Esther Mahlangu’s new mural is dedicated to the spirit of uBuntu! Planted at a London garden gallery, its larger-than-life stature stands tall amid the greenery, giving Londoners something bright, beautiful, and proudly South African!

London, England (20 October 2024) — After her work enjoyed its fair share of the limelight and celebrity appreciation in the USA, Esther Mahlangu’s new mural is taking up space in London!

At nearly 90-years-young, the acclaimed Ndebele artist continues to share her bold and bright geometric masterpieces with the world. Her new mural, titled ‘Umuntu ngumuntu ngabantu’ is an ode to the South African philosophy of uBuntu. In fact, its translation from Ndebele to English reads ‘I am because you are’.

The new mural has been ‘planted’ at Serpentine Gallery’s North Garden based on West Carriage Drive, where it boasts the artist’s immediately recognisable patterning and confident style. Painted across 16 wooden panels, the energy of the new mural is larger than life, much like the uBuntu ethos.

Simultaneously, Esther Mahlangu is also the talk of London’s art scene in a different part of the city. At a solo exhibition at the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, Esher’s work brought an immediate rush of vibrance and life to the walls of Melrose Gallery in the West Wing!

It’s another big moment for Tyla: South Africa’s showstopper has been chosen to headline the return of Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, where she’ll be sharing the stage with the mother of all icons, Cher!

Global (19 September 2024) — As Victoria’s Secret prepares for the long-anticipated return of its fashion show following a hiatus and rebranding era, the organisers’ sights were naturally set on making sure that the comeback show was launched with iconic women in tow.

It comes as little surprise then, that South African superstar Tyla was chosen as a headliner—an massive deal for the performer who continues to make the whole continent proud.

The Victoria’s Secret fashion show has hosted numerous stars in its time, from Lady Gaga to Rihanna. As the show prepares to return with new zest and an updated appeal to fashion inclusivity, the picks for this year’s headliners needed to ooze icon energy. True to this, mother of all icons, Cher, will also be taking to the stage, while the final headliner is yet to be revealed.

“I’m thrilled to be performing on this nostalgic and legendary stage. What’s even more exciting is the celebration of diversity, showcasing a broader range of beauty, which makes this moment truly special,” shared Tyla.

The announcement comes after another massive moment for South Africa’s showstopper. Last week, Tyla became the first South African to win a VMA (Video Music Award)! Nominated for three VMAs, Tyla took home the moon person for the Best Afrobeats category.

Meanwhile, in other big news from South African creatives taking their scenes by storm, Esther Mahlangu has been celebrated by the likes of John Legend and Alicia Keys, while a local production earned critical acclaim at the Toronto Film Festival, and Thokoza-based photographer Vuyo Mabheka has been awarded the glittering opportunity to showcase at Switzerland’s top exhibition!

Dr Esther Mahlangu’s art has been the talk of Atlanta in the USA recently, with Alicia Keys curating a special collection featuring Dr Mahlangu’s work and John Legend stopping by at another exhibition in support of our local legend!

Atlanta, United States of America (16 September 2024) — Widely celebrated South African artist and local ‘Art Gogo’ Dr Esther Mahlangu’s art is having a well-deserved moment in the spotlight yet again thanks to an exhibition that has attracted the likes of John Legend and another that’s been curated by none-other-than Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz.

Following a whirlwind of excitement that saw Dr Mahlangu’s historic art car come home for the first time in decades before taking off on a world tour and a solo exhibition in New York, other works from the Ndebele star have been attracting acclaimed attention in Atlanta.

‘Heritage Hues’, an exhibition by Dr. Mahlangu that was co-curated by Hassan Smith at ZuCot Gallery presents a selection of her works in fully-fledged vibrancy and Ndebele flair. For Africans in the diaspora, it’s more than an art exhibition from a giant in the field; but also a means of connecting others to their roots through the medium.

The exhibition was recently enjoyed by Mr John Legend himself, who popped into Dr Mahlangu’s world in Atlanta for the opening in visible awe.

But Mr Legend wasn’t the only celebrity celebrating Esther.

In another curation by Alicia Keys and Swizz Beatz, Dr Mahlangu’s work takes centre stage once again as part of ‘Giants’ at The High Museum of Art, also in Atlanta, following its run in Brooklyn.

The art on display comes from the collection of the music legends themselves, with Dr Mahlangu’s work featuring amongst 115 objects and 98 major artworks, including the likes of Nick Cave and Lorna Simpson.

For South Africans and fans of Dr Mahlangu, it’s incredibly inspiring to see how far our artists journey has taken her, and even more enriching to see how much power art so deeply rooted in a slice of South Africa’s culture has proven to be.

A powerful performance of the South African national anthem by Keabetswe (KB) Motsilanyane, joined by the entire stadium, left no dry eyes showcasing the unifying spirit of the nation.

Pretoria, South Africa (07 July 2024) – Sport has an incredible power to unite South Africa, and this was beautifully demonstrated during last night’s historic rugby match between South Africa and Ireland.

The atmosphere in the stadium reached an unforgettable crescendo as the national anthem was performed, leaving not a dry eye in sight.

The South African national anthem holds a special place in the hearts of many. For over 30 years, it has been a symbol of resilience and unity, carrying the nation through various challenges. Known worldwide for its diversity, beauty and stirring melody, the anthem is a source of immense pride.

Actress and singer Keabetswe (KB) Motsilanyane had the honour of opening the match by singing the national anthem. However, the atmosphere in the stadium was already charged with national pride, not only because the Springboks were about to play but also because Loftus had arranged a special moment to celebrate our other South African champions. The stadium was graced by award-winning Sheep Shearers, the South African Beekeeping team, champion artist Dr Esther Mahlangu, a representative from Bafana Bafana, and Dricus du Plessis, our first South African middleweight champion. As they took to the field, a massive banner unfurled, proclaiming, “Hulle Weet Nie Wat Ons Weet Nie” (“They Don’t Know What We Know”).

The announcer then declared, “The anthem today will be sung by YOU and KB Motsilanyane, and signed today by Lisa Nkandla.”

What followed was the stuff of legends. KB’s performance was moving, her passion and pride resonating through every note. But it was in the last stanza that the moment became truly magical. KB opened her arms, sharing her microphone with the stadium and the world, inviting everyone to join in. The crowd responded wholeheartedly, singing with all their might:

“Sounds the call to come together,
And united we shall stand,
Let us live and strive for freedom,
In South Africa our land.”

This powerful, unified rendition left everyone in tears and may very well set a new standard for how the national anthem is sung at future sporting events. You can watch the emotional performance below.

The Springboks then capped off the evening with a pulsating and drama-filled Test match, winning 27-20 against Ireland and going one-nil up in the Castle Lager Incoming Series. All 50,066 spectators in attendance will talk about this incredible game for years to come.

In moments like these, the spirit of South Africa shines brightly. The unity, pride, and love for our country was palpable, reminding us all of the incredible strength we possess when we come together, as I said in a tweet as the match ended last night,

Did you hear what they were telling us while they were playing? Did you see what they were saying with no words but all their actions?

“Hulle weet nie wat ons weet nie.”

When we are STRONGER TOGETHER, we win.

Tell everyone.

The skate park at Richards Bay’s Alkantstrand Beach has gotten a vibrant dose of art thanks to Sydney Mabaso; making the spot more welcoming and a place locals are proud of!

Richards Bay, South Africa (06 June 2024) — There’s nothing like a fresh coat of paint, a splash of creativity and some epic art to inspire an area. For Alkantstrand Beach in Richards Bay, a tall order of all of the above has breathed new life into the beloved Skate Park thanks to a local artist and what we’re sure have been many cans of paint.

Artist Sydney Mabaso is behind the Skate Park’s makeover. For locals, the design has made the park feel welcoming and has been praised as something that needs to be safeguarded from any unsolicited graffiti. Indeed, true to its purpose, the public artwork has added a sense of value worth protecting, as well as an important dose of pride in the Alkantstrand Beach area.

Some parts of the art depict a skater in action against a sunset skyline silhouette, while other encompass spots of natural inspiration in bold translation. Together, they tell the story of the beach’s natural vibrance, as well as its manmade ones.

Meanwhile in other wholesome creative news in other parts of our country and beyond it, Johannesburg is putting on a thrilling exhibition set to spotlight South African superheroes, The Free State Art Collective are spotlighting their creatives as part of their 40 Artists for 40 Days showcase, The National Arts Festival  Makhanda is preparing for its 50th birthday and Dr Esther Mahlangu’s latest solo exhibition in New York has been a happy success!

The Melrose Gallery is celebrating the success of Dr Esther Mahlangu and her latest solo exhibition in New York.

New York, United States (05 June 2024) — Dr Esther Mahlangu was invited to participate in the 10th Anniversary of the 1-54 New York Art Fair, which took place from May 1st to the 4th in Chelsea, New York. Her works were also placed on display for her very own solo exhibition at the international gallery. The solo exhibition has been a marvellous success so far, and Dr Mahlangu’s works were viewed by many people.

The Melrose Gallery shared the happy news of the success in their monthly newsletter, highlighting that the exhibition will run until August before heading back home to South Africa.

“Dr Esther Mahlangu’s solo at 1-54 New York was very well received. New York is the epicenter of the arts in May and there was such a wonderful, positive energy in the city. The Iziko South African National Gallery has reported that ‘Then I Knew I Was Good at Painting: Esther Mahlangu, A Retrospective’ has been attracting large audiences. The exhibition ends in August 2024 before it travels to Wits Art Museum.

We are getting ready for the launch of Dr Mahlangu’s book of interviews by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Dr Thomas Girst and Azu Nwagbogu and various other activations in London in October.” – The Melrose Gallery.

Adding to her international successes, the famous BMW art was recreated on a newer model and that exhibition has also been a hit in the United States of America.

“Esther Mahlangu’s second BMW art car world premier was the hottest ticket at Frieze, Los Angeles” – Delaina Dixon, Ebony Entertainment

The exhibition was hosted during Women’s History Month (a US-based observation) in Frieze Los Angeles. The new art car is called BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA, named after her first son.

A passion for music and numbers, Moses Phiri (AKA DJ 10111) recently graduated with his PhD in statistics, reminding people that we are not bound to a single dream!

North-West, South Africa (30 May 2024)—The arts and sciences are often pinned against one another (largely thanks to left-brain, right-brain debates that try to box people into being one way or another). While oftentimes this couldn’t be further from the truth (geometry is often integral to the world art and design, numbers and music walk hand-in-hand and there are few classes of technology that exist without creativity), it still seems to surprise society when one person decides to harness both left and right-brained passions. Worse, society still seems to think that you have to pick one flavour of passion.

Dr Moses Phiri is a perfect example that actually, you can do both. Better yet, you should try to!

Known to many as DJ 10111, Moses recently graduated with his PhD in statistics as awarded by the North-West University.

Moses graduated cum laude in 2010 with his bachelor’s degree after a university experience where both crunching numbers and cooking up beats were prevalent in his life. He was the resident DJ on campus and even co-founded the NWU DJ Society with other DJs, all while hitting the books to become a sorcerer of statistics.

As DJ 10111, he got to share stages with the likes of Grammy winners Black Coffee and Zakes Bantwini as well as many other prominent figures in South Africa’s music scene. On the other side of his pursuits, he got his honours degree, joined Statistics South Africa and travelled across the pond to work as a data science manager and eventually, as a data science director.

A lover of learning, Moses has continued to add to his educational achievements over the years; earning his MBD in strategic leadership in 2020 and of course, his recent PD.

Though embracing both passions hasn’t always been easy, it has also been worth it.

“Balancing my passion for music and academic pursuits has been challenging but rewarding. I’m grateful for the support from the NWU and the opportunities that have come my way,” he shares.

Meanwhile, in another shining example of art and maths making magic happen, Last month Dr Esther Mahlangu was awarded another honorary doctorate, this time for her gorgeous integration of math principles that have shaped her iconic art style!

Dr Esther Mahlangu has been awarded an honorary doctorate once again, this time for her gorgeous integration of math principles that have shaped her iconic art style:

Pretoria, South Africa (18 April 2024)—The renowned artist Dr Esther Mahlangu has been awarded another honorary doctorate, an achievement that further solidifies her status as a South African and global icon of mind talent. Awarded by the University of South Africa (Unisa) earlier this week, Dr Mahlangu was recognised as a Doctor of Philosophy for the ‘art of math’ in her work—a special honour for her unique integration of mathematical principles that have shaped her work!

As the university puts it:

“Mahlangu’s vibrant geometric patterns and intricate designs are not just visually stunning; they embody a profound understanding of symmetry, repetition and spatial relationships. The university acknowledged her work as a unique blend of artistic expression and mathematical brilliance. The recognition not only celebrates Mahlangu’s artistic legacy but also challenges traditional perspectives on the intersection of art and mathematics.”

Awarded by Professor Simi Dube, the Executive Dean of the College of Science, Engineering and Technology, Esther’s work was spotlighted as a ‘cultural blueprint’ for the African art renaissance of the late twentieth century.

“Her intricately stylised designs and her ideogrammatic flatness continue to inspire young generations of artists and designers. For this reason, her artworks are integral to school and university curricula in South Africa and abroad.”—Prof Simi Dube.

Dr Mahlangu’s honorary doctorate from the University of Johannesburg awarded in 2018, commended her legacy as a cultural entrepreneur who has skilfully negotiated local and global worlds and played a major role as an educator.

Hence, her story—from a young, creative girl who got told off for painting the house to becoming the first female and non-Western person ever to create one of the most famous art piece around (the art car that put Ndebele art on the map)—is one that has cracked conventions, and made many creatives believe that maybe they can too.

Those looking to dive deeper into her journey will be happy to know that a rich retrospective showcasing Esther’s artistic journey is currently on display.

You can visit ‘Then I Knew I Was Good at Painting’,at the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town until 11 August!

A primary school in Pietermaritzburg has just gotten a slice of its own massive storybook to connect with learners with a stunning audio-visual mural:

Pietermaritzburg, South Africa (26 January 2024) — Mural makeovers are exciting enough as it is. But add an audio-visual element, and you create an entirely new perspective on the thrills!

Athlone Primary School Pietermaritzburg recently got its very own audio-visual mural dubbed ‘The Nature of Things’.

Designed by Jono Hornby who painted ‘The Nature of Things’ alongside Lelo Mncwango, ‘The Nature of Things’ tells a vivid story.

According to the mural’s organisers, Jackal & Hide, the school’s staff, from Grade R teachers to the principal, helped shape the mural greatly by giving insight into life as a child and what children navigate.

Soon, various themes that speak to children (conflict resolution, friendship, growing together and the joy of being different among others) were weaved into a wonderful story of Benjamin Bunny that accompanies the mural.

Now, you’re probably wondering where the audio comes in. Well, thanks to a special QR code, anyone with a phone can scan the code and access the story as told by Bianca Jane Pieters and written by Jacqui Hiltermann while enjoying the visuals as if they were massive pages from a storybook!

Additionally, an adorable postbox is being installed so that children can write letters to ‘Mother Nature, which Ms Sebastian, the school’s guidance counsellor, will look after.

Meanwhile, in other art news that’s left us feeling all the excitement, Dr Esther Mahlangu’s iconic art car has finally returned home and will be on display as part of her lifetime exhibition ‘Then I Knew I Was Good At Painting’.

Dr Esther Mahlangu’s iconic art car has finally returned back to South Africa after inspiring people around the world for over 30 years. Ever wondered how they get cars into museums? Take a look:

Cape Town, South Africa (26 January 2024) — In anticipation of legendary Ndebele artist Dr Esther Mahlangu’s lifetime exhibition, “Then I knew I was Good at Painting”, her iconic art car has finally returned home to South Africa for the first time in over 30 years.

One of the most famous canvases in history, the car (a BMW 525i) was the beginning of Dr Mahlangu expanding her creative reach to the world and was painted in 1991. Aptly, it drove her talent from big city to big city on global tours from Washington DC to Hong Kong; further securing Ndebele art and Dr Mahlangu’s place on the map.

Its creation also meant that Dr Mahlangu became the first ever non-Western and first female artist to earn the BMW commission. Others who added their touch to the art cars were Frank Stella, David Hockney and Andy Warhol.

The talented Ndebele artist and fans are set to see her creation back on home tar as part of her upcoming exhibition. But, her colourful cruiser was already installed at the Iziko Museum in Cape Town yesterday, 25 January.

You can explore the world created by one of South Africa’s most acclaimed artists at the Iziko Museum in Cape Town, where her art car will be among the 100 artworks present.
