Imagine spending the holidays alone, with no visitors and no gifts. For many elderly people residing in old age homes, this is a heartbreaking reality. But, you can help bring them a little cheer this Christmas.

Durban, South Africa (20 October 2024) – Oftentimes, when we talk about spreading the magic and joy of Christmas, it is about children, overlooking that our oldies could also do with some spoils and love too!

Playing their part to make sure our grannies and grandpas in old age homes don’t get left out in the cold, is the Robin Hood Foundation through its annual Bless a Granny & Grandpa campaign.

Every year the campaign fulfils over 2,500 wishes of the elderly people in homes, bringing love, joy and care to those often forgotten.

As the season of giving approaches, the foundation reminds us that giving is not just about donating but more about making a difference.

“For many, the Bless a Granny & Grandpa visits are not just a highlight of their year—it is often the only moment of warmth and connection they experience.

“Imagine, for a moment, receiving just one gift all year, or having only one visitor walk through your door. That is the reality for so many elderly individuals we care for,” the foundation shared.

But this year, you can be the light that brightens their day, by offering a hand that offers not just a present as well as a sense of belonging.

The campaign will bring warmth to 18 old age homes in and around Durban.

“Each visit will be a morning filled with tea, treats, laughter, and, most importantly, the heartfelt gifts that you help provide.”

How to make a wish come true

To make an oldie’s wish come true, all you need to do is make a pledge on how many grannies or grandpas you’d like to buy a Christmas gift for by emailing info@ronbinhoodfoundation.co.za

Thereafter you can shop for the item(s) to the value of R250-R300 and place it in a gift bag with the tags provided.

Lastly, you can deliver or drop off the gifts at the various Durban drop-off points.

A violin stolen over two years ago has finally made its way back to its owner! An instrument of immense sentimental value, the violin was the last gift Petrus de Beer received from his mother before she passed away.

Cape Town, South Africa (07 October 2024) — A violin has finally made its way home after over two years spent missing from its original owner, the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra’s principal first violin, Petrus de Beer.

Stolen in July 2022 from the boot of Petrus’ car in Cape Town, the moment the violin was discovered to be gone, a gaping hole formed in the violinist’s heart.

Not simply a case of missing a musical instrument, this violin held immense sentimental value for Petrus. After all, it was the very last gift he had received from his mother before she passed away.

Despite a determined search for his beloved violin that took matters to both the police and the media, the violin would become a missing case for two more winters.

Unbeknownst to Petrus, the violin had embarked on a journey of its own. As the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra shares, the violin had ended up as an item for sale at a local flea market all those months ago, which is how it found its way to the people who’d eventually spur the reunion—Wally and Beatrice van Staden.

One day, as the pair was cleaning out their belongings in preparation for a move, the van Staden’s decided to Google the value of the violin. Unexpectedly, this took them down a rabbit hole that would eventually lead to Petrus!

Last month, on 8 September, Petrus got to relish in the moment that at one point seemed impossible—reuniting with his violin. In an extra sprinkle of serendipity, this reunion just so happened to be on the anniversary of his mother’s death 13 years before.

Immersed with the kind of joy that only a happy ending can fill one with, Petrus decided to pay the experience forward. He has since donated another violin of sentimental value (the violin that started his career) to the Youth Orchestra’s student Corban Beukes, a budding 16-year-old musician from Brackenfell who got to play his new violin for the first time over the weekend!

South Africans have an extraordinary way of turning small acts of kindness into life-changing moments, and a car guard’s unexpected hospital visit is a shining example of just how deeply we care for one another.

Johannesburg, South Africa (07 October 2024) – South Africans are inherently kind, aren’t we? Beneath the daily hustle and bustle, we have a nation brimming with warmth, kindness, and a heart that never stops giving. No matter the challenges, we somehow find ways to uplift one another, offering small acts of humanity that ripple out into much bigger things. And here’s a perfect story that highlights that very spirit.

Marian Gray-Wilson shared a story on social media that beautifully encapsulates this sense of community. It’s a simple yet heartwarming story about a car guard named Guy – or “Gee” as some call him – who noticed one of his regular “customers” wasn’t around and decided to check in on him. But this wasn’t just any check-in; it was an extraordinary act of kindness.

In South Africa, car guards play an essential role in everyday life, especially in shopping centres and busy parking areas. They keep an eye on vehicles while their owners are away, ensuring safety in exchange for a small tip or gesture of appreciation. Beyond providing a valuable service, the car guard role also helps create employment in a country facing harrowing unemployment rates. Though often seen as informal work, it offers a lifeline to many, helping them support their families and become part of the community. In many cases, like Guy’s, these bonds go beyond a transaction, leading to incredible acts of humanity.

Samantha, the granddaughter of 84-year-old Gavin, often took her grandpa shopping at Karaglen, where they parked on the Woolies side. Guy always greeted them with enthusiasm and warmth despite knowing they didn’t always have cash to tip him. In place of a few coins, Samantha would occasionally buy him a loaf of bread or a drink – that small gesture became a symbol of their growing bond.

Unfortunately, Gavin fell ill and was admitted to Edenvale hospital. On Samantha’s next visit to the shops, she was alone, and Guy immediately noticed. He asked where Gavin was, and she told him that her grandpa was in the hospital.

What happened next was completely unexpected.

Guy didn’t just express his concern—he and his wife went to visit Gavin in the hospital! It’s the kind of story that leaves you speechless, a simple loaf of bread and a few kind words blossoming into something far greater.

Samantha shared her thoughts: “He is the most amazing human being. When he asked me on Tuesday what ward Gramps is in, I had no idea he was planning on going to visit him. Just awesome.”

This beautiful gesture sparked an emotional response on social media.

One comment read, “I had a proper cry when Sam told me this story,” while another added, “So moving, many great car guards out there. Love this story!” Yet another follower wrote, “He really is a good things Guy. Well done, Guy, for showing compassion for others. May you be blessed with good things in your future.”

It’s not just about what’s in your wallet—it’s about the heart behind the exchange. And even though we’re often distracted by our own busy lives, moments like these remind us just how much kindness and connection matter.

South Africa is a place where even the smallest gestures, like a loaf of bread or a visit to a hospital, can lead to the biggest acts of humanity.

Not only did epic artist Chris Wevers change the lives of two dogs by adopting them from the Springs SPCA, but he also left the organisation a special gift to celebrate all the other animals on their journey homeward—a new ‘Going Home’ mural!

Springs, South Africa (06 October 2024) — After adopting two dogs from the Springs SPCA, epic artist Chris Wevers decided to give the SPCA a special gift of their own.

Putting his artistic talents to heartwarming use, Chris sat for hours to doll up their wall—creating something of a colourful light at the end of the tunnel in the form of a gorgeous ‘Going Home’ mural!

Filled with galactic spray-painted colours, a handsome cat and an adorable pup, the wall now stands proudly as the place where animals will be photographed with their new owners. Did we mention that Chris finished the whole project in a day?

While it’s a huge reflection of his talents, it’s also a reflection of his heart.

The Springs SPCA were ‘absolutely blown away’ by the result, which will now mark many hopeful and happy moments for the animals in their care. For them, Chris isn’t just an epic artist but an earth angel.

Meanwhile, in other news of animal heroes stepping up, Cape Town teenager Riley Valentine has made good on his birthday tradition of donating gifts to the Animal Welfare Society of SA, celebrating his 13th birthday and lots of dog food with them!

Siphiso was begging on the street, plagued by a cyst that had left him disfigured. But, a lot would change after the Angel Network got involved, including Siphiso’s long-awaited surgical help! Now, he has function of both his eyes once again and a bigger smile to boast:

Sandton, South Africa (10 September 2024) — In 2023, the Angel Network’s Glynne Goldberg Wolman shared the story of Siphiso—a man she initially described as truly kind, warm, special and in need of a break in life. He had spent a lot of time begging on the streets of Sandton and had become disfigured due to a cyst he’d been born with. However, Siphiso’s life was about to start changing.

After Glynne shared his plight and asked her network of angels to get involved, the first order of business was to find out what kind of medical specialist he needed to be put in touch with.

Slowly but surely, the village it would take to help him, began to fall into place. In November of that year, Siphiso got an MRI, an ultrasound and a CT scan. These tests revealed the great news that his cyst was benign, there had been no mutations and that the eye covered by the cyst was functional—a series of important revelations made possible by many, including Lerato Breesh (who made the arrangements happen) and Brenda Stern who helped guide and support his journey.

Surgery awaited!

By May this year, Siphiso’s cyst had mostly been removed, with Hazel Jacobson making sure that he had gotten to the hospital for his surgery, safe and sound. The rest of the cyst would be successfully removed at a later stage; giving Siphiso his face back at last.

In a recent update earlier this month, Glynne shared the news that the Angel Network community had long been waiting for: Siphiso was clear of his cyst and able to use both of his eyes once again in what has been a life-changing chapter.

“It is true that it takes a village to do most things and this situation is no different. It took my son David to get us to help Siphiso initially [and] all our incredibly kind and generous members to donate to his cause,” reflects Glynne.

However, Siphiso’s happy ending is still only halfway there and can only truly be realised once he is off the streets.

Per Glynne, Siphiso has gone into rehab to begin another chapter and get clean. Following this part of his journey, the Angels hope to help him find a job to kickstart his new life.

It might be time for this ‘stop-go’ coordinator to trade roads for stages! With the kind of energy that could turn any motorists’ frown upside down, Chapman’s Peak got to enjoy its own joy-filled roadshow:

Chapman’s Peak, South Africa (06 September 2024) — We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: traffic co-ordinators in South Africa are just built different. From traffic officers giving the Eastern Cape demure dance moves to kickstart their days to the ‘stop-go’ legend we’re about to fill you in on—South Africa knows a thing or two about turning ‘let’s get this show on the road’ into a very literal expression.

Recently on Chapman’s Peak, motorists were met with someone who might just be the happiest person to ever tell cars to stop and go, perhaps in history.

With the kind of moves that would stop traffic even if there weren’t any roadworks on display, the ‘stop-go’ man has stolen the internet’s attention for all the right reasons.

Shared by TikTok user Fazlie, the video has soared to over 700,000 views with many sharing that it gave them the extra dose of joy they needed, and others adding that he certainly deserves a raise.

A seemingly insignificant pen mishap caused Vanessa and Athini—two strangers—to cross paths at a local store. When Vanessa noticed Athini struggling to see, she made the heartwarming decision to buy her new specs in what has become a treasured moment for both of them and all who read the story!

spar hero of the week

Sea Point, South Africa (04 September 2024) — Those of us who weren’t blessed with 20-20 vision (or the kind of vision that doesn’t require extensive squinting for that matter) know the utter dismay of having our specs break.

It’s like going from a world of clarity to the depths of a murky swimming pool. Except you can’t come up for air.

This was the case for shop assistant Athini, whose broken specs had rendered her to rely on her limited vision. But little did she know, a stranger would soon come into the store packing not only a broken pen in need of exchanging, but also a wealth of kindness.

Vanessa Frankal was going through her own moment of distress. A broken bee-themed pen, black ink all over her hands and a birthday card to write. On a mission to get a new pen, Vanessa headed to the store of purchase where she’d cross paths with Athini.

“While [Athini’s] manager was scanning the pen price on her computer, I noticed Athini squinting at her managers’ screen and really struggling to see it right up close. I didn’t want to be rude but gently asked, ‘Do you wear glasses?’ She answered ‘yes’ and then continued to struggle to see the screen.

“I asked her ‘Did you forget to bring them to work?’ And she said, ‘No they broke, I need new ones.’ I insensitively said, ‘oh why don’t you get new ones? You are really struggling to see the screen! She answered, ‘I know, all the customers are commenting. But I can’t afford new ones.’ When I asked how much they cost I was shocked and then figured she wasn’t in any position to afford that,” recounts Vanessa.

Without hesitation, Vanessa decided that she was going to buy Athini new specs!

Together, the two popped over to the nearby shopping centre, where an optometrist stood only an escalator ride away.

There, Athini had her eyes checked out, and to no one’s surprise, she needed new glasses very badly.

Vanessa was hot on the optometrist’s heels, checking in to see whether Athini had gotten her glasses and following up with the optometrist when they were still on their way. Luckily, it wasn’t too long until the message came through that the glasses were ready and waiting!

“We quickly went together and when she got the glasses she burst into the biggest smile and said she loved them. As she put them on, and looked around the store, she came towards me to give me a hug and then she just started sobbing and sobbing in my arms—with relief that she could see!! Then I started crying, then the assistant started crying…and then the optometrist came to give her a big hug,” Vanessa shares.

“It was one of my most special moments that I will treasure always.”

Of what inspired her to act so selflessly, Vanessa says that it was simply “how cruel that someone can’t enjoy the luxury of sight, and has to live with such vulnerability, simply because they can’t afford it.”

“I said to Athini, ‘Isn’t it funny that it was a broken pen that brought me to you!’ She told me her Mom told her, ‘This wasn’t an accident, God sent this person to you.”

Vanessa encourages anyone whose heart has been touched by her story to pay it forward in their own worlds.

“I encourage whoever is reading this to do any random act of kindness (big or small) to someone who is more vulnerable than you. The absolute gift is in the giving.”

From her initial rescue from a life-threatening poaching snare in 2020 (which was a massive good news story in and of itself) to moments of growth like her 600kg weigh-in, recognition of all the hearts she’s stolen over the years, a storybook in her honour and even a film premiere, Khanyisa’s early life has been filled with so much love and support, it rivals Disney films.

Now Khanyisa is almost five years old and will celebrate her birthday later this month in style.

The Hoedspruit Elephant Rehabilitation and Development (HERD) team, who are both her family and the reason Khanyisa’s story is a happy one, are preparing to celebrate her day in a unique way that’s a testament to the love for her from all over the country.

They are inviting everyone to get arty for the elephant and create unique T-shirt designs for her birthday!

Anyone looking for an excuse to let their creativity flow can create a work of art inspired by the ellie and send it to the HERD team. Their top-choice creation will then be added to the HERD shop; a space that channels funds to make their work for their elephant orphans like Khanyisa possible.

The choice of medium is up to the creator and all design entries need to be emailed to marketing@herd.org.za by 26 September—Khanyisa’s birthday!

Also on the cards for Khanyisa’s birthday plans is the exciting news that another book in the ellie’s honour is set to be released—Khanyisa Braveheart children’s book.

“She is our Meisiekind, our survivor, and this new HERD children’s book captures her tale through beautiful illustrations by Aldin Tigere, the son of our very own Elephant Manager, Tigere Matipedza, who is based in Zimbabwe,” share HERD.

All profits will head to the care of HERD elephants, and you can order your copy here.

A new baby black rhino orphan has fortunately found her way to the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary! A rare and beautiful baby girl, the task has called for seasoned black rhino whisperer, caregiver Lucas to step in and make sure she feels at home.

South Africa (23 August 2024) — Last week, the Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary shared the bittersweet news that a new baby rhino orphan had been taken into their care. A member of the critically endangered black rhino family, the sweet and very special little girl was taken into their ICU, where her health would be monitored.

The Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary shared that the 3-month-old girl had been under round-the-clock care since her arrival, but showed hopeful signs of strength, stability and a serious love of milk.

After her desensitising blindfold and earplugs were removed, it was time for the little rhino calf to begin the next phase of her journey at the Sanctuary. But, she needed a little help from a top-tier caregiver to do this—enter caregiver Lucas, the ‘Black Rhino Whisperer’!

As the Sanctuary shares:

“Black rhinos are considerably different in personality, temperament, and behaviour compared to white rhinos. These differences are particularly noticeable in small calves, which means that the care and rehabilitation program for a black rhino is quite different from that of a white rhino.

“This is why we called in our resident black rhino calf expert, Caregiver Lucas!”

Lucas is said to be a seasoned caregiver with a knack for creating bonds with black rhino calves, who tend to be particularly loyal to a single caregiver. Thanks to his special touch, other black rhino calves like Swazi have been able to be re-wilded and released.

“Lucas has a magical way with these little calves, and we are so grateful that he is here to help this new little one on her journey.”

With Lucas on the case, hopes are very high for the new rhino orphan will settle down in no time and have the most gentle path to a hopeful future.

For 10 years, Book Dash has been on an epic mission to make sure more South African children fall in love with reading by creating and sharing free storybooks with kids!

South Africa (20 August 2024) — The stories and moments of joy we experienced as young readers have a way of staying with us no matter how many books we plough through in our lives.

The first storybooks we got to hold in our hands when they were so small, and the pages seemed so big will always be synonymous with the first times we held a new kind of magic. One where new adventures were created in our minds, new worlds entered ours, and new make-believe characters became as important as the real-life ones.

As many lifelong readers will understand, the thought of not having had the opportunity to experience those first stories is unimaginable. But for many South Africans, it’s also a striking reality.

Fortunately, there are many organisations working overtime to make sure that as many little South Africans as possible get the opportunity to fall in love with reading. And one of them is celebrating ten years of doing exactly that!

Book Dash is a non-profit that believes every child should own 100 books by the age of 5—a dream that began in 2014 when friends in the publishing industry gathered to put their skills together to create new African storybooks that would be distributed to children who otherwise wouldn’t have had much access to the world of stories. Soon, co-founders Arthur Attwell, Michelle Matthews and Tarryn-Anne Anderson registered the dream as an NPO and an exciting future of stories and joy lay ahead!

Over the years, Book Dash grew and grew, conquering many milestones like handing out 1 million books to children in 2020, creating over 128 original storybooks across eleven languages and enjoying their biggest print run earlier this year.

Needless to say, the 10 years have proved to be a real page-turner for all the best reasons.

How Book Dash Brings Stories and Joy to South African Children

Book Dash works through a unique publishing model. At different 12-hour events dubbed Book Dashes, volunteer creatives join forces to create unique storybooks to nourish young minds across a spectrum of age-appropriate topics.

Thereafter, the books can be enjoyed freely (you can find the library here), and hard copies are also distributed to children in different communities across South Africa. The most recent event took place on Saturday in Johannesburg.

To keep Book Dash alive and thriving, people can also purchase their storybooks to support the project’s future endeavours and hopefully, be a part of making the next 10 years as impactful as the first.
