances in South Africa due to his history of abuse. They feel strongly that giving him a platform undermines the fight against GBV and sends the wrong message about accountability.
  • Those who remain indifferent or are not engaging in the conversation. For this group, the concert is simply another entertainment event, and they do not feel invested in the broader debate.

Social media platforms have been buzzing with discussions surrounding Chris Brown’s upcoming concerts. Two petitions have emerged on Change.org, each representing different sides of the debate. One petition, titled “Stop Chris Brown from Performing in South Africa – No Stage for Abusers,” argues that South Africa should not host an artist with a history of domestic violence and has garnered over 16,000 signatures. The counter-petition, “Support Chris Brown’s Concerts in South Africa,” advocates for allowing his shows to go on, emphasising his talent and the belief in second chances and has garnered over 7,000 signatures.

While the opinions on Chris Brown’s concert are clearly divided, what stands out is the value of healthy debate. Discussions on severe issues like GBV, accountability and redemption are important for any society. The fact that so many people are actively participating in this conversation is a good thing. Debate fosters understanding, encourages reflection and can lead to positive change.

No matter what happens in December, the real victory here is the space this conversation has created for important issues to be addressed.

That is a start. And an incredibly important one.

Joburg’s gem of an art space—Scapegoat Gallery— recently got an A-list visit from supermodel and actress Cara Delevigne and famed photographer David Yarrow!

Johannesburg, South Africa (30 September 2024) — South African premiere international pop art gallery, Scapegoat Gallery, recently got an A-list visit from supermodel and actress Cara Delevigne and famed photographer David Yarrow in what was a fabulous occasion celebrating visual drama, pop culture and the culmination of the two in Johannesburg.

The art space, based in Hyde Park Corner, got to enjoy the honour of hosting David in an event dubbed ‘One Night Only’ (an indicator of how quick his visit was).

Cara Delevigne and David Yarrow with Lizelle.

The gallery was delighted that David then hosted the equally famous Cara in the gallery that’s given pop culture a decorated home in the City of Gold. The two big names visited to stage and photograph astounding visual dramas in a desert setting, with David’s latest and previous works featuring Cara as a character in historical settings presented.

“For one night only they took time out of their busy schedule to meet our gallery friends and collectors, to talk about David’s love of nature, and the way that he is able to picture human experience in the context of the rugged and dramatic world around us,” Scapegoat’s Lizelle Neofytou tells Good Things Guy.

“[Cara] has appeared in his large-scale photographs playing amazing personalities like Bonnie Parker from the movie Bonnie and Clyde, to Oliver Twist, to Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders. David Yarrow’s renowned photographs imagine extraordinary women in equally-extraordinary popular culture situations.

“We have works by Yarrow that imagine Cindy Crawford in situations from Alfred Hitchcock’s movie North by Northwest of 1959. This dovetails perfectly with our mission as an unparalleled pop art gallery,” Lizelle adds.

The gallery has thanked David and Cara for their time, adding that it gives them great pleasure to bring together artists and art lovers to celebrate what they believe to be the pinnacle of artistic achievement!

Doja Cat dazzled the crowd at the Global Citizen Festival, not just with her South African-themed dress but with a powerful call to action—urging the world to unite in the fight for change, love, and hope for those in need.

New York, USA (29 September 2024) – On Saturday, September 28, the Global Citizen Festival returned to New York City’s Central Park, bringing together 60,000 passionate changemakers, artists, and advocates for an unforgettable day of music and action.

Among the many incredible moments of the day, Doja Cat’s appearance in a striking South African-themed dress stole the show, not just for its beauty but for the powerful message that came with it.

The Global Citizen Festival, hosted by the world’s leading advocacy organisation dedicated to ending extreme poverty, has always been a remarkable fusion of music, activism, and global leadership. This year was no different. The festival coincided with the conclusion of the United Nations General Assembly and Climate Week NYC, marking the perfect moment for young people, world leaders, and artists to come together for meaningful change.

As always, the event was free to attend, with tickets earned through actions on the Global Citizen app, allowing attendees to support key causes in the fight to end poverty and defend the planet. Over the past year, Global Citizens took over 3.4 million actions. With the themes of defeating poverty, defending the planet, and demanding equity, this year’s festival spotlighted some of the world’s most pressing issues—and the inspiring people dedicated to solving them.

The festival’s lineup included beloved actors, musicians, and presenters, with Global Citizen Ambassador Hugh Jackman leading the charge as host. Alongside him, appearances by environmental activist Dr Jane Goodall and Coldplay’s Chris Martin added to the star-studded event, as they encouraged the crowd to continue pushing for solutions to today’s challenges.

But it was Doja Cat who truly captured the audience’s attention. Dressed in a stunning South African-themed dress, she delivered a heartfelt message of unity and action from the stage.

“Together, we have the power to bring change, love, light, and hope to those who need it most,” Doja Cat declared, her words resonating with the crowd as much as her vibrant outfit did.

In her speech, Doja Cat revealed her ongoing partnership with Global Citizen, aimed at supporting individuals in conflict and crisis zones. She urged the audience to continue advocating for those who are vulnerable, reminding them of the power they hold to make a real difference in the lives of others.

“Please keep using your voice for those fleeing violence,” she pleaded. Her call for ongoing activism emphasised the importance of not just one-time actions but sustained efforts to bring about lasting change.

As she wrapped up her speech, Doja Cat left the crowd with a message of hope and empowerment: “Let’s put our time where it matters most: life.”

Her words, spoken with sincerity and passion, encapsulated the very spirit of the Global Citizen Festival—showing that, together, we can overcome even the most daunting challenges.

The world may face many challenges, but this year’s Global Citizen Festival proved that when artists, advocates, and everyday citizens unite, real change is not only possible but inevitable. And, thanks to voices like Doja Cat’s, we are reminded that no matter who we are or where we come from, we can all play a role in making the world a better place.

Damian de Allende spent time with children this week before they had craniofacial surgeries with the Smile Foundation; he gave every child a chance to shine.

Tygerberg, South Africa (20 September 2024) – The Smile Foundation hosted a theatre slate at Tygerberg Hospital on the 12th of September and Damian de Allende was there to shares some encouragement with the children receiving complex craniofacial procedures.

The ongoing initiative happens twice a month, giving children a chance at a better quality of life. This slate saw three children undergo surgeries thanks to a sponsor from Daikin.

In a heartwarming show of support, Damian de Allende, the renowned Springbok rugby star, will visit the hospital to spend time with the young patients, an experience they and their families will treasure forever.

Among the children receiving surgery is 5-year-old Ashad from Bishop Lavis. Born with a type of flat-head syndrome (known as ‘plagiocephaly’), Ashad is one of many children benefitting from the specialised care offered at Tygerberg Hospital. His surgery coincided with Craniofacial Acceptance Month, a reminder of the importance of raising awareness and providing life-changing interventions for children with craniofacial conditions.

“We are incredibly proud to have the support of partners like and the inspirational presence of Damian de Allende.

Together, we are making a meaningful difference in the lives of children and their families.”
