One of South Africa’s favourite words, ‘Beer boep’, has officially been added to the Oxford English Dictionary!

Global (20 September 2024) — The Oxford English Dictionary is enjoying beer-soaked updates to its latest edition just in time for Oktoberfest (AKA, the most important date on any beer lover’s calendar).

Although the word beer has been around for as long as the amber beverage has (appearing in lots of Old English sources), it has been adapted to fill pints of different experiences and descriptions.

Particularly for former British colonies, including New Zealand, Australia, and our own South Africa, beer is quite the celebrity beverage across social and cultural occasions. So, it’s no surprise that the word has transformed into everything from an activity like ‘beer-up’ all the way to the noun, ’beer hound’ (someone who drinks beer a little too enthusiastically, a little too often). A famous South African term has been added to the updated list—‘beer boep’!

The official definition per the Oxford Dictionary describes ‘beer boep’ as a noun that’s often depreciative It’s defined as: A protuberant belly or paunch [especially] on a man, attributed to beer consumption.”

While most South Africans just say boep (or if you’re in my father’s darts club, ‘boepies’), it’s exciting to see one of our country’s favourite words claim a space in the dictionary and potentially travel across the world because ‘beer belly’ simply doesn’t have the same zest.

Other freshly added official beer-related words include ‘beeriness’, having a ‘beer coat’ or ‘beer blanket’ (feeling somewhat immune to the cold thanks to the alcohol) and even ‘beer off’, which, to the disappointment of many, does not describe duel by beer but rather a name for parts of England where alcohol is sold for consumption off the premises.

In celebration of the Springboks’ claiming the Freedom Cup, artivist Natania Botha and creative Kevash Naidoo teamed up to create the Sustainable Springbok Sculpture—an ode to South Africa’s pride and joy and all they encompass:

Johannesburg, South Africa (16 September 2024) — South African artivist Natania Botha recently teamed up with talented 20-year-old creative Kevash Naidoo to create an ode to the Springboks and all they encompass in art form. The result? A breathtaking mosaic sculpture that, just like the Boks, embodies unity—unity that’s made possible by the sum of many differences coming together for one proud purpose.

The Springboks Sculpture comes as a celebration of the Springboks victory in reclaiming the Freedom Cup—a feat South Africans across the world are still relishing in. But, it’s also a striking visual translation of other concepts South Africa sees itself reflected in through our national team.

“The sculpture represents the fusion of art, sport and social inclusion,” says Natania who described the experience of working with Kevash, who has Down syndrome, as a “meaningful collaboration of art and resilience” and a privilege.

“It stands as a visual homage to teamwork, unity, and overcoming challenges—values that Kevash and I embraced wholeheartedly throughout the creative process.”

And, just like South Africa’s love for our team, the sculpture is sustainable.

“What makes this sculpture truly special is that it is a sustainable creation, crafted from a recycled mannequin and sustainably sourced materials, symbolising not only the triumph of the Springboks but also the importance of environmental responsibility,” Natania, who is no stranger to bringing mannequins to life in the most thought-provoking ways, adds.

“Our sustainable approach further highlights the importance of rethinking how we create and consume in a world increasingly focused on preserving resources.”

Natania and Kevash hope their Sustainable Springbok Sculpture will get the chance to travel far and wide across South Africa and inspire more locals to unite as team members of our country.

Currently, you can catch it on exhibition at the Gordon Institute of Business Science.

Crocheters have shown us time and time again the difference their talents can make in the world, from sustainable endeavours to social upliftment. But crochet can also be a positive force in your own world! The pros fill us in on how:

South Africa (12 September 2024) — Deemed for far too long as simply a hobby, the art of crochet can make a lot more than gorgeous creations. But, even if budding crocheters aren’t planning on using those needles for massive endeavours, make no mistake—it’s a powerful skillset that could greatly impact your own world for the better.

With today marking International Crochet Day, masters of the skill at Re.Bag.Re.Use are sharing some lesser-known benefits of joining the crocheters’ clan!

In case you didn’t know, Re.Bag.Re.Use have used crochet skills to make a big difference in the world of sustainability, all while empowering local communities.

Over three years, Regine le Roux’s lockdown-born idea has helped repurpose nearly 100,000 empty bread bags into different items, from handbags to hats. Not only has this greatly helped combat the plastic waste problem we face in South Africa, but it has also served as a social effort that’s invested in local communities and charities. Needless to say, what was born from a love of crochet has certainly made a mark on the world straight from Hout Bay.

Today, the team extends from Hout Bay to Cape Town, Pretoria and Mpumalanga, with 21 women on board.

How Crochet Can Make Your World a Better Place

Stress Relief and Meaning at a Low Cost

A better world certainly sounds a lot like one that’s less stressed and is filled with meaning. With rhythmic and repetitive motions aplenty, crocheting is known to have a calming, almost meditative effect. But beyond this, it also helps people learn how to create something meaningful out of very little.

Re.Bag.Re.Use’s Hlezipi Mnungi shares:

“Crocheting is not only a form of relaxation but also an opportunity to create something meaningful. What I love most about crocheting is that it’s simple, and with Re.Bag.Re.Use, we can make waste look chic and fashionable. It doesn’t cost anything to practice this hobby; all you need is a crochet needle and a pair of scissors. You don’t need much experience to make something out of nothing—all you need is passion, patience, and love for what you do.”

Cognitive Skills Booster

The Re.Bag.Re.Use team share that it’s also a fantastic way to boost cognitive skills, due to the focus and concentration required. They add that some studies suggest mindful activities like this can even help stave off cognitive decline!

Fine Motor Skills Enhancement

Because of the intricate hand movements involved, hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills get sharpened. This can make crocheting a super beneficial activity for those recovering from injuries or those seeking to maintain dexterity.

That Crochet-Approved Sense of Accomplishment

Most humans are driven by the boost dopamine gives us, and few things do that better than completing a project. Especially when you’re using materials like recycled plastic, that boost can often be even bigger in a double whammy, making yourself and the environment proud.

Weaving Social Connections

Whether you’re still learning or are a pro, craft groups and crochet circles are a fantastic way to be a part of a community!

Cheaper Than Therapy

When it comes to managing mental health, many might think of seeing a therapist only to realise the costs are striking. If you’re in a place where you need to do some mental spring-cleaning but aren’t in such a dire pinch you need professional psychological help, jumping aboard the crochet train can be a fantastic feat for the following reasons:

  • Anxiety management
  • Sense of control
  • Productivity
  • Connection to others
  • Relaxation
  • Distraction from distressing thoughts

Edu-Paw’s recent spa day initiative was a resounding success, bringing joy and happiness to both the animals and the children involved.

Durban, South Africa (05 September 2024) – What’s better than providing support and basic care to dogs that have been victims of unfair circumstances such as neglect and cruelty? Mmh, how’s about pampering them and showering them with tons of love?!

That’s exactly what the volunteers of Edu-Paw got up to recently. Volunteers from Edu-Paw hosted a spa day for dogs at SPCA Toti and the pets of their own volunteers.

The event held on Saturday, 31 August, was a wonderful opportunity for local children to learn about the importance of keeping their furry friends clean and healthy.

The children from the local community learned how regular baths with effective shampoo can help protect their dogs from ticks, fleas, and mites.

“It was heartwarming to see them so eager to care for their pets and put their new skills into practice.

“Elihle did an amazing job pampering Max. After a refreshing bath and a cosy towel dry, Max enjoyed some warm sunshine followed by a thorough brushing,” the educational NPO shared.

The great initiative was beneficial for both the animals and the children involved. It brought bright smiles and wagging tails and fostered animal care education.

A seemingly insignificant pen mishap caused Vanessa and Athini—two strangers—to cross paths at a local store. When Vanessa noticed Athini struggling to see, she made the heartwarming decision to buy her new specs in what has become a treasured moment for both of them and all who read the story!

spar hero of the week

Sea Point, South Africa (04 September 2024) — Those of us who weren’t blessed with 20-20 vision (or the kind of vision that doesn’t require extensive squinting for that matter) know the utter dismay of having our specs break.

It’s like going from a world of clarity to the depths of a murky swimming pool. Except you can’t come up for air.

This was the case for shop assistant Athini, whose broken specs had rendered her to rely on her limited vision. But little did she know, a stranger would soon come into the store packing not only a broken pen in need of exchanging, but also a wealth of kindness.

Vanessa Frankal was going through her own moment of distress. A broken bee-themed pen, black ink all over her hands and a birthday card to write. On a mission to get a new pen, Vanessa headed to the store of purchase where she’d cross paths with Athini.

“While [Athini’s] manager was scanning the pen price on her computer, I noticed Athini squinting at her managers’ screen and really struggling to see it right up close. I didn’t want to be rude but gently asked, ‘Do you wear glasses?’ She answered ‘yes’ and then continued to struggle to see the screen.

“I asked her ‘Did you forget to bring them to work?’ And she said, ‘No they broke, I need new ones.’ I insensitively said, ‘oh why don’t you get new ones? You are really struggling to see the screen! She answered, ‘I know, all the customers are commenting. But I can’t afford new ones.’ When I asked how much they cost I was shocked and then figured she wasn’t in any position to afford that,” recounts Vanessa.

Without hesitation, Vanessa decided that she was going to buy Athini new specs!

Together, the two popped over to the nearby shopping centre, where an optometrist stood only an escalator ride away.

There, Athini had her eyes checked out, and to no one’s surprise, she needed new glasses very badly.

Vanessa was hot on the optometrist’s heels, checking in to see whether Athini had gotten her glasses and following up with the optometrist when they were still on their way. Luckily, it wasn’t too long until the message came through that the glasses were ready and waiting!

“We quickly went together and when she got the glasses she burst into the biggest smile and said she loved them. As she put them on, and looked around the store, she came towards me to give me a hug and then she just started sobbing and sobbing in my arms—with relief that she could see!! Then I started crying, then the assistant started crying…and then the optometrist came to give her a big hug,” Vanessa shares.

“It was one of my most special moments that I will treasure always.”

Of what inspired her to act so selflessly, Vanessa says that it was simply “how cruel that someone can’t enjoy the luxury of sight, and has to live with such vulnerability, simply because they can’t afford it.”

“I said to Athini, ‘Isn’t it funny that it was a broken pen that brought me to you!’ She told me her Mom told her, ‘This wasn’t an accident, God sent this person to you.”

Vanessa encourages anyone whose heart has been touched by her story to pay it forward in their own worlds.

“I encourage whoever is reading this to do any random act of kindness (big or small) to someone who is more vulnerable than you. The absolute gift is in the giving.”

Gift Zingora’s dream has become a reality. After two years of diligent saving and community support, he will now be able to own a fully-fledged garden service business!

Bryanston, South Africa (31 August 2024) – Gift Zingora is a fantastic gardener who first came onto our radar in November 2022 – Now we have a heartwarming update about his biggest dream, which is adding smiles to the entire Bryanston community!

Gift takes his job seriously; he has worked in gardens using his standard bicycle, turning it into an essential garden tool kit and transport system. Back in 2022, Grant Zoghby stopped him to chat about what Gift does. Their conversation moved Grant so much that he started a crowdfund to get Gift’s dream business off the ground.

Gift had hoped to become a full-fledged garden service provider who could work in two to three gardens a day. Back in 2022, he only managed one garden a day, as he had to cycle to each client. To make his dream a reality, he needed a bakkie and a team.

Grant and Bridget Nortje had raised funds to help Gift achieve his dreams. They managed to raise enough to buy him essential safety gear, a cellphone and a few extras and the rest was used as savings for a bakkie.

Bridget recently took to the I Love Bryanston group on Facebook to share the heartwarming update that Gift had finally purchased a bakkie to take his business to the next level.

“I’m sure many of you will remember the story of Gift, who Grant Zoghby and I met a few years back. He is a wonderful gardener who works 7 days a week and had made his own makeshift “bakkie” with his bicycle to transport his gardening goods to his work places and back home.” – Bridget Nortje

“The story grew and the reach was further than we could ever have imagined. Many of you contributed to a BackABuddy fund and we managed to do repairs to his bike, supply proper lights, shoes, a helmet and safety equipment as well as buy a cellphone for Gift to communicate with clients.

Gift’s ultimate goal and dream was to one day own a bakkie of his own to do his gardening work and transport his equipment to and from his home to his employers’ homes.”

With the money raised, this goal still seemed very out of reach. We explained to Gift that we would need to keep saving and help him get a drivers license for him to own this vehicle.”

After many years of diligent saving and getting all affairs in order – today a wonderful man’s dream came true!

Dreams do come true, and this is a happy day as we could make someone’s come to life”

Dreams really do come true, and we absolutely love when a story gets such a wholesome update like this one. Congrats on your hard work, Gift!

Karli Fourie is a kid hero and a budding athlete with the warmest heart. After becoming the youngest person to swim the Robben Island to Blouberg Crossing, the 10-year-old tackled the famously freezing swim successfully once again; raising over R50,000 for children in need!

Cape Town, South Africa (27 August 2024)— Karli Fourie has just completed her second Robben Island to Blouberg crossing swim at only 10-years-old—a feat that made her a record holder last year when she became the youngest person to tackle the swim.

However, Karli had always planned to use the famously freezing swim as a means to raise funds for Home From Home—a safe space for foster children that she has been supporting every year through clothes donations on her birthday. In 2023, when she attempted the crossing as a training exercise, she unintentionally passed all the requirements to break the record before she had set up her fundraising campaign, which meant she had only achieved half her dream.

Determined to follow through with her intentions for Home from Home, Karli set her mind on meeting the fierce stretch of sea once again. A girl of her word, she did exactly that and impressively, completed the 7.4km swim in 3 hours and 4 minutes.

If that wasn’t enough, she cartwheeled “straight out of the water” as legend of the crossing Howard Warrington recalls. Her right hand in the water, the multiple world record holder Howard joined Karli on her mission—a swim he has done well over 200 times and often for wonderful causes.

“I couldn’t be prouder of this incredible young lady,” Howard beamed.

Beyond proving that the crossing was no match for her a second time, the young athlete with a heart of gold earned her biggest victory outside of the water with the news that she has surpassed her fundraising goal for Home From Home!

Karli raised R52,410 in total—all of which will make the world of difference to foster children in 16 communities across the Western Cape.

A local community’s outpouring of love and generosity led to a heartwarming bake sale, providing much-needed funds for animals abandoned on the streets of Sea Vista, Eastern Cape.

Eastern Cape, South Africa (27 August 2024) – It’s always so heartwarming when animal lovers come together to help animals who have been victims of cruelty and abandonment. The St Francis Animal Rescue‘s recent bake sale was a resounding success! Delectable cakes and treats tempted taste buds, and generous donors dug deep to support the cause.

St Francis Animal Rescue was able to sell every treat on sale and raised an impressive R15,500.

“We are so thankful to all our loving animal-supporting friends for your generous and delicious donations for this morning’s Bake Sale at the St Francis Brewing Company.

“This sale was so important in terms of topping up reduced funds, and this is a dream come true for all our volunteers and especially for the dogs and cats we care for in Sea Vista. Thank you to each and every one of our wonderful supporters. We love you all,” the animal rescue said.

The funds raised will be used to provide essential care, food, and shelter for dogs, cats, cows, pigs, chickens, and goats that have been left to fend for themselves on the streets of the Sea Vista township.

The St Francis Animal Rescue, run entirely by volunteers, is committed to improving the lives of these animals and ensuring that they receive the love and support they deserve.

While the need is still great, the funds raised from the bake sale will make a significant difference in the lives of innocent animals who find themselves in heartbreaking situations – now if that’s not a good reason to treat yourself to a tasty baked good, I don’t know what is!

A new baby black rhino orphan has fortunately found her way to the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary! A rare and beautiful baby girl, the task has called for seasoned black rhino whisperer, caregiver Lucas to step in and make sure she feels at home.

South Africa (23 August 2024) — Last week, the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary shared the bittersweet news that a new baby rhino orphan had been taken into their care. A member of the critically endangered black rhino family, the sweet and very special little girl was taken into their ICU, where her health would be monitored.

The Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary shared that the 3-month-old girl had been under round-the-clock care since her arrival, but showed hopeful signs of strength, stability and a serious love of milk.

After her desensitising blindfold and earplugs were removed, it was time for the little rhino calf to begin the next phase of her journey at the Sanctuary. But, she needed a little help from a top-tier caregiver to do this—enter caregiver Lucas, the ‘Black Rhino Whisperer’!

As the Sanctuary shares:

“Black rhinos are considerably different in personality, temperament, and behaviour compared to white rhinos. These differences are particularly noticeable in small calves, which means that the care and rehabilitation program for a black rhino is quite different from that of a white rhino.

“This is why we called in our resident black rhino calf expert, Caregiver Lucas!”

Lucas is said to be a seasoned caregiver with a knack for creating bonds with black rhino calves, who tend to be particularly loyal to a single caregiver. Thanks to his special touch, other black rhino calves like Swazi have been able to be re-wilded and released.

“Lucas has a magical way with these little calves, and we are so grateful that he is here to help this new little one on her journey.”

With Lucas on the case, hopes are very high for the new rhino orphan will settle down in no time and have the most gentle path to a hopeful future.
