South Africa has been crowned the country that laughs the most online in the continent thanks to a recent collection of data that affirmed what most of us already know: life shouldn’t be taken so seriously:

South Africa (23 June 2024) — Some will find the glass half empty, others will find it full. South Africans on the other hand, might just find the glass funny.

Being able to crack jokes in most situations and finding humour even in the midst of the most hectic potholes is something unique to South African culture. Some might call it a coping mechanism. Others, a good perspective on not taking life too seriously. But regardless of your take, our ability to “find the funny” wherever we can is something proudly South African, and something that actually ties into our resilience.

But, we’re not just peacocking here. There’s data to prove the pudding, thanks to a recent report that revealed not only are we a nation of jokesters, but we also laugh the most online.

In a slice of research that analyzed 30 million geotagged tweets (tweets that have assigned geographical locations to them), it was discovered that out of our entire continent, South Africa laughs the most.

But wait…you pause. How is laughter tracked online? Thanks to the innovation of emotive expressions that are emojis, laughing emojis are great way to gauge what’s tickled users’ funny bones.

Tracking which countries used laughing emojis helped the data collectors make their own conclusions. And South Africa topped the charts on the continent, beating out Ghana, Tanzania, Egypt and Kenya. In fact, we’re one of the countries that laughs the most online in the world, coming in at second with the Philippines taking first place according to the infographic.

So, what online meme, post or video made you laugh the most recently? Let us know in the comments!
