When hope, courage, and the spirit of a nation come together, magic happens—like this moment, when 10-year-old Isabella, battling cancer, will get the opportunity to step onto the field with the Springboks to live her dream.

Nelspruit, Mbombela (28 September 2024) – It’s stories like these that remind us of the power of hope, dreams, and the magic of sports. The Springboks, our nation’s rugby giants, have once again teamed up with Reach For a Dream to create a moment so powerful, it’s left South Africans beaming with pride and joy.

Reach For a Dream is an organisation that has been changing lives for over 30 years by granting the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. They step in during some of the hardest moments in a child’s life, offering not just an escape, but hope, joy, and unforgettable experiences.

This week, they’ve made a special dream come true for a brave young South African.

Isabella, a 10-year-old from East London who is living with cancer, had one wish: to meet the Springboks, her heroes. And what better way to make that happen than with the nation’s beloved Bokke?

In a heartwarming social media post, the Springboks shared the news of Isabella’s dream coming true.

“Today is a very special day for 10-year-old Isabella from East London. Her dream of meeting the Springboks is about to come true. Living with cancer, rugby has always been her source of strength. Today, through a collaboration between the Springboks and Reach For a Dream, she’ll step onto the field in Nelspruit, holding Siya Kolisi’s hand to sing the national anthem before the game against Argentina.”

This moment wasn’t just about meeting her heroes; it represented something much bigger. The Springboks’ post continued to share that Isabella’s incredible courage is a shining reminder to all of us. Even during life’s toughest battles, hope is what keeps dreams alive. To make the day even more special, Isabella’s entire family has been invited to witness her once-in-a-lifetime moment from the stands. We can already feel the goosebumps rising in anticipation of that moment when she walks hand-in-hand with Siya Kolisi, standing proudly in front of a packed stadium.

Watch the clip below:

This isn’t just a story about rugby. It’s about how sport can bring us together, how it can lift up the spirits of those in need, and how the heart of a child can inspire a nation. Today, the Springboks have once again shown why they hold such a special place in our hearts. It’s moments like these that truly reflect the spirit of South Africa.

So, as we cheer for the Bokke this afternoon, we’ll be cheering even louder for Isabella, whose strength and determination remind us all of the power of hope and dreams.

South Africa, today is a day to celebrate the good!

A portrait of Kruger lion—whose eye looks as if the universe itself lies beneath it—has won an impressive photography competition category. Why? Just take a look at this photograph:

Global (27 September 2024) — A mighty lion looks directly into the camera lens. His tongue protrudes, almost as if he is looking at his next meal. His expression is intimidating, even without his majestic mane in full view. These elements alone give the onlooker a deep sense of the sublime; as if it were a snapshot from the last clear visual memory his prey ever saw. But that’s not what made this Kruger lion a winning portrait.

One eye boasts a soft, fierce flavour of amber. The other is a deep purple with hints of galactic blue peering through. In the right light, it looks as if this Kruger lion holds in his left eye, a portal to the rest of the universe. A doorway to the rest of existence. Perhaps, he does.

Australian photographer Lewis Burnett captured the breathtaking shot on a breathtaking early morning drive in the Southern half of the Kruger National Park. Here, he was lucky enough to spend nearly half an hour with the lion few will ever see up close (or ever be brave enough to).

His shot, aptly titled ‘Window to the Soul’ was entered into this year’s Nature TTL photography competition where it went on to win the Wild Portraits category for an obvious reason–it feels impossible to look away.

“Staring into the eye of this mighty male lion is enough to make you shrink back in your seat,” says Lewis.

“There’s no solid consensus as to what happened to his eye,” the photographer adds. “But weirdly enough his brother also has it. I’ve heard its genetics, that it was a spitting cobra, or perhaps it was an infection, who knows…But I do know one thing, he’s one intimidating lion!”

You can see all the entries, here.

Pretoria’s most inspiring former car guard, Dr Kapya, recently celebrated his PhD graduation ceremony, where he stood proudly as a Doctor of Industrial Engineering and proof that the odds can and should be defied:

Pretoria, South Africa (18 September 2024) — Dr Tshinangi Fabrice Kapya has come a very long way from his days working as a car guard. How much his life has changed, beamed in full clarity at the University of Pretoria’s recent graduation ceremony. Here, Dr Kapya, a PhD graduate and Doctor of Industrial Engineering, positively shone not just as an outstanding student but as someone who defied the odds and won.

For Dr Kapya, none of it would’ve been possible if it wasn’t for the encouragement he received from friends.

“I was working as a car park attendant at Wonderpark Mall in Pretoria,” Dr Kapya recalls.

“Despite the repetitive nature of my work, I discovered an unexpected source of comfort: books. Whenever I had a free moment, I devoted it to reading… my former colleagues would often catch me reading. They’d say with a mix of playfulness and sincerely: ‘Fabrice, you don’t belong here, you should go back to school.”

This was the spark that would change everything. Dr Kapya first received a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Likasi. But, with a friend’s encouragement on his side, he decided to apply to the University of Pretoria where he’d go on to be accepted for an honours degree programme—all while working as a car guard in 2019.

By 2021, he was accepted into the masters programme, and was even offered a position as an assistant lecturer in the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering!

Ambitious as ever, Dr Kapya already enrolled for his PhD before even touching the master’s graduation stage.

But, being a car guard didn’t just help him earn an income at the time. In fact, his time guarding cars actually helped map out the foundations for his research.

“While I was working at Wonderpark, I frequently observed trucks from various logistics companies delivering a ride range of products. These trucks usually followed strict schedules, ensuring that goods reached their destinations on time.

“However, when COVID-19 struck, I noticed a significant shift in consumer behaviour and the way certain products were being consumed. This shift got me thinking about the processes involved in the production of certain goods.”

Dr Kapya’s research ended up becoming focused on developing mathematic models for managing production systems for perishable goods; addressing challenges like changing production rates and demand influenced by stock.

The road to this recent graduation was long and winding. But, Dr Kapya hopes his story will inspire others to follower their dreams feverishly.

“Every morning before leaving the house, I had to remind myself that it would get better with time, that each day was an opportunity to conquer, to fight for a better future. I learnt to keep a strong face, to go to war with my depression, and to cling to my faith even when it felt like a thin thread.”—Dr Kapya.

He further thanked the University for making him feel a part of something bigger and his classmates for being champions behind his dreams—from including him in study groups to covering his transport and paying his rent when he needed help.

Loyiso Bala and PJ Powers’ cherished bond, forged in the unexpected setting of a 1995 Rugby World Cup, has been instrumental to the musician he is today and has stood the test of time.

Johannesburg, South Africa (18 September 2024) – Unexpected friendships, often filled with hilarious or heartwarming stories, are among life’s greatest gifts and have a charming way of lasting a lifetime!

Reflecting on his unique and invaluable bond with PJ “Thandeka” Powers was Loyiso Bala, when they first met back in 1995. He was just 15 at the time and was a member of the acclaimed Drakensberg Boys Choir.

The choir has been asked to sing the new national anthem with PJ at the opening of the ’95 Rugby World Cup.

“After a full day of rehearsals at the stadium, around 10 pm, we got an unexpected call: we needed to record the old anthem because the Springboks hadn’t had time to learn the new one,” Loyiso explained.

For some of us who may not know, Loyisa shared that back in the day, the old anthem was Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrika and Die Stem, sung as two separate pieces, not the united version we have today.

“So, there we were, in the early hours before the big event, recording with PJ. And while the Boks didn’t even sing along during the opening, that night I made a friend and sister for life.”

From that moment on, the two have grown to become great friends, and PJ played a valuable role in supporting Loyiso and sharing his passion for music.

“She became not only a mentor but a true supporter of my talent, always encouraging me to keep going.”

Nearly 30 years later, their friendship remains as strong as ever, and they continue to collaborate and inspire each other.

South African musician David Scott, known as The Kiffness, has turned political absurdity into viral gold, with his latest video, “Eating the Cats”, amassing over 50 million views in just one day – and all proceeds from the unexpected hit are being donated to the Springfield SPCA, proving that even in the wild world of internet humour, good things can happen.

South Africa (16 September 2024) – South Africans have long been known for their creativity and talent, and David Scott, better known as The Kiffness, is once again proving just how gifted our people are.

The musical genius from South Africa has taken the world by storm with his knack for turning viral internet moments into songs that have captivated millions. In his latest stroke of brilliance, David’s “Eating the Cats” video skyrocketed to over 50 million views in just 24 hours, with all proceeds going to a cause close to his heart – the Springfield SPCA.

David, the creative force behind The Kiffness, has built a reputation for himself by remixing viral video clips and turning them into songs that can often go on to become even more popular than the originals. His unique style, blending humour with an undeniable musical talent, has made him a global sensation. Over the years, David has gained a particular following for his cat-themed videos, which have resonated with animal lovers everywhere. So, it’s no surprise that when former US President Donald Trump recently claimed during a presidential debate that “immigrants” were eating cats, dogs, and pets in Springfield, Ohio, David knew exactly what to do.

Wasting no time, he jumped on the bizarre and unfounded statement and transformed it into a hilarious, catchy tune that took the internet by storm. In just one day, the song hit over 50 million views, sparking conversations, laughter, and a viral sensation like no other.

David shared with Good Things Guy that the song had already raised a whopping $7,000 (over R123,000) in royalties, all of which he is donating to the Springfield SPCA.

“Whether you support Trump, Harris or neither… if you watched or streamed my song “Eating the Cats”, the revenue from that is going to help stray animals in Springfield Ohio & that’s a beautiful thing.”

Although the claims have been widely discredited, the beauty of this story lies in how, amidst the chaos of political theatre, The Kiffness is using his platform for good. It’s a perfect example of how humour and creativity can come together to make a meaningful impact.

Also, we cannot wait to see what happens in the world, only to see what David comes up with next!

*The Kiffness is currently on tour in Germany. Follow his social media for updates.

Forever Green, Forever Gold, Forever United! This was not just a celebration of rugby but a celebration of everything that makes South Africa extraordinary. We are stronger together!

Western Cape. South Africa (11 September 2024) – Rugby fans were treated to a dazzling surprise in Cape Town on Saturday when SA Rugby spiced things up with a heart-thumping flash mob at the Springboks vs New Zealand match.

The atmosphere was electric as the greatest rugby rivalry returned to the Mother City after seven years, this time at the magnificent Green Point Stadium.

Gone were the familiar grounds of Newlands Stadium, and in its place, the Green Point Stadium became a new battleground for these two rugby titans. To celebrate this monumental occasion, SA Rugby pulled out all the stops, partnering with local legend Siv Ngesi and the incredible “Street Stylers” dance crew. Together, they created an unforgettable pre-game spectacle that left the crowd in awe.

Just as the anticipation was building, fans were treated to an unexpected yet exhilarating performance. In a surprise move, dancers emerged from the stands and the field, grooving to the tune of “From Now On” from The Greatest Showman and mixing it up with the infectious beats of Amapiano, one of South Africa’s most beloved music genres. It was an epic collision of song, dance, and sport, and the energy was contagious!

Fans in the stadium were caught off guard, many dropping their jaws, while others joined in, feeling the rhythm in their bones.

Social media quickly exploded with reactions, with one spectator commenting, “I don’t care who says what, but one thing I know is that we are One… And the Talent here in Mzansi is Amazing.. Thank you, Guys, for making me dance.”

Another fan added, “You will swear it was the opening ceremony of the rugby world cup!!! Amazing!! Imagine us hosting the next world cup, how awesome will the opening ceremony be.”

You can watch the full video of the flash mob and feel the magic yourself below or if you are having trouble, click here to be directed to the Springboks Facebook page.

Social media was abuzz with positivity and pride. Comments keep flooding in, with many praising the creativity and energy of the flash mob.

“Ridiculous. This country needs to just offer its services as opening and closing ceremony experts for all sporting events,” one fan joked. “We don’t need to host the thing. We’ll just go around doing it for everyone because we are literally a VIBE!”

Others expressed their deep connection to the moment, even if they weren’t there in person. “Absolutely amazing. Honest to goodness SA rugby is one of the best things on the planet (if you’re South African or get the Springbok thing). I wasn’t even there, but I can still just feel that in my heart and know that would have been an amazing experience for anyone who was there.”

As one spectator put it, “We truly are a Rainbow Nation. Imagine if we were to host the next RWC in 2027🤭🔥 Well Done Cape Town, this is beautiful.” The performance was a reminder of how sport can unite people, creating moments that transcend the game itself.

So, whether you were in the stadium on Saturday or now watching this video from afar, it is clear: South Africa knows how to put on a show like no other!

Here’s to more moments that make our hearts race and our feet dance – forever green, forever gold, and forever united!

Security officer Vincent Kwananda, critically injured while protecting others, inspires South Africans with his remarkable resilience and determination to recover and help others on their journey.

Johannesburg, South Africa (07 September 2024) – Every day, South Africans step up with immense courage, often risking their lives to protect their communities. It’s a powerful reminder of the strength and resilience that runs through the veins of this country. Vincent Kwananda, a security officer, embodies this unwavering spirit, even after facing unimaginable challenges.

Vincent, a 41-year-old security officer, was on duty at a garage shop in Delmas, Mpumalanga, when his life changed forever. On a fateful day in February last year, three armed robbers stormed in and opened fire. Vincent was shot, suffering fractures to his T1 and T2 thoracic vertebrae, leaving him with critical and life-changing injuries. He woke up in the hospital from a coma, unable to recall what had happened but knowing instinctively that his life had taken a drastic turn.

“When I woke up from a coma in the hospital, they told me what had happened. I didn’t ask many questions. I couldn’t remember anything,” Vincent recalls.

His recovery journey has been nothing short of remarkable, marked by resilience, determination, and an unbreakable spirit.

Vincent’s injuries were severe, but he was determined to overcome them. He was transferred to Netcare Rehabilitation Hospital in Auckland Park six weeks after the shooting, where his journey to regain independence began.

“When patients first arrive, they’re only just starting to recover from an acute, traumatic event. They are often anxious and still in a physical state of recovery,” explains Dr. Aneesa Khan, a general practitioner with a special interest in physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Vincent, too, faced this reality, experiencing weakness from the chest downward.

Jessica Morris, a senior occupational therapist at the hospital, noted Vincent’s limited hand movement initially.

“His occupational therapist taught him how to use assisted devices like universal cuffs to gain more independence. A year later, he can extend his fingers a little and form a grasp mostly without these devices,” she shares.

Despite these challenges, Vincent was adamant about returning to work. “He was determined to go back to work from his first day here. Our hope is that one day he will be able to be fully reintegrated back at work,” Morris adds.

However, Vincent’s recovery was not just about physical rehabilitation. He took it upon himself to mentor newer patients, offering hope and support in their journeys.

“I would talk to them and say, you know what guys, crying doesn’t change anything. When you change your mindset, things start to happen,” Vincent recalls.

His empathy and leadership provided much-needed encouragement to those around him, showing that even in the darkest moments, there is always room for light and growth.

But Vincent’s story is more than just one of survival; it’s a powerful message of hope and resilience for South Africans. His determination to recover and help others along the way serves as an inspiration to a nation often battered by the scourge of crime and violence. For Vincent, returning to work was more than just a personal victory—it was a chance to show others that recovery is possible, even in the face of overwhelming odds.

His story also brings attention to the broader issue of violence in South Africa, a major cause of spinal injuries. The theme for this year’s International Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day, “End Violence – Protect Spinal Cord,” serves as a poignant reminder of the impact of violence on individuals and communities.

As Dr. Khan notes, “There’s a lot of crime and gender-based violence-related injuries. Some of our patients have suffered devastating, life-changing injuries by being caught in the crossfire.”

Vincent’s journey has touched many lives. His spirit of never giving up, his willingness to learn new skills, and his dedication to supporting others on similar paths have made a lasting impact on those around him. His wife has stood by him every step of the way, and he credits her support as a crucial part of his recovery.

“She’s never complained, not for a single day,” he shares.

Today, Vincent continues to work as a security guard, a job that is not easy under any circumstances, let alone after such an injury. He uses his experience to motivate and teach others, helping them find their strength in moments of despair.

“When they see me, some of them can’t believe I’m alive. Some of them even cry when they see I’m in a wheelchair, and I comfort them,” he says.

Vincent’s journey is far from over, but he faces the future with optimism and determination.

As Jessica Morris reflects, “Mr. Kwananda reminds me how much the human spirit can accomplish when the person has that fight within them. The world could have given him a million reasons to give up, and he showed us a million reasons to fight harder.”

After decades of captivity, Charlie the elephant is now thriving in freedom at Shambala Private Reserve, joyfully adapting to his new life in the wild.

South Africa (05 September 2024) – Even though some global media labelled Charlie as the “saddest elephant in the world,” he’s proving them all wrong. Today, he’s a symbol of happiness, joy, and resilience. After decades of captivity and hardship, Charlie is now basking in the warmth of his new freedom, and it’s safe to say he’s never been happier.

Charlie’s story began over four decades ago in Hwange National Park, Zimbabwe, where he was born in 1982. His life took a drastic turn just two years later when he was captured and brought to South Africa to perform at the Boswell Circus. He endured years of confinement, performing tricks, and enduring harsh conditions, which left both physical and emotional scars. When his owner faced charges of animal cruelty, Charlie was transferred to a zoo in Pretoria in 2001.

There, he spent over two decades in a barren enclosure, isolated and showing signs of distress.

But that all changed recently. After years of campaigning by animal welfare organisations and the support of passionate advocates, Charlie finally got his ticket to freedom. On August 19th this year, Charlie was moved to the Shambala Private Reserve in Limpopo, marking the start of his beautiful new chapter.

A New Life in the African Savanna

For the first time, Charlie can feel the earth under his feet, the wind in his ears, and the sun on his back as he roams freely in his new home. At 42 years old, the once “saddest” elephant is now experiencing the African savanna he had been denied for so long.

To prepare him for his independent life in the wild, Charlie is receiving special care and a rich diet of vegetables, fruits, hay, and branches to help him gain the necessary weight. Yesterday, he was released into a new one-hectare enclosure within the reserve, where he can now explore the savanna, forage for food, and connect with nature.

“Charlie is a very special elephant. He is a fast learner and adapts really well to his new environment,” says Dr Marina Ivanova, a veterinarian with FOUR PAWS, the global animal welfare organisation leading his rehabilitation.

“With every day, he is starting to behave more and more like a wild elephant. It is simply beautiful to see that he has already started communicating with the other elephants in the reserve from afar.”

And the progress is remarkable. Last week, Charlie trumpeted for the first time, a sound that echoed across the reserve, and he even used his trunk to pour water over his head—a joyous moment that brought tears to the eyes of his caretakers. Just yesterday, he enjoyed his first mud bath in the wild, in over 40 years.

“It is with great joy that we are watching him settle in so well,” adds Dr. Ivanova.

The road to full freedom isn’t without its challenges, but Charlie is taking them in stride. His new enclosure at Shambala includes a pool and a mud bath—essentials for elephant skincare. It’s a crucial step before his eventual release into the full 12,000-hectare reserve, where he will have the choice to join one of two elephant groups or live independently.

To help him adjust, Charlie is on a special diet to gain weight and build muscle, preparing him for a life where he may need to walk up to 150 kilometres a day, like elephants in the wild.

“We are helping Charlie to slowly build up the needed muscles for his big release into the entire reserve,” says Dr. Ivanova.

“He is on a special diet to gain weight for his life in the wild. We are teaching him how to pick fresh branches from trees, which are important for his digestion. His favourite food is pumpkins, which he absolutely loves and devours rapidly.”

Even his feet, once neglected, are starting to heal. Charlie’s nails, cracked from years of improper care, are now being naturally shaped as he rubs them on rocks, just like wild elephants do.

A Bright Future Ahead

Charlie’s journey to freedom is far from over, but every day brings new milestones and moments of joy. He’s quickly learning to trust his new caretakers, enjoy his new environment, and behave like the wild elephant he was always meant to be. For now, his days are filled with good food, new experiences, and the simple joys of being an elephant.

As he gains strength and confidence, Charlie’s future looks incredibly bright. He’s already defied the odds, and now, he’s set to enjoy the best years of his life. With the love and support of his caretakers and the expansive reserve awaiting him, there’s no doubt—Charlie, the once “saddest elephant,” is now living his best life.

And isn’t that the best news of all?

A series of funny hypothetical questions from Siya Kolisi’s little sister, Liphelo, uncovered the rugby star’s thoughtful and protective nature.

South Africa (29 August 2024) – It’s always so wholesome to see a different side to our local heroes and icons and this time Springbok captain Siya Kolisi’s sister, Liphelo Kolisi revealed a charming and affectionate side to her big brother.

Having a big brother is like a built-in best friend who has known you all your life and is there to protect you, teach you and laugh with you while sharing life’s challenges and adventures.

In a now-trending TikTok video, the two siblings engaged in a series of hypothetical questions, offering a glimpse into their bond and Siya’s thoughtful and protective nature.

Liphelo started off strong, asking how Siya would react to her stealing his car and selling it to buy clothes for herself and her friend. Initially taken aback by the unexpected question, Siya responded that he’d be very upset.

Liphelo went on to ask what he’d do if she came back home with a tattoo, answering that he’d have a sit down with her about it even though he was pretty sure she’d never do that – to which Liphelo giggled before eventually agreeing.

She went on to ask about what he’d do if she needed to be picked up somewhere at 3am, came home drunk, snuck a boy into his home, dated a guy he didn’t approve of or secretly got married at 18.

With nervous giggles in between, Siya’s responses were pretty calm and fair, painting a picture of the thoughtful and protective big brother he is to his little sister. Urgh, it’s the feel-good content we all love to see!
