Afrika Tikkun is empowering and nurturing a new generation of agricultural leaders who are poised to transform the country’s food insecurity crisis.

Johannesburg, South Africa (21 October 2024) – Food insecurity remains a big problem in our country. At Afrika Tikkun, food security isn’t just about providing a meal; it’s about creating sustainable solutions that empower individuals and communities.

Through its agriculture-driven initiatives, the organisation is helping young people reclaim their power by realising the value of planting their own food.

On World Food Day, observed on 16 October, Afrika Tikkun celebrated the success of its Garden-to-Kindergarten (G2K) and Agripreneurship Programmes.

Through the G2K initiative, an understanding of and love for planting vegetables is cultivated for children aged between 2 and 6 years in the Bambanani Childhood Development (ECD) programme. Here, they are also educated about nutrition and the importance of healthy eating.

With a pressing need to address hunger, poverty, and food scarcity in the country, the innovative Agripreneurship Programme, is also equipping young people with the skills and knowledge to become self-sufficient and contribute to their communities’ well-being by completing the 12-month training.

From planting seeds in the garden to managing thriving farms, these young agripreneurs get to learn the art of sustainable agriculture.

Aligned with the 2024 World Food Day theme – Right to Food for a Better Life and a Better Future – the programme drives positive change by nurturing a new generation of farmers who understand the importance of producing nutritious, affordable and safe food for South African communities.

The Agripreneurship programme is currently operational in Diepsloot, Sasolburg and Empangeni in northern KwaZulu-Natal, with a total of 188 active candidates.

According to Afrika Tikkun, the 2023 graduates have already secured positions within retail stores, managing fruit and vegetable sections, highlighting the success of the programme in integrating young people into the agricultural economy.

With practical training conducted in modern greenhouses, these graduates are now fully equipped to grow, cultivate and supply nutritious food, supporting the broader World Food Day goal of increasing food diversity and availability in local communities.

“This initiative, part of Afrika Tikkun’s Cradle-to-Career 360° philosophy, is about more than just farming – it’s about fostering entrepreneurship and ensuring that young South Africans have the tools they need to thrive in the agricultural sector.

“By learning how to establish their own farms and urban agricultural projects, these young agripreneurs are poised to not only alleviate hunger in their communities but also create sustainable livelihoods for themselves,” said Afrika Tikkun Agriculture CEO Alan Fleming.

As South Africa continues to grapple with the challenges of food insecurity, these young agripreneurs are a beacon of hope. They are producing nutritious, affordable food, reducing reliance on imports, and creating a more resilient food system.

Four young South African ambassadors from Afrika Tikkun represented their country with pride at the prestigious Spirit of Belron Challenge in the United Kingdom.

Johannesburg, South Africa (30 September 2024) – Four young South African ambassadors from Afrika Tikkun, dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children and youth in underprivileged communities, have returned home from a triumphant journey to the United Kingdom.

Representing their country at the prestigious Spirit of Belron Challenge (SOBC), these inspiring individuals played a vital role in transforming the lives of countless South Africans.

The fun-filled 10-day event brought together 10,500 participants who cycled, ran, walked, swam, and travelled by wheelchair to raise as much money as possible for Afrika Tikkun.

For 18-year-old Shaylet Sibanda, 17-year-old Masego Modiga and 16-year-old Matodzi Muluadzi, this journey marked their first international event and a significant milestone, offering them a chance to showcase their talents and resilience.

“The Spirit of Belron Challenge was more than just a competition; it was a celebration of teamwork, perseverance, and the human spirit.

“Our ambassadors not only represented Afrika Tikkun with pride but also demonstrated the transformative power of opportunity and hard work, the organisation shared in a statement.

The ambassadors’ participation in this event is a testament to their dedication and the support they receive from our organisation.

“We are immensely proud of our ambassadors and their accomplishments at the Spirit of Belron Challenge. Their success is a shining example of what can be achieved when young people are allowed to thrive.”

Afrika Tikkun has always been a place where dreams come true. This year, the event raised 2 million Euros, with participants walking, running, cycling, swimming, and using wheelchairs to complete a total of 64,000 kilometres.

“Our mission to empower young people by providing them with diverse experiences continues to bear fruit, as evidenced by the remarkable achievements of our ambassadors in the UK. This event has further solidified our commitment to changing lives and creating future leaders.”

A group of passionate young cyclists from diverse backgrounds forged strong bonds as they embarked on a challenging 700km journey from Johannesburg to Durban.

Johannesburg, South Africa (28 August 2024) – Imagine the thrill of exploring South Africa’s breathtaking landscapes by bike, sharing unforgettable adventures with a diverse group of colourful personalities. That’s precisely what the 2024 Cycalive Ride 2 Durban was all about.

Learners from Pace College, Moletsane High, Afrika Tikkun, and Torah Academy Boys High embarked on this exhilarating 700km cycling event from Johannesburg to Durban, celebrating South Africa’s rich cultural tapestry.

The ride began on 18 August, and the riders received a warm welcome from the KZN Jewry upon their arrival in Durban on Friday, 23 August.

The race, which brings together learners from different communities in a shared journey of discovery and achievement, underscores the importance of celebrating our diverse cultures, beliefs, and traditions, Afrika Tikkun shares.

According to Afrika Tikkun, the founder of Cycalive Ride 2 Durban and principal of Torah Academy, Rabbi Dovid Hazdan dreamed of a cycling adventure to Durban that everyone could join regardless of their background. With the help of other schools and sponsors, this dream became a reality.

The Cycalive Ride 2 Durban continues to be a beacon of unity and resilience, inspiring young South Africans to embrace their heritage and work together towards a brighter future.
