Cape Town sisters Viveka and Rucita Vassen are in the business of bringing local craftspeople’s works to the world. And after being selected for a fantastic international opportunity, they’re well on their way to sharing local magic far and wide!

Cape Town, South Africa (03 July 2024) — The work of local craftspeople served as a great source of inspiration for Cape Town sisters Viveka and Rucita Vassen who went on to start Ananta Design Studio—one of the few African creative businesses that was selected by Création Africa’.

Having started their business in June of 2022 at Decorex in Cape Town, this next step (one that’ll share their craft with the world) has come as a shooting star moment.

Their design house has secured as place as one of a dozen Création Africa laureate businesses that graduate from mentorship to full incubation via the programme (a five-month journey) facilitated by the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs and coordinated by the Embassy of France as well as the French Institute of South Africa and other partners.

The goal of the initiative is to boost and support creative and cultural entrepreneurship, which is why Viveka and Rucita’s design house represents not only a milestone for their own goals, but also a big dose support for Cape Town crafters and bringing their talents to people far beyond our country.

“We love being able, every day, to work with a creative community to bring pieces that are beautiful, meaningful, and practical into the lives of many,” Rucita shares.

“It’s so exciting that our work, and the work of the talented and dedicated crafting community of Cape Town, is being recognised in this way and is being given an unfettered opportunity to grow,” says Viveka.

She adds that a big goal for their business is to empower and uplift communities through creating jobs for crafters, and bringing these works to the international market.

“Création Africa has been a remarkable experience for us. Learning about the fundamental building blocks of entrepreneurship is useful almost beyond words. We’re off to a brilliant start, and we’re taking hundreds of Cape Town’s crafters with us on this journey. We are telling Africa’s stories. The world is listening.”—Viveka Vassen.
