The SPAR Group has launched a ‘R1 Billion in Savings’ promotion to ease financial burdens for South African consumers, who are experiencing rising living costs.
South Africa (26 June 2024) – As the cost of living continues to rise, South Africans are feeling the pinch more than ever. With food expenses consuming roughly one-third of their income, many families are struggling to make ends meet.
But there’s a bright spot on the horizon.
In a groundbreaking move, the SPAR Group has launched its ‘R1 Billion in Savings’ promotion, a first in South African retail, offering a lifeline to consumers grappling with financial pressure.
From now until 22 July, SPAR Rewards customers can look forward to significant discounts on a wide array of products. This initiative aims to alleviate the financial burden by providing substantial savings on everyday essentials such as SPAR Macaroni or Spaghetti 500g, SPAR Extra Shelf Life Full Cream or Low Fat Milk 2L, and SPAR IQF Chicken Mixed Portions 4kg, among many others.

The timing couldn’t be better. According to the FinScope Consumer South Africa 2023 report, groceries make up 30.4% of monthly expenses for South African consumers. Moreover, 40% of adults in the country have to rely on credit to buy food. This stark reality emphasizes the urgent need for solutions that help stretch every rand.
“We understand the financial pressures our customers are facing, and we are committed to providing meaningful support through our SPAR Rewards programme. Our R1 Billion in Savings promotion is one of our ways to provide much-needed relief from the rising cost of living by putting more on the table, in the fridge, and in the cupboards,” says Mpudi Maubane, National PR, Communications & Sponsorships Manager at The SPAR Group.
A recent global retail study by Kantar highlights the impact of grocery promotions, showing they can save shoppers up to 20-30% on their grocery bills. For the average South African family spending approximately R3,500 per month on groceries, this could translate into monthly savings of up to R1,050. Over the course of the promotion, families could potentially save R2,100 or more, making a significant difference in their household budgets.
“During the course of the entire promotion, families could potentially save R2,100 or more if they manage their budget effectively, making a significant difference in their household budgets,” continues Maubane. “And that’s our aim. This promotion is a direct response to the escalating issue of food pricing and is designed to ease some of these burdens by making essential goods more affordable. We want to make a tangible difference in the lives of our customers and demonstrate our unwavering support for them and for the broader communities that we serve.”
