This year, the campaign kicked off with an irresistibly cute advert introducing a fun new “tool” designed to understand “Baby Language,” and it’s sure to put a smile on every parent’s face.

The Baby of the Year competition has become a much-anticipated event for many parents. It’s more than just a chance to showcase their little ones—it’s an opportunity for their baby to become an Ackermans model and win amazing vouchers!

“Back by popular demand, this competition gives parents the opportunity to celebrate their bundles of joy in true Ackermans style. But here’s the catch: “AI” in this campaign doesn’t stand for “Artificial Intelligence”—it’s “Ackermans Intelligence,” a fun nod to technology with a heavy dose of baby cuteness.

While the AI interpretations are, of course, not real, it’s impossible not to laugh at how accurate some of the “responses” seem to be. You might even find yourself wondering if the babies truly had those thoughts in mind!

“In light of global conversations around the use of AI and creativity, and what it means for us humans, we set out to purposefully tackle this topic through this new content piece. We believe now more than ever we should celebrate connection and joy. Navigating the financial strain of “JanuWORRY” into “FebruWORRY”? Not a chance… we got some good tips to getting through!

 

Johannesburg, South Africa (31 January 2024) – Can you pay my bills? This is not a line from a Destiny Child song but a plea, from many South Africans, especially in Januworry.

After navigating through the financial strain of a long January, often dubbed “Janu-WORRY,” it can feel like a daunting task to manage money effectively for the upcoming February. The weight of holiday expenses, coupled with unexpected bills and commitments, can cast a shadow of uncertainty over our financial well-being.

However, it’s crucial not to let the residual stress from January dictate the trajectory of February.

Instead, we can view it as an opportunity to reassess our financial priorities, set realistic budgets, and explore creative solutions for financial stability.

And Budget Insurance has some tips for those trying to get their finances on track in 2024:

  1. To draw up a budget, start with a list of fixed expenditures and other monthly deductions. Have a careful look at what you are spending your money on and identify where you might be “leaking” cash on non-essentials like takeaways, entertainment and satellite TV, as well as on essentials such as your cellphone, groceries and transport. Once you have pinpointed areas where you could be spending less, start cutting back.
  2. Remember, even the smallest adjustments can make a meaningful difference over the long term. Channel the extra money you have into paying off your debt faster, starting with those with the highest interest rates, first. As your debt repayments start getting smaller, you will have more and more money to allocate to your personal savings and other more worthwhile causes – such as saving for retirement planning, a deposit on a new house or a holiday.
  3. Set a savings goal for yourself and consider saving as a non-negotiable, essential ‘expense’ on your monthly budget. Whether your goal is to put away R250 or R1000 a month, put it in your budget and stick to it.
  4. Get creative when looking for ways to cut back on costs. For instance, you could establish lift-clubs to save money on fuel and encourage your family to switch off lights in unoccupied rooms to save cutback on electricity costs. Shop around for bargains and less expensive brands… and don’t forget to use your loyalty benefits to the max.
  5. Put away your credit cards. Don’t carry them around in your purse or wallet as you might be tempted to spend. Rather, carry a debit card for everyday purchases and save up for the more expensive things you want.
  6. Be honest about your debt obligations and your expenses so that you have a clear and realistic picture of your financial situation. Prioritise those with high interest rates and ensure that you pay the minimum on your credit and store cards.

Even the smallest adjustments can make a meaningful difference over the long term. Channel the extra money you have into paying off your debt faster, starting with those with the highest interest rates, first. As your debt repayments start getting smaller, you will have more and more money to allocate to your personal savings.

Develop a positive attitude towards learning how to save money and how you handle money and hold yourself accountable. It’s not an overnight achievement, so be patient with yourself.

The Springbok squad, under the guidance of coach Jacques Nienaber, has been diligently preparing for the Castle Lager Rugby Championship. Following an intensive two-week training camp in Pretoria, the team is focused and determined to deliver a stellar performance in their opening test against Australia at Loftus Versfeld.

The training sessions have been gruelling, combining rigorous field and gym workouts with crucial team meetings.

Jacques Nienaber expressed his satisfaction with the team’s progress, stating, “Things are coming together nicely. The intensity of our training sessions is good, and it’s pleasing to see how we are progressing.”

The foundation laid in previous camps has provided a solid base upon which they continue to build. With their sights set on the upcoming matches against Australia and New Zealand, the Springboks are leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of success. A strong showing in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship is vital as they approach their Rugby World Cup warm-up matches and the highly anticipated global spectacle itself, in France later this year.

In exciting news, World Rugby has confirmed that Jean Kleyn (lock) is eligible for selection based on the rule of birthright transfer. SA Rugby Director of Rugby Rassie Erasmus expressed his delight, recognising the significant contribution Kleyn’s international experience will make to the team. As South Africa gears up for an important season, every match holds immense value in their preparations for the World Cup. Kleyn’s inclusion adds depth to the lock position and enhances the overall experience within the squad.

With the upcoming fixtures in the Castle Lager Rugby Championship, the Springboks have an opportunity to showcase their prowess against formidable opponents.

They will face Australia at Loftus Versfeld on the 8th of July, followed by a clash with New Zealand at Mount Smart Stadium in Auckland on the 15th of July. The final match of the championship will see them take on Argentina at Emirates Airline Park in Johannesburg on the 29th of July.

As South Africans eagerly await these encounters, there’s an extra dose of excitement surrounding the Springboks’ match against Australia.

The atmosphere at Loftus Versfeld promises to be electric as fans come together to support their beloved team.

Launched over 65 years ago, the world’s longest-running hairdressing competition is celebrating South Africans!

 

Johannesburg, South Africa (06 December 2022) – The hairdressing community are celebrating three South Africans who have taken the top spots in the longest-running hair competition in the world!

Over 200 days. Yes, hairstylists couldn’t work in South Africa for over two hundred days. Do you remember that?

It feels like a lifetime ago, but it was, in fact, just last year that many South Africans were almost brought to their knees by not being able to work. It was an incredibly difficult time.

But L’Oréal Professionnel is helping to not only rebuild the industry but also celebrate the South African talent that keeps us looking so damn good!

The company promoted the 2022 “Style & Colour Trophy”, the longest-running hair competition in the world, and is now celebrating three South Africans who came out tops!

“Launched in 1954, the “Style & Colour Trophy” brought to you by L’Oréal Professionnel Paris celebrates the creativity and skills of hair artistry. The contest brings incredible excitement and energy to the global hairdressing industry, inspiring hairstylists worldwide to strive to push the limits of what is possible not only in the salon but on the world stage!”

Open to 7 million stylists worldwide, this year’s competition saw 22,500 candidates representing 30 countries participate.

The Global Grand Finale of Style & Colour Trophy 2022 was showcased in a special episode of Run Le Hair Show, the international web series by pros for pros and all hair lovers. The episode was entirely dedicated to the legendary contest, expanding on the show’s primary purpose, which is to shine an even brighter spotlight on some of the most talented hairstylists in the world today.

“The global audience – not only among the finalists’ countries- watched the jury comment on all aspects of skills, artistry, and execution of the global finalists. Eventually, we discovered Massimo Tirimacco became SCTrophy Grand Winner 2021. Kevins Kyle Lambert, Canada, wins the SCTrophy second place award and Erica Keelen, USA, becomes the SCTrophy 3rd place award winner.”

And L’Oréal and South Africa are all celebrating our home-grown winners!

South Africa swept the medal board at the 9th SA International Ballet Competition!

 

Western Cape, South Africa (05 August 2022) – The 9th South African International Ballet Competition (SAIBC) came to a spectacular close at the Artscape Opera House on Saturday, the 30th of July 2022. The festive event was a joyous celebration of outstanding ballet and contemporary dance that showcased the 2022 Winners and featured guest appearances by professionals and vocational students from Mzansi Ballet.

Every SAIBC participant also took part in a fun finale that was choreographed by Angela Revie.

Aside from a delighted audience that came out in full support of the competitors, the closing Gala was attended by the international Jury panel that was present in person for the first time in two years. Speakers included Anroux Marais, the honourable Minister of the Western Cape Government Department of Cultural Affairs and Sport, and Councillor Mzwakhe Nqayashe, Safety and Security Portfolio Committee Chairperson for the City of Cape Town. Both the Western Cape Government and the City of Cape Town provide invaluable support for the annual SAIBC.

The week-long SAIBC event kicked off on the 26th of July 2022 as a hybrid event that saw dancers participating onstage and via video from countries such as Mongolia, Brazil, Australia, the USA, Germany, Malaysia, China, Nigeria, Latvia and South Korea. International dancers that competed onstage at Artscape came from Cuba and Russia. The Judges assessed dancers in classical and contemporary genres across four categories, being Novices aged 6 to 8, Scholars aged 9 to 11, Juniors aged 12 to 15 and Seniors aged 16 to 19.

For solo entrants, Cuba scooped the most golds, winning four in total. Carolina Rodrigues, 18, won gold in both her classical and contemporary sections, as did her Cuban competition partner Pedro Dominguez, 18. Both train at the National Ballet School of Cuba. South African Nico Prinsloo, 13, who hails from Johannesburg and trains at the Mzansi Ballet Vocational School, won two golds for both his sections too. Overall, South Africa took home eight medals, including those awarded for group and duet performances. Both Rodrigues and Prinsloo also received additional Special Prizes that recognised exceptional talent, with Prinsloo winning the Geung Soo Kim Award of R10,000 for The Most Promising South African Dancer in the SAIBC 2022, and Rodrigues winning the Special Jury Prize. The third special award – the Blacks in Ballet prize – went to Zeinab Kone, 14, from Johannesburg.

The 2022 panel of judges was made up of the heads of some of the world’s leading ballet schools, academies and training facilities in the world, namely Christoph Böhm (Germany), Guest ballet master and teacher at the Berlin State Ballet; Professor Geung Soo Kim (South Korea), former Artistic Director of the Korean National Ballet and president of the World Dance Alliance; Debbie Turner, CEO of Cape Town City Ballet and the Jury Chair; Roberta Martins (Switzerland), former ballerina and a ballet teacher at the Zürich Dance Academy; Ioshinobu Navarro Sanler (Spain/Cuba), teacher in the Cuban Dance Methodology and expert at Alicia Alonso Institute from the Alicia Alonso Foundation; Artemiy Pyzhov (Russia), First Soloist with the Ballet of Slovak National Theatre and a ballet teacher in Slovakia who trained at the Bolshoi Ballet School, and Ruan Galdino (Brazil / SA), Senior Soloist of Joburg Ballet. The 7th Jury member, Professor Geung Soo Kim from South Korea was unable to travel to South Africa to adjudicate in person.
