Shosholoza Meyl triumphantly resumes long-distance passenger rail services, offering an affordable and convenient mode of travel between Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town.

South Africa (04 December 2023) – In a welcome piece of news for holiday-makers and travellers alike, the iconic Shosholoza Meyl train service has triumphantly returned to the tracks, rekindling the joy of rail travel between Johannesburg, Durban, and Cape Town just in time for the December holidays.

The train service, which faced a temporary derailment in 2021 due to operational and network infrastructure challenges, is now back in action, promising a renewed sense of adventure for passengers embarking on the scenic journey between these vibrant South African cities.

The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (Prasa) announced the resumption of the long-distance passenger rail services as a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to revive and enhance the country’s railway infrastructure.

“Resuming the long-distance passenger rail services is our commitment to offering an alternative mode of transportation, connecting people with their families and friends, and offering holiday-makers an affordable and convenient means to reach their destinations,” stated Prasa.

As families and friends eagerly plan their holiday trips, the revival of Shosholoza Meyl couldn’t have come at a better time. The train service not only provides an affordable travel option but also promises a unique and picturesque journey through the diverse landscapes of South Africa. To further enhance the travel experience, Prasa has introduced an additional convenience for passengers heading to Durban. Shosholoza Meyl now offers an affordable private car transportation service at an extra cost. This service is not only limited to train passengers but is open to the general public, providing a seamless option for those looking to transport their vehicles conveniently.

“This service is also open to the general public, providing a convenient option for those who wish to transport their vehicles,” emphasized Prasa in a statement.

The announcement of the resumed services comes as a relief for many cash-strapped consumers who have been grappling with the escalating costs of long-distance travel.

Johannesburg to Durban:

  • Economy (sitter) one-way ticket: R170
  • Sleeper one-way ticket: R360

Johannesburg to Cape Town:

  • Economy (sitter) one-way ticket: R430
  • Sleeper one-way ticket: R690

The return of this iconic train service is undoubtedly a cause for celebration, promising a smoother and more accessible travel experience for South Africans and visitors alike. All aboard for a memorable and budget-friendly holiday adventure!
