The 2025 Australian Firefighters Calendar is here, and it’s more than just sizzling photos – it’s a powerful force for change, pairing Australia’s bravest heroes with adorable animals to raise millions for life-saving causes across the globe.

Australia (21 October 2023) – The Australian Firefighters Calendar is back for 2025, and it’s bringing the heat once again! This year’s edition promises to be bigger, better, and cuter than ever, with a unique theme that pairs the country’s bravest heroes with some of the most adorable animals you’ve ever seen. From playful puppies to cuddly koalas, these firefighters are showing their softer side while supporting fantastic causes. It’s not just a calendar – it’s a celebration of courage, compassion, and community spirit.

For years, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has captured hearts across the world, and many of our Good Things Guy readers eagerly wait for the announcement of its release. Though we don’t get the calendars physically in South Africa, our annual article is the next best thing!

Since its launch in 1993, the Australian Firefighters Calendar has raised over $3.5 million for charities across Australia and beyond. And 2025 is no different – the calendar will continue supporting vital causes, from wildlife rescues to children fighting cancer. This year, the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital is one of the proud recipients of the calendar’s charity donations, helping rescue and rehabilitate injured wildlife.

As Dr Bree Talbot, Head Wildlife Veterinary Surgeon at the Byron Bay Wildlife Hospital, beautifully puts it: “This generous support allows us to continue saving Australian wildlife and making a lasting difference.”

But it’s not just about the pictures – these firefighters have become global conservation ambassadors, using their fame to raise awareness for causes like the protection of Australian wildlife. The 2025 calendar editions feature over 25 firefighters from aviation, military, and urban fire services. Each month reveals heart-warming photos of these heroes with animals like koalas, kittens, and even horses.

There are five different editions this year, so there’s a calendar for every animal lover out there!

With the 2025 Australian Firefighters Calendar, we get a feel-good mix of bravery, kindness, and a whole lot of cuteness. What more could you ask for? Grab a cup of tea, enjoy the pictures, and let’s celebrate these everyday heroes who are making the world a better place, one adorable moment at a time!

When hope, courage, and the spirit of a nation come together, magic happens—like this moment, when 10-year-old Isabella, battling cancer, will get the opportunity to step onto the field with the Springboks to live her dream.

Nelspruit, Mbombela (28 September 2024) – It’s stories like these that remind us of the power of hope, dreams, and the magic of sports. The Springboks, our nation’s rugby giants, have once again teamed up with Reach For a Dream to create a moment so powerful, it’s left South Africans beaming with pride and joy.

Reach For a Dream is an organisation that has been changing lives for over 30 years by granting the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses. They step in during some of the hardest moments in a child’s life, offering not just an escape, but hope, joy, and unforgettable experiences.

This week, they’ve made a special dream come true for a brave young South African.

Isabella, a 10-year-old from East London who is living with cancer, had one wish: to meet the Springboks, her heroes. And what better way to make that happen than with the nation’s beloved Bokke?

In a heartwarming social media post, the Springboks shared the news of Isabella’s dream coming true.

“Today is a very special day for 10-year-old Isabella from East London. Her dream of meeting the Springboks is about to come true. Living with cancer, rugby has always been her source of strength. Today, through a collaboration between the Springboks and Reach For a Dream, she’ll step onto the field in Nelspruit, holding Siya Kolisi’s hand to sing the national anthem before the game against Argentina.”

This moment wasn’t just about meeting her heroes; it represented something much bigger. The Springboks’ post continued to share that Isabella’s incredible courage is a shining reminder to all of us. Even during life’s toughest battles, hope is what keeps dreams alive. To make the day even more special, Isabella’s entire family has been invited to witness her once-in-a-lifetime moment from the stands. We can already feel the goosebumps rising in anticipation of that moment when she walks hand-in-hand with Siya Kolisi, standing proudly in front of a packed stadium.

Watch the clip below:

This isn’t just a story about rugby. It’s about how sport can bring us together, how it can lift up the spirits of those in need, and how the heart of a child can inspire a nation. Today, the Springboks have once again shown why they hold such a special place in our hearts. It’s moments like these that truly reflect the spirit of South Africa.

So, as we cheer for the Bokke this afternoon, we’ll be cheering even louder for Isabella, whose strength and determination remind us all of the power of hope and dreams.

South Africa, today is a day to celebrate the good!

A hilarious new video campaign by Retroviral and Panther Punch features local “athletes” in Parys, South Africa, humorously mimicking the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Parys, South Africa (26 July 2024) – In a delightful twist ahead of the Olympic Games in Paris, South African creative agencies Retroviral and Panther Punch have dropped a side-splitting new video showcasing “athletes” competing in Parys.

This campaign, aptly named “Parys 2024,” is a hilarious homage to the upcoming international sporting event, with a distinctly local flavour that’s sure to resonate with South African audiences.

Good Things Guy has often highlighted the innovative and humorous projects from Retroviral and Panther Punch, and their latest effort is no exception. Known for their viral campaigns, these creative powerhouses have once again struck gold with a video that’s already capturing hearts and laughs across the nation.

For those unfamiliar, Parys is a charming town nestled in the Free State of South Africa. Its name, which sounds like the famous French capital, Paris, sets the perfect stage for a comedic juxtaposition. The video cleverly plays on this similarity, featuring local fan favourites in a series of laugh-out-loud scenarios – from intense swingball matches to the unique sport of ‘braai-nastics.’

Glen Biderman-Pam, co-creator of the campaign, explains, “The average person underestimates the elite nature of an athlete.” He adds, “The quadrennial event provides a glimpse into the exceptionalism of the individuals representing our country, and DStv Stream provides us the opportunity to live vicariously through these athletes who sacrifice everything to don the Green and Gold.”

The humour in the content piece brilliantly highlights the obsessive nature of South African sports fans, contrasting the intense performances of athletes with the fervent fandom of viewers.

Biderman-Pam encourages everyone to rally behind Team SA, saying, “Let’s back Team SA for the next two months and stream good vibes all the way from Parys (and our mini Eiffel Tower) to Paris.”

Watch the video below:

If you cannot see the video, find the link here.

The excitement for the Olympic Games Paris 2024 is palpable, with the Opening Ceremony scheduled to commence at 19:30 on Friday, 26 July. This year’s ceremony promises to be a spectacular event, transforming the French capital into a grand stadium and theatre as athletes parade along the Seine, passing iconic Parisian landmarks.

At Good Things Guy, we’re not just about celebrating the humorous takes on international events. Even though this video was created for DStv, we’re thrilled to announce that you can catch all the Olympic and Paralympic action for free (in article format) right here on our platform. Our very own correspondent in Paris will be documenting all the South African stories, bringing you closer to the action and the triumphs of our athletes.

So, let’s cheer on our athletes, enjoy the laughs, and celebrate the incredible journey from Parys to Paris together!

Putting a hilarious spin on a word we all know and hate to love, a US artist made a song titled after South African for ‘go away’ (voetsek), an ironic honour to her falling in love with SA on a recent trip.

Global (28 May, 2023) — It’s not every day we get to hear a proudly South African slang word reserved for Eskom and out-of-order robots on Spotify, but every day in South Africa is an adventure.

Recently, an artist from the United States was inspired to make a song that ironically honours her love affair with South Africa.

In fact, Nilla Allin got so integrated into South African culture, she even got a South African name, picked by South Africans.

Allin, who has over a million followers on TikTok, documented her entire journey to Cape Town. Sharing everything from learning what loadshedding was to celebrating Freedom Day, created an unexpected bond between the singer and South Africans, and so upon her return, she decided to do something to give Mzansi a laugh.

One social media user asked her to put ‘voetsek’ in a song, and soon the track of the same title was born, and the world got to discover proudly South African slang.

And, if you ever needed proof that South Africans will stand firmly behind those who make us smile, Nilla’s song has already climbed the charts locally on Spotify.

While the lyrics aren’t exactly for South Africans of all ages (if you’ve never heard swearing before, it’s probably not for you), it also includes references to plenty of proudly South African cues including “I’m the light during loadshedding”.

When the world feels like it’s on our case, when we encounter a pothole or the price of fuel goes up, we know which song will help us get our anger out hilariously.

Meanwhile, Allin has also been focused on educating her fellow Americans about loadshedding.

@official.nilla Replying to @chevychase1209 yall.. we had NO IDEA about loadshedding😭😩! But we learning!🤣😂😂 #loadshedding #southafrica ♬ Bill It To The Room – Nilla Allin

Hyenas are known for their laughing sounds, but it was the safari guests who had the biggest laugh at a Hyena sighting recently; this sighting may not be safe for work, but it will leave you in stitches!

Botswana (11 January 2023) – Latest Sightings has shared a hilarious video filmed in the Chobe National Park that is busy going viral! The video features a randy hyena trying his best to impress his lady and failing miserably. The poor chap had ten guests crying with laughter by the end…

36-year-old tour director Calden Smith for Tauck Travel had ten guests with him when the event took place. He had taken them down to one of the popular watering holes where they saw the two hyenas in courtship. Calden shared the story with Latest Sightings, who shared it with us for your entertainment. This is what happened next…

“My guests had been very fortunate with numerous predator encounters. We decided to take a quiet waterhole road to see if we could spot anything out of the ordinary. Upon arriving at the waterhole, there was a herd of elephants and two hyenas.”

“I had initially thought that the hyenas were trying to retrieve something from the waterhole, but after about an hour and a half of watching the two run around in and out of the water it became very apparent that the smaller male was keen for something else.”

Hyenas live in matriarchal clans. This means that a dominant female will run the clan and hold the highest rank. Female hyenas don’t only have the upper hand over males in the hierarchy but also in size. They are considerably larger than males. This is one way to tell male and female hyenas apart.

“At this point, the female hyena eventually stopped her antics and submitted to the male. And so began the laughter. He attempted to mount the female and struggled to do so. The female is significantly larger than the male, making the act challenging to get right for him. At last, success. He was on her back with his back legs just touching the ground.”

A sight like this is incredibly rare, as hyenas will often seek out quiet areas to perform the mating act. They are very vulnerable in this position. Being able to witness this out in the open is truly special.

Hyenas have a gestation period of roughly 110 days, after which a female hyena will give birth to a litter of generally two and sometimes three cubs.

“The male began mating very eagerly, and we thought he looked extremely awkward and quite hilarious because of the absurd angle he was at. As if it couldn’t get any funnier, when the male reached his climax, the ecstasy became too much and the angle became too tight. He fell over!”

“The silent, tranquil bush was pierced with the laughter of 10 of my guests . This was just hilarious, to say the least. For us, it was a happy ending. For the male, I’m not sure if you can call it a successful ending, but he continued to try his luck for quite some time.”

“If you find this new bug in your house, do not kill it!!! His bite is not poisonous; they are very affectionate, it feeds on mice and small rodents, and it goes away on its own.”

Johannesburg, South Africa (07 September 2022) – South Africans responding to a Facebook post about a “new bug” that is finding its way into our homes is pretty ridiculous and quite funny!

A South African Facebook page called “Nuus/Wenke/Hekel/Brei & Respte” shared a post about a species of “Arthropod” that is apparently making its way into South African homes.

“If you find this species of arthropod in your house, do not kill it!!! His bite is not poisonous; they are very affectionate, it feeds on mice and small rodents, and it goes away on its own. They are tropical animals, which live in trees, probably arrived in Africa on ships carrying logs and have also adapted very well here to the hot climate. I recommend if you find one at home, treat it well.”

The photos are, in fact, of a toy/prop called a “Facehugger” from the Alien film franchise. They are not friendly and, in the film series, serve as the second stage of the Alien’s life cycle, acting as intermediaries for the Alien with the sole purpose of implanting other living beings with Alien embryos.

Sounds fun… or maybe not so much, but the comments to the post have been super funny as many have believed the photos to be real, thinking it is a new species of arachnid.

“Uhm, when you say affectionate, what exactly does it mean.” – Maryna Coetzee Parsons Wells

“Oh, HELL NO! If it comes into my house, it will be treated like a burglar; it will die, end of story!!!” – Merdith Rose

“Are you serious? I won’t try to kill, in case it’s faster than me, but I’ll definitely move out, and send scouts in to check if it’s left.” – Magda Van der Westhuysen

“Don’t tell us what to do! We killing it and moving out and selling the house with the spider included.” – Shaafi Kamaldien

“If that moves in he can have the house the car the boat the caravan the works I’m out!!” – Kath DuPlooy McDonald

The comments are hilarious, but they highlight the importance of a narrative we feel passionately about here at Good Things Guy. Yes, Facehuggers should absolutely be avoided, but the majority of arachnids shouldn’t.

Arachnids like spiders are beneficial predators and serve a significant role in keeping populations of many insect pests in check. It is estimated that one spider can eat as many as 2,000 insects in a year – the majority of these being flies and mosquitos! They might seem creepy (because we have told each other this for generations), but Spiders aren’t actually out to get to us and actively avoid human interaction. They might be predators of insects, but their biggest predator is us. We are their killers.

So maybe next time you encounter a spider in your home, don’t threaten to burn the house down. Rather get something (or someone) to move the spider outside and keep your space free of mosquitos and flies!

And again, if you do encounter a real Facehugger… good luck and Godspeed!

Elton John and Britney Spears have just dropped their new single ‘Hold Me Closer’ – a reimaging of ‘Tiny Dancer’.

Global (26 August 2022) – Elton John and Britney Spears have released ‘Hold Me Closer,’ a reimagined duet of the piano man’s original ‘Tiny Dancer’.

It’s been six years since Britney released new music and nine months since she was freed from the conservatorship that ruled her life for 13 years but ‘Hold Me Closer’ has just been released, and it’s the comeback we have all been waiting for.

Sir Elton and Britney have both been teasing their collaboration on social media, but the new song has finally been released today. ‘Hold Me Closer’ is a follow-on of duets similar to ‘Cold Heart’, which Sir Elton released in 2021 with Dua Lipa.

This time it’s all about Britney B*tch… and we are here for it all. Welcome back Brit.

Introducing Float-A-Poo – an ingenious waste disposal system that lets you send your dog’s poop up in the air like a balloon. Then you can watch it float away and let it be someone else’s problem.

Global (22 August 2022) – There is a new “dog waste disposal system” that lets you inflate your bag of poop with helium and “free yourself of your dog’s waste”. This is Float-A-Poo!

Because carrying a bag of poop is embarrassing – especially when it’s not your own!

“There are many ways to dispose of dog poop – burying, flushing, and the traditional bagging method before pitching it into a compost pile at home. But no matter the method, getting rid of your dog’s faeces is still an unnecessary chore.” – Awesome Inventions

Good thing there’s the Float-A-Poo! This ingenious waste disposal system lets you send your dog’s poop up in the air like a balloon. Then you can watch it float away and let it be someone else’s problem.

Yes, ‘Float-A-Poo’ is something you can really buy… but it’s actually just an empty box!

You’ve been pranked! Or better yet, we have just introduced you to the best pranking gift boxes we have ever seen!

Prank-O has created hilarious prank boxes that you can hide your actual gifts in.

“They’re the boxes for screamingly funny, hilariously awful, but scarily plausible products that don’t really exist. The photography, typography and layout of these boxes are perfect. I mean, they look exactly like the cheesiest products you’d buy from TV infomercials.” – Prank-O

The concept is simple and so funny! You put people’s real presents inside the empty Prank Pack boxes, and then, when they unwrap their gifts, you get that delicious moment of watching their faces as they struggle to be tactful. They think you’ve just given them the all-time turkey of presents.

Once they figure out that it’s just a satirical prank, there’s even more laughter — and then gratitude for the much more thoughtful present you’ve stashed inside.

Check out some of the ridiculously funny designs below:

“Many Xhosa men have had an issue with me pole dancing, so I thought I would pole dance in heels and give them more to have an issue about! Don’t forget, I can still kick your ass while wearing these heels.” – Siv Ngesi

Johannesburg, South Africa (12 July 2022) – Noted as one of SA’s most dynamic personalities, who’s never afraid to speak his mind, actor Sivuyile “Siv” Ngesi is going viral after pole dancing in heels.

From Safta nominated adventurous presenter on the magazine programme “Man Cave”, to witty co-presenter of the global travel show Winging It, to charming cooking show host on “Jou Ma se Chef”, and as host of corporate events and conferences from “Durban to Dubai”, and online social commentator, Siv brings his unique brand to everything he does.

And now he’s bringing it to the world of male pole dancing.

Pole dancing combines dance and acrobatics centred on a vertical pole. This performance art form takes place not only in gentleman’s clubs as erotic dance but also as a mainstream form of fitness, practised in gyms and dedicated dance studios… and it’s for both men and women!

Pole dancing has gained popularity as a form of exercise with increased awareness of general strength and fitness benefits. These forms of exercise increase core and general body strength by using the body itself as resistance while toning the body as a whole, and Ngesi is showing South Africa what kind of strength it takes to “work that pole”!

The South African wants men to know that there is nothing wrong with pole dancing.

“Many Xhosa men have had an issue with me pole dancing, so I thought I would pole dance in heels and give them more to have an issue about! Don’t forget, I can still kick your ass while wearing these heels.”

The name – MSC Poesia – is not lost on South Africans. Just like when NASA started a program called POES, and we just couldn’t deal, it’s happening again.

Johannesburg, South Africa (27 April 2022) – South Africans love a good laugh, and so it is to be expected that when a cruise ship called the MSC Poesia announces that it will be coming to our shores, we’re all having a good chuckle online.

The 3000-passenger MSC Poesia has been around for 14 years and mainly sails in Northern Europe during the summer season, but MSC cruises have just announced (and opened ticket sales) for its World Cruise, which includes stops in Durban, Gqeberha and Cape Town.

“The 121-day itinerary includes 52 unforgettable destinations across 31 countries for the ultimate once-in-a-lifetime escape not to be missed. From the Med, sail to the Red Sea through via Suez Canal, Africa South America, Caribbean, USA & Canada, before returning to Europe via Greenland and Iceland.”

Cool cruise MSC, but the name is not lost on South Africans. Just like when NASA started a program called POES, and we just couldn’t deal, it’s happening again.

Here are some of the social media comments from South Africans currently giving us the giggles:

“Who’s going to let MSC know? 🤣🤣” – @ct_shark

“I’ve heard rumours that the mothership is called MA Se Poesia.” – @JohnHar74820927

“I can see someone spray painting the ia out !!” – @lilyrac2222

“Finally a ship named after Cele.” – @Mike_Coxlong_1

“That ships name is sooooo. South African.” – @Raymond43384026

“A lesbian cruise! Woooo” – @MelAttree

“You forgot to mention the sister ship MSC Pielia is also coming.” – @maertinbrink1972
