Boikanyo – The Dion Herson Foundation is on a mission to empower physically challenged children by providing them with essential mobility aids: specialised wheelchairs, also known as “buggies”.

Gauteng, South Africa (21 October 2024) – Wheelchairs make a world of difference in the lives of physically challenged children.

Sadly, many of those in rural, underserved areas have to go without one for most of their childhood until they are connected with life-changing angels like those of the Boikanyo – The Dion Herson Foundation.

Doing their level best to respond to the high demand for specialised wheelchairs (buggies), the non-governmental organisation has undergone the big task of refurbishing and transforming old, worn-out chairs donated by public hospitals to provide disabled children with essential mobility aids.

“A buggy can provide them with the support they need to sit upright and pain-free. This way they can engage with the world around them.

“Buggies offer more than mobility. They offer dignity, and a chance to be a part of their family and community,” Boikanyo shared.

The dedicated team recently received a generous donation of these chairs from The Paige Project, which they will distribute at their next outreach after giving them a revamp, allowing children the freedom and joy to participate in family activities, attend school, and connect with their peers.

The organisation also extended its thanks to one of its supporters, Ruth Stubbs, who plays a key role in allowing Boikanyo to teach therapists in deep rural areas how to revamp and recycle condemned buggies from state hospitals.

“Our group does it for those terribly contorted and disabled cerebral palsy children who live in rural SA, while she revamps buggies for similarly incapacitated children in Gauteng.”

Their commitment to making a difference is evident in every community outreach and every smile they bring to a child’s face.

The next outreach will be held near Tzaneen, Limpopo, where about 100 children are on the waiting list for buggies.

A man who had been cared for by his mother his entire life was overcome with emotion when he received a wheelchair for the first time.

Vrede, South Africa (17 September 2024) – After 32 long and trying years, a man was finally able to experience a newfound sense of freedom and being able to move around, thanks to a generous donation from Boikanyo the Dion Herson Foundation.

After years of being carried by his mother, the life of a young man at a disability centre in Vrede was made easier when he received a new wheelchair.

His mother had carried him on her back for years until the life-changing donation was made to the family last week, bringing much-needed aid, mobility, peace of mind and an overwhelming joy!

“When we wheeled a brand new wheelchair towards him, his reaction was unforgettable!

“He started laughing, shaking, and clapping his hands in disbelief and joy as it was something he had been denied his whole life,” the organisation shared.

A wheelchair may seem like a small thing, but such priceless moments just go to show how it can have a profound impact on someone’s life. The genuine joy of this young man is enough to move anyone to tears!

Boikanyo DHF is a non-profit organisation working with households in impoverished communities.

The NPO takes specialised wheelchairs to children with cerebral palsy (brain-damaged) in deep rural South Africa who are desperate for wheelchairs.

They also work in informal communities in Soweto, assisting where needed and tirelessly working to touch the lives of those who have been overlooked or forgotten in society.
