The Brighton Beach Beanie Project, which involves elders knitting gifts of love and warmth, was born from a shared desire to make a difference in the lives of children born into harsh circumstances and often lack the most basic necessities.

Durban, South Africa (21 October 2024) – Children born into challenging circumstances are a heartbreaking reality that local police officers run into way too often in the call of duty.

Moved by this, members of the Brighton Beach Police Station in Durban, along with compassionate local senior citizens, have united to form a community-based beanie project.

The Brighton Beach Beanie Project, organised by members of the Brighton Beach Police, has brought together elderly residents from across the eThekwini District who volunteer their time and talents to knit and crochet cosy clothing for these children.

With nimble fingers and hearts full of love, they have poured their souls into each stitch, creating not just garments but symbols of warmth and care.

“These skilled individuals are showcasing their talents in knitting and crocheting by creating beautiful beanies and clothing items as gifts for vulnerable children,” shared Captain Louise Le Roux of Brighton Beach SAPS.

Since its inception, the project has distributed over 1,832 beanies to organisations such as the Wentworth Hospital, Wentworth Victim Friendly Centre, Bluff Assist, Shepherd’s Keep, Journey of Hope, and Isaiah 554 Children’s Sanctuary.

Durban has been unusually cold and wet lately and just last week the beanie project was honoured to gift beautifully knitted newborn baby booties and baby slippers created by the skilled knitters and crocheters to the Wentworth hospital.

“In addition, 185 multiple-sized beanies were also gifted and the project team will continue to receive labours of love ensuring every beanie is homed,” added Le Roux.

The Bluff Assist community group is spreading joy and hope through their Unicorn Shopping initiative by providing struggling families with essential items.

Bluff, South Africa (16 September 2024) – To have some decent clean clothes beyond those on your back, a toy for your little one and a book to enrich a young mind are just some of the great desires that many struggling families have.

Offering essentials and a helping hand through a unique ‘shopping experience’ are the selfless members of the Bluff Assist community group.

The volunteers are currently collecting clothes, toys and books for their Unicorn Shopping initiative which gives back to the destitute community within the Bluff area.

“We realised our community has many vulnerable people, and many community members willing to assist,” shares Bluff Assist member Chantal Bransgrove-Bower.

The Unicorn Shopping will be the Bluff Assist Youth League’s first community event. Families will have the opportunity to bring their kids to ‘shop’ for some clothes, toys or books at no cost.

“Parents get to walk through and choose 10 items that they need. Clothes or shoes, and then kids can also choose some toys and books.

“If we have food available on the day that has been donated, we also distribute that. All items are free and sent with love and care from their community. It’s a way to help those in need, and also involve the community.”

All items on ‘sale’ will be preloved items and donated by the community to show love to a new family in need, a truly heartwarming testament to the power of community.

The Bluff community in Durban has shown its true colours through a selfless act of generosity to provide much-needed sustenance for vulnerable young lives.

Durban, South Africa (14 August 2024) – The Bluff community in Durban, like many other urban areas, faces its share of socio-economic challenges. Yet, amidst these difficulties, the Bluff’s spirit shines through.

Its people, bound by a strong sense of community, exemplify resilience and selflessness. This unwavering determination to uplift one another is the foundation upon which the community continues to thrive.

Heeding the call for food donations for Isiah 54 Sanctuary was Bluff Assist, an NPC and division of the Brighton Beach SAPS Victim Friendly Centre.

Isaiah 54 Children’s Sanctuary is a crisis home for abused, abandoned and HIV/AIDS-infected children, offering them a temporary place to call home.

Bluff Assist was able to collect many loaves of bread, polony, peanut butter, margarine and jam, which would go a long way in providing meals for the children at the temporary safe home.

“The Bluff Assist helps vulnerable people within the community and works closely with like-minded organisations. We work closely with Isiah 54 Sanctuary who are well known in the community. When they are in need we always jump to help.

“These children are all in need and need to be shown love and compassion while they go through the child welfare process. Going from place to place to collect food supplies was hard work but arriving there and seeing the kids’ faces, was an amazing reward,” shared Bluff Assist’s Chantal Bransgrove-Bower who has also got her son to give back to the community.

The organisation’s selfless efforts are a testament to the power of community and the impact of selfless acts of kindness.

“Thank you to each person who assisted by donating items, dropping off and spreading the word. We cannot do these things without you. For the community, by the community,” Chantal added.
