For years, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has captured hearts across the world, and many of our Good Things Guy readers eagerly wait for the announcement of its release. Though we don’t get the calendars physically in South Africa, our annual article is the next best thing!

Since its launch in 1993, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has raised over $3.5 million for charities across Australia and beyond. And 2025 is no different – the calendar will continue supporting vital causes, from wildlife rescues to children fighting cancer. This year, the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital is one of the proud recipients of the calendar’s charity donations, helping rescue and rehabilitate injured wildlife.

As Dr Bree Talbot, Head Wildlife Veterinary Surgeon at the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital, beautifully puts it: “This generous support allows us to continue saving Australian wildlife and making a lasting difference.”

But it’s not just about the pictures – these firefighters have become global conservation ambassadors, using their fame to raise awareness for causes like the protection of Australian wildlife. The 2025 calendar editions feature over 25 firefighters from aviation, military, and urban fire services. Each month reveals heart-warming photos of these heroes with animals like koalas, kittens, and even horses.

There are five different editions this year, so there’s a calendar for every animal lover out there!

With the 2025 Australian Firefighters Calendar, we get a feel-good mix of bravery, kindness, and a whole lot of cuteness. What more could you ask for? The 2024 Australian Firefighters Calendar brings together heroes and adorable animals to warm hearts and support vital charities around the world.

Global (23 October 2023) – The Australian Firefighters Calendar, eagerly awaited by many Good Things Guy readers as an annual tradition, has just been launched for 2024, promising an unforgettable year ahead.

Now in its remarkable 31st year of production, this iconic calendar stands as a symbol of the goodwill and dedication of Australia’s favourite heroes – the firefighters. But it’s not just about baring biceps and those winning smiles; it’s about coming together to support those who need it most. Since its inception in 1993, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has been a beacon of hope, having donated over 3.4 million dollars to various charities across Australia. It’s a legacy of love that spans over three decades, and this tradition of giving back continues with the 2024 edition.

This calendar isn’t just another collection of breathtaking images, though it has those in abundance. It’s a symbol of hope, a gesture of compassion. With every purchase, you’re contributing to causes that matter deeply.

“I have had a love for firefighting ever since I was a kid visiting my dad at the station he worked at. The brotherhood and camaraderie was always something I strived for but never fully understood until I joined the fire service 6 years ago. That family atmosphere is exactly what I found when I was asked to be a part of the 2024 Australian Firefighters Calendar. I was able to firsthand see the amazing people, animals, and unique environment that Australia has to offer. Most importantly I had the opportunity to interact with the numerous charities and foundations that the calendar benefits and learn of the importance of conservation efforts in order to protect our wildlife and environment. We live on one shared planet and this is a message I am more than happy to take back to the States and share with my audience. And oh yeah, I almost forgot…ripped Firefighters with adorable animals. I think people might enjoy that as well.,” Caden Troy – St. Lucie County Fire District, United States of America

This year’s recipients of the calendar’s benevolence include the Queensland Koala Society, the Kids with Cancer Foundation, the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital (BBWH), Safe Haven Animal Rescue, and many more. Each of these organizations represents a glimmer of light in the lives of those they serve. From aiding sick and injured Koalas to providing financial assistance to families battling childhood cancer, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has become a lifeline for the most vulnerable.

But what sets this calendar apart is not just the good it does but also the international admiration it garners. Found on the walls of supporters in over 90 countries worldwide, including South Africa, it’s become more than just an annual tradition; it’s a global phenomenon.

The firefighters featured in the calendar are not just local heroes; they’re international icons of compassion.

“Firefighting was my dream as a little boy. I remember playing with all my little fire truck toys pretending to respond to emergencies and being fascinated every time I saw a real-life fire truck ripping to calls. As I grew up, I realised that it’s not superheroes that are doing this job but actual people. From That moment on I knew firefighting was what I wanted to do! I applied and went through all the rigorous tests and had the opportunity to become a firefighter at a really young age. It’s been 9 years now and I haven’t looked back. One of the most dynamic and demanding jobs but also the most rewarding being able to serve your community and help people on the worst days of their lives,” Steven Gionappilous – Ottawa Fire Service, Canada

Over 25 Australian firefighters from aviation, military, and urban fire services came together for a month-long photoshoot to create six distinct calendar editions. Each month tells a unique story, featuring a firefighter with some of Australia’s most adorable animals. From cuddly koalas to playful kittens, these visuals capture the tenderness that these firefighters stand for, both in and out of uniform. And due to the incredible demand from previous editions, the Dog, Cat, Horse, Mixed Animal, and Classic Calendars are back. But there’s an exciting addition to the 2024 collection – the ‘Hero’ Calendar. This edition showcases action shots of our handsome firefighters doing what they do best – battling fires and saving lives.

With the new year on the horizon, it’s the perfect time to celebrate these firefighters and their dedication to making the world a better place.

Because everyone loves shirtless firefighters that are also doing good things for charities around the globe!

South Africa (21 October 2022) – Since its launch 30 years ago, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has donated millions of dollars to charities and has become the world’s most popular calendar.

Funds from calendar sales over the last three decades have supported medical research into sourcing better methods to treat severe burns in children. The calendar also has a proud history of supporting animal refugees and Australian Wildlife in the past, and that will continue into the future.

Taking into account the extraordinary difference that the calendar and the firefighters have made, we feel it is also important to get to know some of the real-life heroes who take part in the world’s most iconic calendar.

Dennis Fay & Gertie | Photo Cred: Australian Firefighters Calendar

One of those firefighters is Dennis Fay, a proud indigenous Torres Strait islander. Born on the tiny island of Badu (located between Australia and New Guinea), Dennis is a returned military veteran who was also a world-ranked Muay Thai fighter. Along with his full-time job as an Aviation Firefighter, Dennis is now also fighting for another cause, something more important than anything he could achieve in the ring…. the preservation of marine life surrounding Badu.

To assist in the sustainability of the ocean vital to his people’s way of life, Dennis is doing his utmost to keep the waters surrounding Badu free of discarded plastic. Badu’s once pristine oceans and beaches have become littered with harmful plastic and this plastic is devastating the local marine life. Working with locals, Dennis is ingeniously helping his community by recycling discarded plastic and transforming it into diving flippers. This initiative is proving to be a huge opportunity for his community, providing vital jobs and also helping to keep the waters of Badu clean.

“Our hope is that by promoting authentic indigenous artists on our flippers that we can share our connection to nature with the world. Our aim is to repurpose something that was harmful to our environment into a product we can use back in the ocean to support the community. I have aligned our work with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals program (SDG), which is of particular importance to our island and the UN’s Responsible Consumption and Production and Life Below Water initiatives. These programs are going to be very important in transforming our part of the world and providing a better way of life for my community” – Dennis Fay – Aviation firefighter.

Brenden Purvis & Polo | Photo Cred: Australian Firefighters Calendar

Another calendar firefighter that has served his community for many years is Brenden Purvis. Every long hot summer, unsung Australian heroes give up their time and tragically sometimes their lives to keep our rural areas safe during these unforgiving months. Before Brenden became a Royal Australian Airforce firefighter, he was a member of his local Rural Fire Brigade (RFS) from the age of 16.

“Serving in the Rural Fire Brigade with my community members inspired me to serve my country further. When I was old enough, I enlisted with the Royal Australian Air Force. Before I left for my first deployment overseas, I was also able to convince my Mum to get involved in the Wamuran Rural Fire Brigade organisation too. Mum is still a serving member of the Rural Fire Brigade, far exceeding the number of years I was there. Mum’s involvement in serving our community fills me with immense pride” – Brenden Purvis – Royal Australian Airforce firefighter.

Before joining Fire Rescue Victoria, Ben Wallace had a distinguished career in the Australian Army. Deployed for three active tours of Iraq and one tour of Afghanistan, Ben’s work in these war-torn countries changed the lives of countless families desperate for peace and safety.

“In Afghanistan, I was deployed with the Australian Army Reconstruction Task Force. Our job was to build schools for young Afghani girls; my role was to protect the members of our task force and the Afghani girls from the Taliban. The schools we provided made it possible for these young girls to be educated, which in turn, provided better opportunities for them and their families”. – Ben Wallace – Fire Rescue Victoria firefighter.

Ricky Smith | Photo Cred: Australian Firefighters Calendar

A hero of a different kind, Ricky Smith served his community as a Surf Lifesaver for 23 years before joining the Queensland Fire and Emergency Service (QFES). Australia is known around the world for its beautiful beaches and keeping our beachgoers safe are our equally famous Australian Surf Lifesavers. Joining his first surf club as an 8-year-old, Ricky finished his surf lifesaving career as a professional surf lifesaver, rescuing swimmers from Australia’s unpredictable and sometimes treacherous oceans every summer.

“The most rewarding part of being a surf lifesaver was rescuing people from a potentially life-threatening event and that’s why I wanted to continue serving the community by joining the fire service. For the past six years, I have been able to continue helping people when they are at their most vulnerable” – Ricky Smith – QFES firefighter.

Studying finance and commerce through school and University, Matt Ross was headed for a life in high finance working for one of Australia’s biggest banks. After achieving his original goal of working in his chosen field, he found that something was missing in his life. Matt wanted to seek a career in something more community-based. Matt threw in his high-paying job to embark on the challenge of becoming a firefighter.

“Although the selection process for the fire service was long and extremely competitive, it was well worth the effort. In the fire service, I have found a more community-focused and fulfilling career. Due to the serious nature of firefighting, I found it necessary to increase my overall fitness level to keep up with the rigours of the job” Matt Ross – Fire Rescue Victoria firefighter.

All the most popular editions are back, the new edition for our 30 years anniversary is the all-new denim edition. Last year the firefighters wanted to spice things up by producing a summer calendar. This year the firefighters have decided to wear denim jeans and the images are sizzling hot.

All the regular fan favourites are back, including Australia’s hottest firefighters in the classic calendar. The dog calendar features the firefighters with rescue dogs from Safe Haven Animal Rescue and All Breeds Canine rescue. The horse calendar features therapy horses from Healing Hooves. All the cats for this year’s cat calendar were rescued from Best Friends Felines.

“Our hope is the images from this year’s calendars will inspire the public to adopt a pet from one of these vital organisations.

The most popular edition is always the mixed animal calendar. Australia’s most recognizable animal, the Koala features every year on the cover. Since this edition was created 5 years ago, it is the cover that all the firefighters want to feature on. This calendar is always coveted by international fans and media outlets around the globe.”

Because everyone loves shirtless firefighters that are also doing good things for charities around the globe!

Global (09 November 2021) – Now in its 29th year, the Australian Firefighters Calendar have produced six 2022 editions. As always, the favourite Cats, Dogs, Horse, Classic and Mixed Animal calendar featuring Australian wildlife will be on offer.

To heat things up and for the first time ever, there is the Summer edition calendar featuring firefighters enjoying the Australian beaches and having fun in the sun. The inaugural Summer calendar cover has been taken out by Australia’s fittest firefighter Matt Haydon.

With a proud 29-year history of supporting worthy causes within Australia, it was time to begin to help those in need internationally.

The Australian Firefighters Calendar is teaming up with a well-known US-based organisation, the Greater Good Charities. Sales of this year’s calendar will support Greater Good Charities’ Rescue Rebuild program, which helps to renovate animal shelters, domestic violence shelters, and homeless shelters to help pets and the people who care for them.

One of the projects the Greater Good Charities will be supporting will be the ‘Lost Our Home’ renovation. The Greater Goods Rescue Build team will carry out the project in conjunction with the Jackson Galaxy Project.

Existing shelter rooms will be redesigned for animals requiring comfort after coming in from domestic violence situations.

“The Greater Good Charities are so excited to be partnering with the Australian Firefighters Calendar; we have been a huge supporter of their work through our social media channels for years now. This will be the start of a long-lasting partnership on charity projects across the US” Lesley Cave – Director of Partnerships – Greater Good Charities.

For the first time in its 29-year history, the calendar will be printed outside Australia for the US market. The calendars will be printed in Dallas, Texas and distributed for the US, Canadian, South American and Asian supporters.

“The US has been such a huge supporter of the Australian Firefighters Calendar over many years now. We are so happy to be in a position to begin donating to US-based charities now and into the future. To be partnering with an organisation as well respected as Greater Good Charities is the opportunity we have been waiting for. It was really important to us that the product was printed in the US by an American company employing American workers. For the Australian Firefighters, it’s really exciting to be involved” David Rogers – Director – Australian Firefighters Calendar.

The support from the Australian Firefighters Calendar to the US is born from a gesture of goodwill between 2 countries. The overwhelming support from the American people will never be forgotten by Australia when we suffered through the worst bushfires in recent memory. The money that was raised by our US fans went to support native Australian animals that were severely injured. One of the incredible local based charities supported by the calendar donation was the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital.

From humble beginnings 2 years ago, a handful of passionate veterinary surgeons and nurses came together to establish the Hospital. Through the determination of the local community in Byron Bay, they were able to raise enough money to build Australia’s first mobile wildlife hospital.

“The support the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital received from the US was phenomenal, and it continues to this day. The funds have enabled us to start building another mobile hospital to support our wildlife in the event of further wildfires”. Stephen Van Mil – CEO – The Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital

“When the bushfires occurred earlier this year, I had a nine-week-old baby at home and felt helpless for all the wildlife that were affected. When this position popped up on my computer, I applied straight away as I felt I could really try and make a difference” Dr Bree Talbot – Wildlife Veterinarian – Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital.

The Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital is one of the many important native hospitals that the calendar will support again this year.

The 2022 Australian Firefighters Calendar will also be supporting the following organisations;

  • Native Animal Rescue
  • Wildcare Inc
  • Safe Haven Animal Rescue
  • Australian Seabird Rescue
  • Fauna Rescue of SA
  • Healing Hooves
  • Thrive to Survive
  • Kids With Cancer Foundation
  • Currumbin Wildlife Hospital

Since 1993 firefighters from Australia’s Urban, Rural, Aviation, Armed Forces and Corporate fire-fighting services have been coming together to create the world’s most iconic calendar… and 2021 is all about the animals!

Australia (13 October 2020) – Just when we were all about to give up on the disaster that is 2020, the Aussie firefighters have come to save the year… well 2021 anyway.

From its humble beginnings, The Australian Firefighters Calendar was established in 1993 to support the Children’s Hospital Foundation, providing funds for research into childhood burns. Now in its 28th year, The Australian Firefighters Calendar has raised over $3.2 million for various charities.

Since 1993 firefighters from Australia’s Urban, Rural, Aviation, Armed Forces and Corporate fire-fighting services have been coming together to create the world’s most iconic calendar. After 3 rigorous weeks of photography, the final images are put together to create the annual calendar for fans across the globe.

And the 2021 version comes out in six possible options: Classic, Hero, Animal, Animal lovers, Cats and Dogs.

“2019 and early 2020 was a particularly devastating time, and the world grieved with Australia as we suffered through catastrophic bushfires, and an estimated loss of 1 billion animals from our diverse native wildlife,” The Australian Firefighters Calendar team explained.

“While the fires may have gone, the destroyed bushland has made it impossible for many of the displaced wildlife to return to their natural habitat.”

According to “Bored Panda”, these years, Animal Lovers Calendar will be more important than ever.

“While funds from last year’s 2020 calendar helped pay for new equipment and supplies for nearly 6 months, the 2021 edition should play a vital role in treating injured wildlife from the recent fires.”
