Dricus Du Plessis’ victory over Israel Adesanya in the UFC Middleweight Championship has united South Africa in pride and celebration.

Perth, Australia (18 August 2024) – South Africans know a thing or two about being champions. From the rugby fields to the cricket pitches, and now to the UFC octagon, the nation has shown time and again that its spirit is unbeatable.

Dricus Du Plessis has written the latest chapter in this legacy of triumph, proudly adding the UFC Middleweight Championship to South Africa’s list of global sporting achievements in 2024.

In a high-stakes fight that kept the world on the edge of their seats, Du Plessis took on the formidable Israel Adesanya, a fighter known for his speed, precision, and power. But on this epic night, it was Du Plessis who emerged victorious, forcing Adesanya to tap out in the fourth round and successfully defending his middleweight title for the first time. The victory was nothing short of spectacular, showcasing Du Plessis’ resilience, strategic prowess, and relentless determination.

The night was made even more special when Du Plessis was escorted to the octagon by Springbok legends Siya Kolisi and Eben Etzebeth. As the South African national anthem filled the arena, the sense of unity and pride was palpable. It wasn’t just about a fight; it was about representing a nation that stands together in moments of glory and challenge alike.

The Fight: A Clash of Titans

The bout between Du Plessis and Adesanya was a true clash of titans. The first round saw both fighters testing each other with methodical exchanges. Although Du Plessis sustained a small cut on his forehead, neither man seemed fazed.

In the second round, the action intensified. Du Plessis managed to take Adesanya to the ground, a pivotal moment that hinted at the shift in momentum. Though Adesanya was able to escape and get back on his feet, Du Plessis’ control on the ground showed his determination to dictate the fight’s pace.

The third round brought new challenges, with Adesanya landing some significant shots to Du Plessis’ body, even managing to deliver a stunning elbow. But Du Plessis responded with powerful combos of his own, refusing to back down.

As the fourth round began, the tension was at its peak. Adesanya continued to push forward, but Du Plessis, with the heart of a champion, turned the tide in a matter of seconds. A powerful left to Adesanya’s head was followed by three punishing rights, leading to a takedown and a perfectly executed rear-naked choke. At 3:38 of the round, Adesanya tapped, and the victory was Du Plessis’.

In the aftermath of this incredible victory, South Africans from all walks of life have come together to celebrate. Social media has exploded with pride and joy, with hashtags trending and messages of support pouring in for Du Plessis. Sport has always been a binding force for South Africa, bringing people together in times of celebration and even in times of hardship. Du Plessis’ victory is not just his alone; it belongs to every South African who believes in the power of perseverance and the possibility of greatness.

Congrats, and thank you, Dricus. Hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie (they don’t know what we know). We are stronger together!
