South African comedian Rob Van Vuuren has teamed up with OneCart.co.za in a humorous campaign, transforming into a smartphone-wielding ex-Hobbit to highlight the convenience and efficiency of the personal shopping service.

South Africa (28 June 2024) – In a country where humour is woven into the fabric of daily life, South Africans have an extraordinary knack for finding laughter in every situation, from the most tragic events to the most hilarious advertising campaigns.

The latest example of this ingenuity is the hilarious new collaboration between renowned award-winning comedian Rob Van Vuuren and the personal shopping service OneCart.co.za, which brings a delightful twist to the beloved “Lord of the Rings” saga.

OneCart.co.za is South Africa’s leading personal shopping service, known for its unique value proposition. By allowing customers to order items from multiple retail partners simultaneously, OneCart ensures that a personal shopper curates and delivers these selections within just 60 minutes. This seamless blend of convenience and efficiency has made it popular among busy South Africans.

Van Vuuren partnered with OneCart to create a viral sensation, portraying an ex-Hobbit struggling to choose his most ‘precious’ items to purchase in a humorous online shopping adventure. This character, wielding a smartphone instead of the One Ring, showcases the ease and enjoyment of using OneCart’s services.

Thalissa Pillay, Head of Growth at OneCart.co.za, explains the campaign’s innovative approach: “OneCart’s unique value proposition allows customers to order items from several retail partners at the same time, have this selection picked by one of its personal shoppers, and then have this curated order delivered within 60 minutes. We wanted to communicate this unique selling proposition in a disruptive way and asked ourselves what character from popular culture would be the most interesting to juxtapose with a mobile shopping experience.”

Reflecting on the project, Van Vuuren shares: “My interest was well and truly piqued when I checked my Twitter account a few weeks ago and was tagged in a conversation about SA performers and ‘who would make a great, local Gollum’. Based on several responses, it turns out it was me.”

This collaboration comes after Van Vuuren’s sold-out performances across South Africa and London, as well as his Gold Standard Bank Ovation Award at the National Arts Festival 2023. His transformation into this quirky character for OneCart is yet another feather in his cap before he heads off to The Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

The campaign has already received glowing reviews on social media, with comments such as “Absolutely brilliant,” “This is weird. I approve of this brilliance,” and “Perfectly cast in my opinion.”
