The Lorentzville community in Johannesburg are giving their neighbourhood a makeover! Transforming spaces with bright paint and vibrant art, they are making a positive difference one forgotten wall at a time.

Lorentzville, South Africa (08 August, 2023) — A community painting initiative in Johannesburg is bringing vibrant energy to Lorentzville, and with their efforts, this neighbourhood might just become the next Bo-Kaap.

Dubbed ‘Lorentzville Love’, the initiative is community-led, spearheaded by an anonymous tenant at Victoria Yards who employed people to help paint the houses, as Victoria Yards’ PJ Henning tells Good Things Guy.

For the community, it was high time to give Lorentzville some love. Despite the creative and community spaces in the area, the Valley’s exterior is traditionally gloomy. And, after efforts to ask the Municipality to focus on the area more (including rubble clearing) hadn’t seen much result, active citizens decided to do what they could to contribute to a neighbourhood makeover.

People were inspired by the painting initiative and even artists like Dekor One and James Delaney got involved to add their talent to a few forgotten walls.

Paint donations are the beating heart of the initiative, so if anyone wants to lend some heart,  they can contact Victoria Yards (a community creative hub, events space and cafe) on 0105945210 or 0725207432 and ask for PJ for more details.
