A Will is crucial for protecting your loved ones, yet 70% of South Africans pass away without one. On today’s Good Things Guy podcast, Grant Fietze from Capital Legacy shares why securing your family’s future has never been easier.

South Africa (01 October 2024) – We spend so much time planning for the future, whether it’s saving for retirement, organising family holidays, or just ensuring that life runs smoothly. But one of the most important ways we can safeguard our loved ones is often left to chance – creating a Will.

Having a Will in place isn’t just about protecting your assets; it’s about ensuring your family is cared for, their futures are secure, and that your wishes are honoured after you’re gone.

Today, we’re thrilled to talk about the importance of Wills with Grant Fietze from Capital Legacy on the Good Things Guy podcast. Grant joins us to break down why a Will is essential and how Capital Legacy is helping South Africans take this important step to secure their families’ futures.

What is Capital Legacy?

Capital Legacy is a company that’s doing some incredible work in the legal and financial space, helping people draft Wills and navigate the complex world of estate administration. But they’re not just your average service provider – they’re passionate about making Wills accessible and affordable for everyone. Their goal is to ensure that South Africans are empowered to make informed decisions that protect their loved ones when it matters most.

In a country where many feel overwhelmed by the thought of legal jargon and costly processes, Capital Legacy is making it easier for people to take control of their legacies. Their team offers expert guidance in drafting Wills and provides peace of mind that your estate will be handled with care and professionalism.

The Shocking Truth About Wills in South Africa

Here’s a sobering statistic: A recent survey revealed that while most people agree that Wills are incredibly important, a staggering 70% of South Africans pass away without one in place. Yes, you read that right – 70%! That’s hundreds of families every year left in legal limbo, facing financial uncertainty and unnecessary stress during an already difficult time.

But here’s the good news: it doesn’t have to be that way. With companies like Capital Legacy, creating a Will is simpler, faster, and more affordable than ever. And today, Grant is here to share how taking this crucial step could change everything for your family.

A Chat with Grant Fietze from Capital Legacy

On today’s Good Things Guy podcast, we sit down with Grant Fietze, who sheds light on why so many people delay getting their Wills in order and how Capital Legacy is helping to change that narrative. Grant shares stories of families who were able to avoid complications because they took the time to put their affairs in order. It’s a powerful reminder of how a simple piece of paper can make a world of difference.

There’s no better time than now to start thinking about your future – and more importantly, the future of those you care about. Having a Will in place isn’t just a legal obligation; it’s a way of ensuring that your loved ones are looked after, your assets are handled according to your wishes, and your family can avoid unnecessary heartache.

Grant put it perfectly during our chat: “The peace of mind that comes from having a Will in place is invaluable. It’s not just about what happens when you’re gone; it’s about protecting the people you love and ensuring their future is as bright as possible.”

South African Olympian Elvira Wood is championing mental health awareness by helping fellow athletes navigate post-Olympic depression through her work with the South African Olympian Association.

Johannesburg, South Africa (11 September 2024) – The Olympics. It’s a stage where dreams are realised, where athletes push beyond their limits, and where nations come together to celebrate the spirit of sport. But for some, the journey doesn’t end when the flame is extinguished; it marks the beginning of a different, often challenging chapter.

This is the untold story of post-Olympic depression, and today, we are focusing on the inspiring work being done by South African Olympian Elvira Wood to support her fellow athletes through this difficult time.

Elvira is not just an Olympian; she’s a fierce competitor, a dedicated athlete, and a role model to so many. As a talented fencer who represented South Africa on the world’s biggest stage, Elvira knows firsthand the emotional rollercoaster that comes with preparing for and competing in the Olympics. The highs are exhilarating, but the comedown can be unexpectedly hard. When the spotlight dims and the adrenaline fades, athletes can often feel a profound sense of loss and disorientation.

This phenomenon, known as post-Olympic depression, is surprisingly common. Many athletes spend years, if not decades, training for their moment of glory. The anticipation, the pressure, the singular focus on one goal—when it’s over, the emptiness can feel overwhelming. The symptoms vary from person to person, but they often include feelings of sadness, anxiety, and a lack of direction. For some, it can even manifest as a sense of identity crisis. Recognising this struggle, Elvira has dedicated herself to helping other South African sportsmen and women navigate these complex emotions. Partnering with the South African Olympian Association (SAOA), Elvira is working tirelessly to create a support network for athletes who may feel lost after the games are over.

“It’s about reminding them that they are more than just their last performance,” she explains. “They have so much more to offer, and their value isn’t defined by a single competition.”

Elvira’s mission is simple but powerful: to provide hope, guidance, and community to those who may feel like their world has suddenly become smaller. Through conversations and mentoring, she shares her personal experiences and strategies to cope with life after the Olympics. The South African Olympian Association, too, has embraced this cause, offering resources and support groups to help athletes find new passions, develop new goals, and rediscover their purpose beyond their sport.

Recently, Elvira joined the Good Things Guy podcast to discuss her journey and her work with the SAOA.

“The more we talk about post-Olympic depression, the more we normalise it,” she says. “There’s nothing wrong with feeling lost. It’s about finding a new path, a new way to channel all that energy and dedication that made them Olympians in the first place.”

Her message is one of resilience and hope—a reminder that the end of one chapter is simply the beginning of another.

In the words of Elvira Wood: “The greatest victory is not just about winning medals, but finding strength in the moments after. There’s always another adventure, another challenge, another chance to make a difference.”

And with leaders like Elvira, South African athletes are proving that the flame of passion and purpose never truly goes out.

Revolutionising the hiring process of SAICA trainees with AI-powered placements is here… and it’s called Aptihire!

South Africa (13 February 2024) – What started as a casual conversation about how unbelievable it is that lockdown had put universities and the world on pause ended up being the first step in creating UNLOCK – the “Uber” of tutoring – as I called it in my interview with one of the founders, Luke Tollman in 2020.

But that was four years ago, and Luke has been up to something else since then… yes he has started something new, something that is revolutionising the hiring process of SAICA trainees with AI-powered placements.

I call this the “2024 P-Net for young professionals”. Not sure it will stick.

Let’s see what Luke says:

Amid challenges and uncertainties, Good Things Guy is partnering with Liberty for the third year of #DriveHope, a heartwarming initiative born from compassion, touching lives through acts of kindness and unity in South Africa.

Johannesburg, South Africa (26 October 2023) – The origins of #DriveHope trace back to a heartfelt plea shared on Facebook in 2019. Karen Denny, a compassionate soul with a penchant for making a difference, stumbled upon a post that would tug at her heartstrings and spark a movement that is making waves across South Africa.

In the backdrop of her mind, Jeremy Mansfield’s Christmas Wish campaign served as an unintentional source of inspiration. What if, she wondered, we could expand on these wishes and make them an everyday reality?

#DriveHope began as an internal initiative within Liberty, designed for its employees to nominate their colleagues and communities in need of help, offering a small boost to keep them going. The idea was to foster a culture of compassion and care within the organisation. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic escalated, the need to support South Africans became more apparent than ever.

Liberty, as an organisation with a strong commitment to its employees and the communities they serve, sprang into action. The platform was then opened to the public, allowing anyone to nominate individuals or groups in dire straits during the global health crisis. This decision marked a significant turning point in the initiative.

Fast forward three years and #DriveHope has emerged as a symbol of selfless giving and a beacon of light for those who are struggling. The initiative has managed to contribute over R3.4 million in ‘random acts of care’ across the country. It’s a testament to the incredible impact that ordinary individuals can make when they come together with a shared vision of spreading hope and kindness.

Karen Denny, who set the wheels in motion for this remarkable initiative, remains a humble yet powerful force for good. Her commitment to helping those in need and her unwavering determination to bring smiles to faces in challenging times are truly inspirational.

National Wills Month in South Africa, extended from Wills Week, encourages responsible estate planning with Brent Lindeque’s insightful podcast featuring Grant Fietze while highlighting the critical importance of having a will for protecting loved ones, minimizing conflict, and ensuring efficient asset distribution.

Capital Legacy Wills and Estate Specialists

Johannesburg, South Africa (05 September 2023) – In a country as diverse and vibrant as South Africa, one would think that we South Africans have an equal enthusiasm for planning our future and securing our legacies. However, the numbers tell a different story. More than 70% of South Africans do not have a will in place, leaving their loved ones and assets vulnerable to unforeseen circumstances.

But don’t worry, there’s some good news on the horizon.

National Wills Week, a remarkable initiative that seeks to encourage and assist South Africans in drafting their wills, has now evolved into National Wills Month. This exciting development allows for even more individuals to participate in this crucial event, ensuring that the legacy you leave behind is protected and distributed as per your wishes.

To gain deeper insights into this important matter, Brent Lindeque, the man behind the “Good Things Guy” platform, recently sat down with Grant Fietze, the Executive Manager of Marketing at Capital Legacy, a pioneering company in the field of estate planning. Their insightful conversation is a must-listen for anyone who is yet to draft their will or wishes to understand the significance of this process.

Grant shared invaluable information about the evolution of National Wills Week into a month-long event. This expansion means more opportunities for South Africans to engage with experts, seek guidance and ultimately safeguard their family’s future.

So, what are the top five reasons why having a will is absolutely essential?

1. Protecting Your Loved Ones:

A will allows you to specify how your assets should be distributed after your passing. This ensures that your loved ones are taken care of financially and materially. Without a will, the legal process can be lengthy and complex, causing unnecessary stress for your family.

2. Nominating Guardians for Minor Children:

If you have children under the age of 18, a will allows you to designate a guardian who will take care of them in the event of your passing. This decision can be one of the most critical aspects of your will, ensuring that your children are raised by someone you trust.

3. Minimising Conflict:

When there’s no will in place, disputes over inheritance can lead to family rifts and costly legal battles. A clear, legally binding will helps minimize the potential for conflict and ensures that your assets are distributed according to your wishes.

4. Efficient Estate Administration:

Having a will streamlines the process of administering your estate after your passing. This means quicker access to funds for your loved ones, reducing financial strain during an already emotionally challenging time.

5. Tax Planning:

A well-structured will can also help reduce the tax burden on your estate, ensuring that more of your assets go to your beneficiaries and less to the taxman.

In conclusion, National Wills Month is a vital opportunity for South Africans to take control of their legacy, protect their loved ones, and make their wishes known. Let’s ensure that, as South Africans, we not only embrace our vibrant present but also secure a brighter future for our loved ones through responsible estate planning.

National Wills Month is the perfect time to embark on this journey of safeguarding your legacy and leaving a lasting impact on the lives of those you cherish most. For more information, click here.

Amidst danger and chaos, a South African’s unwavering courage shone through as he risked everything – including his life – to save his cherished four-legged companions.

Johannesburg, South Africa (17 August 2023) – In a world where fear and uncertainty seemed to hold sway, a story of unwavering courage has emerged, shedding light on the human and canine spirit’s remarkable resilience. This is the poignant story of how one South African risked everything – including his life – to save his cherished four-legged companions.

Today, in a heart-to-heart conversation that promises to be both inspiring and uplifting, Kobus Olivier joins the Good Things Guy podcast. This meeting of minds underscores the triumph of the human spirit and the incredible bond between a man and his four-legged friends, reminding us all that even in the face of adversity, courage and companionship prevail.

Listen to it here:

Kobus Olivier, a former South African Cricketer and a devoted father to four cherished dogs found himself plunged into a nightmarish reality as the Russian Ukranian conflict loomed large. His remarkable journey, beautifully captured in the poignant documentary “War Dogs and I,” is not only captivating hearts but also highlighting the extraordinary bond between man and our four-legged companions during times of terror.

Imagine the scene: bombs detonating, the air rife with chaos.

Kobus’ plan to find refuge in his apartment’s bathroom seemed reasonable, a haven from the impending storm. But the situation escalated swiftly, and as the deafening explosions echoed around them, the brave pack had no choice but to flee, leaving behind their once-familiar home.

The documentary “War Dogs and I,” earning a stellar 9.6/10 rating on IMDB, transports us to the early stages of the Russia-Ukraine conflict, a time when Kiev stood in the crosshairs of turmoil. Through captivating storytelling, the film centres on Kobus and his four loyal dogs, painting a vivid portrait of their darkest days. Those heart-pounding moments when they sought refuge in the bathroom, surrounded by the cacophony of explosions and the rat-a-tat of machine gun fire, are etched in their collective memory.

Despite the odds, he clung to faith, relying on his quick thinking and unwavering trust in higher powers.

Graeme Codrington popped into the Good Things studio to chat about the new proposed health amendments, why South Africans are so angry… and where we go to from here.

Johannesburg, South Africa (20 April 2022) – What exactly are these proposed new health regulations? Why are South Africans so angry? And where do we go from here? Graeme Codrington joins Good Things Guy to chat about the state of the nation.

Codrington, a South African author, futurist and strategy consultant, has been very vocal about the Corona Virus and what that means for South Africa. Some of his thoughts have been very serious, talking about the elderly, the people with underlying illnesses and the poor. But he has also added a different perspective and ultimately… hope.

Yeah, it’s a controversial conversation but there are three key points that stand out:

  • Get the facts. Know the right information.
  • Keep holding the government accountable. Never stop!!!
  • And most importantly, work together – as a society – to create a better tomorrow!

We got to speak to THE Royal Photographer about capturing Lady Di’s incredible wedding, and what it was like putting the documentary together for Britbox!

Johannesburg, South Africa (07 September 2021) – You know we are all about the good things here, and you should also know that I am all about good TV and doccies. That is why this week, we are bringing you front row seats – actually, a more behind the scenes look at Britbox – the newest streaming service that has landed on South African shores.

Yup, Avid South African TV fans can now binge-watch the best of British programming all in one place as subscription video-on-demand service BritBox has launched locally as of Friday, the 6th of August, with new and exclusive titles such as Line of Duty season six, Professor T and Wedding of the Century, plus thousands of hours of classic content and family favourites.

After taking the United States, UK, Canada and Australia by storm and with over two million global subscriptions, BritBox is bringing local consumers a wide range of top-quality viewing, including the biggest collection of British box sets, courtesy of a joint venture between British television powerhouses BBC and ITV, responsible for some of TV’s most iconic moments.

To chat about this incredible new streaming service, we’re joined on this week’s Good Thing Jacpod by Neale Dennett – the New Markets Launch Director for BritBox International and Kent Gavin – a British photojournalist whose images have featured consistently on newspaper and magazine covers throughout the world.
